I did the first oil and filter change on my 21 Taco at 1500 miles though toyota gives 2 free services. I prefer to do my own work as I know it is hard to find a reliable and knowledgeable person like you near me!
No fast lube tech will take the time to do a good job, it’s just volume for them. Your customers are very lucky to have you. If you ever visit Texas please look me up, my 1996 needs a complete inspection.
I still prefer the decades proven OEM spin on filter. Just tighten it hand tight with one hand and final small tightening with both hands. Worked for me for some 46 years now.
I have a 16 4-runner trail edition with 20k on the clock. I use it just to get the groceries. Now my 17 Tacoma now has 90 k on the clock and would love to bring it to you for maintenance but I’m in Denver Colorado. I love these videos. You do really nice work. Thank you for the videos.
Finally a 5th Gen! :). My first oil change after the Toyota included services, I had to use a breaker bar to remove the filter housing. It was insanely tight. I swapped it for a oem metal one (a common modification) and now at least I don’t fear breaking it. Found the dealer had also totally stripped a skid plate bolt and snapped another, you know, because dealer. 🤷🏻♂️
I found the dealer broke my skid plate bolts at the 1st oil change as well. Needless to say I had them replace the bolts which was a real pain for them.
That’s they way to go. I have an 07 Tubdra with a canister and now a ‘19 Tundra with that cartridge. I’m swapping out the plastic housing for an aluminum. No reason to over torque anyway. Silly oil techs that do this….good job guys!!
The first time I tried changing the oil on my 5th Gen, I broke 2 oil filter tools and then broke the plastic housing itself. I wasn’t able to get the housing off. I put fresh oil in, then drove it to a pro who could get the housing off. It was way tight. Fail!
I had almost the exact same experience. I swear, as I was reading your post I wondered if I had written this and forgot about it. In fact, I couldn’t get my housing off, even with all my strength. So, I’m taking it back to the dealer with a complaint.
Nicely detailed video. For those of you looking for tips for your first oil change... especially if, like myself, you do not have the means to lift your vehicle... I will add this: Get the skid plate out of your way, by first removing plastic shield. Yes, there is a plastic retaining pin holding the shield, unless someone already broke it! Disengage it by prying up center part with screwdriver, then the outer (main) part of pin can be pulled out. It remains connected to the shield. The metal skid plate can now be removed more easily. I used a flower pot to hold the plate up while I removed the screws. You can figure out the two hooks in front after the plate swings down. The drain plug washer did indeed stick to the pan... so tightly that I wasn't sure if I was scraping on the washer, or a raised lip of the pan itself. Discovered that the pan definitely is flush with the drain hole, after a pair of pliars finally worked the washer loose. The newly designed Motivx tool worked well on the filter canister, without engaging and potentially damaging the plastic fins. Good advice to use a torque wrench to reassemble, in my opinion.
Thanks for this additional info regarding the skid plate and the plastic panel. I only wish someone would do a video on proper removal of both so that I could easily slide underneath my fifth GEN to do the oil change at home while it yon ramps. Thank you again!!
Excellent video! Please more 5th Gen 4Runner vids if possible. Outstanding info given on this video! Any quick oil lube shop will never do a 4Runner oil change correctly. Listen to this video and ask yourself is my mechanic doing it like this because if so they are a good mechanic. The talent he shares and the ethics this mechanic has is top tier. Appreciate and watch every video you make. Thank you.
Amazing truck. Yeah I had a 98 third gen 4Runner with just under 100K miles on it and it still felt like a new vehicle everything was tight and quiet ran like a top.
@@thomasburr9244 I have a 2010 Toyota Camry 2.5L four cylinder with the 6 Speed Manual Transmission. I have 225, 711 on the clock. Runs so smooth. Just recently replaced the water pump and driver side wheel hub bearing. Other than normal maintenance, this car drives so well. I got a offer today Jan 7th 2022 from one of the mechanics at the dealership. I took it to the dealership to get an front end alignment after replacing that hub assembly bearing.
