Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker is the strongest Spider-Man of them all... and here's why! I finally break down the incredible Green Goblin fight at the end of the first movie, and why Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland wouldn't ultimately stand a chance. Who do you think would win?
Either way, looking ahead to Spider-Man No Way Home - I just hope the action can compare to the fluidity and pace of the original trilogy...
Spider-Man 1-3. Directed by Sam Raimi. Starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church.
The Amazing Spider-Man directed by Marc Webb. Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Felicity Jones.

And it was in that moment that I realized that what made Tobey the greatest superhero wasn't the webslinging or the ability to take hits. His greatest superpower all along was his ability to see the person when everyone else was determined to see the monster and his ability to forgive the person.
I think there's something to be said too that these movies came out in the wake of 9/11, the subsequent invasion of Iraq, and the beginning of the Recession. When he gets trapped unded the rubble that the Vulture threw him under and he calls for help before realizing he has to be the one to save himself, that was quite gut-wrenching. After the plane crash he looks sore and extremely bloodied and yet he still finds the will to try and save Toomes life. And finally, in the Mysterio fight, there are several moments when he gets bumped around, lit on fire and in general throughout the entire fight he barely has a moment to breathe, and by the end when he removes his mask he looks physically battered and emotionally devastated.

Newton’s 1st law states that an object in motion stays in motion unless an unbalanced force acts upon it. The train is the object in motion while Spiderman is the force trying to make the train stop.
The distance is the physical length between objects. If we wanted to find the horizontal distance of the train from the train stop, we would use the formula dH = v*t. The velocity was 35.76m/s multiplied by 46s which was the time and I would get 1,664m.
The speed also known as the 1st derivative is the distance traveled per unit time. The speed was given in the scene when Doc Ock broke off the speed handle. The speed was 80mph.
Gravity is the force that exists between things that have mass. Gravity is acting on the train, letting the train stay on the tracks and not floating around, also for Spiderman; if gravity wasn’t acting on him then he would be floating too.
Velocity is the speed given in a specific direction. The train’s speed is 80 mph or 35.76 m/s. The velocity would be 80 mph going in the distance of 1,664m.
The time that Spiderman stops the train was at 46s. It took Spiderman to fully stop the train in 46s, referring to the movie. Newton’s 2nd law stated that an object will only accelerate when an unbalanced force is acting upon it.
The equation for this is F=ma. We can use the equation F=ma because we need to find how much force the train was putting on Spiderman. We can calculate the mass of the train by itself and also add the passengers mass. The train’s mass without passengers was given to be 21,500 kg.
While the train contained about 6 cars, we can multiply 21,500kg by 6, which would give us 129,000 kg.
Based on the movie, we can assume that the train can hold about 20 passengers in each car of the train with the mass about 68 kg (150 lbs).
We can multiply 68 kg by 20 because there are about 20 people and that equals to 1,360kg.
The train contained 6 cars, so we can multiply the mass of the people 1,360kg by 6 and get 8,160. Then, we can take the train’s mass and add it to the mass of people in all 6 cars and get 137,160kg. To convert it to pounds (lbs) we can multiply it by 2.20462 and get 302,385 lbs.
Acceleration or the 2nd derivative is the change in velocity over the change in time. We have to find the acceleration of the train to find the force. We can do 0 (the initial velocity) and subtract it by 35.76m/s over the time the train came to a stop, which was 46s. We can then divide -35.76m/s over 46s and get -0.78 m/s2.
Now that we have the 2nd derivative, we can plug in -0.78m/s2 for a and when we multiply 137,160kg by -0.78m/s^2, it equals to 106,985 N. To convert N pound force, we can make a conversion table. There are 4.448 N in a pound force; We can make 1 pound force over 4.448 to 106,985N over 1. The N cancels out and we can divide 106,985 over 4.448 and get 24,052 pound force.
To convert 24,052 pound force to tons, there is 2,240 pound-force in 1 ton-force. We can use the conversion table and have 1 ton over 2,240 pound force to 24,052 pound force over 1 and divide 2,240 to 24,052, I calculated 10.74 ton-force or about 11 ton-force.
Tom Holland's Spider Man holds together a bifurcated Staten Island Ferry. The particular ferry in that scene has a weight of approximately 3,200 tons, or 6,400,000 lbs. It has a total passenger capacity of 4,400, and can additionally carry 30 vehicles. It has a 40,000 gallon fuel tank, and runs on diesel. The total weight of all of this is approximately 7,578,800 lbs (or 3,437,685 kg).
Tom grabs both halves of the train with his webbing when each half is tilted about 15 degrees away from vertical. The tension on his body to keep the ferry from tipping over works out to about 9,027,024 newtons.
How many Newtons of force did Tobey have to endure?
    300,000 Newtons. But here’s the feat;
To avoid breaking, every cubic metre of Spider-Man's web would have to soak up almost 500 million joules of energy, meaning Tobey had to endure, IN TOTAL, 500 million N.
    Thank you.

