I have a GX9 for what I call leisure photography. When I just want to walk around or when I do mountain bike and take picture occasionaly.
GX9 has incredibly good IQ. I am impressed when I look back at the pictures on my computer. I love it for this and also for the light weight.
Using a GX80 for street photography you become unnoticed especially if you use the flip screen with the camera at waist level. I currently use the GX80 but mine has some issues. Sticky shutter button and failed rear dial although the switch part of the dial for exposure compensation still works. The hiss on video from the built in mike/preamp rivals Niagara falls making it mostly unusable for serious video. Image quality with the 24-65 kit lens is fantastic sharp and colours and black & white are excellent. A personal issue is the 4/3 ratio I prefer 3/2. In camera 3/2 reduces mpex to 14 which is a bit low for croping.
Totally agree with you. I've had a G85 (great camera) and currently have a G9 and GX9. The GX9 is my preferred camera for travel street photography. Some streets suit the 15/1.7 while others suit the 25/1.4. I particularly like the 25/1.4's rendering in low light but the 15/1.7 is no slouch, either. At home, I shoot almost every weekend with an X100V due to its even more compact size, greater DR and better noise handling. But when I switched back to the GX9 for a week of street shooting in Mexico City, I didn't really miss the X100V. In fact, being able to switch between 15 and 25 was very useful. A key feature that made the GX9 a great street camera (vs my GX7 and G85) is the presence of the minimum shutter speed setting. And while the GX9's single point AF is very quick and reliable, I find that I get more reliable results by using zone focusing (f/8 at about 8ft and 1/500 sec min shutter speed).
I've had an Olympus in the past but found its start up time to be too slow, plus the power switch was on the left side so I couldn't smoothly power it on while raising the camera.
Nice one - Yeah that's a great little street kit - GX9, 15mm and the 25mm :) Yes minimum shutter speed is important feature :) Thanks for sharing man, very interesting stuff :)
I had the gx85 and G9 (great Camera but too big for a MFT). Now I got the GX9 and I love it. Also got a FF Nikon Z6II and a Ricoh GR3. Different cameras for different needs 😀 You’re close to 4000 followers- keep up the good work!
Thank You :)
Thanks! And when you pair the cameras with your recommendations for jpeg shooting, it’s a great combo for fun shooting and quick, minor post processing to print workflow.
Hey :) Wow - thank you so much :) Very much appreciated :) Grant
Useful info.👍
I'd like to pick up one of the prime lenses you mention for my lumix G3. I currently just have the kit 14-42 zoom lens on it.😊
Revisiting my old Lumix G6 with a 25mm f1.7 - that nifty fifty look! :)
I love my GX9 and I love my Pana-Leica 25mm f1.4. I’m saving for the 15mm f1.7. Good luck with the eBay alert. I hope get another one. You’ll never let it go again.
Yes - I’d like to get one again :) and the 15mm f1.7 - I’d love to try out the 25mm f1.4 too :)
I used to have a G85, it pulled double duty for 'serious' work like portraits/light wildlife/video as well as being just small enough that it seemed acceptable for street photography...
Still I felt weird just capturing casual moments with family at a restaurant or my kids at a birthday party... Like I felt peoples eyes on me because of the 'professional' appearance of the camera.
Fast forward to now: I have upgraded to a G9, and found a gx1 for casual stuff.
I got a Japanese language GX1 last month on ebay in like new condition with 2 batteries for just $80... And then I used a utility called p-tool by a dev called 'personal-view' to make it run English firmware!
I don't believe there is a more cost effective way to enjoy street photography/birthdays/a light kit for little trips/restaurant photos (with the 16mp sensor).
Pairs great with my 20 mil.
A little bulky with my 12-35, but versatile.
Becomes a tiny tele setup with the ever-sharp (but slow) 45-175.
So fun!
That’s awesome man :) Thanks for sharing, interesting stuff RE: GX1 :) cool
Nice video, I have 2x GX85s, G7, G95 and even the lowly ZS60 which I also use for street photos because I just can't afford an LX10 or LX100Mii right now, since I have two GX85s, all great cameras.
Great camera line-up :)
would you recommend the gx85 to a beginner photographer?
@Pealios yes, absolutely. An awesome camera with great features and very affordable compared to new models. Also consider the G7 or EM10MII.
@@patrickmcfadden1689 thanks for your input. i’m trying to get into the hobby and i hear people recommend so many different cameras, it’s a bit overwhelming/confusing.
I have the GX8 and the GX9 for street. Both ace cameras.. Down side is the 9 doesn’t come with the much needed flippy screen, and the 8 doesn’t have minimum af shutter speed in menu. If only Lumix added the flippy screen to the gx9, that then would be the ultimate for me.🙂👍
How about the Panasonic LX-10? It's an older point-and-shoot, but I believe it is still being made. Unlike the LX-100 II, it has a tilt screen.
Currently using GH5 and Leica 15mm. Love it but the camera is not discreet enough for me - I am so shy. I really want to get the GX9 for street photography because of the size and the vertical flip screen. I think i can mask my street photography really well with the vertical screen.
Old school - LUMIX GM5 with LUMIX 20mm f1.7. Smallest MFT with EVF. PERFECF FOR STREET.
nice :)
Great videos. I am sure you have areason for what you do, but is it me or is your monitor/iMac kinda high? Seems like that could bother your neck. 😊
It's a stand up desk - I'm just sitting down for the video
If using my lumix then G80 with the 15 or 25 that you talked about for the GX9. But most of the time my urban kit is my pen F
With the Olympus 12 and 17 mm if I feel I need something a bit longer will use my 25mm f1.4. I am looking at on ebay a gx80 but it is an infrared converted camera so maybe not so much for street photos but you never know.
Awesome :)
I love the Lumix GX9 my cousin has a plug and sold me the GX9 for $400 brand new with the kit len
Awesome stuff :)
Hello Tom Hardy, nice video 🙋
Yeah - lol :) I get that a lot
I recommend the 20mp LUMIX cameras do to the newer picture profiles. Those monochrome profiles are amazing. The gx9 is amazing and the g95 and g9. Looking to get back into m43 might just do g95 for its size
Yes, I think your correct the 20mp Lumix cameras are good for the updated picture profiles :)
I am getting interested in this system especially for those nice small lenses. I am bit confused by these cameras and what are the actual differences between a GX8, Gx85, GX9 etc. These there are cheaper GM1 GX800.
just progressive upgrades :)
