I used to sell TVs at Walmart, and TCL/Vizio were top sellers, which accurately reflected the budget buyers at the store. Side-by-side, looking hard enough, TCL and Hisense were inferior to Samsung and LG, but the TCL/Hisense had unbeatable prices. To start out, TCL had good enough TVs at very attractive prices. Not too cheap and not too expensive. Now, TCL has the scale and the technology to go big and bring top-tier technology at Samsung, LG, and Sony's level. A major factor to TCL's insane growth is that the Chinese government/provincial governments were known to provide cheap loans to promote industrial production. Building new factories and equipping them is a highly capital intensive. TCL effectively had unlimited loans in their ascendancy, so TCL could lose money without consequences to gain market share until they can compete at Samsung or LG's level.
What percentage of the TCL tvs carried the Roku OS? I bet it's a pretty high number. Also, Chris Larson (the TCL executive mentioned in the video) moved over to Roku a while ago.

Samsung, LG, Sony, sharp, toshiba, panasonic durability over 20.000 hours. And actually, if we compare the image quality with the same resolution, TCL loses to Korean and Japanese brands tv

I bought a TCL TV in 2018 to use as a desk monitor and it still works perfectly, all day, every day. I'm almost sad it's still fine because it'd be nice to upgrade but I can't justify replacing my 55" 4k monitor with a slightly better 55" 4k monitor
I bought a TCL series 4 4k 55" TV (Android version) and use it as a monitor. Works great. The only thing I hate is the Remote they have like no buttons/functionality. As far as the TV I actually bought 2 of them the same day as Best Buy had a sale and they were only $250... how can ya go wrong with that deal. I put the other one in my bedroom. The only other complaint is that the Wifi drops the connection more than it should. So the negatives for me are the remote and the Wifi as far as the image I think its great. It would be better if Windows had less problems with scaling issues for apps/programs
Saying something you bought in 2018 is still working perfectly to this day kind of gives me a sense of disappointment. My grandparents had an old Zenith wooden console in the basement that still worked at 30 years old. Today's electronics are crap when it comes to quality components.
I got a 50 inch 4k TCL TV for like $350 almost 8 years ago when 4k TV were at minimum $500-$1000. Only just upgraded to a bigger TV last year. TCL is definitely the value brand.
TCL may be great value but Sony is best quality. I would honestly would rather pay a little more for the quality considering tvs last for years. Plus TCL isn’t gunna stay this way forever
I agree. They offer a great product at a great price. I pretty much only recommend and buy TCL & Ffalcon (TCL's budget brand) TV's these days. I also don't connect it to the internet (I connect my PC and/or a Fire TV stick to it), so I'm not overly concerned that it is a Chinese company.
I use a 10 year old, 22" desktop monitor that I picked up on clearance. When this one dies (if I can't repair it), I'll be getting another used monitor.
Asus, Acer and Foxconn are Chinese lol. I'm not talking politic I am stating their race. Of course Taiwan says they are not China and China says Taiwan is China but they are Chinese race. Much like Jews says they are not Arabs but they are
I bought a sony bravia in 2013 for about $2500. It suddenly wouldn't turn on in 2020 and the repair center said there would be no timetable for when it would be fixed since it's an old model and they had to scavenge their warehouse for a model similar to it for parts and it was the start of the pandemic lockdowns. I bought a similarly sized $400 TCL without expectation since I was on a budget. 4 years on, it's still up and running and my sony ended up getting junked because they couldn't find any parts.
I had the same issue. Bought a Sony TV in 2019 and it died after 3 years (it had a big green box that kept getting bigger), meanwhile the TCL TV I bought in 2016 is still going strong. These days I only buy TCL & Ffalcon (TCL's budget brand) TV's.
My Sony x900e died at 7 years. Barely worth it. I say pay under 1,000.00 only pay 1,500 for OLED. Then buy the 5 year warranty for peace of mind at Best Buy.
@@KenjiEspresso yeah , a lot of people expect their TVs to last 10-20 years like the old ones used to.. and that’s why they don’t get the protection plan/extended warranty. Either that or they just say they’ll buy another when it dies.
