Hello hello, I hope you enjoyed the video and the thoughts on this little gem I wanted to share AND the lovely Ghibli clouds I was treated to by the weather :o
Also much love to Squarespace again for sponsoring the video! Head to www.squarespace.com/teocrawford to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code "TEOCRAWFORD".
    Have a great week,
    Teo
P.S I've noticed that the price for this camera seems to vary quite a lot across the globe. For reference, I often find this camera body in the 400€ range, which in my eyes is a good deal - I hope that clarifies a couple questions :)

You were a big part of me deciding to get this exact set-up and I never regretted it. Such a special combo. And it clearly inspires you because your photos with it are some of your best work imo.
The big companies don't want people to know it but no, you don't need the latest gear to enjoy photography. In the contrary I would say.
I have been shooting with a Nikon D60 and a 35mm 1.8 and I don't even know how old it is but if I didn't like cameras as much as I like ohitography I could very well just shoot with this combo or the GX80/20mm1.7 and be perfectly happy.
Btw, if you use lightroom I highly encourage you to use the new denoise funstion. It's ofc not perfect but it makes photos that would have been unusable at high iso completely clean and even printable.
There is no more excuse now to not use old gear (if you use lightroom).

Everything about this video is how i've been feeling for a long time.
After many years and many test trials with digicams and even the x100 i finally found the camera sparks that joy and gives me that ease of use and burden-less feeling. I found a deal on the "old" sony rx1rii and that camera has completely resparked my love for photography.
I use to shoot a lot with point and shoot film cameras, i would use them as my everyday carry whether i was going out with friends/family or on my commute to work, i would always make sure it would come with me. i would even make room for it in my camera bag on trips or my paid gigs. current film prices had got me looking more into digital point and shoots and long story short i ended up with the rx1rii and now my bigger sony has taken the back seat.
its so nice to come across video that really goes into depth explaining that feeling ive been personally experiencing. this has definitely become one of my favorite videos here on youtube that ive watched in a long time, i couldve easily watched this video front to back 10+ times even if it was hours long. so yeah thank you for that :)

I'd like to point out that in the last decade or so progress on the digital camera front wasn't made by such huge leaps as it was earlier, meaning a person trying out photography can rely on older second hand models to cover 90% of their needs. Sure higher MP and ISO numbers are great but even having a camera that gives you usable 800ISO is just lovely. And I'd really like to be a guy starting out in this era. Congrats on making it so easy to understand for everyone!

There is absolutely nothing terrible about the Panasonic GX85. It's a superb little camera, capable of taking beautiful images with fairly inexpensive lenses. It's small, inconspicuous, light and can be stashed in a bag or large jacket pocket when necessary. The mechanical shutter has a very soft but crisp sound, and it has the option for an electronic shutter, too. In body stabilization, 4k video, lovely colours, what's not to like?

You were partly what inspired me to get a GX85! Love your photos and how you can turn something seemingly mundane into something beautiful. Been a photographer for going on 10 years and was a micro four thirds guy for a while and sold everything for full frame when I started leaning heavier into video. I realized very quickly I didn't like the weight of the bodies or lenses when going on personal trips or for EDC. Also found out there was nothing "magical" or "unobtainable" with full frame. Yes shallow dof, blah blah; but a photo is so much more than blurry background. So I decided to go back to this exact setup, GX85+20mm f1.7. I told myself I would by a 12mm or a 15mm at some point but I absolutely love the 20mm, it never comes off. I still have my full frame Panasonic cameras for work but when it's just me and I want something light to throw in my pocket or a small sling pouch, it's the GX85 that comes with me.

That’s strange, because I can usually find it for about 400🤔 I didn’t think that the price could vary so strongly depending on your location.
And 400 is really cheap for a camera with the capabilities of the GX80. You‘re not going to find a bloody camera that’s any good for 80 bucks. But the cameras that camera manufacturers try to sell us nowadays are in the 1000-2000 bucks range, so considering that, 400 is a steal! That is the point I‘m trying to make here🙌🏼✨

Sure 600$ bei itself is a lot HOWEVER not when it comes to cameras. It’s not really out of touch when you consider that good cameras can cost multiple thousands of dollars. I‘d say anything under 800 is considerable as a „cheap“ camera. Anything under 400 is a „budget“ camera. It’s the same way cheap Pianos are 800$ and that is just the way it is. You can not expect high quality in that price range but it’s enough. Nothing out of touch with that. It alway depends on what it is about.

