Maschine is just a modern version of the SP1200 but a controller to a DAW (because it’s tethered to the daw even standalone imo) but if you can work with the limitations and add external gear (SP or whatever digitak or teenage engineering device) I think you’ll be good. And my biggest selling point has always been that 9th Wonder also use maschine so 🤷🏽♂️
Last year, I made the switch from Maschine to Live, here's a little comparison I can give The pros for Maschine were: - The great integration of all Native Instruments plugins and hardware. It was seemless, NI really know how to create a good ecosystem. - Some of the stock plugins work amazingly well. Never have I heard a better stock plugin than the built-in grain delay that Maschine offers. - Exporting separate tracks is much more intuitive than in Live. The cons, oh boy: - It fails as a DAW. It's essentially a glorified loop station. Automating in song mode is just not an option, as the automations you apply, only work on pattern level. - The extent to which it supports 3rd party plugins, can cause headaches sometimes. - The sampling you showed can be done quicker in Live, both Live and Maschine have hardware that enables quick slicing. - The way you record external audio in Maschine is archaic at best. - Maschine is just extremely poorly optimized, once you start creating a heavily layered project, it's more prone to crashing than actual DAWs. Maschine is really handy as a plug-in in another DAW, and does indeed allow for quick beat building, but I would never replace a proper DAW with it, because it's too limited.
Totally fair!!! I've never used ableton but the UI looks amazing!!! might have to check it out!!! I've always been curious!!! You're totally right tho, Maschine needs to update for sure!!!
Maschine can't fails as a DAW, because it is a Music production and performance system, so more like an MPC or Electron. I use Bitwig and Maschine and love this combination.

I agree with ya, buying an MK3 changed my life. I haven’t touched logic since I bought the Maschine. One suggestion for you is to use the hardware and skip the mouse and the 2.0 interface; you can do 95% of it on the MK3. Even better add a Kontrol MK2 and have it all.
Playing those slices is really cool! Maybe next you can show the full process after you have your loops. Like if you were to add all the patterns like you showed, then what? Export to another daw for vocals?
It amazes me how defensive and scared people get when you say that something like Maschine (or an MPC) is a DAW or like a DAW. They don’t get that products like the MPC we’re dealing with digital audio, had some built in effects and mixing and had a sequencer, thus they were just as much of a Digital Audio Workstation as Logic, Cubase and the rest. What people are scared of when you say that Maschine is a DAW is that it seems harder than using a ‘me too’ DAW that everyone uses. People fear different. Simple as that! Personally, I get where you’re coming from; others won’t.
I hate to break it to you, but the Maschine Software is NOT A DAW, it is a Music Production and Performance System (so more like an MPC or an Electron). Can you make complete electronic tracks with it? YES. I produced my first 2 EPs after Corona 100% in Maschine, and I do still use it in Bitwig now in every project (More as a sketchbook for ideas). But, it is not a real DAW in the traditional meaning (like Reaper f.e.) because it misses some features for this title - f.e. try to create a podcast with it or make a MixDown of a multitrack bandrecording. But again, it does not need to be a DAW, cause what it does is pretty awesome and I am so in love with the workflow it offers.
A little suggestion to have a look at Maschine workflow. The way you use it is a little bit strange. There are many things you can do differently from how you do it (see using Scenes, patterns instead of clips…and others). Oh…and to slice a sample, you don’t need to hit record. That said, maybe you use it like this because it fits better to you…but my impression is that you stocked to the first things you learned without checking deeper
No I started on logic and have only recently started using maschine!!! I appreciate your suggestions tho and I am getting better slowly but surely 😂 thanks for the input tho!!! I’ve also used FL and Abelton jsyk!!!
I used Maschine until its encoder stared to send random signals (the resisatnce dropped after a few month ). The negative thing about Maschien is that it doent compensate plugin latencies, so anything needs mto be resampled to make things tight or use plugins without latencies. Another negative thing of Maschine is that its GUI is calculated on teh CPU.
Maschine 2 is awesome, but it looks a bit too awesome when you lay things down perfectly in one shot. You should show as well how much it sucks when you want to correct mistakes or move things around. In general I agree though. It's a nice piece of software.