TCL was never an unknown brand for me. I remember my older brother and my dad bring a massive black TCL CRT TV in the early 2000's. It looked massive for its time and worked with no issues. The only issue was that the remote was pretty fragile and had to be replaced every few years. In the early 2010's when my brother got married he got the CRT as a hand me down and we got a new LCD TV. Even then, the TV kept working for years. Probably 15+ years. So the TCL TV brand was a good brand to me even though I didn't know anyone else with the same brand of TV. I can only imagine that they got better with their TVs!
This video is incomplete without mentioning RokuOS that most TCL tvs used to carry. A huge part of their popularity can be attributed to them adopting the Roku OS early on. Also, Chris Larson doesn't work at TCL no more, hes at Roku today.
If it doesn't have Android TV OS, it's useless in these days, you need proper support for FHD or 4K and corporations like Disney will not allow you to watch full quality on some "weird OSL," they won't allow it neither on PC with Windows anymore. This problem with streaming wars went already too far and it has to stop.
First time bought a P series in 2019. Wich is the cheap, entry level series. In Romania, they are quite new on the market. But i gambled. And i won. Now, i bought a second one, but this time it's a top notch C845. Wow. With a bit of tuning, i'm geting close to oled black, but at half the price. Not to mention i bought to pair it with PS5. It has all the goodies : miniled qled, 4k, 144hz, ALLM, VRR, 240hz game boost, Game master, dolby atmos and vision, HDR10+, 2000 nits brightness. the 55" model has 376 local dimming zones. The top 85" version has 976. So, no backlight bleeding&shit. This is the best bang for the buck.
same i got a TCL miniled last year in winter ,55 C805 miniled for almost half the price i paid like 5-6 years ago for a middle tier, lcd tv from Panasonic , and side by side its way better that that older Panasonic tv , much better contrast ,black level , brightness , colors and 0 stutter in apps + tone of new features . that tv was a Panasonic CX 680 so not a bad one by any means . Not to meantion i manage i got 5y warranty for it si in this current tv market in my country this tv felt like a steal ^^
We had a TCL 39 inch tv, and its 7 yeArs old it is still functioning asf. Its outdated with the smart tv of today, but with the help of tv stick, we can watch netflix no problem.
The last thing mentioned - practicality - is why TCL is dominating. But, it's NOT like how the video portrays it. The real reason TCL is dominating is because nowadays, people who are buying expensive TVs (anything over $600-$1000) are buying long extended warranties from the retailers. For example I just bought a 98 inch 4k TV set for a corporate conference room and it's TCL. I bought it from Best Buy and got a 5 year warranty on it because when you spend that much money on something you do not want it to fail in a year and a day right after the manufacturer's warranty runs out. Instead if it fails you want to go to the store and have them send 2 guys out who will take the monster off the wall and put a replacement up. You get that if you get the store warranty. So in that class of TV's the stores are going to only stock brands that don't have a high failure rate. I bought the TCL tv because that was the only brand the retailer stocked in that class and price range, and the reason it was the only brand in that class and price range is because the store doesn't want to stock TVs that most buyers are going to get a store warranty on that have a high failure rate.
Bought a 55 inch TLC mini-led quantum dot for 800 euros 2 years ago. The image is great. It's in a very bright room so I went mini-led instead of Oled. No regrets.
2:07 that timestamp is the MAIN reason why I went back to Samsung unfortunately...most TCL's give of a slight "fingerprint " effect in the screens background. I seen it instantly when it first powered on. I changed all type of settings(some has a lack of adv. video Settings) and still the same effect in the background...had to take 2 back and just went back with my 55" Samsung. P.s. Look on the left side of the cartoon being played...sky blue background.
I bought a Vizio TV and it broke a while back. It wasn’t even a 4k. I recently got a TCL 42 inch 4K TV and it works perfectly. Great television, and it was inexpensive as well compared to other brands.
