    Having owned the multistrada, S1000XR and R1250GSA, Ducatis multi competes with neither bike as far as performance, rider comfort and function goes. I’m extremely impressed with the GS and BMW motorcycles.

    I just bought a R1250GS upgrading from a Versys 650. I feel like royalty riding on it, it's amazing. The agility of the GS has to be experienced to be believed, i don't know how they made such a big bike so maneuverable

    It is for older bikes. People dont understand that older people got experience. And with experience comes wisdom. Old people want more things. That is why when someone says to me that is for old people, i take extra attention to the ``old stuff``.

    The reason the GS isn’t standing up under braking is the telelever suspension. The rake and trail isn’t changing like the conventional forks do when compressing under braking. It’s not a function of the abs pro.

    Great video ! Just one small comment - the stabile turns under breaks are not caused by Cornering ABS (this work only in case of emergency breaking and limit the slip of front wheel in corner), but mainly by Telelever suspension.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes thankyou the telelever does a great job. I have recently heard that BMW have removed it from the new R1300GS range.... which is going to be a big concern for us

    Amaizing reviews! You know so much more than bmw sales people. I'm trying to choose between GS and GSA and can not find good videos. You said it's completely different bikes. I think it would be very helpful video if you did comparison. Why are they so different? Sales people say GSA just have bigger gas tank, wider fairings and higher suspension. And it's better to buy GSA because it already has crash bars, luggage racks and better resale value. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Nerijus and welcome to the channel. Bmw sell approximately equal volumes of GS and GSA models, as to resale value both are Extremely good and about equal but this may be slightly different from one country to the next. Yes your description of the difference is correct but the GSA is a much bigger bike and weighs more. 10kg does not sound much but if you add the adventure racks and crash bars it’s a bigger difference.
      My advice is to go and test ride both and see what you think 🤔.
      The GSA is definitely better for long distance touring due to the extra wind protection. But for me the standard GS was the right choice and on long tours it’s been brilliant.
      Perhaps in the summer bmw will give a GSA to test for a long weekend and if they do a video will follow.
      I’m pleased you enjoy the series many more episodes to come once the weather improves.
      Best wishes Carl

    Dear Carl, I just (had to) rented a R1250GS in France. Because my XR broke down. The GS really suprised me, it is that good. I was surised how confident it makes yo feel in cornering. I only had it for 3 days, but was scraping the pegs already on the 2nd day. It's the telelver that makes all difference in my opinion. Super stable in corners. never had a bike that felt that planted into the corners. And ABS pro do works! I'm going into corners trailbraking and it's a peace of cake, just to add more breaking. It keeps it line perfect

    Thank you Carl for your very informative videos and especially on the multistrada that I am currently studying.
    I come back to the GS that I was able to try, loaned by a dealer in 2021.
    I share with you my feedback.
    Very interesting test and I agree with you it is a fantastic motorcycle yes... except for one subject, the width of the handlebar grips! the palm of my left hand (accelerator) measures 11.5cm at its widest. The tip of my palm got stuck with the lug of the handle before the hand guard. Pffft. back to the dealership, verdict offered, " you have to cut the lug with a cutter...! and remove the hand guard...!
    I was really disappointed with the reaction of the dealer for a 25K€ machine and finally I abandoned this motorcycle project, because it wasn't confortable.
    I am not a lumberjack or a wrestler, I imagine that I am not the only one concerned.
    Since then I regularly put my left hand on the handlebars and I have never found this defect on other .
    Good continuation, so weit und so gut wie möglich.
    Herzlichen Danke und freundlichen Grüssen aus Elsass

    Very well done Carl on your first impression review. Having been a fan of the the naked roadster since 1994, having owned the 850, 1200 and 1250 and having heard , as you did, all the hype surrounding this bike, I wanted to experience first hand what the GS was all about. Boy, I was amazed how flickable and comfortable this bike is despite itś size and weight. Great torque and a suspension that flattens out the bumps and you could ride this bike all day long. Needless to say, i am now the proud owner of a Triple Black 1250. Even as a small rider, this bike inspires confidence. And yes, I fit the cliché of a GS rider, being 64, modular helmet, etc, but that doesn’t lessen the fact that the GS is a superb, well rounded bike. There is a reason for its popularity, though it has its price. Looking forward to your next installment… greetings, Jim

    Hi on the 28th March 2022 I turned 60, I have owned all incarnations of the 1200-1250 GS since 2004 18 years done some 110k miles combined. I LOL when you said you thought it was for the older rider, but I know what you meant I didn't take offence LOL. The reason that you have a great ducati or Triumph etc. is BMW has set the bar so high everyone else has to produce a bike better than they would have just to get close then BMW nudge it a bit higher. But as they say there is a bike and price for everyone, looking forward to your ongoing review. Kind regards Robert from N.I.

