I was a Zelda hater, had never played any of the 3D ones. And Breath of the Wild was BY FAR my game of the year. This argument of "if it wasn't a Zelda game people wouldn't love that much" from Andrea and a few others is just absurd to me.
This. There can't be a straightfaced nostalgia argument for a game that throws out the Zelda gameplay formula that's been firmly in place since ALttP. The long time fans that don't like BotW don't like it because it changes so much of the game. Andrea should know better. What nostalgia is there for the Ubisoft open world formula? If anything, BotW is the most like the original NES Zelda, but with 30 years of gameplay evolution there to flesh it out and then further expand upon what Western developers have done with open world games since AC came out 10 years ago.
I actually agree with her 100%. Being famacom, genises, pc and the all PS player I have never played Zelda. After it got such high praise and also mario I got myself a switch (which I love and carry it everywhere). Zelda is a master class in gameplay that it blows my mind to the depth the developers went and then make it work so seem less on a tablet like console but the story is so lacking it won’t be even in my top 5. In Mario I accept simple narrative as it’s a cute fun platformer but in 2017 I expect adventure games to have its hooks with a story and not be the same as Mario “the princess is trapped and you got to save her”. Horizon had me hooked from beginning and made me want to know everything about its world due to which it’s my only platinum. Whereas with Zelda every interesting side quest had the same old shrine all I wanted was that maybe you learn about that monk and why that shrines add to that part of the world but it was just all the same. I don’t understand why it’s being rated as a complete perfect games when it’s story and cringy dialogues should definitely cut it down few points.
Carson Smith Story is fine. But most people that beat the game and go back for another play through skip the cut scenes. What does it matter if the story is amazing if the gameplay isn't that fun? Games should be remembered for great gameplay first then story.
The real argument is that, like it or not, they tried to put story into the game and evidently failed on that aspect. Regardless of why you play the game, and as good as the level design is, you have to take it all into consideration

I can't stand "if BoTW wasn't a Zelda game, it wouldn't be so highly regarded". I have heard this comment so many times and it couldn't be further from the truth for me. I was completely captivated by Zelda and enjoyed it immensely having never played a Zelda game before. It could have been Random Hero X with different enemies and story and I would have loved it just the same. It's fantastic game design and being a Zelda game has nothing to do with it's critical acclaim.

Hey Andrea, you talked about how you think games like Zelda can be propped up by their name and legacy, but don't you think the opposite can be true too? I think Lost Legacy (and probably Andromeda) were actually hurt a lot because of their franchise name. On their own merits, they're decent if not great games, but everyone has such lofty expectations and can be more harshly judged because of that. Just tossing that out there...
She also said that her game of the year for 2018 was God of War, yet I didn't hear any reservations about that game getting overhyped due to the franchise's legacy. Very strange.

I cannot disagree harder, a bunch of friends never played or cared about zelda but they still loved BOTW, and i heard alot of people say the same. What you can say is that it won’t be as popular, it won’t pull people in or it wont create a bias, but you cant just say it wont be in top 10 lists, because it would still be a big game published and made by talented and respected people that would still give people the same sense of wonder and freedom. Honestly, im now sure that it would still be in GOTY lists because it would be a surprise hit (botw wasnt a surprise).

I personally feel it is a dismissive way of talking about game that she clearly did not enjoy as much as other people. It would be like me saying "If it wasn't Uncharted, nobody would've put uncharted 4 on their top 10 lists," I did not like Uncharted 4 but i don't go around telling people that they have nostalgia glasses.
I think BOTW would have gotten even more praise from people if it wasn't a Zelda game. Granted all the cool shit like the Hylian shield and Dark link wouldn't be in the game but still.
I'm so confused by this, I haven't been more attached to a single player game since Bioshock Infinite. Odyssey might be my favorite game since Super Mario 64.
Odyssey felt like work to me. I beat it and occasionally go back to try to get to darker side. Botw was so much more fun for me, if we are comparing the two. But even then I prefer games with a great narrative like horizon or even prey.
It would be less annoying if Andrea just came out and said she hates Nintendo. Narrative in a Mario game? Like Greg put it, gameplay is king. Stop reaching for reasons to downplay it's critical praise.
But I don't hate Nintendo! I've been a Nintendo fan my whole life. Just like I'm hard on games likes Destiny 2 and ME: Andromeda for not being the best version they can be, I can also be critical of Nintendo for not being the best they can be. That said, both Odyssey and BoTW were excellent games! Just not my favorite, nor the best game, of 2017. Which is OK, we're allowed to have different opinions ;)
Andrea Rene counter argument: If a game isn't trying to have a some feature, why criticize it for not having that feature? Cuphead isn't supposed to have a story, it's supposed to be challenging and rewarding with a 1930s artstyle, but if we criticize it for its story, that's not what the game is prioritizing.

