Fontaine is my favourite region so far. The main quest is sublime, subquests are awesome, especially the Elynas quest. I do love everything about this region, - characters, lore, exploration. Fontaine for the win!
In fact, the city's water system is a large closed system, as you already suspected. Steam plays a crucial role in generating energy. When machines are heated, water is used to cool them, the steam rises and collects in the towers and pipes (including in the large central arch) in collecting containers built into them. If these containers are full, the water will flow downwards using gravity and small rotors will be operated on its way. The waterways and canals are aesthetically good-looking reservoirs that naturally collect water (rain) and release it (solar evaporation). Towers and buildings can/could also be water storage (this is an artistic solution instead of water tanks). The sewer system plays a role in the sorting and drainage of water in the city (wastewater is drained and replaced with new water) and the majority of energy is also generated under the city.
I love this explanation focusing on the wisdom of fontaine people. There is just one small question: while having such massive structures across the entire city, serving as enery generation and circulation, Focalor did say she was supplying Fontaine's power consumption with the energy she gathered from the jurisdiction machine. And, as she specified, though only a small portion of that energy goes to the city but it's already enough for the entirety of fontaine.
@@nyankosoldier5156 That energy might be the main source, but its also a very specific source depending on the processes of this jurisdiction machine. Water can permanently supply smaller systems and pumps.
I'd like to add in 10:20 , the Callas Line (the aquabus line behind the Palais that connects to the Institute) was intentionally blocked off because according to the lore, it was destroyed when an accident in the Fontaine Research Institute happened. You can even meet a Melusine who used to operate the Callas Line aquabus in a world quest.
I appreciate how the city looks like a roman theatre, every street going deeper the closer they are to the center, with the palais mermonia at the top centre, like furina and neuvillete's seats at the Opera
Thank you Bee for shouting out my Fontaine video in the description! Your videos are always so funny and I truly think Teyvat should hire you as their architect and safety inspector!
The best thing it does as a city is feeling extraordinarily familiar. Besides having visited medieval german towns, that remind me of the houses of mondstadt, Fontaine city in general recalls a combination of country i live in and it's neighbours and france. A modern city where classes are clearly divided and you feel suffocated by the authority and the city itself. And i love the architecture, so it's my home city in the game now.
10:15 If I'm not mistaken, this line goes to that giant mountain that hasn't been released in the game yet (if I'm not mistaken the name is Mount Esus), there we have another port (there are 3 in total) and a village.
5:18 no wonder at my first arrival in Fontaine, it does remind me of an old factory/industrial building across the US or Europe. Well of course because Fontaine is based on the industrial revolution! Something about art deco, it shows optimism towards the future, not quite but resembles modern minimalist architecture. And seeing one in person was surreal. Anyway, though the main differences are that Fontaine did not show an environmental disaster (wait, maybe the institute's explosion??) which during the actual industrial revolution is very much rampant nor labor abuse isn't much of a problem in Fontaine either.
I like how it looks just teleporting in and going to the guild and alchemy bench, but it sucks to actually walk around it and try to get in or out if you haven't done it in a while. I think they could have done with less walls or at least more obvious entrances and exits.
i think that's why she got so annoyed at it lol, the same thing happens in the angel's share, you try to exit after purchasing a lovely apple cider and instead you talk to the bard grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
The thing with video game cities is that some of them are just a representation of a city. They often are missing a lot of infrastructure. And because it's a mobile game to there are many limitations. But just think if they made every city just as big and complex as Novingrad from Witcher 3, and maybe we could see the real size when genshin gets an anime.
Fontaine is a city that feels like when "new" characters pop up, i get why i haven't met them the millions of times i've walked the streets because of the layers. Before that, official trailers showed they noticed us but we didn't notice them because we were focused on a mission.
Fontaine gives me theme park vibes when I’m there. I love the fountains on the steps and everywhere running 24/7 like the city architects really want you to know it’s the city of water.
13:20 You know what i don't like? Floating stone platforms. To me it is just lazy game design, if they want a slick modern look they should make it metal, if instead they wanted classical look they should have modelled pillars and arches supporting it. It wouldn't take away from the general vibe but it would add a lot in terms of believability.
