  • I woodturned this simple bowl from a log hoping to work on my beginner lathe skills. I really focused on getting a decent finish with my carbide tools. There's still a lot of room for improvement (tool marks!), but it was a fun quick project. Thanks again to @MillerMade for sending me this log! My tools:
    Resin: amzn.to/2nUhFPg
    Finishing Oil: amzn.to/2oAFPP6
    Center Finder: amzn.to/2ld06Ju
    Jet Lathe: amzn.to/2NSotba
    Carbide Chisels: amzn.to/2NUiEdq
    Nova Chuck: amzn.to/32tJvkm
    Face Shield: amzn.to/2Ac4Cvj
    Respirator: amzn.to/2N7mxfm
    Miter Saw: amzn.to/2ZpjuBW
    Drill: amzn.to/2XtnW0G
    Square: amzn.to/2VaCNzW
    Clamps: amzn.to/2UvPSiZ
*if you shop through these links I may receive a small commission from Amazon. The price is the same for you, but it helps support me and I really appreciate it!

It's amazing how the imperfections you don't notice in person really stand out on video...

You mean like used screws and a worn screw tip? That was painful.

The turning was very well done though. I might have to look at that carbide scraper for myself, you seem to really rely on that one.

I have to admit I couldn't make eye contact with my wife for a couple hours after watching you lay the wax to that bowl. First time watching your videos, now I'm a subscriber. Watching you create that bowl from firewood is mesmerizing.

Thats a piece of birch(not sure what specific species) out of the mountains in West Virginia. The other one is black walnut from here in Kentucky. Glad to see you are putting them to good use. Looks good my friend.

think of putting a mortise on the bottom of your work to increase the depth of the piece and you don't have to cut if off your chuck and finish it. I might have left some of the bark, natural edge type, but it turned out nicely.

    Hello,
Good work!! Do you shoot dry or green wood? If it's green wood, how do you make sure your bowl does not warp or crack?
Do you only work with carbide inserts or HSS too? Are you satisfied with your 3M Dual Cartridge Respirator Assembly? Thank you

    • @CookWoodworks
      @CookWoodworks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I use both types of wood. For green wood I usually shape it rough and let it warp, and then reshape it once it's dried a bit. In one video I used my microwave to speed it up! I've only used carbide so far, and I've loved them. And I'm very happy with that respirator, especially when I use resin. Thanks for watching!