I just finished Xenoblade this past week and I'm glad people are giving it some love. Idk if it makes my top 3, but top 10 for sure. I'm almost at 100 hours in, working on post game stuff. Outside of BotW, it's the game I clocked the most hours in this year.
I have this new tactic to try to dismiss people's opinions of games with high scores that are part of a series that I don't enjoy. I will just accuse them of having nostalgia glasses examples "Botw is only getting top 10 because it a zelda game," "Uncharted 4 is only getting top 10 because it is an uncharted game." If you don't like a game then you do not like but don't try rationalize your feelings by trying question other ppl's lists/feelings about the game.

I'm on Route C of Nier. I like the story a lot, but I find the combat to be pretty disappointing. The early goings of Route A without the fast travel sucks, and the first half of B is too much like A (fast travel issues included). The environments are also really bland, and all the invisible walls suck. I think most of that could be chalked up to a combo of too much ambition and too small of a budget. Hopefully Yoko Taro will have a bigger budget for his next project. Nier is a very unique and funky game, and I'm glad I picked it up.
I only played three games released in 2017. Horizon Zero Dawn (by far the best) Rime and Uncharted the Lost Legacy. Lost Legacy was solid 7.5-8/10. Rime was actually fairly decent with a decent story considering there was no dialogue. The puzzles were far too easy though. The first part of the game was the best part, but far too short.
idk, this was my first Zelda and i was completely blown away on how massive the freaking world is, i think that is kinda disrepectful to say "yeah if it wasnt zelda it wouldnt be here". Like, it doesnt make sense? we can say that about every single franchise in the market.
I'm so sick of people saying that if BOTW was not a Zelda game people wouldn't care about it. I am of the opinion that BOTW would have gotten ten times the amount of praise if it was not a Zelda game. I want to know if any of these people shitting on BOTW found dark link or at the very least a dragon. Hell Tarrey Town or Eventide Island. Tell me as someone who has put two hundred hours into BOTW what your gripes are because i think people are just hating on the game because it's a Zelda game and they're just trying to find every gripe they can with it.
Desi Gamer I found dark link. I really enjoyed the game but the world just felt like a barren wasteland a lot of time and the story was pretty much nonexistent

I agree with Tim & Greg about gameplay being king. I won't always pay attention to a story, no matter how involved or deep it may be. I want to enjoy playing it, and for it to feel good to play through regardless of story.
Tim has some balls saying that he "gets" Nier: Automata when he's only played 4 hours....I'm sure fans of it won't drag him through the mud or anything lol
I think it's a little silly for him to complain about lack of enemy diversity when he played so little of it, but otherwise it sounds like he gave it a fair shake. Nier was my GOTY and maybe my favorite of all time, but if a game's not for you, it's not for you.

I'm super glad he mentioned NieR, because it is an incredible game that KF really didn't have time to give enough love (understandably), but yeah, 4 hours in NieR is really too bad if you like it but didn't invest any more time in it.

I am 100% a die-hard PlayStation fanboy and I have to disagree with Andrea about Breath of the Wild. I played through horizon and instantly called it my personal game of the year and had no expectations of anything knocking it off that pedestal. Played through Breath of the Wild towards the latter half of the year and oh boy was I wrong. Hands down GotY. And the comment about 'if not it being a Zelda game no one would have it on their game of the year list' I feel is completely and utterly incorrect. The level of detail and polish that went into BotW is truly on another level for games and as a new Zelda fan it's very easy to see all of it. This wasn't a traditional Zelda game anyway so the lack of the property would've made the game even more noteworthy for being such a marvel in technical and artistic significance to the landscape of gaming as a whole