Of COURSE it's Fontaine. Liyue could literally never, and Mondsadt it just to precious. Natlan should be a second one, and we all know Inazuma is just a lost cause.
Fontaine’s city is one my least favorite out of all the cities in the whole game. Its monotonous colors makes it feel like it was carved off of a giant rock, the ground and the walls seem to be made of the same material and since there’s little to no variety, it almost looks like the entire city and all the buildings within it are built and finished at the same time. The proportions throw me off too. Sometimes it feels like the city was not built for regular sized humans but slightly taller giants lol. But I guess it’s all a deliberate choice. If Fontaine is to withstand a massive flood, they would need to use such massive and strong materials. While the buildings do look too rigid for my tastes, it does look like it can survive big waves. I have always criticized Fontaine (and Sumeru but that’s a different topic) for straying too far from reality while Mondstandt, Liyue Harbor and Inazuma City has largely felt like it was a good representation of the real world, but Fontaine cannot afford to copy the architectures of our real world Europe exactly. The real world inspiration for Fontaine does not deal with an imminent threat of a massive flood and thus Fontaine needed to be adjusted to seem harder and stronger than real world Europe. This is something I have come to appreciate now.
Yeah I think Fontaine is also lacking in cultural representation compared to other regions, it was heavily inspired by the industrial revolution. I would be happier if it had more French representation there.
@@bakitamawhat types of things are missing? Because I just did a world quest with a Fontaine traveler trading photos whose named after a famous French photographer. They have a lot of research done. But I could see things cut from when the plot still focused on "finding a new power source" and a heavier focus on the two classes.
Fontaine is that type of city trap where it looks amazing from above or far away or at some specific angel, however when u start walking around by foot u will see how over size/empty and somewhat depress some areas are. Some walls are just too big that u cant ignore the big bricks stacking on each other one by one. everything starting to feel flat that it could crush u one day, and the greens help to reduce that feeling but it just not enough. don't forget that this city is filled with water, and u know what water can do, erosion, slime, moss, moisture, wet, etc. because of how much shade the city has which is hard to keep things clean everyday/week. it basically creating more problems for both the city and the people.
I believe a key purpose of the arch in the middle of the city is as a structural support for the Aquabus line and -station. The two vertical stems coming down from it connect to the underside of the Clementine Line. A better solution would’ve been a pointed arch but that would’ve looked less harmonic tbh
I think the elevation reasoning is literally just due to the floods, there’s the lower priority, or even lower class areas like Poisson (I forgot how to spell it) and the under ground that will be first to see the consequences of the flood, then the lower levels of it, and it goes higher with the priority of the place. But he’s, it is the most confusing city map, it looks amazing from the outside but inside it’s just walls and confusing paths.
personally gotta love the implication that fontaine contrary to literally anyone figured out concrete and plumbing while the rest of the worls is till using medieval ways (wonder if xilonen and phlogiston did something about it too)
one thing i HATE about fontaine is that the whole city literally only has one cooking station and it's not even close to the alchemy or dailies, while it makes sense because interestingly most stalls in liyue, inazuma and sumeru cook food but in fontaine they just sell products, it's still annoying
The first time I saw myself in the court of Fontaine, I thought it was literally a Waterpark. Actually, it would be an interesting topic to discuss on how teyvat is designed like an adventure park.
The city of Sumeru irritates me no less. The road there leads to an unknown destination, passes on all sides of the tree and it is not known at what level each of its sides is. Even the position of the portals cannot be understood from the map. There is only one from which you can plan to any point in the city. But I still do not remember which one. Sumeru simply became a thing of the past and I forgot about it.
How is the road confusing in Sumeru? If the road "disappears" is because it's a ramp below the camera. If you mean the topography, that's just the map as a whole, things disappear all the time because something hangs over them. Many areas use this to have hidden goodies in the world. The right portal is the one high up by the akademiya since it let's you go into the school or easily drop to the reputation guy. The other two are by the respective entrances to town, one of which is by Katherine, the smith and alchemy table, the other by the farms and hospital.
