Bought a 4Runner from auction with a rusted out frame for dirt cheap (didn't know the frame was shot). In my case, the frame is beyond saving. I can push my finger through weak spots all over. But, I purchased a used frame that only had some rust in the same spot this one did. So doing about the same thing here to save that other frame. Sad when you see a frame like this one and go "that's in pretty good shape!"

  • @MissusDoge

Just curious, but why not cut the really rusted sections of steel out of the original frame (or at least treat the rust) before welding a steel plate over it? Wouldn't that rust continue to get worse over time, eventually eating through the welds as well?

    • @AutoRepairTips757

We used the same thickness metal, and we lost footage showing what we used for rust proofing. We used PPG DP On the inside and outside of the frame, that is some amazing stuff we sprayed metal years ago and threw it in a bucket of water for 30 days and it never even showed any signs of rust starting that is great stuff. It almost puts like a vinyl coating on the metal.

Ive done alot of rust repairs, first thing i do is cut out all the existing rust. Then i would clean inside the frame and since its a big hole in it spray some eastwood chassis paint in the hole it has a lomg hose you can spray up in the frame everywhere in boxes frames afer yiu clean it and dry it. Then id make the plate and weld it in then id make another plate to weld down onto the lca mount for more strength then after im done tgat id soray si e more eastwood inside frame and paint the outside with por15 chassis black spray paint. Leaving rust there is really a good way to just keeo everything rusting away on the inside of the frame.

I've used a ton of rust converter over the past 5 to 10 years in an attempt to stop the rust but at some point I'm going to have to cut it out of that area. As I've watched a few vids on this subject, it's a good idea to get all the crap that is laying in the frame holding moisture or your just going to rust through even faster.

this is very interesting and indeed an easy solution but i only have one concern, when you weld this new piece on, how do you know that the structural load will now go through that?
do you just continue to let the rusted piece support until it gives out, and since the new welded piece is there, it'll instantly take over?

Im looking to do this with an 2011 Accord, shes way to good to go yet. Would there be any benefit from removing all signs of corrosion underneath and coating/treating before welding on the plate? Im guessing air can flow through the subframe and continue the corrosion.

I knew I wasn’t an idiot for doing this minus adding the undercoat and fiberglass that’s what I plan to do soon but I had a rust hole developing so a buddy of mine and I took some heavy ass steel, use a piece of cardboard and measured it, then we put it onto the frame and we blended it in somewhat. Believe it or not, some dude scammed me and claimed he undercoated my truck professionally but all he literally did was spray paint it black and my frame ended up having a hole in it 9 months later smh

I'm not a professional, but why did you cut that patch out of the middle of the steel sheet? And, it's a frame. You made it look nice in the end, but the real problem was not removing the rust-compromised area, thus creating layers of metal.