Andrea is wrong about Zelda, imo. BOTW is the least Zelda-like of Zelda games. From the world, gameplay, and story (or lack there of). To me, that speaks to how wonderful the game truly is. I feel like this is almost a completely new series, and I (and many new switch owners) cannot wait to see what they do next.
If your playing Nier Automata and you just stop at the first playthrough and 2nd playthrough your still in the tutorial level. You HAVE to finish all 5 main endings to get the most out of this beautiful game. Pleasee if you call yourself a gamer give yourself the time in your life!! For fuk sake just play it
I couldn't get through so much as one playthrough. 20 hours and I was done wandering a bland overworld fighting enemies that looked like trash cans. Hearing people say you have to play the game more than once to appreciate it is like hearing someone tell you that 'Ulysses' gets really good around page 500. No, just no.
Why would you ever talk about story in a MARIO game..... those games are about gameplay it’s why they all stand the test of time. It’s like watching Indiana Jones and being upset that there isn’t a deeper meaning to the story.
That Zelda comment hurt a bit lol. Lots of my friends who never played Zelda have come to me and told me it's the best game they've ever played. Had a friend go on a rant about how he imagined a game like this as a kid and never got it due to the lack of technology (more on Nintendo's part obviously). That game IS the game that got me 100% back into gaming. I look at it as no less than that. I'm not really one for open world games, I enjoy them a lot, but they usually lose me along the way. That was one of the few that gripped me until the end AND after which is ridiculous. I can't even beat Horizon still and I'd argue the game succeeds in many of the ways Zelda does.

joeynoelle I get why people don't like Mementos. I ended up kinda frustrated with it as well. Especially considering that you had to beat the entirety of Mementos to complete the game. But I kinda liked it's busywork nature and would just listen to podcasts while grinding.

Man, I really, really wish I liked Horizon more than I do. I bought it at launch because it looked cool, and the reviews were favorable, and enjoyed it for like 4 hours before Zelda came out and dominated my life for 97 hours, and then by the time I started thinking I'd get back to Horizon, Persona came out and I got stuck in for another 100 hours. Then I just got caught up in all a lot of other games that came out, like Pyre, Nier, Nioh, Yakuza 0, Super Mario Odyssey, and AC:O, and now that I've had time to get them out of my system, I find that I can't really get into Horizon like I thought I would be able to. It's not bad, but on a scale of 1-10, it only comes in at an 8 for me in a year of 11s and 12s. I don't know, maybe I'll like it more when the story really starts going, but it's really hard for me to enjoy exploring open worlds(and I had this problem with AC:O, but to a lesser extent because I love history) after Zelda just came around and let me climb EVERYTHING. Now when I come to an invisible wall or a sloped cliff that I can't get up, I get a little disappointed. Also, and this is absolutely a problem for me but probably not for other people, while I can definitely say that Horizon is beautiful, something about the lighting and visuals kind of makes my eyes glaze over, and I don't know what that's about. It's just really hard for me to see in that game during sunset and sunrise. I don't want to say Horizon is overrated until I've given it's story more time to stretch, but I'm probably about 8 hours in(doing sidequests and crafting) and it just hasn't really grabbed me.
In no particular order, here are my top 10. Assassin's Creed Origins, Evil Within 2, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Zelda: BOTW, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, Super Mario Odyssey, Battle Chaser: Nightwar, Batman: The Enemy Within, Golf Story. Tim's top 10 was very good imo. On the same note though, Andreas comments on cuphead made me lose all respect for her, not having much to begin with with her consistently negative outlook on anything that doesn't "check all the boxes." No, not every game needs a story you agree with to be good so quit it with that push. Having assassins creed on your list explains it all. On a side note, Tim, please play Hollow Knight when it comes to the Switch soon. It was such an amazing game on PC and was my game of the year.

I’m not saying it was perfect or didn’t have any flaws, but I still loved it. The negativity around it got kind of ridiculous and I just don’t understand it completely. No, I put it higher because it had an amazing combination of art, sound design, level design, combat, and narrative. Did it also have an amazing lead character? Yes! But that isn't why it wins for me.

I think for 2018, I'd prefer to hear everyone's Top 5 only. By the end of this episode, so many games are mentioned that I feel as though it's no longer a celebration and discussion about the best games of the year because a majority of the year's biggest hitters have been mentioned in some way. Top 5's seem more weighty and really make you consider why you like a game so much. Still a great ep though; keep it up :)

I mean, to be fair though, there HAVE been Mario games with good stories, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door in particular, but I would agree that the platformer Mario games don't really need a story if the gameplay is good enough. I mean, I prefer the first SMG because I think it has a stronger narrative pull than the second one, but I'll easily admit that SMG2 is a better game to actually play.

I honestly cannot believe anyone would say that Smash isn't a fighting game. It's apart of the FGC. Two versions of it are literally ESports. I've never heard this, and I am super surprised.

I think Lost Legacy (and probably Andromeda) were actually hurt a lot because of their franchise name. On their own merits, they're decent if not great games, but everyone has such lofty expectations and can be more harshly judged because of that. Just tossing that out there...
She also said that her game of the year for 2018 was God of War, yet I didn't hear any reservations about that game getting overhyped due to the franchise's legacy. Very strange.

