  • After the much maligned theatrical version of 2016's Suicide Squad saw Task Force X's cinematic hopes dashed for good, here comes James Gunn with The Suicide Squad. Thoughtful title. I break down my favourite moments from Idris Elba's Bloodsport, John Cena's Peacemaker, my thoughts on Malcolm Tucker aka Peter Capaldi as the Thinker... and the film's alien contingent. I then touch on the one thing that distracted me from giving this movie a perfect score...
    The Suicide Squad directed by James Gunn. Starring Joel Kinnamen, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margo Robbie, Jai Courtney, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, John Cena, Alice Braga, Daniela Melichor.

      I finished watching "The Suicide Squad" earlier and I loved it. It's very deceptive. When you think you've figured out it's style? It proves you wrong. The humour is dark and surreal but other times it switches the mood to serious. There are some beautiful visual moments and others that take you by surprise. For instance, what had been comical takes a sadder turn.
      The cast? Everyone gets to have their space to breathe and John Cena in particular deserves credit for being damn good at comic and straight acting. Harley Quinn? She wasn't needed. They could've removed her and the film wouldn't have missed a beat. Iris? The real star of the show.

That what would be a really cool fight scene and maybe each ahs different agent I've to kill the other or as interference. Also, always got confused with Deadshot and Bloodsport since they sound similar, but would say Blood shot is deffently a top B villian or A villian before watching this movie. He is just too highly skilled with emotion.

      Same. When Bloodsport was introduced on screen I actually said "oh, so Idris is playing Will Smith in this one huh?" but Elba's portrayal made me care about the character way more than Smith's. I mean really Smith was just playing Smith - I didn't see Deadshot in there at all. He didn't really even do any interesting trick shots, he could have been one of the special forces team like Flag instead of an iconic villain and it would have made more sense, but of course he's an A-list celeb so they had to waste a named comic book character on him. Not to say I don't like Smith, he just wasn't a good fit for that role. To some extent Bloodshot was also just Elba playing Elba, but at least Elba's more brooding style fits the character much better and makes me believe in him. And he got to play with some cool gadgets AND out-shoot Peacemaker with a trick shot that was waaaay more impressive than literally anything Deadshot, the supposed master marksman of the DC world who can hit targets with his eyes closed and make multiple ricochet shots, did in the first movie.

      That first scene on the beach, where Waller tells them they can't back down even though their cover is blown and the entire army is there, and Harley's just like "Okay" and pulls out the rocket launcher and gets to work is so funny. It gives her a reason to be on the team, too. I mean, IRL we know she's on the team because she's a main character and has plot armour, but in-world she seems like nothing but a liability, but her willingness to just throw herself into situations, and her ability to make others care enough to act against their own self-interests and go along with her, makes her an actually useful addition to a team of this nature.

      @reesiuspeesiuspuffs3006 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@TheDelinear I also suspect that Waller placed Harley and Flagg on that first beach team knowing it was going to be a blood bath because she knew those two were likely the only ones that would oppose her plan to just destroy the files.
      I think she may have wanted them there because she hoped they would be killed, but she couldn't just detonate their head-bombs for no reason because then the rest of the Squad would abandon the mission.
      (This is also a side theory, but I suspect Peacemaker may have known more than he was letting on and actually knew that the camp was full of freedom fighters. Maybe Waller had them target the camp because they wouldn't be cool with covering up Starfish and their numbers needed to be thinned for her plans.)

    I feel like Gunn handled Harley’s predictable inevitable survival by putting her in the team that got massacred right up front, so the tension in her situation came with *how* she survived, rather than whether or not she would. Which made the whole romance subplot hilarious, because we knew she was really in control / along for the ride the whole time. Brilliant, A+ use of the character imho, but hey I’m just one guy on the internet so 🤷

    • @devforfun5618
      @devforfun5618 2 ปีที่แล้ว +96

      i totally agree, she is underestimated because realistically she shouldn't pose any threat and that is how she can deal with basically anything, she basically had an entire solo movie while the other characters were trying to save her, i had fun just imagining how bad her torture would fail, like, the only way someone can convince her to do anything is by threatening a child and i doubt anyone would think of that because no one expects her weakness to be empathy

    • @jamrhein2
      @jamrhein2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I want to agree but I also have trouble agreeing. She was handled well but she still didn't need to be there in the first place. And I didn't like that both times she survived for literally no reason other than nobody shot her. It just felt forced to me that she was being kept alive. Everyone was massacred but they stopped shooting to take her. Why? She just killed the president of the country, an entire army walks in...nobody shoots her and they take her again....why?? For me the whole romance thing was just too random and misplaced. It's the only part of the movie I didn't enjoy.

And the few seconds later he is trynna be his father. Maybe it's just him, regardless of caring, having a sliver of humanity decency to not see her daughter in prison. Maybe he wants to be better, or good but the prison life and the time with his father wiped that off. He litterally has no ability to be good until maybe the time with the team and the chance to do smth for his daughter is a shot at redemption, a shot for trying. I think if Harley is part of the Suicide Squad, it should show the effects of being a survivor in a Suicide Squad. She's an A-lister surrounded by expendable D-listers who she keeps growing attachments with them and watching them die horrible deaths while she keep miraculously surviving, rinse and repeat. She gets a legendary status among all the teams she works with and she hates it almost as much as Joker. Eventually she goes rouge against Waller, gets Batman or someone smart to remove the bomb from her head and the plot of the next Suicide Squad film is the newest Squad being ordered to hunt her down.

