*“I figure if you’re gonna have an origin story, you might as well make it multiple choice”.*
    The Joker, The Killing Joke
The best part is that in the end you actually have no idea how much of what happened in the movie ACTUALLY happened. The whole movie could’ve just been a fantasy in Arthur’s head. It’s the part that this movie took as inspiration from The Killing Joke graphic novel when Joker says to Batman after we see his “origin story”. It’s why I almost wish we didn’t get a sequel because it could ruin the mystique of this movie.

The film is set in the 80’s an era where anyone could walk into any venue with a weapon even concealed and not have a problem with it. It wasn’t until the late 90’s and early 2000s that security really stepped up with Columbine and 9/11 occurring.

The only way this works as canon -it's a tale Joker is telling the psychologist in the end. It's a masterful tale, but the person in the tale, Arthur, isn't a masterful anything. Arthur's no criminal mastermind, he couldn't plot his way out of a wet paper sack.

Phoenix is absolutely AMAZING in this film! After Heath Ledger's version, I thought, nobody can do a better Joker than that! I still love The Dark Knight, but the darkness of Phoenix's version is next level! The story/writing is amazing too! I can't wait to see "Joker - Folie a' Deux"

BOTH were perfect for the movies they starred in. Ledger Joker would have been way too over the top for this movie but was perfection in The Dark Knight. He had to be able to fight Batman from the start.
Joaquin's Joker slowly losing his mind fit this movie perfectly, but would have been a terrible version in The Dark Knight.
As I said, I don't think either actor could have been better, hence each getting an Oscar. Jmho

I remember seeing this in cinemas, and I was just blown away by it. Not like Murray when he “got what he f**king deserved!”. 37:17
I thought it was the most realistic depiction of Joker, how a broken man goes from being looked down upon by others until he embraces his dark side and becomes a symbol of chaos and everyone finally appreciates him. It’s like the old proverb, “A child who is not embraced by their village will burn it down to feel its warmth”. The music in this really haunting yet amazing. And I’d say without a doubt that Phoenix is the best Joker since Heath Ledger, rest in peace.

    • @nimz8521

It's a solid movie, but it doesn't work as a Joker movie. First off, you can't have Batman and the Joker be 50 years apart in age. Secondly, this Arthur Fleck isn't a criminal mastermind, he's barely a mind. He only gets away from regular beat cops due to plot armor. If you had this version of Joker against Batman it would be a 5 minute movie of a millionaire beating up a mentally handicapped person.

The Joker has never had a definitive backstory. In Batman 1989 and Batman: The Animated Series (revealed in the Mask of the Phantasm movie), The Joker's backstory is that he was a mob enforcer. In The Dark Knight, he tells two different stories about how he got his scars. I think Joker's speech from Alan Moore's The Killing Joke best sums up The Joker's backstory across all mediums and iterations: "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" - Joker.

The Joker is one of only 3 movie characters (and the only comic book based one) where multiple actors have won Oscars for playing it (Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix both won for playing this character).
The other 2 characters to achieve this feat are Vito Corleone (with both Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro winning for THE GODFATHER and THE GODFATHER PART II respectively) and Anita (with Rita Moreno and Ariana DeBose winning for the 1961 and 2021 versions of WEST SIDE STORY)

While the story doesn't cleave particularly close to DC Comics Canon. It does borrow certain elements and themes from the comics. Joker's origins even in the comics aren't really set in stone, he's even been quoted to say. "If I'm going to have a tragic backstory it might as well be multiple choice." This may have influenced Ledger's Joker where he kept asking "Do you wanna know how I got these scars." giving a different story every-time. But this one I feel follows beats from The Killing Joke by Alan Moore (who also wrote Watchmen and V for Vendetta). In that story the origin of the Joker comes down to "one bad day" that's all that's separating us from our descent into madness. The dream of being a stand-up comedian is definitely taken right from The Killing Joke. Arthur Fleck ends up having a bad day which sets him down the path to becoming Joker.

I personally prefer the 1989 Jack Napier Joker origin, he was born a psychotic gangster and just got worse after the chemical bath. Like the Red Skull with the Super Soldier Serum in Captain America: The First Avenger, good becomes great while bad becomes worse. Tho, if I could give Joker an original name before he's Joker, I would call him Joe Kerwalski.

