- Here I turn a log into a ball vase. Maybe the wall thickness could have been a bit thinner, but I'm still quite satisfied with the result.

That's the "Paul Howard Sphere Jig".

It looks like a Carter Perfect sphere jig to make the ball!
It's the Paul Howard sphere jig, but they are pretty similar.
Really REALLY nice work. I recently got a lathe and was wondering how you dry a full log without it cracking Ive just had logs siting around. 4/5 turns failed due to major cracking so far. Not even epoxy can fix that. Is there a way without waiting 2 years for drying since I don’t have 2% of my life to wait for that log to dry 😅.
Thank you. Well, drying a log with a large diameter without it starting to crack is almost impossible I would say. The best way to process a fresh log would be to cut it up and turn the pieces immediately. Vases have to be pretty thin, otherwise they will still start to crack overtime while drying. Bowls could either be turned thin or just rough turned. I usually seal the entire rough turned bows with anchorseal and it them dry for several months before finishing it.

Thanks for sharing this! I’m new to turning, what rpm would you recommend for a project like this?
For round and balanced pieces I usually set the speed of my lathe to somewhere between 500-1000 rpm, depending on the diameter. As long as the tools are sharp, the finish is pretty good, even with lower speeds. When roughing an uneven log, the speed is even lower to make sure the lathe doesn't jump around in the workshop. For this project I would guess, that I probably never went above 800 rpm.
At the beginning I would just start out pretty slow. With time and experience you'll also get a feeling for the right speed.

Hi there, I just found your site. You do amazing work. How long you been turning? Everyone else is asking about equip. You use so I guess I’ll follow suit. Interested to know if the hollowing tool you used in this video is shop made or purchased. If you made it I was wondering if you would shoot me a close-up of the tip. Looks like something that would improve my hollowing(anything would). What size is the carbide tip? Again, I’m looking at all your videos. Don’t know why I haven’t run across your site til now. Great project! I'm a new woodturner and am confused on something. Everything I have read says to remove the pith or the wood will crack horribly. You are not the first to leave the pith in to turn a vase or other things. What is your opinion on removing the pith prior to doing a project? How about how dry the wood needs to be?
Thank you and sorry for the late response. It really depends on what exactly you want to turn and the kind of wood you use. When turning thin vases or bowls and immediately finishing them, it usually isn't a problem to not remove the pith. Most of the time when I turn bowls, I just prepare a rough turned bowl blank, cover the end grain parts with anchorseal and let it dry for a few months, before I come back to finish it. In this case, as the blanks are still pretty thick, I prefer to remove the pith to reduce the chance of cracking.
I just got a lathe for Christmas, been trying to get the feel for it but are there any tips you would give to a beginner ?
Tips for a beginner:
First and most important, always wear a faceshield, getting hit in the face by a piece of wood isn't a pleasure.
Be careful with learning from youtube videos! Because there is, besides a lot of great videos, also a lot of crap on this platform. Taking a woodturning course would be the best to get an idea of how to use the most common tools.
Start with easy projects like candle holders, little trees, mushrooms. Do not buy every tool you think you need. To get started a roughing gouge, spindle gouge, bowl gouge and a parting tool should be enough. And always work with sharp tools or you will need a lot of sandpaper.

Christian Greene - my advice would be practice, practice, practice. Turn some spindles between centers, turn some simple bowls. It’s worth purchasing bowl blanks to get started, use nice kiln dried wood. Stay away from big hunks of green wood. Make a few simple items. Snowmen, trees, candlesticks, etc. Lowes & Home Depot have nice kiln dried 4x4x5 ft long redwood or poplar. Cheap and usually knot free. Good wood to practice with. Get a sharpening stone - keep your tools sharp. Look into the Easy Woodworking Tools - carbide tips are sharp, make clean cuts.

I'm just saw this video. I'm trying to learn how to turn an uneven log. Mine is not that uneven. Is the best way just slow and patience until its even? I'm trying to turn a snowman.
Slow and patient is always a good idea, when it comes to uneven logs. Just take your time with light cuts and a sharp tool.

the ball Vase looks nice but 90% of the log went in "trash" ...
That's how woodturning works. There were two options for this log: Throw it on the pile with firewood or put it on the lathe to create a decorative object. I decided to take the second option. And the "90%" that fell on the floor still get used as additional litter for the cows in the barn which usually gets bought from a sawmill. So besides big chunks of bark there is absolutely nothing that is going into the trash.