We bought a 32 inch TCL LCD around 5 years ago for 145usd. It has been hanging there since then because the motherboard fried after the warranty was over. And we haven't been able to find a replacement part in the market either. So, there's that about TCL
I have to say I've always been a Sony fan for my tvs and my wife decided to buy the family a new TV for the living room and got a TCL 55" TV to replace our 46" Sony TV. I was a little mad at the start for not speaking to me about it but she wanted to get something as a surprise so could not be to mad. That said I've been nothing but impressed with it. The Android OS and TV is very fast, picture quality is very good and so far I've had no issues. It's definitely made me rethink what I will get when I look at upgrading to my next TV.
I bought a TCL back in 2018 it was their mid tier I forgot the exact model but has 4K HDR with Dolby vision. I’m stunned how well the picture quality has held up and the Roku OS never hiccuped on me. My dad bought a Vizio 75 inch in 2021 and it honestly started to degrade after year, the backlight started to fail to the point like last year or so dark scenes were impossible to watch. So Vizio definitely living up to the their horrible reputation while TCL made me not hesitate again to buy their TVs
i've had two 50 inch vizios back to back in the last 10 years or so and both times the tv's died around the 5 to 6 year mark which seemed ok for what i paid but this time i bought a tcl and i gotta say i'm impressed with the image quality. wish i would've bought a tier above the 4 series instead.
TCL seems to be really good for the average consumer who wants decent PQ without paying $$$. Will not buy an LCD TV though - Only TV I'd ever consider buying these days is an OLED or other self-emissive/per pixel lighting display - which is still likely some time from TCL, at least in the >80" range. I might consider a 100"+ LCD TV for my projector space .... but it won't fit in my doorway/stairwell :(
TCL uses Roku OS, the one that LG uses, the software update will be up to Roku but I don't think it will be a problem. I also have an older Sony TV and the Android TV OS on them was absolutely atrocious, it's so much less responsive than what's on LG and TCL. Plus nowadays you really only need the TV OS for audio/visual configuration, a Chromecast or Apple TV unit will be better for media consumption.
@@metalfly.Android TV is the reason I favored Sony. It’s better than Samsung’s proprietary tv OS and in my opinion better than Roku in terms of being an integrated TV experience. It can be a little sluggish sometimes but it’s much better than say a Chrome-cast dongle
It's not that Vizio had bad quality per se, they have poor support and poor software. My 2021 PQX looks phenomenal still but they literally broke some features and made it unstable and still have failed to fix it with a software update. Their biggest mistake was trying to compete with the higher end tvs lik OLED. They forget half the value on the higher end is support and features, they go together. You can't slap a 3000nit panel and call it high end.
Too bad Roku sorta forced arbitration with their newest updates and you can’t opt out of it. You can’t sue if there is a problem which is sorta worrying for future buyers.
I think the secret to their success is they offer mid-range TV's with high range level specs and performance. It's really hard to beat TCL pricing and quality . Though recently Hisense has been making a play at it and seems to be doing pretty well. It's even more aggressive with specs and pricing sometimes... though their picture processing and QA seem to be slightly behind TCL. but it's getting their. Every year they get a bit closer to narrowing the gap.
The only problem with a TCL/Hisense is that it's an extremely good panel but the upscaling is not even close to what a samsung or sony offers. Native content plays great but since there isn't a lot of native high resolution content available, so since you are relying on upscaling for watching sports/live tv or watching content via netflix which is known to notoriously save bandwidth by streaming at 1440p to 4K screens and its very rare that you get a true 4K signal which is again not even close to bluray quality, so low bitrate native content. which is why you need to think your usecase and content consumption habits to know what kind of stuff you are looking for, going for a samsung means even 720p will look good on 4K panel, but 720p will look like 720p on a TCL/Hisense with close to no upscaling
I think you’re on to something, the extra magic that makes a good looking image is the video processing ASIC, whether it’s upscaling or adjusting colors, contrast, black levels on the fly. I have a 1080 Sony from 2008 and the image/color it presents is quite good. Maybe it could be better in the area of shadow detail, but it’s much better than cheap 4k tvs. And also not crushing whites.
