You are so wrong about MGS4, you didn't need to be a fanboy to love it. When I played it back in 2008, the last time I had played an MGS game was in 2001, despite this, MGS4 still turned out to be my favorite game of all time(and it still is). I also fully understood the story, despite my limited experience with the series(at the time).
SwinnyUK I think they were more saying that it's so much better if you are a big fan. I only played two and part of three before playing it and it gave me such strong emotions, a strong connection that only a great game can give you. But when I was playing it, I was kicking myself for not playing the others first because I knew 100% that it would be such an amazing way to end off the series. (And this was playing the game at the end of last year) Then there is Five which looks awesome.

aragorn100000 I agree to some extent considering the gameplay is clunky and poor. But I feel like the characters and writing alone was enough for me personally, I just cared for those characters more so than any other game I'd played previously . And It had a lasting affect on me. But that's the awesome thing about gaming. There's so many amazing games it's super tough to chose a top 5 :)

I DID play the mario games all the way back when SNES was the newest platform, as well as original PS1 games and all (spyro fuck yeah), but it was easier for me to appreciate MORE elements of games that came later as I wasn't a small simple kid anymore at that point.
The Mass Effect Trilogy. In my opinion it is a masterpiece. While all three games have their flaws, when taken as a whole it was the best gaming experience of the previous generation. The incredible sound, the characters, the mature themes explored, the emotional setups and payoffs, the varied mechanics of exploring the open world and the intimate corridors, the tempo, and the entire mise-en-scène is just phenomenal.

Fallout 1 & 2 are just absolute masterpieces of story and RPG design. Mass Effect trilogy is video game comfort food to me. It's got tons of problems but I just love the story, characters and world so much that I can't stop playing it. System Shock 2 has my favorite level design and sound design ever. Max Payne is the best linear shooter ever created. Deadly premonition is the craziest, worst game I've played that's also one of the most memorable, addicting and engrossing experiences I've ever had with a game. Once again, it's more on the comfort food side. It may not be the greatest game but I can just play through it again whenever I'm feeling down and just have a fantastic time.

aragorn100000 I agree to some extent considering the gameplay is clunky and poor. But I feel like the characters and writing alone was enough for me personally, I just cared for those characters more so than any other game I'd played previously . And It had a lasting affect on me. But that's the awesome thing about gaming. There's so many amazing games it's super tough to chose a top 5 :)

The Mass Effect Trilogy.
In my opinion it is a masterpiece. While all three games have their flaws, when taken as a whole it was the best gaming experience of the previous generation.
The incredible sound, the characters, the mature themes explored, the emotional setups and payoffs, the varied mechanics of exploring the open world and the intimate corridors, the tempo, and the entire mise-en-scène is just phenomenal.

I wanted to have a variety of games in my list. Fallout 1 & 2 are just absolute masterpieces of story and RPG design. Mass Effect trilogy is video game comfort food to me. It's got tons of problems but I just love the story, characters and world so much that I can't stop playing it. System Shock 2 has my favorite level design and sound design ever. Max Payne is the best linear shooter ever created. Deadly premonition is the craziest, worst game I've played that's also one of the most memorable, addicting and engrossing experiences I've ever had with a game. Once again, it's more on the comfort food side. It may not be the greatest game but I can just play through it again whenever I'm feeling down and just have a fantastic time.