That upper garden seems purely decorative for people using the aquabus lines. It's like theming around a monorail route. Nobody's meant to "walk" them, other than gardeners. Also, my guess for what the "pipe" across the middle of the city means, I think that this is not a pipe. I think it's an elevator, similar to the St. Louis Arch, it goes up and curves across the top. Why? Eh. It can get you across town? It gives you a good view? Either way, I think it's for people. I will also have to point out one important factor when discussing Genshin's architecture (and most games), which is that the world map is not to scale. That is to say, if you look at a building that is 10m by 10m, then that building is not intended to actually be that small, and if you go inside it, then it will likely be more like 20-30m square. Everything in the open world is at a smaller scale than we're meant to understand the "real life" version of it to be. The distance between one city and another is meant to be ten times or more further than the game makes it appear. The "real" Teyvat would have several times the population, several times the number of buildings, and each building will be at least slightly larger. The world we see in game is representational, like Epcot, scaled to be "fun sized."
Fontaine feels very much like the kind of place you'd be very excited to visit, but wouldn't want to live there long-term. It's impressive from the outside, but opressive on the inside.
I think fontaine would have benefited from having actual canals like Venice or Amsterdam to move through the city. The acquabuses way up always seemed so out of place to me, it would have been more fitting to have the waterways IN the actual city
Fontaine is a nation of stupidity. City has prolly the sheettiest lvl design i ever saw in games (and i played tons). Just look at pointless lifts and 1way aquabus lines. Every minute in Fontaine made me lose braincells.
Imo Fontaine's architecture could have been much better, closer to looking like a steampunk-ish city like Columbia from Bioshock and/or Piltover from Arcane instead of it looking primarily white with too very few shades of ocean blue and it's city-walls looking almost like a fishbowl.
17:15 I don't know if you knew this but... (Click to "cook") Day 1: The drinks are good Day 2: The drinks are good Day 3: The drinks are super good! Day 4: The drinks are good Day 5: The drinks are really, really, good Day 6 & 7: Still Open!
In short, we can call that period as Bella Epoque. Exactly the same period as you say, between 1870-1910. Btw using music from Victoria 2 👌🏻, fits well.
6:40 if it counts, Ritou has the cutscene of us arriving (and the first time we meet Thoma). the city itself doesn't have a cutscene or any dialogue though
I think i genuinely saw Fontaine in a lucid dream years before Genshin even released. It was mixed with parts of Neuvilette's teaser. I was first standing in the field that looked quite the same, and then i got to the city which was north of it that looked pretty similar. The dream was short, so that's it. But i still remember it. Lucid dreams are exceptionally rare.
Yeah, I’m not a fan of Fontaine- even when I have my Daily Quests there, I teleport to Mondstadt to collect the rewards. And that their current energy source is Arke, in Ousia and Pneuma- which means Soul and Being, and in a city with a history of splitting souls from bodies… it exists with no implications whatsoever…
amazing video, about the cooking pot, when I need it I prefer to TP to the sewers because there is a cooking pot near it, so it is much mor efficient than the café...
@MiyuKawasaki that's easier, but still wondering about the logic of it, the final cutscene showed the court being flooded to the top, but the land mass around it would require the level of all water to rise, and i think that'd logically go into the waterfalls in a wave, maybe? or maybe it'd make sense for the inside of the city to flood and keep water inside its walls, but that doesn't happen- ugh, sorry for all the yapping!!
@@pochiche6398 Hmm tbh I'm not sure about the details either (and it was never explained), but here's the logic of the flood imo: The flood is meant to wash the sins of all Fontainians away, and according to the prophecy slates, the flood can't happen as long as Furina doesn't get put on trial. This means that every Fontainian will gather at the opera house to watch the trial, since it's a once-in-a-lifetime show in Fontaine (potentially even attracting all Fontainians that were abroad at the time, like Xavier) This is to ensure that every Fontainian will be hit by the flood and no one gets spared, and also the reason why not the ENTIRE fontaine needs to be flooded, simply the center part of the region (every NPC was either at the city or the court at the time) I'm more confused as to how all the animals survived, haha Didn't seem like they were rescued with Wriothesley's ship (similar to noah's ark) I think they kept it all vague on purpose bc it wasn't the main focus of the quest. The main focus was on the Hydro Archon's plan to save Fontaine, which worked out as intended. We didn't even get an explanation for why Childe's vision stopped working or who Phase 2 of the weekly boss is (the shadow figure). I guess they're leaving it up to our interpretation
I would love to see Teyvet before all the ruins became ruins. There are random ruins everywhere, especially in Mondstadt and Liyue. Thank you this video was great!