I cannot disagree harder, a bunch of friends never played or cared about zelda but they still loved BOTW, and i heard alot of people say the same. What you can say is that it won’t be as popular, it won’t pull people in or it wont create a bias, but you cant just say it wont be in top 10 lists, because it would still be a big game published and made by talented and respected people that would still give people the same sense of wonder and freedom. Honestly, im now sure that it would still be in GOTY lists because it would be a surprise hit (botw wasnt a surprise).

I personally feel it is a dismissive way of talking about game that she clearly did not enjoy as much as other people. It would be like me saying "If it wasn't Uncharted, nobody would've put uncharted 4 on their top 10 lists," I did not like Uncharted 4 but i don't go around telling people that they have nostalgia glasses.
I think BOTW would have gotten even more praise from people if it wasn't a Zelda game. Granted all the cool shit like the Hylian shield and Dark link wouldn't be in the game but still.

I'm so confused by this, I haven't been more attached to a single player game since Bioshock Infinite. Odyssey might be my favorite game since Super Mario 64.
Odyssey felt like work to me. I beat it and occasionally go back to try to get to darker side.
Botw was so much more fun for me, if we are comparing the two. But even then I prefer games with a great narrative like horizon or even prey.

But I don't hate Nintendo! I've been a Nintendo fan my whole life. Just like I'm hard on games likes Destiny 2 and ME: Andromeda for not being the best version they can be, I can also be critical of Nintendo for not being the best they can be. That said, both Odyssey and BoTW were excellent games! Just not my favorite, nor the best game, of 2017. Which is OK, we're allowed to have different opinions ;)
Andrea Rene counter argument: If a game isn't trying to have a some feature, why criticize it for not having that feature? Cuphead isn't supposed to have a story, it's supposed to be challenging and rewarding with a 1930s artstyle, but if we criticize it for its story, that's not what the game is prioritizing.

I actually agree with her 100%. Being famacom, genises, pc and the all PS player I have never played Zelda. After it got such high praise and also mario I got myself a switch (which I love and carry it everywhere). Zelda is a master class in gameplay that it blows my mind to the depth the developers went and then make it work so seem less on a tablet like console but the story is so lacking it won’t be even in my top 5. In Mario I accept simple narrative as it’s a cute fun platformer but in 2017 I expect adventure games to have its hooks with a story and not be the same as Mario “the princess is trapped and you got to save her”.
Horizon had me hooked from beginning and made me want to know everything about its world due to which it’s my only platinum. Whereas with Zelda every interesting side quest had the same old shrine all I wanted was that maybe you learn about that monk and why that shrines add to that part of the world but it was just all the same. I don’t understand why it’s being rated as a complete perfect games when it’s story and cringy dialogues should definitely cut it down few points.
I can see why Nick wants Andy fired, but my god; his humor and presence just reinvigorates my soul. Plus all of his interactions when Geoff was there were ACE 😂

I just finished Xenoblade this past week and I'm glad people are giving it some love. Idk if it makes my top 3, but top 10 for sure. I'm almost at 100 hours in, working on post game stuff. Outside of BotW, it's the game I clocked the most hours in this year.
I have this new tactic to try to dismiss people's opinions of games with high scores that are part of a series that I don't enjoy. I will just accuse them of having nostalgia glasses examples "Botw is only getting top 10 because it a zelda game," "Uncharted 4 is only getting top 10 because it is an uncharted game." If you don't like a game then you do not like but don't try rationalize your feelings by trying question other ppl's lists/feelings about the game.

I'm on Route C of Nier. I like the story a lot, but I find the combat to be pretty disappointing. The early goings of Route A without the fast travel sucks, and the first half of B is too much like A (fast travel issues included). The environments are also really bland, and all the invisible walls suck. I think most of that could be chalked up to a combo of too much ambition and too small of a budget. Hopefully Yoko Taro will have a bigger budget for his next project. Nier is a very unique and funky game, and I'm glad I picked it up.
I only played three games released in 2017. Horizon Zero Dawn (by far the best) Rime and Uncharted the Lost Legacy. Lost Legacy was solid 7.5-8/10. Rime was actually fairly decent with a decent story considering there was no dialogue. The puzzles were far too easy though. The first part of the game was the best part, but far too short.