I go between both. I do find that when I have my NI keyboard and the Maschine MK 2 connected to my Mac at the same time. The Maschine DAW at times freezes. But yea. It’s even possible to use Maschine the DAW within Logic as well although it has some limitations. Crazy stuff lol. Keep making these cool tutorials. 😎👍🏽

Maschine is capable of far more than making loops and beats. The 'totally useless as s daw'-comments here are a bit unfair I think. Maschine does do things differently than other daws. Song automation, for instance, can be done via clips. For me, Maschine is the perfect daw for making / composing music (indiei'sch pop/rock/singer-songwriter stuff that is, for me). It is so immiment and inspirational. I also record vocals anf guitars with it, no problem. Use the groups as busses. Gate mode for audiotracks is awesome in finding out what works in a song / melody. For final mixing and mastering, i"d export to Studio One 6, with Softube Console 1. The tools we have today, amazing! Something's only useless when you make no use of it.
To me, finishing stuff in Maschine is a chore compared to working in Ableton Live. Lots of things that don't work as you'd expect it from experience with other DAWs, so many basic features are still missing 15 years after v1.0 and development is basically dead with 1 or 2 new features every 5 years or so (if any). Still regret buying this thing. If you want a real DAW try live and if you need a controller, get yourself a Push as well.
Man wow, you just made my progress with Maschine so much easier. I use a Mikro mk3. Do you know if I can do what you did with the slicing as far as setting slices with the mikro? Live your videos man. Keep it up. You got a fan for sure.
Are you using logic pro to record because you have a dynamic mic? If so I found a way to stream the audio instantly from logic to maschine so that you can record directly in maschine
I've been very interested in Maschine recently, but I think that you and other Maschine users who discuss why they use Maschine as their main DAW have missed the point when discussing the advantages of Maschine. First of all, the advantage of Maschine is not the function of the software, because anyone who fully understands or has used mainstream DAW software (such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic, etc.) will not think that the function of Maschine software is an advantage, but a big disadvantage. You must admit that it is not a complete DAW at all. If your goal is just to play some rhythms and create a few loops, then it's fine, but if your goal is to make real finished music, then its functions are not enough, and it is full of limitations. I think the real advantages of Maschine are two points. First, the integration of all sounds, instruments, and plug-ins of NI allows you to quickly obtain very textured sounds and effects. Second, and most importantly, is the Maschine hardware itself. On the one hand, it allows you to get a full tactile experience in the production process. Many people underestimate this point. At least for me, feeling and vibe are very important elements in making music. When I use Maschine to make music, the touch and excellent lighting effects make me full of inspiration. This is why I have been paying attention to the topic of Maschine recently, because last week, I used it to make what I think is the best beat I have ever made without fully mastering Maschine. On the other hand, Maschine is a Pad Midi controller with a very good design. Its workflow is very smooth. It is no exaggeration to say that it is a pleasure to use it. After a certain learning curve, creating on Maschine is a very smooth thing. I have been using Ableton Live and FL Studio for four or five years. After a short learning period, I think my operation on Maschine is as smooth as operating DAW on a computer. So, I think what NI needs to do now is to upgrade their software, whether it is to release a real DAW that integrates all NI products (if so, I will run to the street and cheer loudly), or just upgrade the Maschine software to 3.0, bringing more complete functions, truly usable piano roll, usable automation in linear time, more complete arrangement functions, more detailed editing functions for audio, and the ability to freely place and manipulate audio in linear time, etc. I noticed on the official forum of NI that NI plans to release Maschine 3.0 software this year, and I hope they can surprise us. I have very high expectations for this update, and I hope it can bring me a complete DAW experience, so that I will not hesitate to uninstall other DAWs, because I really love this hardware.
I think if you go Bitwig then you only need a MIkro because they actually have amazing scripted support for that controller. The MK3 is technically superior (built in interface, more controls), but the Micro is more than good enough and you can use the money you save to buy the Bitwig license. Far better beat making DAW, IMO. Lol. I think that's going to be Maschine's biggest issue. Like... the software is basically never worth it unless you're using a standalone, these days. The only reason to use it is personal preference - so long as you stay on Komplete Kontrol 2.9.6 so that you can drag and drop samples/loops from the Komplete Kontrol browser to the host DAW. I downgraded Komplete Kontrol on all of my PCs and my Mac because the 3.x version upgrade was such a downgrade.
Maschine is my sketchbook for 4 years as soon as I want to deal with samples, and montait instruments. But I always make the finish for transitions, FX, mix and mastering in Studio one. Thanks for your video anyway 👍
Maschine is not a DAW. It is not advertised as a DAW by Native Instruments. It has never been advertised as a DAW. That being said, it is an amazing hardware and software application to compose beats and song ideas with. But you will absolutely need a DAW to finish a song with vocals and all that.