i actually dont like fontaine city all that much. i just hate how theres all these monolithic platforms and walls, and the buildings are so small and feel out of place
I guess food and supplies comes in via the air ships since there is one in game that takes you from outside the city to the top point of the city but they is no access go said top point but to climb
You know i just try to not think about the structure of the world that much because i start to lose it a little bit every time i think about how large Teyvats true size is and how the cities and villages would look scaled to that. Fontaine and Sumeru i just struggle to imagine how those would work on a larger scale, but they currently dont make sense either cos at best like 20 people could live in them, so i just dont think about how everything functions.
Court of Fontaine is a visually impressive city, and probably the best-designed one across Teyvat so far. But I really hate how the scale of Fontaine is fitted towards you, the player, and not its inhabitants. The Aquebus lines, elevators, and recreational spaces are so detached from their worldbuilding that, outside of that wow factor on your first arrival, Court of Fontaine seems poorly realized. Like the environmental design team had a very clear vision of what Fontaine should be, working closely with the lore writers to create a surprisingly complete slice of history. And then the map designers get bored halfway through and shove default assets together so the outline fits, and leave it at that.

I think fontaine would have benefited from having actual canals like Venice or Amsterdam to move through the city. The acquabuses way up always seemed so out of place to me, it would have been more fitting to have the waterways IN the actual city
was waiting for you to release a vidseo about this, love your genshin geography vids
Fontaine is a nation of stupidity. City has prolly the sheettiest lvl design i ever saw in games (and i played tons). Just look at pointless lifts and 1way aquabus lines. Every minute in Fontaine made me lose braincells.
Wonder why how do you still persist in playing this fantasy game
@@bakitama How does stupidity and fantasy correlate with each other?
@@princessochka3690 I think this video explains it 🤷♀️
The broken lines are the ones that go to a) the research lab that blew up into cubes and b) the mountain that's still beyond the playable map.
fontaine city still hard for me to explore. and you explain some of it why. now it makes sense
Beerevity gradually rises to become my favorite Genshin creator. Peak Vahumana Scholar.
just finished the AQ. Still can't bring myself to go to Natlan.
Fontaine is great
yessssssssssssssssssssss, I always feel such a relief whenever you post a new video
Fontaine was peak and its city was peak. So beautiful the thought behind so many decisions

Day 2: The drinks are good
Day 3: The drinks are super good!
Day 4: The drinks are good
Day 5: The drinks are really, really, good
Day 6 & 7: Still Open!
Hole frick the pure happiness i feel every time i is you have posted. Best genshin content you can fine out there
Excellent video as always Beerevity!
In short, we can call that period as Bella Epoque. Exactly the same period as you say, between 1870-1910. Btw using music from Victoria 2 👌🏻, fits well.
FINALLY. FINALLY SOMEONE ADDRESSED THIS. I thought about that since 4.0. help
God, how I missed your videos, Bee! I love to see your editing and silly talk, as well as when you just incarnate the Mika within yourself, lol
I totally forgot about the underwater fountain city ruins. Should check them out again.
Contains city is one of my favs.
6:40 if it counts, Ritou has the cutscene of us arriving (and the first time we meet Thoma). the city itself doesn't have a cutscene or any dialogue though
Beerevity yet again certifying her title of one of if not the most unique genshin centric content creator
Me when my city is designed with “aesthetics in mind” (it looks like a Texas highway interchange):
Beerevity at it again. Breaking the suspension of disbelief. I love these videos!
Nothing beats the satisfaction of finding the perfect video to eat too
I think i genuinely saw Fontaine in a lucid dream years before Genshin even released. It was mixed with parts of Neuvilette's teaser. I was first standing in the field that looked quite the same, and then i got to the city which was north of it that looked pretty similar. The dream was short, so that's it. But i still remember it. Lucid dreams are exceptionally rare.
more water slides needed XD omg this was a peak video !!