I wouldn’t recommend viewing Joker (3019) as canonical takes on these characters because so much has been removed to fit them into a "realistic world." Instead of adapting the DC universe to live-action, they’ve adapted it to our reality. In most renditions, the Joker is only about 5 to 10 years older than Batman. Bruce leaves Gotham around the age of 18 to travel the world and train, returning at 25 to become The Batman during his first year. So, during their initial interactions, the Joker would be between 30 and 35 at best.
Arthur in the film is around 32 or 33 years old, while Bruce appears to be about 8 to 10 years old. If Bruce is 10, that means there's still around 15 years before he becomes Batman. By then, Arthur would be close to 50. In my opinion, I don't believe Arthur is the Joker that this world's Batman will eventually face. Instead, I think someone else will take up the mantle of the Joker, inspired by Arthur's actions.

In this movie, yes. Canonically, Joker's real name has yet to be confirmed. He has aliases like Jack White/Napier, but that isn't strictly canon. The fact that his real name has truly yet to be reveal is part of his allure that makes him such an iconic character.

Don't look at these films as canon to the comics because they are very different. Joker in the comics doesn't have a real name or a true origin. That's the great thing about Joker he's just crazy. My favorite origin is from The Killing Joke I think that's the definitive Joker origin in my opinion. I highly recommend Batman: The Animated Series it's the greatest adaptation of Batman ever. As much as I love the live action versions Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill will always be my Batman and Joker.

Just a little tidbit for clairty's sake. Multiple times in the reaction you referred to "Arkham City Asylum." Its called "Arkham Asylum." Arkham City was a video game where Arkham Asylum came under new ownership and the new owner cordoned off an entire rundown section of Gotham City and turned it into an open air version of Arkham Asylum, moved all the prisoners from the Asylum into it and named this new prison "arkham city" because it was literally a small city. In real life Asylums in America had completely vanished by the early 1970s. This film takes place in 1979 so Arkham Asylum was renamed "Arkham State Hospital."

15:00 Arthur could certainly argue self-defense, but there are two things that ruin the case. First of all, Arthur has a mental disorder, he most likely would have been rejected at every FFL dealer. He is basically in possession of an illegal weapon. Second of all, the actual self-defense. Arthur would have a good argument of self-defense against the first two "bullies." Chasing down the last fleeing man when his life is no longer in danger? Yeah no, that would immediately ruin his case.

This is one of several Joker origin stories, and this one was inspired by a line between Joker and Batman in which joker warned him that he was "Just one bad day away from being me."
This film was meant to give us a look at the bad day that could have created The Joker. The animated film Killing Joke also covers it, but the first half of it is pretty much filler.

That’s a neat detail I hadn’t noticed either, that he dances after every kill.
I don’t know why people are poo pooing this as a possible backstory for the Joker. He was just stumbling around in the beginning and happened through reinforcement to tap into something. That perfectly mirrors the start of being a stand up comedian, all you do is bomb for the first year or two, you find a hundred different ways NOT to tell a joke, until you find a way that works for you.
Once Arthur was off his meds you saw that it some ways it helped him think clearer as he developed his entrance and plan to delete himself on TV.
But unfortunately for Murray he committed the one unpardonable sin that Arthur hates, making fun of him was bad, but what really set him off is Murray didn’t listen to him, he kept trying to put words in his mouth. So he turned the gun on him instead.
“You get what you ****’n deserve” indeed. Too often society will solve a problem and then the balance of power will shift and the other side will say “this problem is fixed, why are we still spending money on it.” So they slash funding and SURPRISE the problem comes back.
For example, child hunger was basically eliminated in the 1970s after both parties were shocked by documentaries in 1968. But then Reagan and the new conservatives of the 80’s slashed the programs that funded school lunches and it has returned as a problem ever since. Penny smart and pound foolish.

It CAN'T be canon. The age difference between Arthur and Bruce Wayne would have them fighting when Arthur was in his 60's. Also would there BE a Batman? In usual continuity Bruce's parents are killed by a mugger, here they're killed by a mob angry at the rich. Where would his motivation to fight crime come from? Sure, murder is a crime but the murderers motivations were not criminal. If anything an adult Bruce would "fight" the middle class.

