This video teaches a bigger lesson than just how to do a proper oil change. I made the rookie mistake of letting dealership do my 10k oil change because it was free.... and they did the same exact thing to my oil filter housing. Those guys are NOT mechanics. Real mechanics get paid well and dealerships aren't about to pay a real salary to a trained mechanic. I needed my biggest impact on highest setting to get it off. they will never ever EVER touch my 4runner again. for anything. Ive installed Fumoto valve as well. love it. Great video... with the proper investment in tools, oil changes can, and should, be done at home with care and pride.
Informative video! I changed my oil in my 4Runner for the first-time last month. I had the two-year Toyota maintenance. I will never take my vehicle to my Toyota dealership again. They rounded off one of the bolts on the skid plate. Took me forever to get that bolt off. They did not install the crush washer on the oil drain plug. One of the O rings on the oil filter was missing. I don't understand why dealerships are like that.

The was the cleanest oil change I have seen better than what I have done, even at the dealership sorry no Toyota dealership and I never over tighten the drain plug or oil filter or even torque on wheels. Love your channel Jason. Awesome job sir.
Bro, the dealer did the same thing on my 4runner. I completed the first 3 oil changes with no problem and got lazy and let the dealer do one. On my 5th i ended up breaking the plastic oil filter housing because of how tight it was. I ended up putting the metal one from the camry and needless to say never going back to the dealer unless i have to.
i have the Fumoto valve, and it makes the oil change process so much easier. while this was not a spotless oil change, its a good practice run so the next one will be spotless.
My wife’s car was at the dealership for a warranty oil leak repair, they also changed the oil under the procedure, the next time I did an oil change I literally twisted the metal on the oil filter getting it off, needless to say there was a few choice words said while I was doing this lol, I also use a metal garage floor drip pan when I do my oil changes, it keeps any drips off the floor, great video Jason 👍😁
It just makes draining oil easier and cleaner. Also you don't need to replace the gasket each time anymore. You can see it in action in my 30K mile maintenance video.
Nice instructional video. As a boat engine mechanic, I use a pump to suck the oil out of the crankcase through the dipstick tube. I am not sure about that oil pan valve, but that is me. I have had to remove engines because people over tightened oil filters, or don't lubricate the o-ring.
Omg Jason. I had the same issue with my over torqued oil filter housing. I was also going to my local toyota dealer for oil changes. From that point own I told my self I will do my oil changes from now on. Excellent video!
Nice job bro! I always do the same and strive for zero spillage. One thing you might consider is to add your Techron a couple full fill ups before your oil change because its use adds some contaminate to the oil, that way you get them out with the dirty oil and start out fresh.
Well done video. Definitely have to do these oil changes yourself. The dealerships have over torqued or have crossthread my 4runner. If you off road or overland use 91 octane 😊
There are at least 4 companies that make quick 'drain valves' for vehicles. All seem to work equally well, per comments on each site. I just recd my ValvoMax drain valve and chose it because for my Rav4, it had the shortest exterior stem and so it will fit fine, with my splash shield in place..and it comes with 2ndary safety drain metal cap to assure no leakage ever once in place. Amazon also sells a collapsable clear plastic jug, called the DRAIN MATE that accepts oil thru the tube drain, holds about 5qts of oil and once filled with used oil, you just cap the jug and carry it /empty it in any nearby Car Parts store....so cant wait to do my own oil soon ..as it will be the first 'no mess' (virtually) since I have ever done vehicle oil changes 🙂
Dealerships employees used a impact gun on mine too. I had to use a breaker bar and the leg to tire . Also they broke my cabin filter door clips . Good luck getting them.to admit what they did .
Jason - Thank you for taking the time to record the video and compile the needed information. I recently purchased a 2024 4Runner and, given 1st hand experience with an oil change gone bad, I decided to perform my break-in oil change at 785 miles. One issue I had was determining the torque specification for the oil filter housing. Most sites are telling me 18 ft. lbs. but you stated in your video that the housing needed to be torqued to 22 pounds. Interestingly, I looked on the housing itself which indicates a tightening torque of 25 NM which equals 18.44 Ft. lbs. Would you mind telling us where you found this information? -Thanks
I couldn’t think of a clever enough insult, so I asked ChatGPT and it didn’t disappoint: "You've got a talent for making even the Exxon Valdez incident look like a minor spill."
Yep. Hurt my back. Took my 4 Runner to a Toyota only specialist shop. Next oil change, it took an impact AND a friend with an oil filter strap wrenching on it to get it loose.
