Thanks for the video! Unfortunately may be facing similar issue with '89 560SL... Quick question for you, when you were repairing the interior portion, did you have the entire engine removed? Sorry if silly question, just couldn't tell entirely...

Just the radiator was removed, unfortunately the entire lower radiator mount was rusted away, so I had to fabricate the bottom of that and weld back in once the chassis leg was done. For a really neat repair removing the engine might help, but you can kind of work around it.

@@classiced1416 Thanks for the quick reply, Ed! That's good news. I had it in today to a guy I trust - he's a great restorer / fabricator, but not really an old Benz expert, so his concern is access (I was referencing your video!). I have almost same exact passenger side issue you had (truly same spot), and at least on the 560, in addition to the radiator, the ABS controller / pump, plus alternator and A/C compressor kind of encroach the work area, which my guy understandably doesn't really want to mess with. So to do what you did, it may involve having someone else strip that stuff out, towing it to him, and then towing back to reassemble. He said alternatively (my rust I don't think goes back as far as yours did) he could sand blast, weld a piece to the outside, and spray / fill all inside... This obviously would be a lot easier / cheaper, and he said would probably last a while... Would love to hear your thoughts!

@@timothydee9390 yeah so mine being an 1980 and no aircon, there isn’t really much in the cavity above the leg thankfully. Cars with ABS though I know tend to get water collecting under the pump so I would at least take that out so you have a proper look underneath.
Unless you are worried about originality I think the approach you guy suggests might be OK…certainly mine won’t be perfect, the critical thing is to make sure the water can still drain out from under the ABS pump area and out via the drain in the seam with the inner wing seam. The issue is normally caused by water pooling on top of the leg and working it’s way inside the leg or just rotting out the seam.