His last joke to Murray. "What do get when cross a mentally ill loaner with a society that abandons him and treats him like trash? I'll tell you what you get. You get what you f**king deserve."
Now having seen his parents killed right in front of him in an alley full of trash Bruce Wayne has become a mentally ill loaner who must feel like he's been abandoned. Because of the Joker's movement he is going to get what he f**king deserves, The Batman. The Joker has made himself the eventual literal punchline to the running gag that is The Batman vs. Joker, and it's a joke that he started. Oops. 🤡

The ending scene with Joker moving down the hallway with That's Life playing was so perfect. The ending felt so optimistic, because Arthur finally felt free with himself, and yet dark at the same time, because the Joker had been born.

I like this movie a lot, but I am glad it ISN'T canon to any particular batman. It's very much it's own thing. The performance is fantastic, but I don't really see Joker in it. But that's a me thing. Also, this Joker will be in his mid 60s when Batman comes into it. He's way to old for how old Bruce is. As a stand alone, that's perfectly fine. Once you make it "canon", it's a problem. Joker is older than Batman... usually, but not 40 years older.

I know you got your tastes and plenty to do for your viewers, but if you ever liked the characters, peep DCU's animated features. So many awesome batman stories that aren't really for the kids. They legit have the best batman movie in a two part feature called The Dark Knight Returns (Nolan used as the inspiration for his grounded approach), but there are many cool options to peep to see how the characters are, INCLUDING, a flash paradox feature where you see a world where Thomas Wayne survived and Bruce died as a child in that alleyway (the flash movie completely ruined it with their ideas plucked from it).

The charm of Joker is he has no definitive origin story. Interesting fact, the part of the brain that controls memory also controls imagination. It's possible that Joker has reimagined his own history so many times that not even he really knows how he got to be the way he is. He can no longer tell the difference between what actually happened and what he just pretended happened. I believe this movie is Joker, yet again, reimagining his origin so that it coincides with Batman's origin. Deep down, I'm pretty sure he knows Bruce Wayne is Batman. Moreso, he understands that Batman is Bruce Wayne. The idea that he inspired the guy that murdered his parents legit makes him laugh. That's the joke he's laughing at in the end. When the therapist asks him to tell her the joke, she doesn't know who Batman is, therefore......she wouldn't get it.

I absolutely love this movie but I refuse to watch the second one. I just think it's a cash grab. This movie works perfectly as a stand alone film, exploring mental illness, putting a beloved DC villain in a real life setting and exploring what it takes to make a villain. I love the fact that save for a couple of cameos, Batman/ Bruce Wayne isn't a major part of this film, that Joker can be born and exist without Batman. And it avoids being a big nostalgia film of repeatedly going, look, it's the Penguin, Look its the Riddler, look its Commissioner Gordon, Look it's the Justice League. It includes just enough to tell Jokers story without relying too much on the rest of Gothams lore. And for these reasons, I do not want a sequel. I fear it will loose its purpose. We saw how Joker came to be, now it's just expanding on an already complete story and risks falling into the trap of introducing other villains and setting up Batman and loosing sight of Joker. I've maintained ever since Joker first released, that if there were to be some sort of follow up movie, they should take the same basic idea and apply it to other villains. In particular, I'd love to see Lex Luthor. Lex is driven by ego and narcissism. He wants to be the most intelligent, powerful and influential person in the world and he loses any chance of being that when Superman shows up in Metropolis. So I think they could make a great realistic film, delving into ego driven obsession by setting him up to be a billionaire genius who is beloved by everyone and is the biggest celebrity in the world, but when he hears news of an alien on earth, he sabotages himself by doing villainous things in order to defeat the alien. And just to keep it as grounded as possible and to show how petty his obsession is, Superman should never be seen except from grainy pictures from afar on the front of newspapers or TV headlines, showing just how far away and disconnected Lex is from Superman and yet he feels nothing but anger, hatred and jealousy despite not really knowing the Man of Steel. We can see Lex's popularity decline because he becomes less likable, more destructive and more psychotic, meanwhile he thinks his decline in popularity is because of Superman. I also have an Idea for Reverse Flash in which it explores obsession again, but this time it's the obsession of idolisation in which Eowbard Thawn wants to become the Flash rather than kill him. In each of these ideas, the core of the films would be mental illness and what it takes to make a villain. That's what I think this series of films should have been about. Not just riding the gravy train of Joker hype and making a direct sequel to a film that doesn't need sequels

Joker definitely deserved the 11 Academy Award nominations it received. I don't understand how it didn't win almost all of them. Joaquin Phoenix gave what is among the best acting performances I've ever seen. That it's not the "official" origin story for the Joker is completely irrelevant. As a matter of fact, it's probably impossible for there to ever be an origin story.