Going to start doing those on my GX460, as it seems to sound a little funny after last oil change at our local Toyota dealership. Hopefully the steps are similar, never done an oil change 😬
Vladm, watch several videos on how to do an oil change. Maybe watch some on how to do a Toyota Sequoia, or GX460. It’s not difficult, but the more familiar you become, the easier it is. Best of luck! 😊
I had the same problem with my housing I couldn't get it off, I just left it on and didn't replace the filter. Will try again next go around with my impact.
I "personally" prefer to use a Universal 3-arm Oil Filter Socket (like what is sold everywhere) for my various vehicles. You should talk to the Maintenance Lead at the Dealership about the "over torquing" of your bits! With over torquing comes thread failure. Do they really want to replace an Oil Pan on their dime?

great job, but it would have been perfect it those jack leg techs before you didn't over tighten the oil filter. I agree with you do it yourself, and it will get done right.
Hi Jason, LOVE your channel. I drive a Tacoma TRD OR but I have been thinking about trading for a 4Runner ORP due to leg room and small kids. I would LOVE to see you do an id-depth Comparison between the two. I love the Tacoma but I think I will like the 4Runner better. I dont know! THANKS!
Both are fantastic. If I were to say which is "best" I would slightly lean towards the 4Runner. It seems a bit better made. Yes it has much more room for passengers. I love the 4L engine. Negatives... it gets worse gas mileage than a Taco, and it's wider and therefore a bit harder to park and avoid scratches while off-road. But I love both.
Lol just did the oil change on my tundra and all bolts were way over torque, drain plug, oil filter housing and the 2 screws that hold the plate/door on the rci skid to get to the oil filter. Sadly 1 screw on the skid plate got stripped from how tight it was. Thanks to the dealership they were the last ones to work on my truck.
I know you said the dealership likely over torqued with an impact but hear me out, I recently did my own oil change on my 2017 Jetta, hand loosened and then hand tightened new oil filter. Didn't need a wrench. 10,000 miles later I also do my next oil change myself. I go to hand loosen the filter and I could not get it off for the life of me. I spent the next 2 hours giving it so much Hercules strength my forearms were sore for the next 5 days. Ended up stabbing the side of the filter with a screwdriver (not recommended for white floor challenges) and using that as extra leverage to turn, even that was incredibly difficult to remove. Moral of the story I wonder if certain driving conditions like extreme heat (Florida) made the filter so hard to get off. Or maybe your dealership still over torqued your rig.
I know they can get stuck… but not to this degree. I have zero doubt in my mind they installed it with an impact. Every single oil change I’ve done on my Toyotas or a family member’s never has this issue if I did the previous oil change.
what if the oil filter was appropiatly installed with a torque wrench? but the mechanic didn't decontaminate the oil from the Threads, so it skewed the torque value. it happens! especially with oil plugs! but yes, if you are going to be using a torque wrench on a fastener, it must not be contaminated with anything especially lubricant. (unless the procedure specifically calls for it, like with head bolts)
I have seen videos where the "pre fill" the oil filter prior to installing. But that was with a fully enclosed oil filter. I saw a YT video where a oil expert (I believe he has some type of chemical engineering degree or something and worked for a well know race team) show why it is important to pre fill the oil filter. Do you think this would apply to this Toyota filter? About to do my first oil change on my 4Runner. Thanks for the great video!!!
I have two 4Runners - and I pre-fill the canister (once the paper filter is installed) with about 6 oz of oil (guesstimate). You have to add slowly - as it takes time for the oil to settle in, and also to avoid overfilling. Of course once you have added oil into the canister, then make sure you keep it all level all the way until you screw it in. Adding the oil cannot hurt - but most likely helps with engine longevity.
Wait! Since you are using a torque wrench for preciseness, the oil filter canister isn't it suppose to be 25Nm (or just about 20 ft-lbs, NOT 22 ft-lbs) with the drain cap torqued to 12.5 Nm (NOT 10 ft-lbs).... well as for the drain plug torqued to 30 ft-lbs with a new (supposedly Toyota Blue) gasket. Lastly, I would suggest using fuel system cleaner a couple of tanks before the oil change rather than after. Thanks for the video and read my $0.00002
my dealer cranked the oil filter housing so tight that the oil filter wrench just spinned without moving the housing, I need something that locks into the tabs on the housing
If you didn't have such dainty arms, that oil filter cap would have come off without any issues. Get to the gym, Daisy! (You asked for insults . . .?). But seriously, thanks for the video. I haven't changed oil for more than a decade (and 30-years worth of vehicle years, plus all of the vehicles I changed oil on were domestic), and things are a little different these days. I ordered the gear off of amazon through your links, etc., but I'm going with Mobil1 oil, though. Thanks again!