You have no idea how well their upscaling has gotten. TCL and Hisense beat Samsung TV’s in upscaling depending on the model. Samsung’s flagship is basically equal
@@itwasntoptional2513 yeah mate it's called a "flagship" for a reason. They're supposed to be the best of the crop, TCL is up there but signal and image processor in a TV are key components, same as the panel
@@Ka11zer Yeah and as I just said TCL and Hisense are on par with Samsung’s flagship in upscaling as well as content smoothing. It’s not 2019 anymore buddy. They have good processors
The rise of Chinese brands is unstoppable. They have entered the Smart market with (Xiaomi,Huawei) , the PC and Laptop market with Lenovo and now the TV market with TCL. If the things go on like this for a long time then soon the western brands could not complete with the chinese brands.
As someone who works in sales with TVs TCL is an easy sell. Not only do they undercut the larger band names and offer the same quality, the commission they pay is so much better than the traditional brand names that there is next to no point trying to upsell.
Vizio use to be the value leader. Look at CNET reviews from 10 years ago. But they were destined to fail the second their suppliers (e.g. TCL) decided to get into the game and undercut them as the middle man.
They both are Chinese-made. Chinese products are not well-known for their high-quality products. I want the highest quality products for my family and Chinese products are certainly not on my list.
I came from well known TV brands like my old Toshiba Plasma, Samsung LED. Unfortunately the Samsung TV from 2015 stopped powering on so I had to pickup another TV. I was skeptical about Chinese brands like Hisense and TCL. So I started following reviews on the TCL QM8 from various YTubers I follow. Not seeing the TV in person but impressed with the price, reviews and how close the QM8 was compared to previous years OLEDs I pulled the trigger last August and still amazed on how the TV performs. Although it’s not an exact match for the ultra detailed black levels, motion clarity and specular highlights like typical OLEDs, the high brightness levels, not having to baby-sit the TV to avoid burn and lower costs per size of the TV in was my selling point. There are some cons such as the QM8 UI is not ultra snappy like my Samsung or ATV. It takes a bit for the UI to be fully loaded and functional. Which is pretty disappointing for TCL’s flagship line. Seems as if the software updates have been slowing things down compared to day one of ownership. Overall it was a good bargain.
Absolutely love my 85” TCL QM8 and Hisense 100” U8K(only paid $2999 brand new). I even own the LG 77 inch C1 and these new value brands are incredible for performance/price, I’m done with OLED until the pricing is cheaper and if they get bigger.
Its not just the Panel that matters. The processor chip and Image processing algorithms matter. Thats why the TV quality differs between Sony, Samsung, and LG. LG's image processing being the furthest behind (opinion).
Just got me a TCL TV today and im never going back to Samsung after this. Android TV, Neo-QLED, Dolby Vision, FreeSync VRR, 55 inches, a reasonable price and the list goes on
I had (well still own but don't use anymore) a TCL 42" 4K tv which I used as a monitor for several years. I've since updated to a Sony 65" for my living room and an 55" LG OLED for my bedroom but TCL is surely the best bang for the buck along with Hisense.
Sony also uses Samsung OLED panels for their high-end models like the A95K and A95L. These models are superior to Samsung's models that use the same panels, as they have a better processor, better heatsink on the back of the screen to cool and extend the lifespan of the panel, and they license Dolby Vision so you can watch the highest quality HDR content. Samsung still doesn't license Dolby Vision and most titles don't have HDR10+, so you're almost always limited to standard HDR on Samsung TVs. I believe most reviewers rate the Sony XR-77A95L as the absolute best TV currently available.
I have a 50" TCL in the Bedroom as a computer monitor and a 65" TCL in the Living Room as a computer monitor with surround sound. They are great. I know that better picture quality is out there but for the price these are hard to beat. Both have the Roku features that expand them beyond just being computer monitors.
I'd like to see TCL make 50" and larger with *NO* smart TV features, instead allowing the buyer to choose their streaming device from the likes of Amazon, Apple, nVidia and Roku connected over the HDMI port. That way, TCL could cut the price of their TV's even more.
TCL is going to take a huge loss. Their Roku embedded TV is getting a huge backlash. Apparently, Roku just updated their terms and conditions where you have to agree to not sue them if they have done you wrong. If you do not agree, then your TV becomes disabled. You can't even change the hdmi port. Basically, they hold your TV hostage. It is an extremely shameful act from Roku. Unfortunately, I have TLC from 3 years ago, and I can't even return it. Now, it has become an expensive paper paperweight.