Throughout the movies it is shown how strong the winter soldier is, with Captain America struggling to hold back his metal arm. But then in the airport fight in Civil War, Peter just casually catches a punch from the winter soldier and effortlessly moves his arm to admire it while in awe at the metal arm! Same reason why Captain Marvel is just really boring to watch. She flies through ships like they're paper, completely destroys Thanos's ship, and all without any kind of strain. No cuts or bruises, she isn't out of breathe, she doesn't even look concerned. She either looks angry or disinterested. Sue, she was excited and she first started to fly, but she was also tearing through Ronan's ships like they were nothing. She is so absurdly powerful that any fight with her has little to no weight. The only time we see her get knocked down was when Thanos punched her with the power stone, and even then it just seemed contrived and the writers had to make some kind of explanation to get her out of the picture for Tony to sacrifice himself.
While Superman has Kryptonite and the need for a yellow sun, Carol has no weaknesses for anyone to take advantage of in a fight. The only way to add a struggle to anything she does going forward is for her to get her powers drained to a certain degree. Otherwise, there is absolutely no reason for her to ever lose a fight (a person's limit should not be getting punched by an infinity stone).

I just rewatched the og spiderman series and definitely not... Tobey's spiderman is actually a horrible person... he could save random people left and right, and mj, but he never even stopped for a moment to think, "maybe I need to at least have a talk with my best friend who is in a rapidly declining mental state because of me!" Like he let a misunderstanding stand in the way of their "friendship" for like 3 years (I can't remember the exact amount of time) to the point where Harry literally became a supervillian... Any real friend, or really even any good person would deal with that problem almost immediately. Tobey's spidey is very selfish, stealing people's girlfriends just because he likes the girl and wants her back, and then getting said girl (mj) into horrible situations with every supervillain he fights against 🤦‍♂️ also mj is stupid for keeping on coming back... In the end Harry imo was the only good char of that series but unfortunately he got the short end of the stick and died for the people who neglected and abused him 🤷‍♂️ but other than that if you look at this series as a tragic story of a genuinely good person who got put on the back burner while his "friends" were off playing hero for the glory, and ultimately dies because the universe is unfair and good people don't always get rewarded than it is technically a good story... just not a good superhero story 🤷‍♂️😀 imo of course

Tobey showed the Spidey that takes a ton of hits and keeps moving forward, physically and mentally too. Resilience and willpower are one of the defining traits of Spider-Man to me.
Andrew imo got the big brain side of Peter, along with the famous jokes as he fights. Also, the way he moves on screen is just perfect, the best of the three in that point.
Tom is showing a much younger Spider-Man that still has to learn how to be a hero. While very different from every other iteration of Peter I've seen, counting movies and animations, it's nice to see him growing up into the Spider-Man we know. Only egregious sin is not mentioning the big motto: "With great powers, come great responsibilities"

The fight scenes in the Raimi films really were the best. I also agree Spider-Man 3 is underrated in that regard. Really love the shot of Spider-Man dodging and demolishing rubble as he dives after Gwen as she is falling. Can't wait to see what Raimi cooks up for Doctor Strange 2, and hope No Way Home lives up to his iconic films, both in action and everything else.