Strictly speaking, Maschine 2 IS a DAW - they just don’t call it one. The combination of hardware and software is merely redefining what used to be hardware based - desks, outboard - to software i.e plugins to what is now a combination of both which you can also use standalone. Pro Tools Intro (for example) is classed as a DAW and I’m pretty sure Maschine 2 can everything it can do and more…. 🤔
Great review and explanation! (I left Logic too, tried Waveform Traction, then Maschine Micro and now landed on SeratoStudio as it works like a Maschine but without a hardware just on my laptop, and adding a DJ controller gives me the Maschine hardware feel for when I want it.) ..... you should make a video answer my 5 reasons why I left Maschine: th-cam.com/video/TQmkP8zMRzM/w-d-xo.html
Seems cool for writing ideas and doing loop based stuff, but this is no where near an actual DAW. If you're making complex genres this thing would be totally useless except for maybe writing the drums.
Naw you taking crazy I just got the mpc one I'm making full beats of different genres standalone you don't need a daw I been using fl studio since I was 11 years old hardware better some people just don't have the real musical knowledge 🤷🏿♂️
I could never use Maschine. It is a static Tempo/Meter Change device. If you are into beats tho - it's cool. But not meant for serious composition. It has zero ability to do tempo & meter changes within a composition. Sorry buts that a no for me. My Maschine is collecting dust. I thought that it would be useful. After I thoroughly went through it , i noticed that it is not faster at beat-making than my DAW: Q-Base. So, i just work with Q-Base bc I can manipulate my Tempos & Time Signatures and naturally adjust loops/samples w/time stretching on the fly. Maschine does have great expansions. But I'm a Composer, & I don't like to write 'Static-Tempo' music.
Yeah it really depends on your preferences. For me, I love loop based be eat making. But I know cube base is super clutch for tempo, switches, and stuff. If you say you’re a composer, then yes, machine probably wouldn’t suit all your needs but for my purposes it definitely does the job!!!

Appreciate it!!! Yeah studio one was my original Daw before transferring to logic than finally maschine 2!!glad to hear you liked the vid!!!
I prefer to start in Maschine then export to FL To Arrange
Totally fair!! Maschine makes that process so easy as well!
Crazy
Thanks I appreciate it!!
Maschine is not a DAW. It is not advertised as a DAW by Native Instruments. It has never been advertised as a DAW. That being said, it is an amazing hardware and software application to compose beats and song ideas with. But you will absolutely need a DAW to finish a song with vocals and all that.
It’s true! I jump around from maschine to logic. But as far as beat making goes I don’t have much of an issue using the maschine software
Thanks for sharing!!! Definitely will consider it!!!
Just slave maschine thru logic.. Best of both worlds…
It’s true. I’d love to just have it integrated tho!!!!
Seems cool for writing ideas and doing loop based stuff, but this is no where near an actual DAW. If you're making complex genres this thing would be totally useless except for maybe writing the drums.
Yeah that’s a fair point!! Good as a loop station tho. Paired with another DAW it’s amazing!!!
Naw you taking crazy I just got the mpc one I'm making full beats of different genres standalone you don't need a daw I been using fl studio since I was 11 years old hardware better some people just don't have the real musical knowledge 🤷🏿♂️
you cant beat the drum looping live with their effects and the depth of projects you can make for live productions
Grammy winning songs have been made on less@@BlackBeltTitus

@@BlackBeltTitus it is great for what you use it for. Excellent for Beat-Makers & the likes. No Doubt abt it !!
I've composed a few songs on it just to fully learn it's sequencing abilities. And yes, It is quite capable of making hits in today's climate. Also, I'm aware of the various urban-producers that do absolute wonders with this device.👍🏻
Good Luck in your musical endeavors 👍🏻
All The Best !!
If its gathering dust please post it to me 🙃I will pay the postage - watch "How to Use Everything in MASCHINE MK3, Beat Making Masterclass part 1,2 & 3" by Boris Mezga - I felt your same frustration and mine was also gathering dust as the manuals were not helpful until I came across these videos from NI - I compose jazz, rock, classical, funk etc and Maschine 3 with Maschine 2 Software is actually very versatile it's not just a beat box I realised and I am. now loving it