Thanks for the great video. Amazon is saying that oil filter housing wrench won’t fit my 2024 4 Runner. What’s the deal ? Also that oil filter housing looks like a replacement but Amazon is saying it also won’t fit the 2024 4Runner. Help ! Ditto with that awesome funnel.
I believe the Fumoto valve comes with a gasket. And you don’t need to replace it unless you remove the valve… which you don’t unless you want to go back to a regular plug.
Jason, I have a 23 SR5P, approaching 10k miles. Should I take my 4Runner to Toyota for the free oil change? Or just buy the materials and do it at home?
That's up to you Sir. I'm sure many dealerships are fine. Mine keeps doing stuff like this to me, my friends and my family. It really stinks. FYI... I'd recommend oil changes every 5K instead of 10k if you plan on keeping the 4Runner long term. Here's a great video on the topic: th-cam.com/video/TevK-u3vkx4/w-d-xo.html
I had the same issue with my last Toyota care oil change, I had a metal oil tool that broke while trying to take off. I will not be taking my car to the dealer
I'm obviously not a scientist... so I'd direct you to their website for info. One thing I'll say for sure is the fuel treatment does have some fuel stabilization properties. I put the high mileage version of Techron in my VW Beetle's gas tank. When I went to start it 5-6 months later after the winter it started almost immediately.
We couldn't get the oil filter off. Plastic cover. We made the tool slip it was so tight. Taking back to the dealership for the next change make them try and remove it. How many quarts need without changing the filter?
That sucks! I’d recommend just putting in a quart less than what was shown here and using the dipstick to finalize the amount. FYI… the Motivx tool is made from a single block of aluminum and likely wouldn’t snap in half. I had to use a 1/2” impact as you saw and it held.
Walmart for sure. I’ve also seen it at Napa and Amazon. If you’re in the northwest I’ve also seen Havoline at Bimart. But probably the best price is at Walmart.
From the FTC: You don’t have to use the dealer for repairs or maintenance to keep your warranty in effect. In fact, it’s illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage because you had routine maintenance or repairs done by someone else. consumer.ftc.gov/articles/auto-warranties-and-auto-service-contracts
You can recycle old oil at a variety of places. I know many auto parts stores offer that service for free (Orielly's for one). Also at your local dump/transfer station there's usually an area to recycle used motor oil.
During my last free oil change on my 4Runner, the dealership cross threaded a bolt on my skid plate. I took it back to them and made them re-tap the hole and give me a new bolt. And like you, the filter housing was a bear to remove. I do my own maintenance now.
Using a torque wrench. You set the desired torque spec on the wrench. As you’re tightening the torque wrench will click when you’ve tightened it that amount.
An impact is a great way to get a stuck filter off. Worked many times on many vehicles. If you can see the entire engine was moving while I was trying to get it loose… going harder could’ve broken where the filter housing screws in. Go ahead and think I’m dumb if you want. Just give it a try if you’re ever in the same scenario and thank me then. 👍
Um, you can if you want. With a slight lift I don't need to. Even with a stock 4Runner you can squeeze in there. But feel free to lift it if you want. Just make sure it's on level ground when you set your final oil level with the dipstick.
Hilariously... a short clipped from this is going bananas. th-cam.com/users/shortsEVoS8ymag7I?feature=share

my dealer cranked the oil filter housing so tight that the oil filter wrench just spinned without moving the housing, I need something that locks into the tabs on the housing
The older version of Motivx’s wrench grabs on to the tabs.

I watched one of your oil change videos a while back and you used Kirkland brand oil from Costco...do you still recommend it?
Both are great. Havoline is a channel sponsor so I use that now. But the Kirkland stuff is a quality option as well.
Nice! Can't go wrong with Mobil1 either. I believe they do a similar cardboard box as well for recycling.
How many OZ presentation was that fuel cleaner?
Thanks for the great video. Amazon is saying that oil filter housing wrench won’t fit my 2024 4 Runner. What’s the deal ?
Also that oil filter housing looks like a replacement but Amazon is saying it also won’t fit the 2024 4Runner. Help !
Ditto with that awesome funnel.
It will. All 5th gen 4Runners use the same thing.
@@JasonExplainsThings Thank you, God bless.
If you are using the Fumoto, do you still need the Toyota Oil Drain Plug Gasket?
Thanks for the info! Keep up the great work.
I had the same issue with my last Toyota care oil change, I had a metal oil tool that broke while trying to take off. I will not be taking my car to the dealer
That sucks. I’d recommend the Motivx tool. Very strong/USA made.