Neither of them win on combat experience, because none of them actually know proper ways to fight(boxing, martial arts, etc.), meaning it comes down to physical strength. Tobey definitely has more experience brawling, because he's been Spider-man for longer, but they're both kinda bad at it from a technical standpoint. I'm going to assume that oth Spider-meb have the same levels of strength and agility for this because otherwise it gets too complicated. Tobey undoubtedly is more experienced, so it gives him an edge, but Tom has gadgets that allow him to perform things Tobey can't, such as web bombs or whatever. Tobey has another advantage of infinite webbing, so another point there to Tobey, but Tom does have Instant-Kill mode, which works to kill as fast as possible. Tom can also glide. Point for Tom because that shit is cool as fuck, and it allows for movement that Tobey can't perform(such as moving quickly across and empty field, because gliding and no where to swing, although that's dependant on the height of both of their bodies.) The Iron Spider suit Tom has also has appendages, so a point to Tom there(because extra appendages means easier grappling and blocking.) I think Tobey's webs are more durable? (Comparing scenes where Tom's webs ripped from holding the boat while Tobey's didn't Whole stopping the train.) Just came back from No Way Home. WARNING, SPOILERS BELOW:
One thing No Way Home did exceptionally well is highlighting Green Goblin's super strength, (and as a direct effect, Holland-Spidey's super durability). In Happy's apartment fight especially, he throws him through countless concrete floors, doors, etc. Out windows and down a floor only to be punched through that one too. It's an incredibly brutal fight, similar to the Maguire vs Green Gobling fight. It also shows Holland-Spidey's super strength when he gets in a few of his own punches, and even more so at the final fight, (on the shield) when he bests Green Goblin in a fair hand-to-hand fight. (Not to mention, Maguire is able to stop Holland's final blow, but they then appear to be roughly even, with Holland able to gain maybe another inch or two at most).
*edit:* No Way Home also does a great job of showing Holland's side of the giving villains a second chance part, while not taking away from Maguire's Spidey. Holland-Spidey immediately wants to find a way to save the villains, even knowing that it is more dangerous to do so. He fights Dr. Strange, one of his closest allies, just to make sure that these villains can have their potential redemption back on their own worlds. And then at the end, fueled by the murder of May when he is about to kill Green Goblin, Maguire steps in and reminds Holland of that humanity, that even someone who killed your "mother" still deserves a second chance. A cure instead of an execution. Masterfully done giving that role to Maguire, but still having Holland show those traits of the character earlier in the movie of his own accord.

When you brought in film making you kind of lost me LOL I stick to the feats and while I give Tobey the edge In durability and strength, Andrew is definitely faster than this man, and Tom Holland’s spider sense is not only superior, but between the scuffles with other avengers and, you can make a pretty fair debate of strength between those two.
Aside from that, GREAT video man! Tobey’s Spider-Man is definitely tougher than I gave him credit for.

Sam Rami's Peter being the one to try to redeem his villains is part of why I despise SM3 so much. Venom, while not known for it by the general audiences because adaptions outside video games is stuck in the 80s, (Though the Venom movies are helping combat this a little) is THE crowning example of a redemption story done right in comics, the Vegeta of comic books. Heck what stopped the two from becoming friends after Eddie's anti-hero and hero transitions for longest time was Comic!Peter holding a grudge, which fits perfectly in this movie's lesson on forgiveness. Basically a villain that not only fits the theming of the movie but can be redeemed into a ally without death, giving Peter another type of win (successfully redeeming a misguided person after the loss of Ock) and setting up a spin off series was gift wrapped to Sam but because he personally disliked the character, he warped the character to be the complete and total opposite of what comicbook!Eddie is and made him a generic evil counterpart.

Sam Raimi didn't understand Venom quintessentially, which is why he didn't want to have Venom in the third movie, he only wanted Harry and Sandman, but the studio pushed for Venom and we got what we got....a character that doesn't sit quite right because the person responsible for bringing the character to us wasn't quite comfortable with the character to begin with....it wasn't Raimi's fault it was Sony's

They are the best due to the insanely fantastic character development you don’t get in modern super hero films, the stakes and consequences of actions and outcomes, extremely well written stories, well developed villains (yes even Venom), so much love and care into each film and not just all green screen cookie cutter shots.

I think it's the way the Raimi unequivocally understands who Spider-Man and Peter Parker is. Spider-Man 2 opens with Peter delivering pizzas, but he can't quite deliver them fast enough because he has to stop a car chase. As a result he gets fired, and can't make his rent. That is Spider-Man right there. I love holland's portrayal and those movies, but watching the Raimi trilogy again recently really hammered home the fact that those are the best Spider-Man movies imho

Maguire captured the nerdy side of peter parker really well (although it did kinda break my immersion how all the actors looked 30 years old), but imo he didnt have enough jokes or quips as spiderman.
Garfield was the other way around, he had imo the best spiderman dialogue and quips but he was “too cool” for peter.

