Demo Footage from JVC GY-HM170UA 4K Video Camcorder

  • This is a short video I compiled after a few months of use with the JVC 4K Camcorder, the GY-GM170UA (what a mouthful). I decided to share the "SOOC" straight out of the camera version as well as what the footage might look like if you gave it a little bit of a color correction / grading.
    Overall, I've really been enjoying this camera. It has all sorts of handy features like zebras, focus peaking, XLR inputs, a variety of recording modes, and shutter speed selections you wouldn't normally find on a DSLR based video platform, so it definitely has its bonuses when you compare it to the more popular video camera options available.
    It also has a few shortcomings of course, but if you know what they are and are able to work around the few small issues this camera has then I think you'll be very happy with it.
    When I was shopping for this camera, I was watching reviews and demo footage just like this for all sorts of cameras, so here's a little something to give back to the community that helped me pick my next great video camera.
    Do you want to read a short review I wrote based on the same camera? You can find that on my blog, linked here:

      Thanks for your comment! Really impressed it's held value that much actually since thats pretty close to the price I've paid this many years ago now. Also worth looking at is the Canon XC10. a little clunkier in controls - lots of menu driven - smaller size, I think similar price point.

    Hi! Thank you for posting. I'm thinking of getting one of these as a little brother for my JVC LS300 that I like a lot. There are times that a built in lens and powered zoom would be nice, and frankly a MFT powered zoom lens for my LS300 is nearly the price of picking up a JVC 170 So you are color correcting. Are you shooting in Cinema Gama mode with a standard or subdued color matrix to capture more like a LOG type of aquisition then correcting in post? I shoot my JVC LS300 in J-LOG then correct in post.. and that usually looks similar to Cinema Gama with standard color but more dynamic range. How are you using your camera at this point? Thoughts now that it's been almost a year since you posted your video.

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alex,
      Glad you like it. Thats pretty much exactly how I am shooting. Although sometimes I have the gamma mode on standard and tried out some of the wide dynamic range settings that it has built in.
      I use this camera for events and interviews - mostly where it can be plugged into a wall and have an operator the whole time. Or I sometimes use it for shorter shoots when it has to be mobile / away from AC power.

    I know this video is a year old, but I have this camera and have a few questions. What settings are you using for your colors? There's no j-log function for this one, but it seems quite close that way you can color grade later in post. It would help out a lot because the colors I am getting right now aren't great, and don't give me enough to work with in post. Thanks!

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been a while since I set the camera up, and I know I did a lot of fiddling with it early on and never changed most of it since. but if you want to somewhat flatten exposure so you get something that looks closer to a log format you could try a few things;
      cinema subdued for color matrix
      standard gamma
      WDR off
      stretch black toe,
      and try boosting the master black a bit.
      that's what I've got it set at right now, but i can't say for certain how I shot the clips in this video anymore. not likely too much different.
      good luck! Thanks for watching and your comment.

    When I shoot inside with 1080p it is extremely dark and the picture quality is extremely soft. Any idea how to fix this?

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey dino check a few things;
      open your iris to let in more light, but it also makes picture more soft with shallower DOF. so you need to find your own balance of what suits the scene and your focal length.
      and then check your gain on the side, the little H-M-L. for high medium low, and you can set what +dB those are set for yourself in your settings. But each level up makes the picture noisier. So theres a balance for your scene and your lighting you have to choose yourself.
      And also, you can set your shutter with the up and down buttons on the side close to battery, locked off shots or limited motion in your frame and you might be able to use a slower shutter to let more light in.
      Also, shooting in high frame rates will let less light in too, so if youre doing 60 or 120 then that will make it darker as well.
      Lots of choices to make. good luck.
      thanks for watching and for your comment.

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i should add, i don't particularly love this camera's low light capabilities. best thing you can do for it is bring more light inside.

  • @lumpyren
    @lumpyren 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    IS the color correction the darker or the lighter? If it's the lighter then the lens has Massive purple fringing and it has an incredibly noisy sensor.

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      lumpyren the flatter looking picture is the original. Yes I find it quite noisy in everything but the best light. Purple fringing depends on aperture. You can get a good clean picture out of it. I shoot with it fairly regularly for certain situations - used it today to shoot a hockey game. Thanks for watching and commenting on the video!

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks for watching and for your comment. The camera does have a lot of settings to change, so to go over them all could be difficult, but how about checking a few things, like your Gain selector, maybe try adjusting your iris with one of the rings, see if the ND filter makes any difference, or maybe you've got your shutter speed too slow?
      would like to help but there are just so many possibilities.

  • @destinedtoroam
    @destinedtoroam 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Do you have to color correct and boost the exposure for every shot? Does it ever take a good shot on the first try? I'm thinking of getting one, but I feel like you shouldn't have to do that much correction.