And… yeah dealerships that use impacts are so ridiculous. It takes all of a few seconds to do it correctly.
Do you know what we’re supposed to torque down the skid plate to?
How do you get that vehicle maintenence option in the menu? My '23 has the set up and vehicle option but not maintenence option
Hey I couldn’t remove the little one on the oil filter so I just left it you think it’s ok?
Does that fuel system cleaner actually work?
I'm obviously not a scientist... so I'd direct you to their website for info. One thing I'll say for sure is the fuel treatment does have some fuel stabilization properties. I put the high mileage version of Techron in my VW Beetle's gas tank. When I went to start it 5-6 months later after the winter it started almost immediately.
They work if you use them religiously. I prefer to use them 1,000 miles prior to the oil change.
Just dealt with an over torqued oil filter on my Toyota from the dealership... 🙃
Do you go to the parts dept at the stealership for the oem stuff or can you get it online?
Online.

So Jason, where are you able to order the Havoline oil? Walmart seems to be out of stock on them. Are there any other stores that we can find it?
Walmart for sure. I’ve also seen it at Napa and Amazon. If you’re in the northwest I’ve also seen Havoline at Bimart. But probably the best price is at Walmart.
Y’all torque your filters??? I’ve been giving it the ol 2 uga dugas and call it square 😂
That works too. 😁
With the Fumoto valve, do you ever need to change out the washer since you will not be removing like a drainplug?
I don't think so.
No need, you won't ever remove it after installing it. Just use a new one on and you are good to go.
How to remove the housing filter clockwise or counter? Ty
Righty-tighty lefty-loosy 👍
@@JasonExplainsThings Ty I’m always watching your blog
What did you use to get off the oil filter housing metal plug?
3/8” extension. Or you can just use a 3/8 ratchet.
@@JasonExplainsThings thanks!
Does doing your own oil change void the warranty? Thanks
From the FTC: You don’t have to use the dealer for repairs or maintenance to keep your warranty in effect. In fact, it’s illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage because you had routine maintenance or repairs done by someone else.

@@JasonExplainsThings thanks for the response. Looking at getting my 1st 4Runner hopefully this week. Definitely subscribed!
What are the tool for the drill???
Do you mean the oil filter housing wrench? It’s in the description.
How to dispose the old oil?
You can recycle old oil at a variety of places. I know many auto parts stores offer that service for free (Orielly's for one). Also at your local dump/transfer station there's usually an area to recycle used motor oil.
@@JasonExplainsThings sounds good. Thank you for your answer.
I watched the video! You failed on your white floor challenge.
I'm sorry Nate! I failed the challenge. I deserve shame and ridicule.
@@JasonExplainsThings You not only brought shame to yourself but also your family! How dare you!
During my last free oil change on my 4Runner, the dealership cross threaded a bolt on my skid plate. I took it back to them and made them re-tap the hole and give me a new bolt. And like you, the filter housing was a bear to remove. I do my own maintenance now.
Oh yah 0/20 is so thick we need to get it hot before it flows freely. Then we can burn ourselves draining the oil.
I am not a fan of oil change valves.
It just takes one stick to snag it and its over.
Stupid question- how can you tell how many foot-pounds of torque you're applying?
Using a torque wrench. You set the desired torque spec on the wrench. As you’re tightening the torque wrench will click when you’ve tightened it that amount.
Brilliant! @@JasonExplainsThings
Also that Vader clip made me legit laugh haha @@JasonExplainsThings
Mine was over torqued also 😡
I thought the impact on the oil filter was a bit but I guess not..........
It wouldn’t budge without it. Honestly blew my mind.
Bro used an impact for the filter 😂
An impact is a great way to get a stuck filter off. Worked many times on many vehicles. If you can see the entire engine was moving while I was trying to get it loose… going harder could’ve broken where the filter housing screws in. Go ahead and think I’m dumb if you want. Just give it a try if you’re ever in the same scenario and thank me then. 👍
👍🏻
He didn’t show him removing the oil filter, he cut to the work table. Not convinced
A conspiracy! 😱
Toyota dealerships make sure u cannot take them off😅😅😅
We have the technology! 😂 That little section went viral on Facebook. Weird times.
report it to Toyota, sent a letter
You don’t need to jack it up? Sorry noob
Um, you can if you want. With a slight lift I don't need to. Even with a stock 4Runner you can squeeze in there. But feel free to lift it if you want. Just make sure it's on level ground when you set your final oil level with the dipstick.
Amsoil only oil to buy ever
You do you. 👍