Always appreciate seeing things done correctly every step of the way. You sir know what you’re doing. I’ve watched many videos on how to do this job and not one showed how the skid plate was designed to just hang down🤙 Your explanation all along the way was very articulate and clear. Thanks very much for posting this. 😎
The skid plate is designed to hang down but it helps only if you have a lift , working with a floor Jack and Jack stands doesn’t give you much clearance, I have a 2017 sr5 and it helps removing both the plastic and metal skid plate out of the way
I just bought a new 23 four runner, plan to do my first oil change at 800km I always do my oil changes very early under light use as there is always minor metal wear in the first couple of changes. I keep my vehicles a long time, so the first few services are the most important. Just something I do and I never have had issues, plus maintenance for me is therapeutic kinda. Great video.
Thank you for this video. It will help me with my first oil change. I just purchased a 2024 Toyota 4runner off-road premium. and the dealership wants me to wait 10,000 miles before I change the oil for the first time which there’s no way I’m doing.
I don’t even own a Toyota 4Runner but I enjoy watching the oil change. Skid plates and that weird filter. I’d replace the plastic one with metal. 6.6 quarts, should stay clean for awhile. Now I want a 4Runner before they change the engine
I have a 1998 4runner 2.7 as my daily driver just turned 250,000. still doesn't use oil though I change every 3,000. it is the love of my life, after my wife & kids of course.
I cut the hangers off my 4Runners front skit. It’s easier to remove it entirely in my opinion. I have 140,000 and I’ve done at least 20 oil changes. I love my 5th gen 4runner.
I suspect those hangers are only present for those with a lift and swing it down for the oil change as demonstrated in the video. I guess there could be other reasons to swing it down but unlikely.
I have a 2021 4 runner Venture edition I will only take my truck to Toyota from now on. I did not realize the detail needed to change the oil on a 4 runner . No more quick lubes ... thank you for the detailed video
Last oil change on my 2019 4Runner Night Shade was at 15K. I purchased it for my wife in June of 2019 and she cannot drive anymore so it doesn't get driven often. I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD Offroad I purchased in July 2021 which has 975 miles on it. I have two vehicles that I have to alternate driving. The Tacoma is due first maintenance this month.
My 2020 (wife’s), and my 2021 4Runner get oil changed every 5k. First one was 1k on both also. I like the TRD oil filters, they are expensive but use the synthetic fiber.
thank u for demonstrating that stupid plastic part to drain the the filter. I finally bought a user freindly Motiv tool to neatly drain the filter without mess. Also bought a toyota OEM aluminum filter housing due to cracking plastic housing that was damaged at oil change outfit. Now I do all my own oil changes on 2008 sequoia 5.7
Even the Toyota techs at my local dealership over tightens the filter housing on my 2017 Tacoma. They cracked this housing on my brother's 4 Runner. We just change our own oil. The drain plug and filter housing need to be torqued to specs using a torque wrench or just snug to seat the o ring and drain plug gasket.
For those with this oil filter set up, there is a very specific location to index the filter wrench. It’s easy to think it’s indexed correctly when it is not. Triple check to avoid breaking it.
I have always been told to tighten a bolt or whatever to a specific "foot-pound" or "inch-pound" point. Peter says "millimeter", How do these two terms correspond?
I first learned of toyotas plastic housing filters on this gen 4runner. it's not bad but I do wish it just use a spin on filter so I could run a wix on it. this just takes a teeny bit longer and correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that metal arrow on the housing supposed to line up with the ridge on the oil filter housing. I always thought it was a dummy proof way to get it right without torque wrench. it pretty much bottoms out barely a 8th turn after it anyways so it's basically as tight as it needs to be anyways at that position. also that Toyota oil is made by ExxonMobil so if you wanted to save a bit of money. just buy a 0w20 Mobil 1 oil from Walmart or somewhere and thats as close as it gets to oem Toyota oil without costing a fortune. or use any other reputable 0w20 like Castrol edge or pennzoil platinum.
It's nice when a technician appreciates owner's immaculate care of their vehicle. So u know, 2019 Prius comes with canister like this, AND spin on filters. They go by ur VIN#. I wasnt sure which mine took & VIN determined it. Mine has spin on.👍 NOT a fan of plastic. That IS a nice 🚚 truck. Happy New Year!
Yes, missing center plastic push pin from the front splash shield in front of the front skid plate. I changed my oil filter lower housing out for aluminum. Many owners end up having the plastic housing crack. I also installed a fumoto quick drain on my oil pan for easy draining without jacking or lifting in my driveway.
