Woodturning Log to Bowl with Black Walnut

  • Chain sawing on a lathe? Well, kind of... It was there, it was the right height, so I might as well use it, and the thumbnail isn't clickbait!
I use the last of my black walnut log stash, that I've been whittling away at for about 14 years or so. This log is super seasoned, and by that I mean very dry and perfectly preserved. Even as dry as it was, Black Walnut is always a pleasure to turn, yielding lots of nice shavings, and hopefully a nice result.
My email is rhumphrey.woodworking@gmail.com but please hold off on submitting your work to be shown, as I have some catching up to do.
    My snail mail is:
    Rod Humphrey
    PO Box 159
    Chesterfield, IN 46017
It's important for me to share with you, that Jesus Christ is my personal Savior, and the same can be said for any of you.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
    Food for thought at least.
    thanks for watching!

"Black Walnut" and "firewood" have no right appearing in the same sentence together! Glad you managed to save that beautiful resource and put it to best use. Gorgeous piece! 👍

When you said you picked the wood up 14 years ago my first thought was oh back in the 90s. Then I realised it would be back when I met my wife. Now I'm thinking about my daughter that was born a few weeks back who just turned 2. Doesn't time make a mockery of us all!
Timeless bowl there though sir, it's beautiful. I adore the look of black walnut and you did it justice.

Ther is something very comforting about a simple piece of turning. I wanted just to hold it and look at the grain. I think it is quite something it getes partially turned with just so little in the chuck. Then The interlude with work from others . Thank you for this posting.

Thanks for sharing your great wood turning projects, I learn something new with each one I watch. Living on a 5-acre natural bush property, we have tons of various Australian hardwoods in various stages-alive to dead, to choose from. Naturally I have large and small chainsaws, however, I recently bought an electric 20 Volt battery driven saw for use inside the shop, I am very impressed with its performance and battery life, I have used it outdoors to fell small trees etc. magic to just switch on/off without dislocating shoulder joints. Fantastic for indoor use. Regards from Tasmania.

Another masterpiece is born! I like your creativity with the way you slice your raw materials. I wouldn't have thought to cut the raw materials the way you did. I would have kept the "within the box" thinking, & simply sawn a round off that log, & started to shape it into a bowl. The way you prepared it made for some awesome characteristics to this piece!

Rod that turned out so beautiful! I keep telling my sister I'm gonna drive the truck home to Indiana and cut down the walnut trees in her yard for my turning projects. LOL She said come on. Also would give me one of many reasons to come home from GA, I miss my Northern Indiana home. I love walnut it is pretty. God Bless you and your family.

@@RHumphrey yep Have turned lots of Pecan no peach yet. Have some Magnolia ready to go. Pecan trees are self pruning lol have a big pile of logs on the side of the house our trees are over 80 yrs old they are huge. Just a beginner yet but I'm learning. I learn a lot from you. It is also nice to hear that mid western accent reminds me of home, Mishawaka, IN. God Bless you Rob.

    Nice work as always.
My yard is full of black walnut trees. Right now is the time of year that that squirrels and chipmunks are going nuts. ,😂

Great turning as always Rod. In addition to being a woodturner I also make small items of furniture. My favourite wood is American black walnut which I buy in boards 6 feet long and measuring one inch by six. I live in the UK and one of these boards costs me about $100 so appreciate any that you come across.

Thank you my friend! Wow, that's expensive... It's so prevalent here that it isn't uncommon at all to see it used for firewood. Pretty crazy...

What a nice chunk of wood, and did I ever enjoy watching you prepare the piece. I have chunk of willow I need to resize by handsaw to fit my little 1218. Chewed away at it a bit, today, but haven't had a great way to hold awkwardly shaped pieces. TYVM for the ratchet strap idea!
I like your bowl, Ron. I really enjoy seeing your uploads resume.