It's just like Huawei, they started as an economical option but really put the R&D to offer the same features as the more premium TVs, I bought a QLED TV from them on black friday for $400 and I'm blown away by the quality
As someone who still owns a 3D TV and watches 3D movies (Dredd, Mad Max: Fury Road, G.I.T.S 2017) I will not take this 3D slander lying down, I will sit instead 🙃

I got a TCL TV a couple years ago, thinking I was just getting something cheap and disposable. But I was pleasantly surprised! First, the interface was more responsive than other TVs I'd used. That might sound like a small thing, but it's actually huge. And I had no idea what the "Roku" thing was supposed to be but it means I'm getting free ad-supported TV and movies. I particularly like that it's not just the latest generic content. I've been using it for the 1976 _Bionic Woman_ show and 1984's _Murder, She Wrote._
@@TheAbinn Ehhh... a lot of their screens suffer from vignetting. Their OLEDs have ultra-extreme ABL dimming. Their newest series have buzzy, shrill, inductors of poor quality that sound like the TV is dying all the time. They're stuck on 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs because they refuse to produce their own SoCs and instead use garbage MediaTek chipsets which are slow, have insufficient RAM for Google TV, and are limited in HDMI bandwidth. They're, no doubt, the king of color science, but they're far from the king of screens overall.
I live in the netherlands, grouping tvs here by price then rating them within the price bands, the only competition for TCL is Philips here, but that's because they don't have import tariffs. they're assembled here, mostly from inhouse parts as far as i can tell.
I got a 2019 Samsung Q80R QLED that retails at $1,500 and I got it at a used TV store for $800 and I love everything about this TV. I don't think I'll ever get another brand of TV again but TCL might be my second choice. I really just wanted this TV so I could play games in 4K
Here's the thing, I'm a Samsung guy and tried LG. LG is OVERRATED unless it's the G series. My Samsung tvs are great BUT I went with a QM8 85-INCH for $1200 and it's only bested by my S95B. It's superb and cost less than my 55-inch S95B did.
> All of [Sony's] OLED panels are actually made by LG Sony uses whatever OLED panels are best at the moment. Currently, the A95L uses Samsung Display QD-OLED panels.
Are Sony actually using LG/Samsung panels, or are LG and Smasung manufacturing Sony's panels for them? Becasue after Sony "left" the panel making business, they seem to keep showing off various panel tech that is actually their own, especially as of late. And I don't see Samsung and LG just letting Sony get away with using their tech better than they do.
Exactly! And all of those things factor into both cost AND long-term reliability. Just because it comes out of the same factory does NOT mean it is of the same level of quality. I wish more people actually did their homework in this area and paid closer attention to how things are actually done. The devil is ALWAYS in the details!
Bought two new TCL 4k tv's to replace older Vizio tv's. Both TCL quit within one year and went back to using old Vizio tv's. Vizio's seem to outlast TCL several times over with a better picture!
TCL was already making TV components . Reminds me of an Indian company called samtel which made parts for CRT tvs They started selling tvs in India and immediately captured the market with really cheap price and bulk order deals. Almost every hotel in India back in the days of CRT were samtel
Sony lg samsung still quality kings Tcl is not beating them in quality sales may be cheaper and way to affordable in that price point i know tcl is good👌
our first Tv was TCL crt tv and it's still siting in a corner and works fine when plugged in. If it is not working, you just need to smack the side and viola it works again.
TCL has a lot of software learning to do. I love the picture of my TCL mini LED bit I'm constantly having issues with the interface and issues with soundbar connectivity.
What TCL did to BlackBerry and Alcatel is completely unforgivable. There, in my personal opinion, is no coming back (or any sort of redemption) from that.
You got a point about early TCL tvs. I had a few and the brightness and viewing angles were horrible and definitely issues with blacklight bleeding. It left me with the feeling that TCL = bargain Chinese knockoff tvs. Obviously they've improved quite a bit. We'll see how things go when my current Samsung goes out
It’s consumer demand. There’s a vast swathe of buyers that don’t care about panel type, they just want an affordable and bigger TV to replace their older and smaller model. TCL has captured this market, along with Hisense. Sure, those who want the best panel tech will go with the big boys of Samsung, Sony and LG, but for the rest? If you couldn’t care less about the OLED vs Mini/Micro LED war, etc, and just want a cheap TV that will offer decent enough streaming performance and live TV, then TCL will do.