That's right, it's all about feelings. That's why the Leica M is the king of this class. Since it is too expensive and not affordable for most people, I bought the GX9, which is a slight upgrade to the GX80. It has a slightly better dynamic range and a 20 megapixel sensor. Since I got this camera, my full frame camera has been put away in the closet. :))

I have it paired with the 25mm 1.4 PanaLeica lens and its one of my most favorite combos out of all the cameras/lenses I've owned and it made shooting photos fun again. Also the 16MP isn't an issue for large prints since Lightroom has an AI upscaler and all large photos I printed from the files of this camera came out stunning. I'm glad to see this camera getting more recognition and it saved my back from traveling with Full Frame cameras like my S1H. Thanks for all your work

I feel validated. The camera I've become attached to is a couple of years older than yours-it's a Pentax K-S1. I think it might be the most compact DSLR that Pentax produced, and just slightly bigger than your Lumix. It puts out 20MP, which is more than enough for anything I do, and it's a great match with those tiny Pentax-DA Limited series lenses. To me the key advantage is its bright-and-beautiful pentaprism viewfinder. It's much more pleasing to use than a typical EVF, especially on sunny days.

Use the gear you have. Purchase primes if and when you need them. YT videos will help you become a better photographer. Books, as in how to or of images by photographers you like , will help you become a better photographer. Going to workshops or taking classes are also helpful. Your gear, especially your body, is the least import element of becoming a good photographer. The most important piece of gear you will ever have is about six inches behind your camera.

With regards to your point on the super high ISO capability at 9:59; that high ISO isn't really useful for single shots, but if you're stacking shots using median blending in post, then you can get the benefits of higher shutter speed in low light while keeping low noise. It's the same technique many smartphones use to achieve such low noise in their night modes.

This ties in perfectly with the intuitive 'active filter' hypothesis, it is many times easier to learn things when you are enjoying it than when you aren't. If you want to get good at 'active' art like drawing or painting, you will get better if you actually do what you like since you will pay attention to what you are doing and do it more. Same with language learning and photography, which are more 'passive', pay attention and do it often and you will get results.

small quick digital cameras are so special. My first camera was a Fujifilm FinepixS2750 that I got as a hand me down when my grandparent's house burnt down. I'm not kidding my first camera survived a house fire. it's got 12 mega pixels and is from 2010 I think, considering when I recharge the batteries I have to reset the date and it automatically assumes 2010. Apart from the way I got it I don't know who used it before or what it was used to capture, I wish I did know though tbh I was never that close to my grandparent's on that side of the family, I'm glad I can give this little camera some new life though even if it is just to shoot candid photos with my friends. It's not the best camera for size/weight but I never leave the house without it, it just feels so special when I hold it.

Not only 50MP, but Fuji just released their 100MP medium format camera: GFX 100 II. That is insane and around $7500.
I agree with all your points and will add that higher image quality does not mean better photos! Shoot what you like and with what works for you!
Thank you for keeping me inspired to shoot both digital and analoge! Love your videos.

Use the right tool for the right job.
It is crazy having 100mg. If you are doing landscape or crop the heck out of things this may be the right tool for you. I can’t imagine schlepping this large and heavy camera all day taking pictures. In the studio it’s a whole different game.
For me, as a street photographer, the GX 85 is a perfect tool. i’m glad Fuji has made a GFX 100S II for those who need or want it. That isn’t me different folks different strokes.

Man thank you for repping this camera. It's actually the ultimate travel camera. The video features are quite good and with the stabilisation and use of a camera strap you can totally get nice smooth-moving shots with it. I have it and a Canon M50, I never pick up the m50. The features are better, the lenses are better, the system is cheaper and the files are just as sharp because there's no AA filter. This is despite the m50 having a 24-megapixel sensor.

I feel the same about the gx80. I don't know what it is, but this camera inspires me to go out and take pictures. It's about the process of taking them and capture memories...and not about pixels and perfection. I always loved the idea of dealing with limitations. I would love to upgrade to the gx9 for the exposure compensation dial... because the rear dial on my gx80 has stopped working. And it's my 2nd one because of this. 😅

A year ago I bought the Sony c7 full frame camera paired with the sigma 24-70mm 2.8f lens. I kid you not, going back to my GX85/80, I forgot how much fun it was to take pictures. I stand by it, the gx80/85 paired with the 42,5 mm 1.7 is amazing. It’s light, you don’t feel any pressure taking pictures and is fun. The only negative side might be the autofocus. I was also suprised that I had to increase the shutter speed of my Sony because it had no lens stabilisation, even though it has IBIS. Almost all Panasonic lenses have OIS. In conclusion I learned that m43 is everything but a compromise.

The gx85 is one the best desiged cameras ever made. The weight and size is almost perfect. If the gx85 had newer senor it would be my favourite camera. Only thing I don't like is the aspect ratio of 4:3 so I set it to 3:2 which of course means you are cropping the sensor a bit. I have found using the enhance feature on lightroom helps improve the files

absolutely stunning video. I dont even need a camera, I watched this for the visuals and the commentary. How you feel about the GX85 is how I feel about the Leica M9 or the xpro1--it's inspiring to grab and walk around. I completely agree that most new digital cameras are completely unnecessary--huge, bulky, 50mp +, spray and pray--there is nothing that motivates you to challenge yourself to be more creative: the paradox of ease.

