    This is a detailed sound review or shoot out on 4 pressings of the White Stripes Elephant. The OG released in 2003, the new 20th anniversary repress from Thirdman Records, the Mono XX Vault #53, and the brand new UHQR 45 RPM edition from ‪@acousticsoundsks‬ I also have Felipe from the ‪@JazzBums‬ join me - since he was so kind to send me his OG copy to compare - since he is a huge fan of the White Stripes - I wanted to bring him in on and talk about the music and the pressings.

    You tricked me when I saw using the UHQR as a frisbee almost, I was going to stop watching, later I understood the trick. Great way in reviewing these albums. I have the UHQR and one reissue in black from 2022, no sibilance on mine, but for sure the UHQR is the winner for me. Having Felipe on your show is an excellent idea, I was really impressed w/ his depth of knowledge w/ the White Stripes, plus his kindness, we need more people like him. Very good video, thanks for sharing!

    Fun video, thanks! Agree with Felipe on James Brown!
    My choice for UHQR would be Soundgarden “Superunknown”. None of the “affordable” reissues on vinyl sound that great in fidelity.
    A couple of points:
    IMO, volume level matching with a decibel meter is paramount to A/B’ing records in comparison tests.
    Also, if they went back to the multi’s then the mono Elephant is a true mono not a fold down.
    Thanks again for the video!

    You're not wrong about the sibilance. I bought the 20 year 33rpm version that is clear w/ Red & Black Smoke. I also had to clean it, my first listen on side a was very poppy. After a clean on the Spin Clean it sounds so much better. That sibilance is strong.

    seeing the knife go across the record killed me. but overall i bought the 20th anniversary and got the uhqr as a gift and i wholeheartedly agree with everything said here. i don't have as high end of a system as you but i can hear the difference between the two. the minute i played the 20 anniversary and heard the sibilance on sna i got so disconnected immediately and i couldn't not hear it. the uhqr is definitely a joy to hear and hold! i think it's awesome that they were able to cut the same songs on the same sides as the 33 record at 45. i think that's so cool and unique. great video man!

      I have plenty of records that are flawless, completely silent background and they weren't advertised as premium audiophile pressings and they didn't cost a fortune, if I'm paying the price of these UHQRs I expect them to be totally silent.

    Is it confirmed that the original (UK or US) were even cut all analog? Or is that being assumed. Jack didn’t really start getting into producing AAA vinyl until the post-2010 reissues IIRC. He’s even made statements that he couldn’t hear the difference, even after SH/KG cuts of Icky 😮. I think people romanticize many modern OGs that are cut from digital files. Just curious…I’ve been trying to find information myself as a curious fan.

    • @PiecesofVinyl
      @PiecesofVinyl  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the video that debuted the announcement showed the original master tape (from acousticounds) so I’m pretty sure it was recorded to tape. If the OG went through an all analog process for its debut in 2003 i am not sure.

    Your description of the 20th anniversary, "surface noise is more like a crackle, which adds a little nostalgia".... your 'hipster' side is really showing, good grief!
    I was buying records over 50 years ago and then when a record had "crackle" or too much other noise it was not considered normal... in fact, as with now, back then noisy records were not a good thing and not common... just poorly pressed or from recycled vinyl.
    I have 4 versions of this album, the first 3 are poor copies, the 4th will be the UHQR when it arrives... all in the same condition in which I bought them when new, but, Thirdman does NOT put a lot of care in where or how their records are pressed.
    1). I have the White/Red OG pressed at United Record Pressing, which was probably the worse pressing plant in the country... and this version sounds it... very noisy, lots of pops ticks, sibilance galore!
    2). The 2021 Pallas pressing is a big improvement in vinyl quality... but the sibilance issues are still there.
    3.) The 2023 20th Anniversay, pressed at ThirdMan, is probably the worst of the 3, but is somewhat close to the OG in noise and sibilance.
    I can't stand the sibilance, noise and other manufacturing distortions, so none of the White Stripes albums get played very often... and I have all of them, multiple pressings of each.
    I would say what versions I do have, the Pallas pressings and Kevin Gray cut versions are the only ones played.
    In my opinion, ThirdMan has followed suit of United Record Pressing in being one of the worst pressing plants in the country/world for quality.... I only buy something they press when it is an absolute must.
    I don't find "crackle", pops, clicks, non-fill zip and sibilance "nostalgic"... I almost always return records with these traits unless there is no choice.
    When people tolerate such poor quality standards, they continue, so I usually spend my $$ elsewhere.

    • @PiecesofVinyl
      @PiecesofVinyl  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My preference and owned copy is the UHQR which I i have returned because of three or four pops on the entire album. I can’t stand any noise at all. It should be dead silent….but….some people that watch can’t and will never want or own the UHQR and a lot of people will own the 20th reissue so the line about the crackle being tolerable is to assure casual folks they can be fine with their $30 purchase. But if you want a dead silent sibilant free copy go for the UHQR. Thanks for watching!

  • @reallyhappytrees
    @reallyhappytrees 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm flabbergasted that you diagonally knife-cut that uhqr record, meanwhile you justified it by hearing one pop?... i'm actually sickened by such a distorted mentality.. unless i've been trolled.
    In which i think both cases would be considered trolling.

    • @PiecesofVinyl
      @PiecesofVinyl  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There were numerous pops on a couple tracks. Acoustic sounds will replace it for you - but you have to destroy the record and show them the proof. This is a $170 record after tax and shipping and they claim the clarity vinyl is the absolute best - so yeah - I give them no room for error at all. No slight warps/pops/clicks. I will continue to send it back until it’s right. This time it only took one round. For other uhqrs they have come in perfect - my miles Davis 45rpm took 5 rounds to get a flat disc two. If this was a $30 record - no problem. They want to be best - gotta have the QC. And they usually do and if not they will replace it. Good service to me!

      @@PiecesofVinyl thanks for the reply. sorry if i missed it when i viewed, but did you do any vacuum cleaning? warping is nothing fun to deal with, i know that. i just feel there are better ways to deal with it, rather than destroying it completely.. record revirginizer etc. thanks for the vid and response! cheers, and happy listening!
