Savvy bidders should always "snipe" as in bid at the last second anyways. There's really no difference between shill bids and bidding too early and engaging in costly and unnecessary bidding wars.

Becky Ortiz even if you bid at last second. You can still be scammed. If the shady seller puts a bid of 400 in earlier. It may only be showing at 150 at the time you bid 500. But it will jump the auction up to 405. If it were an honest auction your bid would have ended up at 155. So in essence they are inflating the auction exorbitantly.

Wow! Thank you for sharing. I got scammed recently by a website that looked legit and everything. I paid with PayPal and for 2 day shipping. When it did not come on the day it was suppose to, I went to send a message and the website had been taken down. So now I have to wait for PayPal to do an investigation before I can get my money back
These fake websites are popping up everwhere. I'm sorry you were scammed. I'm sure you'll get your money back. It will take a little while, but since you didn't receive anything, it's easier to prove it. Some innocent victim's of these websites will get rocks, a plastic doll, a cheap blanket, a brush. Anything in the box, except a reborn. PayPal sometimes will deny the claim based on fact that item was received, and proving it wasn't the doll is harder to confirm. Good luck with PayPal. Hopefully it'll be quick for you.

As a buyer this happened to me a couple of years ago , was the last time I used " automatic " bids , meaning you put in your highest bid at the start , I wasn't going to access to the internet at the auction end . Anyway I saw in the bids someone was bidding up small amounts , maybe 8 to 10 times , eventually they outbid me then retracted or cancelled their last bid with a few minutes left. I offered the seller I'd pay my highest bid excluding all these bids made by this idiot bidder , he/ she refused and was offended that I was suggesting shill bidding was taking place even though I never mentioned " shill bidding " I just said the bidding looked suspicious, don't think I even heard of shill bidding before . I watched the re listed auction and in the end it sold for maybe about 10% less than what I offered . Wish I reported this seller. Also I understand why EBay now doesn't remove all bids with less than 12hrs left to protect the seller against dishonest buyers. Better to not allow bid retractions at all or limit them to say 1 chance then it's too bad , if you bid you buy ., no cancelled bids full stop.

I looked at his sold stuff and noticed pasts auctions were missing bidders, for example if it said 2 bidders bid on the auction, one was missing which is probably what you’re describing here. Except in this scenario the seller is inflating the price. We’re not FBI detectives yet we can identify these scams, eBay clearly knows about this but are not interested in stopping it, as long as they make $$$.

Yeap the second chance offer just happened to me.The shill bidder bid to high.I went back and looked at the bid history and the shill bidder had 0 feedback.Also they had other bids for that seller only on other items.I think I will send the seller a message tonight and tell him I will buy the camera for my lowest bid before shill bidder outbid me and another buyer.Seller sent me an offer and said the highest bidder didn't pay.
I am assuming you did not use the reserve option? I am thinking that if the reserve was set this scammer would not be able to do this. Is that correct? You did a GREAT job of explaining this. It was something I wasn't aware of, so I am very thankful.

My wife and I started a business on Amazon. We found out quickly that the only way you get anywhere is based on your reviews. So you can either be on the first few pages of search but if you don't have reviews you could be on page 20. Most people make a decision within 3 to 5 pages. Needless to say, we no longer have the business.

It's been years now. I'm sure my ebay history doesn't go back that far.The scammers involved changed their ID's multiple times in an attempt to scam me again, so I finally had to stop doing auctions all together just to get rid of them for good. I would cross reference buyers' feedback to see if any of them are related through sales ( because that's how they build their feedback to make themselves look legit).

I'm sorry to hear that. After it happened to me, I started listing all my items with Buy It Now options only. I buy the same way. No bidding for me!!

You should of blocked the shill bidders and relisted the item. And you wouldn't of had this problem.
