I've just started to slightly scare my mother. We were watching Graham Norton, and a boxer who is going to the Olympics was talking, and I just said - "She sounds like she's from Northern England". Looked it up, and she was. I'm from California, and have never been to Britain or met many British people, so I think she's wondering how the hell I starting to differentiate where someone is based on their accent. Doctor Who man...And Christopher Eccleston.
He's trying, he needs to do a lot for this role- the accent, the diction, the posture and mannerism but the brilliance of him is that he disguise this as nonchalance
From a musicology perspective, when he sings “so annoyingly hard” the chords go, 1-2-5, treating the dominant as a tonic for a second, while the melody goes, 3-#4-5. This 1-2-5 chord progression and this 3-#4-5 melody is found a lot in Queen songs. You can see a variation of it in Killer Queen. “Just like Marie Antoinette,”
Christian Borle's English accent is absolutely on point, so many Americans trying to do it just do either a bad cockney accent or a slightly posh sounding American accent, there's a reason it's often touted as the most difficult to master for non-natives, so Borle has my utmost respect for his dedication to mastering every nuance. One thing I've yet to see is a perfect regional English accent from an American actor, such as Liverpool, Bristol or Newcastle, now that would be unbelievably impressive, especially the latter.
Christian Borle is the only American I know of that can actually do a decent Yorkshire accent. His range of acting is incredible and I adore him for it