And that's exactly the problem. Uninformed, uneducated US consumers don't actually do their homework before buying. They just march into a store and buy the cheapest thing off of the shelf. Companies like TCL, Hisense and Vizio only exist today for one reason: large numbers of very uneducated, uninformed consumers that only care about getting the cheapest price available. Sad.
TCL often uses pretty stock android tv, the chips that run the software are actually pretty deccent and its smooth, they have pretty good tv panels, theyre very price competitive and there arent any much bigger drawbacks than other brands.Theyve exploited the economy of scale with mass productions, without sacrificing on quality
I feel like I'm overdue for a tv upgrade. Im watching this on a 14 year old 50' vizio tv that I bought from best buy that was used as a floor display model. Been a good tv for all the years of use I've put on it but it definitely shows that its not up to par anymore when it comes picture quality.

Trash quality 🤮
I had the same issue. Bought a Sony TV in 2019 and it died after 3 years (it had a big green box that kept getting bigger), meanwhile the TCL TV I bought in 2016 is still going strong. These days I only buy TCL & Ffalcon (TCL's budget brand) TV's.
TVs will last on average 8years now. it’s not surprising your Sony died, it was at the end of its life
My Sony x900e died at 7 years.

Roku is terrible, and is the one reason I don't like the TCL TV I have

Glad to hear that man!
Outdated is a feature. It knows its place.
To be fair, no one ever asked for more features than being able to stream to the tv
almost every TV runs over 7 years perfectly.... it's not a phone bro lol
When I buy TCL electrical appliances, I never worry about quality.
We have a 65", 55", and 40" TCL TVs currently. Ever since 2014, not once did the brand fail us.
No regrets.
TCL mini LED is the real deal. Good enough not to miss OLED
I might consider a 100"+ LCD TV for my projector space .... but it won't fit in my doorway/stairwell :(
How is their software updates? My Sony TV got an update 8 years after release
Honestly you're better off never connecting your TV to the internet
@@metalfly.Android TV is the reason I favored Sony. It’s better than Samsung’s proprietary tv OS and in my opinion better than Roku in terms of being an integrated TV experience.

@@My_Old_YT_Account then what’s the point of having a tv
@@dennisp8520 Watching tv? Playing video games? Both from their own boxes plugged through HDMI?
It's not that Vizio had bad quality per se, they have poor support and poor software. My 2021 PQX looks phenomenal still but they literally broke some features and made it unstable and still have failed to fix it with a software update. Their biggest mistake was trying to compete with the higher end tvs lik OLED. They forget half the value on the higher end is support and features, they go together. You can't slap a 3000nit panel and call it high end.
Too bad Roku sorta forced arbitration with their newest updates and you can’t opt out of it. You can’t sue if there is a problem which is sorta worrying for future buyers.
Do you go around suing software companies often?
Don’t worry - Trump tariffs will ruin TCLs appeal in the US market
As someone who works in sales with TVs TCL is an easy sell. Not only do they undercut the larger band names and offer the same quality, the commission they pay is so much better than the traditional brand names that there is next to no point trying to upsell.
How about TCL vs Hisense?
Vizio use to be the value leader. Look at CNET reviews from 10 years ago. But they were destined to fail the second their suppliers (e.g. TCL) decided to get into the game and undercut them as the middle man.

TCL should be proud. I am also using a TCL tv with QLED. Amazing display.

After many years fanboy of LG and Sony i purchased 65 TCL miniled 4k 144 hz tv for 1200 euro and i love it
Sony also uses Samsung OLED panels for their high-end models like the A95K and A95L.

You got a point about early TCL tvs. I had a few and the brightness and viewing angles were horrible and definitely issues with blacklight bleeding. I'm fine with my LG C2 4K OLED TV, I love it for watching movies and as gaming monitor!
