An important thing to remember is a technique modern artillery crews use (and cannons are older artillery). Fire for effect. Essentially you fire off a few shots to see where they land, adjust accordingly, then when you find your sweet spot, unload on your opponent to maximize your effectiveness before they can reposition or retaliate. On a moving ship it becomes trickier, but the same principles apply.
Also another tip: Trust your crew and trust yourself. Make a decision and try to be proactive to control a fight. You don't like a fight...reset it. Control the outcome!

@@thefoolthatseeks6974 Resetting the fight is when a fight has already taken place and things aren't exactly going the way you'd like. So rather then double down on what could turn out to be a sink for you and your crew you disengage from the fight, recollect your nerves, strategy and resources and reproach the fight again with a better strategy or position for the win.

Totally agree to be honest it's moreover my personal tier list and that all fights are circumstantial. It's more of guidance for the newcomers rather than anything set and stone
Amazing video! I keep getting sunk because I put barrel bombs in my crows nest and they always shoot them now I'm going to try to keep them in my row boat and use the harpoon to drag it instead

That’s even worse my guy. Kegs shouldn’t be on your boat unless your doing something very specific with them
Idk why, but ppl don't put it together. But fire and a venom ball. Can change a fight. Or a sleep ball with fire is good too. Grant it it's more situational. But can come in handy..

here another tip..when listing the cannons balls make it so they are high enough quality to actually be read.
I actually have a video that goes over all the cannonballs in detail, along with the website that provides the list in the description below for those who prefer to just read it about them 👍
kegs are actually safe on the end of the bow. on a galleon and brig they will do no damage to the ship
I had my first pvp encounter today I took out two skeleton sloops and than I got jumped by a skeleton galloon and than another guy decided to fight me I was super low on wood and cannonballs so I rammed the other players sloop in the side and jumped on his ship and he killed me but I was able to respawn fast and keep my crippled sloop from sinking I think the skeleton galloon finished the other guy off because his loot was floating on the sea and was barely able to sink the galloon I'm pretty sure the other guy put some good holes in the skeleton galloon but I was able to collect all the loot and drag my crippled butt to port and sold it all and now I'm super close to buying my sloop ship. I did have one fire bomb left so I lit my sloop on fire and sent it off viking furnal style and log off to go to work.

Haha! It's a warning for people starting out tempted to leave them in the nest. As you get more comfortable keg plays can be a "blast" xD

@@CopiousJack Using them as charges against the persuing ships are the best uses. Explosion after explosion would send the crew in a panic as they desperately try to repair the ship.

came here because i just got sunk the second day in a row, both tryna do fotd, 1 ten hour session and another 12 hour with next to nothing to show for it, it feels almost unfair as i can sink some ships with ease and then some crew just way out of my league rocks up and i dont have a chance. This game can be frustrating sometimes huh
There's no doubt about it; the game can definitely get frustrating. Sea of Thieves is easy to learn but hard to master. If you get too comfortable and let your guard down eventually someone's going to notice and take advantage. It never feels good to invest that much into something that someone else gets the benefit of, but you never lose entirely since it is always a teachable moment. Just remember to always be mindful of someone else wanting what you yourself know to be valuable; especially if you're doing one of the single most profitable events that gets announced to the entire server.

I mean seriously it is not that useless especially if enemy is out of supplies they can't do anything
I find my shots alway go over the ship no matter how much I lower and getting stuck on a high wave...
The wave is RNG and the bane of a cannoneers existence. But my advice is always associate your first shot as a "judgement" shot to gauge if you are over or under and correct accordingly. You can also have the ship captain spot for you as well

If you're on a sloop, and really know what you're doing, you can keep kegs on the ship, but it is an added risk. As far as I know, sloops are the only ship this is viable on.
At the end of the day everything is circumstantial. If you choose to that's fine, just always be in the habit of staying aware of the risk so you can avoid as much fallout as possible. Keep in mind with the small area of a sloop it becomes increasingly more likely that any keg that blows up on it will disable it. Having only 1 mast, especially if you're solo that can be devastating. So, as far as guide's go, starting out cautious and avoiding placing them on your ship until you're more experienced I find to be the best of available options
@@CopiousJack if u 2 are not aware kegs are relatively viable on galleons. if you put the kegs on the nose of your ship the kegs cause no damage to you if shot and blown up. it will only catch the nose on fire. you have 4 people to defend the ship from boarders so assuming u aren't all bad at head on combat u have good protection against most boarding situations. the Shockwave will take away ur momentum. but theoretically u could use that to ur advantage. and since it's on the nose if u see a boarder going for it. just shoot the keg boarders dead and u take no damage. also good if u like ram plays if the kegs collide with a ship they explode so gives u that explosive ram which is always fun.
Oh yea, that's been in the game and known for a long time. My point regarding kegs was added strictly due to the fact that most people looking up combat guides I imagine will be newer to the game and perhaps even pvp. So I generally don't see keg plays at entry level strategy for beginners learning combat 😋
I would like to see campers on boat forced to go back after a certain amount of kills.
I know adding revives to the game sparked debate back in the day since it encouraged the possibility for camping

This game is almost impossible to get into with all the pvp sweats that just sink you and be as toxic as possible unprovoked.
The pvp and pve community has always been in contention, unfortunately. Many pvpers in the SoT community developed some unwritten rules (as did i) when it came to engaging other ships. Generally, you can tell if someone is new, and it's always been my policy not to dissuade newcomers from learning the game; though, whether pvers like it or not the pvp is still in the game and there to stay so it's always been my advice to keep an open mind to learning at least a few tricks for survival or risk having a bad time anytime you play 😔
@CopiousJack you know fair, not all encounters with pvp pros are entirely negative ya they tske my shit but it's apart of the game. Its the people who just spawn kill untill you decide to quit, and send messages after the fact telling you how shit you are that really stand out and leave a bad taste in my mouth (which on console atleast happens often).
I cant tell you how many times I get invited to a party or a group chat Inv expecting some.sort of decency like "ya we sunk you and ruined you voyage but gg we respect your fruitless attempt at a defense"

All people do is sail straight at you and immediately board with blunderbuss. There is no ship combat anymore

@@CopiousJack of all the tips and tricks videos I've watched on naval combat, none of them really address how to avoid getting boarded. Just what to do if it happens. And it happens to me constantly.. I don't know if I'm sailing too close or what, but I'd love to hear from you on how I can avoid this from now on.
Generally the videos that teach you to fight with swords, guns, blunder bombs often operate off the assumption at some point for when you get boarded in my experience; though perhaps not explicitly
Well yes, getting boarded is a massive part of the game and it's going to happen. But how can I avoid it, how can I prevent it to the best of my ability?
@@michaelfennell4809 Unfortunately even the best of us know its bound to happen. As cliche as it sounds you'd be surprised at how many people simply don't pay attention. For example, There are distinct cannon sounds for those that shoot themselves out vs a cannonball as well as obvious angles that anyone that has it would most certainly take advantage in trying to board. Also, there are distinct sounds when someone grabs your ladder to board you as well. I wish there was a 1 magical answer but there isn't.