That is a super nice 4Runner and it's a TRD. Those filter drains never ever come off for me. They are stuck solid. I wish they are as useful as Toyota planned. I even put the metal canister in a vice and gave it all the beans, nothing, wouldn't budge
It is not a TRD sub model, it just has TRD wheels. It’s an SR5 model. You can determine this by the side plate at 25 seconds into the video, plus it does not have TRD Pro skid plates or shocks.
Great video! I'm biased of course loving my 2018 4runner. So true on the oil filter housing, so many techs over tighten! I notice many images online people also align the metal tab on the filter housing, after its already tight with the drivers side "tab" on the casting. I've always aligned it with the tab on the passengers side and its been plenty tight, no leaks now I wonder if I’m too tight or too loose, no leaks so far and definitely past hand right. Keep up the amazing videos!
It is cheaper for Toyota to make, since metal is more expensive than paper, and a couple of rubber O rings. A steel screw on oil filter has several parts which are machined, and have to be assembled liquid tight. Then they have to paint it. The steel ones are bigger and heavier to ship too. So the Toyota ones are better for Toyota's profit margin, and for the environment.
If you have trouble getting the oil filter housing loosened, you can try a 24mm socket and the filter wrench instead of the 3/8" extension. Also it helps if the engine is warm too versus cold.
24 mm?? oh and i just gave up, couldnt budge it with car on ramps. Did oil tho. so guess its the oil change guys tomorrow for filter that i have. hope theyll do it for $20 lol
When it comes to oil, 0W20 from any of the major brands should work equally well as the Toyota brand. I would imagine that Exxon or one of the other major companies manufactures it for Toyota.
Very nice job with details explained. What is your opinion on the Baxter converter unit so you can use spin on filters? I understand you might need to cut a hole in skid plate to accommodate extra length of adapter/filter.
So just had a 2014 4Runner with the same issue, which the dealer mechanic severely over torqued to the point of insanity. Needless to say that the plastic housing broke, had to order new Assy. # 15620-31060 genuine part (metal). Used original plug which was still good.
On my '18 SR5 Prem.... replaced the plastic filter housing with the Toyota aluminum version, also replaced all the fasteners with stainless steel (ACE Hdwr had them all) as in my climate the fasteners become rusted and hard to remove, even though I use Never-Cease on all of them. My $.02
It doesn't matter on the oil filter, I torque mine to spec but it is always hell to remove. I think it is the composite, I am going to try a metal one.
I just did my 2017 tacoma oil change last week ,4 days later filter housing was leaking into the skid plate, o ring was broken when I removed it to look at it,had to do the whole oil and filter change all over again, cost me $60 each, twice in one week, bad design I think
I bought a new 2019 4runner and brought it in around 6500 miles for their free maintenance..........They actually did nothing except "inspect". I asked what about and oil change and he said no need for 10,000 miles and that I was old school. I asked what's more important miles or engine run time? No response. Took it home, changed the oil myself and will never go back unless something under warranty fails. I change it every ~5k or so. Oil is cheap compared to an engine.
Same thing happened to me under the Toyota Care program. I just changed mine at 5k and 15k then let Toyota perform the oil changes at 10k and 20k. It’s too bad that air filter replacements are not even part of the Toyota Care program.
I think a lot of over torquing beliefs come from how the heat over time seems to make the oil filters tighter and harder to get off. I have been doing my own oil and always tighten to spec but after 5k that filter is always a pain to get off on any vehicle me or my wife own.
I had purchased a non OEM filter for my Camry. The plastic drain tool was threaded. So you screwed it in instead of having to push it in. Much easier to do.
I did my Tundra oil change two times last year. I've owned it five years and had oils changes done at the dealer, but $85 for a dealer to change it versus $55 for two 5 quart jugs of Mobile 1 and a filter, I'm gonna save where I can. But those pesky oil filter housing are a bitch, I found that if they don't wet the O-rings with oil and over torque the housing they suck to get off. But ever since I've been oiling the O-ring and torqueing it to the right amount, they're way easier to get off.
Any idea what would cause an oil light flicker only on the freeway after 60mph? The engine oil level is fine. Car model: 2005 Scion tC Manual transmission with 129k miles.
Hey guy 👋. I have a 2015 Toyota Tundra crewmax 5.7 4x4. I am having a front end shimmy around 55-70 mph. On and off not steady. The tires are new and a front end alignment plus tire balanced with road force has been done. The problem is still there a mechanic said everything is tight and looking good up front. What could it be?
