    As someone who loves a good villain song, _Assassins,_ being like 90% villain songs, is one of my all time favorites.

    I think Aida deserves at least a mention. It’s such a beautiful show that a lot of people overlook and don’t talk about as much in musical theatre

    I really really want there to be a production of Assassins at Ford's Theatre. 😍 People have told me I'm sick for wanting that. But, honestly, it would be perfection.

    I wouldn't really qualify THE LAST FIVE YEARS as "underrated" since really the only criteria they explained was that it hasn't had a Broadway production. The show would get swallowed up in a bigger Broadway house. It's had a revival, multiple concert stagings, and a whole movie, which is impressive for an intimate two-person show.

    I remember waking up early before school to read the reviews for Bonnie and Clyde's opening night. I had gotten ahold of some demo recordings a couple years before and was super excited. I was so upset when the show got eviscerated by the critics.

    To be fair, the most recent Broadway revival of CAROLINE, OR CHANGE was always supposed to be a limited run. It closed right on schedule.

  • @AtWordsPoetic
    @AtWordsPoetic ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Also worth noting, the 2004 revival of ASSASSINS and the 2021 revival of CAROLINE OR CHANGE were both preset limited runs under the Roundabout Theatre Company, so the narrative that they didn't catch on and closed too soon is kind of disingenuous. I do wish, in making these videos, the creators would research those small details that have a major influence on their entire narrative.

    Next to Normal won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony for Best Score and Best Actress. It was also one of the most produced musicals in the country for several years after closing in New York. That hardly seems underrated.
    Also, I saw Bombay Dreams and The Pirate Queen. They both received the praise they deserved - little.
    I DO agree with Piazza being #1. I’ve seen it 4 times and it’s an extraordinary piece.

    I saw Alice Ripley as Diana when the national tour of N2N opened in Los Angeles. She sang off pitch at times. But I still couldn’t believe the emotionally intense story I was witnessing on that stage. But if you want real underrated, try Memphis. PS Light was my Quarantine Lullaby

  • @benjaminsagan5861

    Including your honorable mentions, I saw 8 of these 14 productions (including some national tours and a pre-Broadway run -- all with the Broadway casts). I've also seen other productions of some of the same, as well as a ninth entry. And I've music directed productions of at least two of these.
    Personally, I would swap your Yazbeck entries. _The Full Monty_ is a surprisingly moving show in its final scenes, after being hilarious for two hours. A lot of this is down to Terrence McNally's criminally underrated script. Whereas, _Dirty Rotten Scoundrels_ suffers considerably from comparison to its source material. Even if Joanna Gleason was typically marvelous in her opening song.
    Since _Caroline_ and _Piazza_ are two of my all-time favorite nights in the theatre, I'm pleased with their rankings. But at the same time ... Aren't they both near-universally adored among theatre people?

    Oddly, your number one is probably the only one I would have left off this list. I mean it's very good, but I would have represented Adam Guettel with Floyd Collins, a show that always needed more attention and audiences. I know that technically it isn't in your time frame, having premiered in 1996, but I would have stretched that time frame to accommodate it, as I believe it to be one of the most important musicals of the past 50 years.

    Underrated? No. I love Assassins, I have seen several productions, but I would sell my children to see Light in the Piazza again. It's complicated and adult and the score is impossibly beautiful. Most of these shows have had plenty of productions. Still, any excuse to hear Octet....

    A more accurate title for this video would be "Musicals of Quality Which Didn't Run Forever But Still Get Lots of Productions (well, except for "Caroline, or Change"). The Honorable Mention selection that I would delete would be "The Pirate Queen" which, despite Stephanie J. Block giving her all, was a terrible show.