" Harry , I was there the night you're father died.... the man who stole his glider and performance enhancers killed him. He was tieing up a lose end after killing your father's colleagues . I couldn't save him . I'm sorry , I didn't have the strength to tell you before . I can assure you I did NOT kill your father , the Goblin did . • @brucewayne8252
      @brucewayne8252 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep
And when Harry finds his Dad's lair it will complicate things .
His guilt + anger + frustration + distrust of Peter's lies + Norman hullucination = New Goblin .
So in an alternate universe where Peter can explain himself better like in my previous comment ....
Before the events of Spiderman 3
Peter : " Harry why are you ignoring me ?! You don't return my calls , you regect my visits to your office . "
Harry : " Get out you lying hypocrite "
Peter( suspicious ): " What are you talking about ? I told you what happened . "
he sees the look on Harry's face
Harry : "Peter YOU killed my father "
Peter:" Look Harry , this is too toxic for our friendship , I must tell you , your father WAS the Gre.. "
      Harry: " I know "
"You know the truth about your father now ..."
harry's face says it all , the anger and everything
" The reason I hid the truth about your father was because his dying wish was that I wouldn't tell you . I'm sorry if I came out as a liar , I told you the truth , but the only difference is your father being the Goblin. He tried to kill me with his own glider then he killed himself . He tried to stall me by pretending to be Norman . He called me his savior and told me not to let the Goblin take him again , I wanted to help him . Not for a second did I consider laying a finger on him , he was like a father to me. He wasn't himself in his final days , your father was gone already . He was no murderer and you know that. The Goblin killed the people on the balcony , tried to kill me , Aunt May , you , and even twice for MJ . The Norman I knew was a good man . He would never want us to fight . He wanted you to live a happy life with a father to look up to even after his death , he did not want to ruin it for you .
Again I am sorry I complicated things , I sacrificed a lot to honour your father's wish . It must have been painful for you , I know how it feels . "
      Harry( touched but in denial)
: How do I know that you didn't kill him with his own blade ? You have lied to me before Peter . "
Peter : "If I killed him I would have hidden the body instead of cleaning it and returning it to you for a proper burial . You have to trust me Harry , I am your best friend , your brother . "
Peter leaves as Harry stares at a picture of the two of them .

I think that's why Holland's Spidey never clicked with me, a long time Spider-Man who has read the comics from the first to the Dan Slott era. Spidey has always been about perseverance and, as you so elegantly put it, "the Rocky principle," the way he keeps getting up no matter how hard he's hit. Sure, Holland had that one "If This Be My Destiny" scene from Homecoming where he lifted the concrete, but most of the time, he's forced to dress up in his fancy iron costume and loses part of what makes him so appealing in the first place: just a guy in a homemade suit with above-average super-strength. Not Hulk-level strength. Even his intelligence isn't the level of Reed Richards or Tony Stark. He's the Average Joe of the Marvel universe.

That's only an issue in far from home, in the first movie he wanted to be a hero even when others tried to make him stop. The problem with holland's spidey is that we never had the uncle ben story. And while learning to take responsability wasthe start of the spider-men journey, it only happened in ffh for holland's spidey and that was his arc thoughout the movie.

I was thinking about the fight between Spider-Man and the Goblin in 2002 vs in NWH, and wondering why they both felt brutal, but in a different way. It’s interesting that even though the first fight is on much smaller scale and the second looks far more destructive, the first one feels just as physically intense-if not more at times. I think it comes down to much of what you talked about, like how important the POV is. Also, Tobey’s screams, the silence, and the focus on each blow really adds to the effect. You can show someone being beaten to a pulp, but if you don’t take the time to frame each scene so that the audience feels it, it can come off as senseless gore. While the NWH battle between the Goblin and Spider-Man was brutal, it still didn’t feel as tactile to me-at least not until the very end, when the Goblin was choking Peter and stepping on his back. It just felt less real, even though they were punching each other through walls and Spider-Man was bleeding. You didn’t feel the weight of each blow or enter as deeply into Peter’s fear of physical subjugation. It’s only in the end, when he’s subjugated, that you really understand the intensity of it. But even then, it’s more of an understanding than an experience. (NWH is one of my favorite Spider-Man movies, so I’m not throwing shade, but this was something I noticed while watching it.)

That up close shot of DaFoe saying he’s gonna finish off MJ nice and slow, with his real (and personally iconic) teeth leering through the fangs of the Goblin Mask will NEVER FAIL to creep me the hell out. The first and second movies both have such strong horror elements that I feel like make it even more like the comic books than any of the other iterations have been able to accomplish-like the horror elements when properly incorporated really heighten the drama OF the action. I loved this video essay so much. Tobey seriously gets his ass kicked all the way up and down three movies. He can really get his butt kicked nearly all the way dead and still keep moving forward. Plus I always liked the idea that Peters life is so fucking busy just trying to like make it to his multiple jobs and do right by aunt may etc. that he doesn’t have the time to like, mend his suit in between encounters with bad guys trying to kill him. Idk. I love the Sam Ramie movies. You did right by this iconic screen hero. Nice vid.
