Glad you were happy with our service Bob. Some very sensible thoughts on the camera, great image and value for money. But with some obvious compromises to get the price down. Hope it serves you well!
Great review. Thanks very much. I've not seen many real-life zoom test-shots. For instance, how much of the frame would the moon fill, on maximum zoom? Any comments appreciated.
One more HUGE disadventage of this particular JVC GY-HM200 model is: *- luck to have the Waveform Monitor* *- luck to have the Vectroscope or Histogram*
Hi Bob. You are a master. What settings in the picture profile of the gy hm170 did you use to film the cats in the review? I have one of this camcorders too. Did you notice some flickering effect on high contrast areas? It seems like a master black problem. When you set the blacks up to +8 the flickering dissapears. Did you experience this problem? In every format i have this issue. Thanks
Thank you for this review. I just received mine in the mail. I managed to update the firmware, but I have a hard time making it work. I am not a professional (obviously), what resources can I use to learn how to operate this camera?
I have the Sony FDR AX100 4K camcorder. The reason I prefer it is because it has the Zeiss lens. The JVC GY-HM170 4K does not use a Zeiss lens. Any photographer or videographer knows that the lens is the most important part on a camera or camcorder. Quality built lenses are what makes the pictures come out great and you won't get that in cheap lenses.
HI. I BUY THE CAMERA JVC GY-HM170.......WHAT DOES MEAN...THE OPTION ACTIVATE IN OPERATION CAMERA PROCESS, CALL.....WDR ( WIDE DINAMIC RANGE)? is the same HDR ( HIGH DINAMIC RANGE )IN VIDEO? WHEN ACTIVATE THIS OPTION WDR?....IN SCENE WITH MORE CONTRAST IN THE SCENE? FOR CAPTURE DETAILS IN SHADOW AND HIGH LIGHTS IN THE SCEN SHOT? HOW MAKE THE CAMERA WHEN ACTIVATE THIS OPCION WDR?......THE CAMERA CAPTURE TWO DIFERENCE SHUTTER..AT ONE...AND AFTER THE PROCESSOR CHIP....PUT TOGETHER TWO EXPOSITIONS IN ONE CLIP...FOR HAVE DETAIL IN THE SHADOWS AND LIGHTS? IS CORRECT?
Moreover .... I have got THREE other older JVC made camcorders and ONE "Canon XA10". Mostly .... I am using those JVC-s instead of my Canon .... just because of the quality of their recordings !!!! Especially fantastic warm SATURATION of them, where grass is really green and sky is really blue - not bluish/grey, like with Canon XA10 !!!!
Thanks for your review. It is done very professionally. I think you must have been lucky. The price, with the xlr handle, seems to be around £1500 unless you know different. At that price then surely the Panasonic LUMIX fz2000 plus an atomos ninja infirno for around £2100 gets you a perfect professional 4:2:2 kit with the best monitor possible. Only my opinion but the J VC reviews are not great.
You have a very valid point. When I purchased the JVC camera, the Panasonic FZ2000 was not available, neither the GH5 etc. I discarded the GH4 because the autofocus was lousy, I know as I owned one. Technology changes so fast and now you are right, there are many 'better' choices. I still really like the JVC for no record limit, everything is builtin, XLR inputs etc, etc. BUT the monitor is really poor, I now mainly use my new Sony A7iii and GH5.
Thanks for taking out the time to reply. I am currently using the fz2000 with the Saramonic MixMic XLR. I have the V-Log L installed and the whole package cost me just over £1000. Incredible value for what you are getting. If you have not heard about the MixMic please go and check it out. I also use the Saramonic 3 transmitter 1 receiver wireless lavalier system so I am well covered for sound options!!
I have a mixmic from Saramonic, I have it for sale cheap on ebay. Its a great bit of kit, but I mainly use Sonys and I have the Sony K2m XLR adaptor so its not needed anymore. I do have the Seramonic UWmic9 radio mics, the set of 3 (2 transmittors, 1 receiver) and its great.
Wish I had known you before you bought your Sony XLR. Because you seem to have many mic options, then the Tascam DR-70D is an absolute steal from Thomann at £214 and mostly under £250 from other sellers. If I had more mic options, then that would have been my choice. Really like your videos and look forward to your next one.

Have you noticed that the HM170 has significantly worse image stabilizer that the Sony AX53, which has awesome stabilizer. For a camcorder that is supposed to be used handheld a lot, this is a serious deficiency, no wonder it is so cheap.
Great review! Thank you! I like your no BS approach.

ProAV TV Price increase on this camera in 2019?
Great review. Thanks very much. I've not seen many real-life zoom test-shots. For instance, how much of the frame would the moon fill, on maximum zoom? Any comments appreciated.
I am also used to frame the shot, instead of zooming !!!!
I am zooming only on occasions !!!!

Like your reviews. BTW how are you delivering your 4k footage ? What is it intended for, obviously not a disc presentation, so I'm curious.
Hi. Thanks for the review. Can you do a video about knee, gamma and other settings? I'm trying to achieve a film look, if possible.
I have the HD version of this camera. Great bit of kit. Would like to see this
So many people were already compaining about this LENS CAP !!!!
