I listened to this performance of Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 by Sergiu Celibidache and the Munich Philharmonic on that very day at Suntory Hall. It ’s a good memory of life...☺

The Karajan Celibidache rivalry was in part an intra-Vlach issue. HvK was 1/4 Vlach.

@@nicolapascoli4580 As Generalmusikdirektor of Europe, Karajan had a rivalry with everyone, e.g. Günter Wand. I suspect it was personal with Celibidache, who was referred to as "that filthy Romanian" upon consideration as a successor to Furtwängler in Berlin. Obviously Furtwängler hated Karajan. And Karajan was not Greek nor Serbian but a quarter Aromanian himself. And Karajan specifically preferred voices like Cebotari (another Romanian/Moldovan) and Lubin and Dernesch and Janowitz, saying that he wanted Wagner(?) playing removed from the (Munich?) "beer gardens".
What don't you get? Oh, and btw. Karajan lost his beloved BPO over his failed attempt to hire Sabina Meyer, a genius clarinetist and artist who happened to be female. Conversely Celibidache notoriously was quoted as saying that an orchestra with a female (brass) player sounds like a Woman's Orchestra. I say this despite being a lifelong chauvinist myself.

Thank you for expending the effort to provide those exact timings...
If i may make a comment: it seems, if i understand their "harrrumphs" correctly, that many commentators have criticized the Finale of this symphony as being somewhat out of character with the rest of the work. Celi and the band show that with judicious choices of tempi, this need not be the case at all---- conductor and and orchestra merely need the courage of their convictions to play the slower material as slowly as necessary to make the appropriate contrast with the rather jaunty initial thematic material. To incorporate some of the perceptive commentary of analyst Robert Simpson, it is more vital to uncover the natural tensions inherit in the music, rather than inflaming them say in the manner of a Tschaikovsky symphony finale. It seems it takes the wisdom of a veteran like Celi to boldly do this, and the corporate genius of a fine ensemble like the MPO to trust in the conductor's instinct in that regard. In simpler terms, Celi and his gang show that Bruckner knew what he was doing, and the aural result shows that it does indeed work. Well done, all around, and the Suntory audience, appreciative almost to a fault by nature in any case, show that they heartily approve (as do i, and obviously many others who have posted their sincere appreciation above / below).

The music played in this tempo reveals the true musicality of the symphony. Conductors know that if they adopt this tempo, those mistakes are revealed. So-called great conductors hide those imperfections with an accelerated tempo, thinking that the audience won't notice. Celibidache through this LARGO tempo showed everyone that he is the most refined listener and creator of truth

It makes me sad that I can no longer experience Bruckner performances like this. Everyone is doing Bruckner nowadays, but none are truly exceptional. Symphonies like these demand a superlative understanding, one that only the conductors of the past had. I can only experience this performance through a pair of headphones... Maybe rather than investing in concert tickets, I need to invest in a good pair of headphones! Still, Maestro Celi can make me cry on that climax - without fail - even through my cheap headset.

Great conductors and performers of genius like Celibidache can bring even more depth and meaning to music of which their very own composers were not aware when the piece was written. Case in point: Rachmaninoff said that Horowitz plays his music better than Rachmaninoff himself. Celibidache takes Bruckner into a space unknown even to Bruckner himself. Once a composer releases a piece of music it is no longer his!

I personally miss here insanity in the 3rd movement - feeling u r on the edge , smth. you feel listening to Mahler. I also think 4th could've been more impetous ( after all it's very Wagner-like music), here it's too "gentle" .And in general -not enough contrast between divinity of first two and insanity of last two movements.

@@robert72744 With your last statement I totally agree. But Celibidache, always trying to be as close as possible to what he thought to be the composers intention, didn't think that way, and how much the "spaces" or "depths" of Bruckner and Celibidache converged you can't possibly know. Rachmaninoffs statement, I think, rather referred to the fact that only perfect mastery of the instrument (although Rachmaninoff himself was a virtuoso) opens up all possibilities of interpretation. And as far as I know, it was Horowitz who told this story.

This symphony is well represented on video. This one, Jochum, and Abbado with Lucerne ( the last time he conducted I believe ) I love them all! They are all great for similar and different reasons. If I had to pick one it would be Abbado. There is a real sense of occasion, and watching the music play over the maestros face is beautiful and poignant. Celebidache is probably the most complete realization of both the composers and conductors wishes.

Many will take exception at the extreme slowness of the Adagio, but I believe it is as close to perfection as one can get. Would Bruckner himself have taken it so slow and would he approve? Great conductors and performers of genius like Celibidache can bring even more depth and meaning to music of which their very own composers were not aware when the piece was written. Case in point: Rachmaninoff said that Horowitz plays his music better than Rachmaninoff himself. I believe Celibidache takes Bruckner into a space unknown even to Bruckner himself. Once a composer releases a piece of music it is no longer belongs to him!