Thank you Peter. Very helpful. Good advice as always. Time for a Kraut break here in Cold New York. Hello to the beautiful California coast. :) Peter It's O DOM IT ER :) Bratwurst on toasted bun with mustard and Kraut !!!
Hello Peter. I always learn something from your videos, even an oil change one. The screw in funnel is a new one on me. Is that available only at Toyota dealer, or tool truck item?
No oil in the filter housing before re-installation; is this not an issue on first restart? Great channel, have learned much, do all my own maintenance, RX 350 F Sport
The funny thing is if owners take their 4 Runners to a quick lube place for sure they won't replace the filter given the additional steps to get to it. Even the dealer techs might skip out who knows.
these days when I shop for new (used) cars, some of the things I avoid are interference engines with belts, these new style of oil filters, and TPMS sensors.
I’ve never been so interested in a simple oil change. Such a shame Toyota moved to the canister oil filter. I love the simple cartridge filter on the 1GR-FE in my taco. No need to remove skid plates either. C’mon Toyota, keep things simple!
@@CH-jq7xg no kidding?! I put the TRD skid on my wife’s 2020, so it’s the same, take it off every time. My 2021 I have KDSS, so I have RCI skid plates and a small door. That would have been nice to have a dedicated easy way to take the filter out. Way cool.
Whatever happened to good old metal spin on filters? The cannister filters were used on cars in the 50’s and ere always a mess to change! Now they are back! Why?
I own 2019 4Runner. When changing oil filter is one of the stupid thing Toyota engineers designed error. All they have have to do is make a door for easy access. Why they have a door access for oil plug and can't make one for oil filter housing?
I bought a 2019 Highlander even though I wanted a 4Runner. The 4Runner's steering wheel was to far to the left and my shoulder was smashed up against the door.
Newest Toyotas use 0/16W motor oil. So can 0/20W be used in it's place forever? Manuel says replace with proper wt oil on next change if 0/20W was used! I use Kirkland oil and 0/16W is not sold yet. Thanks for your opinion!

A steel screw on oil filter has several parts which are machined, and have to be assembled liquid tight. Then they have to paint it. The steel ones are bigger and heavier to ship too. So the Toyota ones are better for Toyota's profit margin, and for the environment.
The reason they went to this is 2010 + now have oil coolers way better for your engine
Awesome video. Thank you from Nova Scotia.
Wow first time watching you you made it so easy and such a nice experience love it thank you very muchhhh
I expect there is a Toyota Cast Aluminum oil filter housing for the plastic one .
I’m considering a 2022 TRD Pro... I always do my own maintenence. Thanks for the video and torque specs.

Outstanding job and video
Someone send Peter a Toyota Oscar
Given the high price of the 4 runner why doesn’t Toyota use stainless steel in their exhaust systems? Nice job on the oil change.
Possibly because of the high price of the 4Runner.
Good question
Its a 7 or $800 option at the factory
@@gregambrose2566 there is no such an option
@@Tahara-Aichi I just ordered a 22 4runner trd a couple weeks ago and I included it. $799 option.
I love my 4Runner!
I suggest you use RAVENOL ECS 0W-20 oil. It is better than the original Toyota. It has PAO and ESTER base, you will feel the difference.
Mobil 1 oil in a Toyota container!!!
Definitely a Toyota Flagship vehicle🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
Very nice job with details explained.
What is your opinion on the Baxter converter unit so you can use spin on filters?
I understand you might need to cut a hole in skid plate to accommodate extra length of adapter/filter.
So just had a 2014 4Runner with the same issue, which the dealer mechanic severely over torqued to the point of insanity. Needless to say that the plastic housing broke, had to order new Assy. # 15620-31060 genuine part (metal). Used original plug which was still good.
Nice video
My oil filter (04152-YZZA5), does not come with drain plug washer.
What part # did you order?
On my '18 SR5 Prem.... replaced the plastic filter housing with the Toyota aluminum version, also replaced all the fasteners with stainless steel (ACE Hdwr had them all) as in my climate the fasteners become rusted and hard to remove, even though I use Never-Cease on all of them. My $.02
It doesn't matter on the oil filter, I torque mine to spec but it is always hell to remove. I think it is the composite, I am going to try a metal one.