This movie gives you the Joker through 'batmans eyes' and why you see the mercy he shows instead of killing. It's not to be 'above them' it's because he IS them. You see the victim he sees when he hunts them down through Gotham. He may lose it and go over the top, but in the end he's seeing himself in certain characters like the Joker.
Just doesn't work for me without Batman though. Felt too 'glorify the serial killer' energy. Also, really strange how in the plot every woman of color he comes across "fails him" in some way. Marc Bernadin pointed this out in his review and it was a very odd happenstance (he said he doubted it was intentional, just the way the story played out post casting). Couldn't unsee it the second watch.
I do think Gotham should always feel lost between the 70's and 2000's regardless of who is directing the live action films. Just feels right.

however I am a little upset about the sequel to Joker being a musical and they are going to do about 15 songs but knowing Joaquin Phoenix no matter what it is he's going to make it good so I'm going to watch it regardless of it being a musical and having Lady Gaga in it😅 she's not the worst actress but I have seen better but again she's paired up with one of the greatest actors of all time so it should be good but again a musical a little weird but definitely up Joker's alley

You're too innocent in believing that Thomas Wayne wants to help the city just because he said so on TV. At the time when this movie came out people in media were nervous. I think they realized that too many people in America can relate to Arthur and his suffering. I think they feared the riot as seen in the movie becoming a reality. The situation in America has only gotten worse we'll have to see if there is a similar concern among the media elite again. I agree with you, this SHOULD be the Joker's origin story as it is so powerful.

Hello Mary! I haven’t finished watching your reaction but I just always comment this on the reactions to this movie. I was diagnosed with Psuedobublar affect or PBA or if you like, the Joker disorder as it is the same disorder that he has. Mine is nowhere near as severe and it includes bouts of random sadness so it often gets misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder. I have a hard time telling people sometimes because they either don’t believe me and assume that I’m just being an edgelord or they are afraid of me. Like I said it’s not as severe and I only take one medication for it. It can be difficult to deal with but not impossible. I work, I live, I function, I have a wonderful partner and have a good relationship with my family and friends. I also have anxiety and that makes it difficult too. All in all I’m proud of where I am today and who I am. Much love!

    Pleasant Sunday Mary
If you have a 'bad memory', will you be able to remember most of this film by the time you watch "Joker: Folie à Deux"? Hope you rewatch on your own 24 hrs before watching the sequel.))
There have been several different 'Jokers' in the Batman universe. All having different names. This is just another version of the 'Joker' origin story. In this film, Arthur's laughter is a mixed up, involuntary reaction to stressful, uncomfortable, or negatively emotional situations. Since he is such an unhappy person with little joy, his laughter is in placement for crying, screaming, or behaving rudely (raging). Psychologically, his emotional mind responds in a more 'socially acceptable, non-threatening manner.
The 'Murray' character is based more on the "Johnny Carson Show".
Don't know how Todd Phillips will introduce Haley Quinn, but in comic book cannon, Harley was originally a inmate psychologist that make 'Joker' her project. Yet, she ends up falling in love with him. It is later revealed that she has her own set of traumas that leads to her own 'psychosis. Anyways.... Have a great week!!

I would be careful to try and find reason within things that dont have any. Is there really any justification to apply violence to others because of your suffering? Even the train bullies, its not self defence if you shoot people in the back as they are fleeing, its revenge at best and that is illegal. I understand the frustration of injustice, but applying injustice to others does not counter, in fact it adds to the injustice. You are not required to side or feel pity for Arthur, yes he is being mistreated, so are millions others.
I think the main thing I could get behind this movie is the idea that what if everyone that felt justified to apply violence as payback decided to do this all at once? Then you get the ending and THAT is imho the take away from this movie.