I have had the GX85 for several years. I love it and the GX9.
I do street photography and this body does the job. Small and light as you suggest. So are the lenses. Not Ricoh GRiii/X small but easy to put in a jacket pocket. Features I love. IBIS. With some lenses there is dual image stabilization. This makes the video nice and smooth. Also low light is easier to do. L monochrome D is my favorite jpeg setting for any camera. I like it more than Fuji’s Acros with red filter. The contrast and crushing the blacks makes me happy. Not unique to this manufacturer or model, I love the touch screen where I can touch to focus and then activate the shutter. Very helpful for street photography.
As this is a mirrorless camera it consumes a lot of energy. The battery is good for 300-400 images. Good enough. I carry one or two spares and that is all I need for a day of shooting. As this is a Panasonic camera there is no surprise this body produces very nice video. The only downside of this body is the lack of an audio jack. Don’t do video? Please disregard this last comment.
Panasonic and Olympus (M43 is the only mount that will use their competitor’s lenses) have a vast selection of lenses at different focal lengths, brightness, and price. The primes are absolutely tiny and light. I am satisfied with the quality of the images that I make with this body.
M43 does what I need. I also use Fuji gear. There are no benefits, for me, to use a full frame sensor. YMMV. Here is a great feature of the Lumix GX85. It is cheap! I’ve seen body only offers in the $350 range. You can put a 25mm lens (50mm full frame equivalent) on this thing and you are making images for less than $500.
The GX85/9 doesn’t have phase detection. Panasonic doggedly stuck with contrast detection for focus and developed DFD. It is quite good for photography. Video is another matter. Focus isn’t very sticky. For the video clips I do it is OK. Not so good for longer videos or blogging.
Small. Light. Performant. Inexpensive. This is an excellent body for a good price. The 20mp GX9 can be had for a couple hundred dollars more. I recommend either of these bodies because I use them both. I can’t wait for the GX10 with improved features that research and time promise.

Hello teo! I bought lumix gx80 around two years ago after i watched your video and i still use it until today! I have canon r5 too for professional use. But turned out that i use gx80 more this year!! I was wondering is it just me or this camera is indeed so comfortable, i just searched on youtube about this gx80 worth in 2023. And a lot of people still like it very much!! So i guess this camera is indeed a great one!! Thank you for helped me choose this camera teo!!! Have a wonderful shot!

There are so many cameras. There aren’t any bad cameras. So we have to select the right tool for the right job. I’m not a professional photographer. Can you use this camera for professional work? Certainly. Professional photographers usually use full frame sensor camera for professional work though.
I look at the GX85 output. I look at its features. I look at this camera’s size and weight. I look at the price. It is, as Teo says, fun to use. I really like this camera for the reasons mentioned. I’m glad I made this purchase.

The more you do street photography the more confident you will become. You have good tools. Watch some of the many good street photography TH-cam videos and look at street photography books from the library. You’ll do fine.
Just returned from a week walking the streets of NYC. Took a small amount of street photos. I am surprised I took mostly street portraits. I don’t know why. They were there and I took them.
I love Saul Leiter. He did color street images in the 60’s and 70’s when color wasn’t cool. I have learned to incorporate negative space in my images due to him. What I really like is taking portraits of people with umbrellas. The last day in NYC it rained and the umbrellas came out. I also took puddle reflection images. While taking these images, I asked myself what would Saul do? He took pictures of umbrellas without the people. I decided to do some of that also. Even an old dog can learn new tricks.
Have fun with your street to David. You are good enough. Your images are good enough. you will not die if someone refuses to have their image taken. Just smile and continue walking away.

I completely agree with the point you're making. Though, I'm most often rocking my a7rIV, which is a quite 'hefty' camera - especially for everyday shooting. But the way I've resolved the issue of carrying it around is by getting a really comfortable and light sling bag to to carry it in. Which has in turn brought back lot's of joy to the shooting process :)

I agree with so much you said in this video! I have the same viewpoint. I wish more cameras had 16-20 megapixels again. 35mm film is the equivalent to 19 megapixels. I relate all of my digital cameras to my film cameras. I'm currently looking to upgrade my camera. I'm using my first, an old old old Canon DSLR with a failing sensor, and I've had it 7 years. I'm ready for a mirrorless camera that will be a good partner to my film SLR camera.

I think I would have to disagree on the billboard statement. When the iPhone 6 (i think) came out, they had an ad campaign where they shot actual billboards with it and it was just fine. It was also 15MP. The bigger something is, the farther the appropriate viewing distance is to it. So, if you have a 12MP or 16MP camera, you can do most things perfectly fine with it. The only time it might be negative is when you're viewing them to purposely pick out poor quality. I'd argue, if you told somebody who wasn't a photographer that this was a "professional" camera they wouldn't disagree. It's all about how you look at things.