      I thought Superman was going to save the day too! It would have been a neat ironic twist to show how hard the Suicide Squad worked for the win only for a supe to fly in and finish the job with barely any effort. Ultimately I'm glad they found a plausible way to defeat Starro on their own terms though. If Harley had just stabbed it in the eye and it died, it would have felt super cheap, but Harley just making an opening for the rats to do the work - well, it worked for me. Kind of sad to see Starro die after how well they portrayed it, but I guess it's hard to make into a repeat character (and if they ever DO need another Starro, well space is a big place).

      I knew Bloodsport had to be the one to stop Peacemaker from killing Ratcatcher II because of the bus scene, but I felt kind of bad for Harley that Peacemaker killed Flag and she wasn't involved in any of those scenes. I mean, I know IRL it's not healthy to exact revenge, but in the movie it feels like it would have been pretty standard for Harley to mete out some justice to Peacemaker (maybe with Bloodsport wounding him and Harley finishing the job). Instead of Harley showing us how much that hurt, we just had a scene where she told us it made her sad. It's a minor thing in the grand scheme but it's probably the biggest misstep in the movie for me.

    I totally agree about the expendability. The combination of making Rick Flagg, Nanaweh and especially Ratcatcher 2 SO loveable with that “nobody’s safe” attitude made it such an emotional and intense cinematic experience. When Peacemaker was pointing a gun at Ratcatcher I was on the edge of my seat!!!
    Also can I just say I love all the epic set up. The Javelin, the rats over Bloodsport, the tiny bullet, the mother, the golf club made for SO many satisfying moments.
    Also Peacemaker was so interesting. The fact he has a show meant nobody was expecting A. Him as an antagonist at the end (I feel a Loki style redemption arc soon) and B. His death (not really I know)

      in my mind it made total sense in hindsight, before the movie was out the redundancy of having bloodsport and peacemaker in the same movie was weird, then waller calls attention to it again by pointing out how similar they were, so the treason makes total sense, she put bloodsport as the leader because she knew the team would follow him, but put peacemaker to deal with him because he would do what had to be done

After all, he's been studying Starro for decades but doesn't seem to have done much with the research - he mentions that he is working on a human controlling tech like Ratcatcher's rat controlling tech, presumably based on the Starro drones, but we don't see any evidence of it. I feel like the Thinker was maybe once a smart guy who was basically then used by the ruling family as nothing more than an executioner, and he got lazy and complacent in his role, never really needing to be smart because all he had to do was torture enemies of the state and he'd have a job for life.

The suicide squad are literally just a bunch of criminals forced to do the government's dirty work but at the end, they were made out to be heroes and they were cheered on. Even though the first film was terrible, they at least felt like villains. It annoyed me when the person knocked Waller out cause that's when they were treated like heroes. Both the suicide squad and Waller are supposed to be villains, there isn't really a hero in the situation.

    SPOILERS:
    The Suicide Squad is hands down the best film that is canonical to the DCEU, and the second best of all the DCEU movies. My Top 5 ranking would have to be:
    1. Snyder Cut
    2. The Suicide Squad
    3. BvS
    4. Shazam
    5. Aquaman
    It’s fun, gory entertaining and feels like the Suicide Squad from the comics. They’re not intentionally taking on a threat that we would expect the Justice League to take on like in the first movie. What they do is a black ops mission to protect America’s safety and then get dragged into saving the world. That’s the Squad from the comics.
    The cast gave it their all and really nailed each of their roles. I think the best performances were easily Elba’s Bloodsport and then Ratcatcher II. John Cena as Peacemaker was both badass and funny, and I can’t wait for his spin off show. Stallone’s King Shark was comic relief but didn’t feel out of place or take you out of the story.
    At first I was worried that Bloodsport would be a Deadshot knockoff, but he actually has his own motivations and feels similar to Deadshot (explaining that if Deadshot couldn’t make the mission, then they have another marksman who can do the job) but different so that it doesn’t feel like they put in the movie because Will Smith couldn’t do the movie.
    Starro was good. I find it funny that in the comics it took the entire Justice League to take him down but in the movie he’s taken down by a Javelin and a swarm of rats. While I wish we had gotten the chance to see him go up against the Justice League, there is still the potential for him to return if perhaps the US Government manage to get his DNA and clone him.
    The biggest thing this movie did better than the first was the gruesomeness and expendable nature of Squad. The fact they die horrifically and that the majority of them all die really does make them seem more like the Squad from the comics and what the Squad should be. In the first movie only one or two members died and that was because they had a small team (albeit it was meant to be a pro type team)
    I love how Waller just sends a whole team of them to their deaths as if James Gunn knew that we expected those characters to die and just went all out. It’s a very Waller thing to do but also just adds to the fact that the Squad members are expendable.
    My only issue with the move is how they treated the original 2016 cast. You can tell the studio wants us to forget about the 2016 film. They brought 4 of the original squad members back and only 2 survived. I know there’s rumours that they couldn’t get Smith back as Deadshot due to his scheduling issues, but why no Katana or Killer Croc? Rick Flag didn’t even reference June (The Enchantress) at all. We’re they still together or what?
    I wasn’t expecting Boomerang to go out at the start of the movie because Jai Courtney is very funny as the character and was a character we recognised from the first movie. If they ‘had’ to kill him, I wished they’d done it halfway through the movie and not the start.
    Rick Flag went out in an okay way but I was kind of annoyed because he is a great character and Kinnaman does a great job. Plus he is there to be Waller’s stand in when in the field. I know that he wouldn’t have stayed on if he survived but I kind of hoped he would because of he enjoys working with the Squad. That was also a great part with his character, the fact that he becomes ‘friends’ with Harley based on their time together on the Squad following the first movie.
    It’s just a shame that we’re not going to see those two again at all in a sequel unless the Flashpoint movie does reboot things and they do come back.
    Speaking of sequels I would love to see Deadshot and Bloodsport together side-by-side in a sequel. They’re similar characters with similar skill sets and both are very badass, funny and quirky characters who do bad things but have good in them.
    The banter between the two of them would’ve make the Bloodsport & Peacemaker banter look like a friendly debate.