On my 2010 Toyota Camry, I replace the black plastic oil filter canister with the metal Toyota oil filter canister. The metal one is a better.
An advantage is you won’t damage the grooves on the block from over tightening. Plastic will break before you damage the block.
@@Offshore1977 Toyota doesn't have the oil filter housing attached to the block. Generally it's either bolted on or it's part of the upper oil pan
Thanks Peter for interesting video, have a great day.
Happy new year from Canada 🇨🇦
Hello, thank you for your videos, I have a 5th generation 4runner, do you recommend the 1st oil change at 1k miles? Or 5k miles?
Great Work Peter 😎
Thanks for sharing this video, very 👍
Another informative video Peter. Great job.
Much easier to do.
check out Motiv tool for the future . those plastic ones suck

You are throughout, detailed! Thanks for good video
Always appreciate your videos 👍👍
Peter It's O DOM IT ER :)
Bratwurst on toasted bun with mustard and Kraut !!!
Hello Peter. I always learn something from your videos, even an oil change one.
The screw in funnel is a new one on me.
Is that available only at Toyota dealer, or tool truck item?
Widemouth Mobil 1 oil quart bottles will thread right in. Cut an empty one in half for a free funnel.
No oil in the filter housing before re-installation; is this not an issue on first restart? Great channel, have learned much, do all my own maintenance, RX 350 F Sport
Nope.
The funny thing is if owners take their 4 Runners to a quick lube place for sure they won't replace the filter given the additional steps to get to it. Even the dealer techs might skip out who knows.
Is there enough room to place a Baxter conversion for spin on filter?
these days when I shop for new (used) cars, some of the things I avoid are interference engines with belts, these new style of oil filters, and TPMS sensors.
a very small pool of not too old candidates....Good luck!
You're the best, love your video.
Wouldn't you think the oil is doing it job, if it is dirty? The oil acted as Cleaner and lubrication at the same time.
What are your thoughts on the fumoto valves?
I’ve never been so interested in a simple oil change. Such a shame Toyota moved to the canister oil filter. I love the simple cartridge filter on the 1GR-FE in my taco. No need to remove skid plates either. C’mon Toyota, keep things simple!
New 2022 skid plate has a cut out that can be removed with two bolts that allow easy access to the filter cartridge. Only took 7 years to do it.
@@CH-jq7xg no kidding?! I put the TRD skid on my wife’s 2020, so it’s the same, take it off every time. My 2021 I have KDSS, so I have RCI skid plates and a small door. That would have been nice to have a dedicated easy way to take the filter out. Way cool.
That 3rd bolt in in 4Runner is also missing…The one in the middle holding the skid plate up…Is it a bolt or a fastener ?
The middle bolt is missing on the plastic. I Have the same year 3 bolts is unnecessary
Torque values: oil pan drain plug, 30 ft-lbs. Oil filter housing, 18 ft-lbs. Oil filter housing drain plug, 10 ft-lbs.
Bet you performed the first filter change
Fun fact: Toyota 4runners are all still built in Japan. That matters to me....so I bought one :D
Do you have a shop? If so may I know where?
Whatever happened to good old metal spin on filters? The cannister filters were used on cars in the 50’s and ere always a mess to change! Now they are back! Why?
I own 2019 4Runner. When changing oil filter is one of the stupid thing Toyota engineers designed error. All they have have to do is make a door for easy access. Why they have a door access for oil plug and can't make one for oil filter housing?
I bought a 2019 Highlander even though I wanted a 4Runner. The 4Runner's steering wheel was to far to the left and my shoulder was smashed up against the door.
Yes very detail however mentioning the size of the tools is good
Sir you are like Bob Ross changing oil.
Do you ever service Lexus vehicles?
My ears thank you for not using the impact wrench 😊
Newest Toyotas use 0/16W motor oil. So can 0/20W be used in it's place forever? Manuel says replace with proper wt oil on next change if 0/20W was used! I use Kirkland oil and 0/16W is not sold yet. Thanks for your opinion!
0w-20 won’t hurt a bit. The thinner oils are for CAFE standards only.
Nope …. 4Runners call for 0W20…. This is true for all 5th Generation 4Runners … 2010 to present. All have the 4.0 L V6. Not 0W16.
@@stevebrackett2676 Many new MODELS call for 0W-16wt! But thanks for the info.
@@ibbob31 0w20 is actually better for the engine