I am 100% a die-hard PlayStation fanboy and I have to disagree with Andrea about Breath of the Wild. I played through horizon and instantly called it my personal game of the year and had no expectations of anything knocking it off that pedestal. Played through Breath of the Wild towards the latter half of the year and oh boy was I wrong. Hands down GotY. And the comment about 'if not it being a Zelda game no one would have it on their game of the year list' I feel is completely and utterly incorrect. The level of detail and polish that went into BotW is truly on another level for games and as a new Zelda fan it's very easy to see all of it. This wasn't a traditional Zelda game anyway so the lack of the property would've made the game even more noteworthy for being such a marvel in technical and artistic significance to the landscape of gaming as a whole

BOTW is the least Zelda-like of Zelda games. From the world, gameplay, and story (or lack there of). To me, that speaks to how wonderful the game truly is. I feel like this is almost a completely new series, and I (and many new switch owners) cannot wait to see what they do next.
If your playing Nier Automata and you just stop at the first playthrough and 2nd playthrough your still in the tutorial level. You HAVE to finish all 5 main endings to get the most out of this beautiful game. Pleasee if you call yourself a gamer give yourself the time in your life!! For fuk sake just play it
That game is way to overhyped, the gameplay was outright awful and the story was generic and boring
I couldn't get through so much as one playthrough. 20 hours and I was done wandering a bland overworld fighting enemies that looked like trash cans. Hearing people say you have to play the game more than once to appreciate it is like hearing someone tell you that 'Ulysses' gets really good around page 500. No, just no.

Why would you ever talk about story in a MARIO game..... those games are about gameplay it’s why they all stand the test of time. It’s like watching Indiana Jones and being upset that there isn’t a deeper meaning to the story.
That Zelda comment hurt a bit lol. Lots of my friends who never played Zelda have come to me and told me it's the best game they've ever played. Had a friend go on a rant about how he imagined a game like this as a kid and never got it due to the lack of technology (more on Nintendo's part obviously).
That game IS the game that got me 100% back into gaming. I look at it as no less than that. I'm not really one for open world games, I enjoy them a lot, but they usually lose me along the way. That was one of the few that gripped me until the end AND after which is ridiculous. I can't even beat Horizon still and I'd argue the game succeeds in many of the ways Zelda does.

Man, I really, really wish I liked Horizon more than I do. I bought it at launch because it looked cool, and the reviews were favorable, and enjoyed it for like 4 hours before Zelda came out and dominated my life for 97 hours, and then by the time I started thinking I'd get back to Horizon, Persona came out and I got stuck in for another 100 hours. Then I just got caught up in all a lot of other games that came out, like Pyre, Nier, Nioh, Yakuza 0, Super Mario Odyssey, and AC:O, and now that I've had time to get them out of my system, I find that I can't really get into Horizon like I thought I would be able to. It's not bad, but on a scale of 1-10, it only comes in at an 8 for me in a year of 11s and 12s.
I don't know, maybe I'll like it more when the story really starts going, but it's really hard for me to enjoy exploring open worlds(and I had this problem with AC:O, but to a lesser extent because I love history) after Zelda just came around and let me climb EVERYTHING. Now when I come to an invisible wall or a sloped cliff that I can't get up, I get a little disappointed. Also, and this is absolutely a problem for me but probably not for other people, while I can definitely say that Horizon is beautiful, something about the lighting and visuals kind of makes my eyes glaze over, and I don't know what that's about. It's just really hard for me to see in that game during sunset and sunrise.
I don't want to say Horizon is overrated until I've given it's story more time to stretch, but I'm probably about 8 hours in(doing sidequests and crafting) and it just hasn't really grabbed me.

Tim's top 10 was very good imo. On the same note though, Andreas comments on cuphead made me lose all respect for her, not having much to begin with with her consistently negative outlook on anything that doesn't "check all the boxes." No, not every game needs a story you agree with to be good so quit it with that push. Having assassins creed on your list explains it all.
On a side note, Tim, please play Hollow Knight when it comes to the Switch soon. It was such an amazing game on PC and was my game of the year.

I mean, to be fair though, there HAVE been Mario games with good stories, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door in particular, but I would agree that the platformer Mario games don't really need a story if the gameplay is good enough. I mean, I prefer the first SMG because I think it has a stronger narrative pull than the second one, but I'll easily admit that SMG2 is a better game to actually play.
SherlockHyde just something to note, Nintendo didn't develop the paper Mario games, intelligent systems did.

I honestly cannot believe anyone would say that Smash isn't a fighting game. It's apart of the FGC. Two versions of it are literally ESports. I've never heard this, and I am super surprised.
It's absolutely criminal that Nier wasn't higher up on the lists. If Andy had actually beaten the game I'm sure it would have been higher. This game belongs in the GOTY conversation with Zelda, Mario, Horizon etc.
Resident evil 7 in VR was my GOTY.