    For me, this is everything I wanted and more.
    As studios relentlessly pump out more and more superhero movies, it seems that more people than ever are saying the genre is tired. I am happy to report that James Gunn delivered a movie that quells such a concern with massive success. This film was frankly batshit insane and I am here for every moment of it. It’s so colourful in both it’s visuals and writing that I am just as excited to rewatch it as I was before my first viewing (maybe even moreso).
    The characters are really well written and they all standout in their own separate ways. Polka Dot Man is easily the standout for me as I loved his weird characterisation (helps that I love weird characters) and he easily had some of the funniest moments. Bloodsport, Rick Flag and Ratcatcher II were also brilliant in this and Margot Robbie easily gave her best performance as Harley Quinn. And of course, King Shark is adorably vicious! Peacemaker is an unlikable dick, but despite that I’m actually excited for the Peacemaker prequel show that was announced a while back too.
    Overall, this was a fantastic time that, while not perfect, hit every spot for me in all the right places. The violence is brutal and the action, comedy and storyline were all brilliant for me. I would get why certain people wouldn’t like the movie as it’s definitely a specific taste (and a specific humour that may not jell with everyone) but for me this was my dream superhero movie.
    The Dark Knight and Logan may be regarded as masterpieces of this genre, but to me this is the most fun of the lot; hence the high rating. Exactly the type of movie I needed to get me back in the theatre and you should definitely get your tickets as soon as you can.
    More of this please DC!

    17:50 that's a great thought because when she's on screen, it feels like Harley excels in scenarios wherein you really think she's in over her head but comes out on top every time.

    (this is my last comment on this vid) i want DC to stop there continuity for the most part they can keep subtle connections like in this film but i would like them to have every movie work on its own where they can do anything and don't need to work with the other films and can have different versions of things like they could have another suicide squad film completely disconnected to this one of have a movie with bat man where polka dot man appears at some point and we don't need to say he died in that other movie i feel trying to be a cinematic universe lowered dc's potential and id love them to just start bringing in great directors and actors to make amazing work with basis in comics

    • @charliern
      @charliern 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      you're completely right. keep the same actors, but forget the continuity - that's the way to go. gives every director and writer a lot more freedom but also means we can get to know and love the characters

      They wanted their own MCU but they tried to rush it and blew it instead, so yeah, I think they should ditch the idea of an interconnected universe and just focus on making good solo movies. Sure, add cameos and crossovers IF it serves the plot of the movie, but otherwise stop trying to be the MCU - we already have an MCU and it's been doing this a lot longer and a lot better. The first Suicide Squad definitely suffered in part from having to shoe-horn in Joker and Batman. Hell, MCU are probably going this route next too, now they have the multiverse established and What If..? up next it means not every movie has to tie into every other movie, and if they want to bring back Raimi's Spider-Man for instance, nobody will balk at the idea of that existing alongside Holland's Spider-Man.

      It was definitely a fun movie and a good movie relative to DC. I had some issues with it, but I had a consistently good time. I don’t think it is the greatest movie ever, and I don’t think it was better than either Guardians volume, but it was definitely a great increase in quality for DC. I did absolutely enjoy the way how comic booky weird things were. I also think Guardians 2 is the better Guardians film.
      And holy shit, absolutely yes, the next Suicide Squad movie needs to be titled, “A Suicide Squad”.

    I gotta say, I was surprised Ratcatcher made it to the end.
    The trailers made me think she was going to have a "We are Groot!" sacrifice moment and then her dialogue throughout the movie, the scene on the van with Bloodsport, etc, I totally thought she was gonna kick it.

    Bringing in TONS of D listers is definitely how to keep the series fresh. Although, I’d say the survivors could move on to future movies elsewhere throughout DC.