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jessica, Thanks for your comment.
      You can get a good shot on the first try for sure. I usually set all my cameras for the neutral/subdued color and exposure to allow for more room to grade it with.
      But if you want to shoot in a picture profile that was better suited to looking good straight out of the camera, you can definitely do that too. I don't know that i have any examples to share on that note though.
      And full manual exposure, so you can expose for the light any way you like really.

      hey ReyesVisuals, thanks for leaving your comment.
      I also did this recently in my fcpx tracker for sky replacement video. Do you use FCPX? basically -- make the clip the way you want it with grading. layer it up on top of the old one. turn off the edits on the top one. make a mask (in fcpx I use 'trim' crop tools) and then keyframe the opening shot of clip with the trimmed section in one place, and then keyframe final frame of video with trimmed section in another section of frame. presto bango! you're done.
      I hope that helps - should work in other NLEs as well.

    The way you showed your graded shots made me quite happy. It's nice to see them side-by-side and you found a better way to do it than any other I've seen. Anyway, how bad is the smoothing from noise reduction on this camcorder? A major pain I have with many cameras is loss of fine detail due to in-camera NR that's often not controllable (a notable exception being my Panasonic G7 which sadly isn't a camcorder) and I'd rather have the noise along with the detail than a muddy smoothed image. I already have a Panasonic VX870 4K camcorder and am interested in upgrading to this, but I'm still on the fence.

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jody. I'm glad the video has helped you so far. Thanks for watching and for you comment.
      on the noise > I don't use any software for noise reduction, so if I shoot something with noise, it will find it's way into the edit. Thinking to the last wedding I shot though, I'd say my canon 6D with an f/4 lens had a cleaner image when I was shooting something like the first dances where it was quite dark.
      It is really great when you have lots of light to work with though.
      i know that's not really a helpful answer to your question, but it's the best I've got. haha.

I see it when am in the audio menu but its not on display when am on recording and it won't let me turn in on in settings its there but grayed out. I tried reading the book and it doesn;t say anything about if its grayed out what to do. Now I might have my own answer and dont know. It has a histogram and from watching the videos they are in the same place. Now I do know the Histogram was not on the original but it is now with the software up dated. So maybe I cant have them both on at the same daymm time? lmao

  • @jonathanbashirproductionsl2226
    @jonathanbashirproductionsl2226 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh chris one more thing to add, they say the major difference between the 170 and the 200 is that the 170 cannot live broadcast, well that too is a lie. If you added the Teradek Clip encoder can mount onto a camera’s shoe mount, connect via HDMI, and transmit via superior 5 GHz WiFi at framerates including 23.976p, 25p and 29.97p. Using Teradek apps in an iPad or iPhone, it can have graphics superimposed, switch between cameras, and playback prerecorded videos. Just incase you wanted to get this it can be used with any cameras hot shoe. Just a little tidbit of information. I learn fast.

    Whats up Chris, I was drinking in a bunch of videos about camera use and I thought about this being my only camera and to shoot video so I did some homework on upgrading my phone. Now I have a paid off iphone 6 plus and am sick of staying in debt because you don't have a thousand dollars each time a new phone comes out. Well I was watching this News broadcast and I heard about this Phone only on T Mobile. It was rated as keeping up very well with the New IPhone Xr or whatever the latest one is and I refused to get in debt for another phone. So I got this phone. It is the Oneplus 6T and it shoots in 4K at 60fps. It has Pro camera settings that you can set to auto or dial right on screen to the ISO, Gain, Fstops, etc right on the screen. It has the self level and the stableness when walking is not bad either. I will use this phone to shoot and post my first video with it and we will be talking more soon.

Most companies I can think of won't iterate any substantial changes in a product line with a single trailing digit model change like that so I think you're safe.

    Hi there, as someone else said, I know this is a bit older video but I just ordered this camera. I am on a budget but wanted the 4k quality as a option and nothing comes close to this price. I went to school for photography and then met this woman who I thought loved me but long story short I had spent about close to 10 K in equipment and we had a nasty break up. While I was out of the house she sold everything and all my work tools which took years to accumulate. But anyways am starting over and I also started back up my production company. (Jonathan Bashir Productions, LLC). I know its a learning curve with everything but I heard you mention final cut pro correct, as your editing software? Well I have the adobe studio, I use it in school so I get the 20 a month student discount. Now I know they have film editing there but am told its much more complicated whats your take on that? are you set to auto focus?
      do you have the focus read out on screen showing the distance at which your lens is focused? and does that distance line up with what is in your scene?
      is there ample lighting (high gain situations can decrease image quality, while not directly blurring, they can show as less than sharp)
      white backgrounds displaying as yellow, I'd check your white balance settings firstly.