    Hi. I really enjoy your videos thank you, and I wonder if you could help me, as I'm hoping to get a 1250 GS (or possibly the 1300), maybe next year and have watched tons of videos about it, but came across this one on TH-cam:-
    th-cam.com/video/kOznxdxPUK4/w-d-xo.html
    In it, he describes at the end of the video, one thing he absolutely hates about the GS, and that is the suspension!
    I was rather surprised about that and I understand what he is saying, based on riding it on bad roads, but I haven't heard anyone else say that about the GS, so I am wondering if you have any comments or explanation as to why he might feel so strongly about it, or if you can think of an explanation as to why that may be his experience?
    Could there be a way to adjust it that would work in that instance?
    Thank you for your time if you have any to answer this! 🤗

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gillian, the GS and A are big heavy bikes and for 100% off road work there are better bikes with better suspension. But that’s not really what the GS is for. The GSA does have more suspension travel than the standard GS and would work better off-road. I don’t think the new 1300 is going to improve that much in terms of suspension.
      Personally I think the suspension is quite amazing considering the range of riders and roads it needs to work on. Personally never had a issue.
      Although I would choose to ride a bike with 100kg less off road anyway as for me 250kg is way to much off-road. And I’m a strong chap !!!!
      If you really need a 100% off-road bike then maybe the KTM 890R Adventure would be the better choice.
      Carl

    • @gillianbrodie6807
      @gillianbrodie6807 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justthewayitis Thanks Carl, but I don't want an off road bike at all. I want the bike for long distance touring. The guy in the video took his on ordinary roads in Ireland, which were a bit rough, and he said the suspension was pants/absolutely rubbish. When he had it in dynamic mode, it rattles his teeth and when he put it in road mode, it wallowed so much he felt sick (or words to that effect). This surprised me as no one I have seen videos from, had been anywhere near so forthright, and I wondered if maybe there was a problem with his particular bike! 🤗

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gillian, I watched that video too, that’s not my experience with my bike. On those roads I would be 100% in Road Mode, not Dynamic also depending on the undulating surface I would use preload in either auto or max, probably max if I was carrying a passenger. But it’s difficult to guess without being there on that very road.
      Road mode can feel under damped on very undulating surfaces but again with out riding that particular road who really knows.
      Perhaps you might like to take the Tiger 1200 out and see if it’s really that much better than the GS.
      My reply isn’t really going to help answer your question, so maybe you can book a test ride on both bikes on the same day or weekend and test yourself….. and report back what you find.
      Kindest regards Carl

    Interesting review. Thanks. Currently ride a 12RT (WC). I’ve ridden a number of GS’s (even a couple of Adventures) and they’ve never quite ticked the box for me. Had a 650GS alongside my old 11RT, but found I hardly rode it. Still really fancy a 12GS though. But cannot justify having two bikes and the wind protection of the RT is too good when the weather’s bad or very cold.

And your experience with that dealership is so positive you 100% will recommend them to anyone you meet/talk to who are interested in buying a BMW. I always hated the GS1200 as i found it too tall for me (29" inside leg) BUT when they brought out the 1250 i was surprised on how easy it was to adjust the suspention via the TFT and rubber bungs uner the seat. I can get 3/4 of my foot firm;y on the ground. Lots of torque and light as a feather when u and running. Bought the Exclusive version in 2019 and never looed back, so far its been to Norway, Sweden and Sain (before the lock down) Off to Italy in July.

      I’m 5’4” with 25” inside leg, currently riding a R1200RT. I’ve ridden GS and GSA and find that as long as there’s a little momentum when riding, the weight disappears. Having the weight on the engine down low matters a lot. I usually get difficulty on machines that have a ‘conventional’ upright engine as it shifts the moment of weight higher.