I love fontaine I love furina I love fontaine lore I love fontaine era I love fontaine exploration
I have always wondered how you film some of these clips. Is there some way of flying that I'm unaware of? XD
It's called AlgoCine and we developed it a while ago. There's a description link.
The random gojo jumpscare is so wonderful
"Hi! I'm the Industrial Revolution." PEAK
i already need your take on the connection between the stadiun and the tribes, because omg it pissed me soooooo much
LOVEEE YOUR VIDEOS
I just love the map its besides the story like the only reason i play
Headsup your intro bit had some funky audio mixing....
Damn now you point our the architecture yeah i can't unsee it
amazing video, about the cooking pot, when I need it I prefer to TP to the sewers because there is a cooking pot near it, so it is much mor efficient than the café...
NEEDED SOMTHING TO WATCH TONIGHT
Yay! I hope you're enjoying the lantern rite!
Court of Fontaine is the prettiest settlement imo
As an actual architect (student) Fontaine is nice to look at from afar and hurts my brain when I think about it
I never did find the entrance to that roller coaster even though I can see sections of track everywhere
video idea: what would each region lokked like if they revuild all their ruins or damage cities/villages?
They can hire a city planner team to make the layout of the city though.
Please do WUWA version please…I think you’ll enjoy dissecting it ❤️
Hey can you please tell me how you get those camera angles? Pls 🥺
Check description~
@Algoinde okay thx
BEEE!!!!! ur back
maybe im stupid but i could never understand how fontaine could be flooded given it's elevated over the rest of teyvat 😭
Apparently not the entire fontaine was flooded, only the "court of fontaine region"
It didn't even reach Romaritime Harbor according to an npc
@MiyuKawasaki that's easier, but still wondering about the logic of it, the final cutscene showed the court being flooded to the top, but the land mass around it would require the level of all water to rise, and i think that'd logically go into the waterfalls in a wave, maybe? or maybe it'd make sense for the inside of the city to flood and keep water inside its walls, but that doesn't happen- ugh, sorry for all the yapping!!
@@pochiche6398 Hmm tbh I'm not sure about the details either (and it was never explained), but here's the logic of the flood imo:
The flood is meant to wash the sins of all Fontainians away, and according to the prophecy slates, the flood can't happen as long as Furina doesn't get put on trial. This means that every Fontainian will gather at the opera house to watch the trial, since it's a once-in-a-lifetime show in Fontaine (potentially even attracting all Fontainians that were abroad at the time, like Xavier)
This is to ensure that every Fontainian will be hit by the flood and no one gets spared, and also the reason why not the ENTIRE fontaine needs to be flooded, simply the center part of the region (every NPC was either at the city or the court at the time)
I'm more confused as to how all the animals survived, haha
Didn't seem like they were rescued with Wriothesley's ship (similar to noah's ark)
I think they kept it all vague on purpose bc it wasn't the main focus of the quest. The main focus was on the Hydro Archon's plan to save Fontaine, which worked out as intended. We didn't even get an explanation for why Childe's vision stopped working or who Phase 2 of the weekly boss is (the shadow figure). I guess they're leaving it up to our interpretation
Can we get a video about the structure of the Fortress of Meropide? I think that would be fun!
pretty sure you are first one to compliment Fontaine esthetic architecture!
everyone just say they hate it because it's so confusing
My headcannon for genshin is that the world and cities are actually much bigger than what we have in the game and things that dont seem functional are
I would love to see Teyvet before all the ruins became ruins.
3:55 vic 2 soundtrack jumpscare
Thank you for the architecture lesson, professor beerevity!
What this vid teaches me are there are still areas of the city I have never seen how is that possable?
This is just What I need right Now
Court of Fontaine is a visually impressive city, and probably the best-designed one across Teyvat so far.
And then the map designers get bored halfway through and shove default assets together so the outline fits, and leave it at that.
dont forget "Teyvat have theyre own laws" include physics hehe
