James Gunn has truly outdone himself with HBO Max's Peacemaker, and has cemented the casting of John Cena as one of comicbookland's very best. I talk about how it compares to another franchise spin off, The Book of Boba Fett, as well as DC's upcoming run of 2022 movies including Black Adam and The Flash. Oh, and poor Drax...

Cena's acting really surprised me in this show, and I really loved how much depth they gave his character; not to mention that all the conversations between characters look and feel so real. It is one of the reasons why James Gunn is one of my favorite directors; he did the same thing with _Guardians of the Galaxy_ and gave them so much emotional weight.

Learning the story behind why John Cena played Home Sweet Home in Peacemaker is legitimately heart warming. There's a truly deep, emotional, and pensive aspect to DC comics; they're not afraid to lean into darker emotions and themes whereas Marvel doesn't like to dwell on such things. DC needs only to embrace this more as they've done with their movies and shows these past couple years and their fan base will naturally grow because we can see the good work they're doing. The Batman was really good as well. We're finally seeing some good things from DC and I'm here for it

It's like when a movie is beloved for being a hard R series, then the executive producers make it PG 13 to be more appealing and it under performs and is forgotten but the original remains. You have to be willing to fully go for an idea if you want it be remembered.

    Different Take:
Not to take away from Cena's performance, but I don't believe it was a case of perfect casting, I believe it's case of the director/writer knowing *exactly* what to do with the actor he got. James Gunn absolutely knew what to do with John Cena in The Suicide Squad, which is why exactly he wanted to do a stand-alone TV Storyline with him.

Cena wasn’t even supposed to be Peacemaker it was supposed to be fellow former wwe wrestler Batista (he plays Drax), but he declined the role for Zack Synder’s Army of the Dead. I think this was a blessing in disguise as they definitely would’ve approached the role completely different and peacemaker would’ve had to be way more drastically different to separate him more from Drax. Also if you’ve ever seen Cena in wrestling and his character, he himself has become exaggerated in his bright ass t shirts and jeans shorts and his promos and you could see how he transitions from that character to peacemaker easily.

The other thing as well in terms of his physique is that, majority of the time, the "superhero build" we see in live action is purely for show. Those bodies are not actually that accurate to what strength would be. (For instance, body builders at the time of their shows are at their weakest because they're so dehydrated, etc., given their diet.) With Cena, it is different. Sure, he might've had a specific regime for the role, but that is a body that can move and actually has a lot of power because he's eating right. His career as a wrestler was for sport. That also is for show as well, but wrestlers like that *are still doing the things.* They need to have the builds for that, which applies well in a superhero context.

  • @goldcd

I think Peacemaker is the first time the lead being built like a brick-shithouse, is actually important.
Superman is, because 'he's super'. Thor is because he's a god (and a childhood flashback would have him looking like that Hercules-kid). Starlord's been to the gym, just as that's just what heroes are supposed to look like etc etc. There's no meaning explored in depth. No meaning beyond a sentence explanation.
Peacemaker on the other hand, was deliberately shown as a regular kid alongside his brother. There's a great big juxtaposition between Chris Smith (the little kid with the blandest of names) and the hyper-masculine, man-mountain, Peacemaker.
Didn't require a montage to tell you this was achieved by many years lifting weights up and then putting them down - which would have been superfluous. What we do get are all the nudges as to why he'd have done this. Then with the shots of him looking miserable on the bed, it finishes the arc. You know what he's put himself through, you have a good idea why, but it's left him as the same unhappy kid he started out as.
Batman might have trained his body, but it's the tool he uses.
Peacemaker's body is evidence of decades of misguided goals - and then *spoilers* he achieves his peace another way.

I'm in the middle of rewatching the show, and it's just as great as I remembered. I'm currently on a bit of a dc high after the flash, and I genuinely can't wait until season 2. Funny how, a year later and aquaman 2 still isn't out. I really hope it's good, I'm not a huge fan of the first and apparently earlier screenings haven't been great

"...and then the Flash. I think people are really sleeping on. I don't think it's going to erase Snyder per say. I think it's gonna be a fun movie with time travel and alternate universes and I like the casting of Ezra Miller as the Flash. I think Michael Keaton's batman is going to kill it. And I don't think it is going to be as reliant on that Disney formula of Cameos coming in at the third act a la Now Way Home."

John cena CARRIED this show. Everyone had a great performance, but John cena is more than just a great performance. It was refreshing. He demonstrated his ability to go from sad to happy to megalo.
The only complaint I have about this show is that the humor missed more often than it landed. Some jokes just kept going on and on hoping for laughter. There’s not enough soul in the comedy.

I didn’t register that peacemaker is supposed to be bisexual. I’m fine with it, but it’s a little inconsistent with some of his lines. He was having a laugh at learning Ada- the other woman was a lesbian.

Snyder's emo Superman would beg to differ. They do best when they stick with what makes each character who they are, and if Superman was more rooted in hope & compassion he'd be wearing white robes & have perforations in his hands & feet.
Modern Hollywood does better with darker heros because their cynicism doesn't show through as much as it does with "shining light" type heros

What did you think of the hinted romance between Harcourt and Peacemaker? Or do you think they will focus more on his trauma with having to kill his own dad in season 2 and that relationship wont happen/be sidetracked.
