If you're a new seller with low feedback, you can sell items to yourself and rackup you're feedback.
And Mark them as dispatched without sending anything. List items for £1, and pay ebay 10p in fees,
If you have the capital, you can become a top rated seller on ebay without doing anything, and have the best feedback score, with no returns.

It's great that you laid this out so consumers can see this crap and be on the alert for it. I've had all this happen to me and it is more than frustrating and very unethical. Happened here too, I was selling a metal detector years ago when someone bid more then it was worth early on. Needless to say no one else bid on it for the next few days. 5 minutes before the end of the auction their bid was retracted. So the first bidder was all of a sudden the high bidder. I had to move fast and had a friend outbid the current high bidder. No way could I let the detector go for a quarter of its value. Works both ways if you pay attention.

I know it's not very honorable, but I had an arch nemesis who could (and always did) waaaay outspend me on a niche product we both collected, so when those particular cards showed up on eBay, I used to carefully bid him up to his maximum in an attempt to get him to spend way more money than he probably wanted to. The goal was to get him to back down every so often so that I stood a chance at winning once in a while. I think it worked because his max started to decrease and I was able to win some stuff I know he needed. Plus the seller's enjoyed a nice bump in profit without even realizing what was going on. Again, I know it's not honorable but some people have way more disposable income than others, and I refused to be priced out of something I loved, so I employed the tactics I had to.

There are a ring of people who do something similar to that in foreclosure auctions. It's called bid rigging and it's a federal crime with felony charges. The bidders who dominate the purchases basically try to scare the new buyers from bidding, so they bid up the property for sale if someone else starts bidding against them. They're willing to pay more than needed to scare off people and make them never want to come back so they have more control. It's also called "cornering the market."

I learned that this good information isn't available on the eBay mobile app for Android. I use my phone for almost all my eBay buying and selling. I will definitely have to start using my laptop more often with the full eBay display. The phone app is great, I take the photos and create my listings, but it is very streamlined. It doesn't have all the features and information that are available in the full eBay platform. ✌️

There's just too many scammers on Ebay for them to care about this sort of thing. Imagine you run Ebay with tens of thousands of gold listings, car listings each day. Knowing full well at least 5% of them will be some form of scam.
Would it even make sense for them to be motivated at low priced baseball cards? Things like this is, it's gonna be up to *us* to police. IMO Ebay has a million "problems" that would be addressed first....before tackling broke, unemployed losers who bid up a rediculous, superficial David Ortiz card.

    • @carsyncruz

I think eBay ignores it cuz as long as the sale goes through, they are making money, and the value is apparently there. I think one would have to consistently have items cancel and not close before eBay took notice and did something to the seller.

This is very ignorant by Ben's Baseball Cards. If he plans on staying in the industry he is destroying his own fan base. If you go to an LCS and buy packs and never get anything you're not going to continue to shop at a place that searches their product. As an owner you will profit more by being honest.
There is a reason we have the option of "Buy it Now" or "Auction." If one expects to get no less than say $50 for a lot then post it at Buy it Now at $55 or $60 with minimum offer price but when you play games like shilling you are just screwing yourself. If you buy what's cold and sell what's hot then the market will take care of market value naturally. Shill bidding is not necessarily a criminal act but integrity is equally important.