      Hi Andy, the Versys is a good bike at a very affordable price. 12 countries... now that is a lot of touring, and now with your GSA probably much more comfortable. Here in our local bike club we have 3 x GSA, and they love them. Glad you like the start to the new series, the next episode will be released on Thursday. Best wishes Carl

    The new BMW 1250 GS is a brilliant bike. It's a quantum leap in handling and performance over my older BMW 1150 GS. I am about to head off for a 3-month tour around the USA and Canada, this should be the perfect bike for tackling the mountain roads in Colorado and British Columbia.

      Carl … I am changing out my Bridgestone A41 tires that came with the bike , I got 8000 km out of them, the front is worn out, with still 30% left on the rear tire. I always replace both front and rear tires at same time. For this trip I will be going with a set of Metzler Roadtec01. I have never had them on a bike before, but everyone praises them for their longevity and grip on wet surfaces. I am one of those long distance riders who ride in the rain, so hopefully the Roadtec will live up to their reputation

    Currently on the market for a 1250 GSA myself. I ride a BMW s1000r, but my girlfriend wants to tag along on a few biketrips. Got a decent deal on a brand new GSA in Rallye colors, but scared to death of buying a new GSA now and then BMW will launch a 1300 GS/GSA for next year.. Kind of been in the cards that they will, no new colors this year, you can even get the 40th year edition color (renamed 719) this year. Smells fishy. So trying to find a used one thats either the blue HP model from 2019/2020 or Rallye from 21 with performance package and not that many kilometers on it. I know these machines are reliable, but I don't really want to buy a used bike with 30000-50000 km or more. I'd prefer to get one that's barely been used. But it's hard to come by.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Nessaj, yes it is difficult to decide to wait for a new model... or buy now. My thoughts are to buy now, the new 1300GS will have some improvements like Radar and Blind Spot detection, and possibly 10HP more, but BMW will need to add more watercooling (Complete engine and cylinder heads) if they add more power ... which will add more weight. BMW are currently having lots of supply issues for parts... maybe the new bike will arrive at the end of the year.... maybe next year. I know a few people that changed from S1000R to the R1250R Sport and really enjoy the 1250 motor, the Adventure is a nice bike too, i hope to have that on test later this year. Carl

    I've been a 1500 GoldWing rider for the past 23 years and just bought a new GS Anniversary Edition so I could ride some of the many dirt roads and BDRs in this part of the western U.S. It really is an easy bike to ride, although compared to my old '89 Wing it feels very tall. But you're absolutely right with the weight distribution thanks to that boxer engine......it makes it so easy to balance that it seems more like a 300lb bike vs a 500+ pounder.

      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jim, thank for leaving a comment, I have only been to the western side of the US once and it was a lovely trip, you're very lucky to have such beautiful open dirt roads that you can explore. Here in Europe things are a little restricted with regards to dirt roads, but we do have lots of curves and corners to play on. Today the Snow returned and it looks like we will have temperatures down to -9° C this week... Best wishes Carl

    Thanks for this. I have committed to a 2022 1250GS Rallye with some optional 719 features and cannot wait for it to arrive. I’m trading in my 21 1250RS, which is also a fantastic bike, but the riding position is not ideal for longer trips and these GSs are just so iconic. Look forward to the rest of your series!

      It arrived on Wednesday morning! Rode it to work, and been setting up my farkles as well as a new headlight protector. Mothers Day weekend here in US has held me back on a longer ride, but that will come. Noticeably taller ride height, looser steering, smaller turning radius, gentler ride, and more substantial road presence highlight the differences from the RS so far. Awaiting a touring windscreen.

    Nice review. Looking forward to the series. How did you convince the dealer to lend you a brand new bike for several weeks? It seems like it would significantly devalue the bike.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin, thank you. Dealerships sometimes need to register bikes at different times of the year to meet sales targets. This particular bike was in the showroom for several months, and its not the triple black version which is the No1 colour, and it does not have the SOS safety button option, so I guess on this occasion I was extremely lucky. Hi Andrew, thank you.
      I have asked the following question in the comments section in my Multistrada series but no one replied, which is fine. So I will ask / offer it again. I think it might be nice to offer subscribers the opportunity to have a picture of themselves and bike or just the bike... shown on the channel at the end of an episode. It would be free of course... but I think viewers might like to see what owners have done to their bikes, which in your case is an unusual colour option. Maybe it's not for everyone but I thought it would be nice. What do you think?
