Hopefully these Bowie tapes will be released in a boxed set soon. Bowie's core audience is around 60 to 70 years old. The generation that STILL prefers and purchases physical media. However- time is of the essence.
Yep that’s me! I’m very aware that my time is now limited along with others so it’s imperative that they get this stuff released to us as soon as possible. Same goes for the 78 tour David Hemming’s film. When old timers like me shuffle off will there really be the same appetite for this from the next generation apart from those who are actuality into music history. 🤔
@Wishful-Thinking The younger generations will stream the stuff for free or download the files. The music industry has less than 20 years to provide lifelong physical media collectors with the stuff they really want. Look at the new list of Rolling Stones best albums of this century: a Beyonce album tops the list. I am 60 years old, all my spare income goes into my music collection, and I would never dream of purchasing a Beyonce recording. I honestly could not name even one song by her. The music industry needs to develop and maintain departments for classic artists, and get the unheard material to the remaining fans. I don't expect them to do it as an act of preservation. There is money to be made. I'm at a point where there simply isn't anything interesting for me to buy. I don't really want any more remasters, and I consider the digitally filtered 'stems' from mono tape that are rechanelled into 'stereo' as nothing more than a novelty. I want to purchase material I don't already have, by the artists I collect.
Listen I wouldn't over emphasize the importance or spending value of a particular demographic. The availability of the material did not exist yesterday, and will find its way into the catalogue eventually in some form. Fans, 'core audiences' etc do not have any particular right or privilege to own/experience something purely because they have recently learnt of its existence, and would like to collect it - like some rare white rhino. I would suggest Bowie's fanbase is broader than ever, and the 'unique timing' of this will soon determine if there is any value or hurry in releasing an Artist's material originally unintended for release. I do think the term "50th aniversary" is something we will hear released in high rotation for some time.
@NormanFinkelstein9863 You may experience an unexpected sense of urgency, as your hourglass runs low. When you look to your future, estimate the remaining time, and think about what you'd like to experience....it changes things. It's rather like recording a cassette tape, and you see how much tape is left after you've already recorded 42 minutes, of the 45 minutes on that side. Thanks for watching. I hope they can too. That is the ultimate goal! With the other previously (unofficial) stuff that is out there - this can all be compiled to a complete YA alternate version. What’s really cool is when Peter H mentions Bowie sitting them down to hear the whole thing (at that point) and it was a totally different album for them. Different songs were on it and the New York stuff wasn’t even written yet!
@@PiecesofVinyl it would have been ideal if this stuff had been unearthed before they assembled The Gouster. It could have been included in that “alternate” version of YA.

@PiecesofVinyl saw Bowie in '79. It was the tour that played the Low album as the intro song. The background was a wall of vertical lights. What was that tour called? I have several photos from that night. I was well prepared and brought my gear in , in a suitcase and no one cared. Have a ton of great memories from that night. Bowie was an amazing performer. Great video and what a great channel. Only discovered this channel through Rachel's Ghost livestream earlier which shows how crappy the TH-cam algorithm is. Now subscribed. You deserve a lot more subscribers. Well done!
@@bogusienombre355 The channel imploded under the weight of its own bile and hatred just half an hour ago! The hatred it was spouting at some of its more normal viewers in its stream today resulted in TH-cam suspending the livestream after just 22 minutes and the channel being removed just minutes later. Patreon supporters were then told "All bad things come to an end". Well at least they got that bit right! You're lucky you didn't get to see. Fantastic stuff. Absolutely loved this. If you are a Bowie fan you have got to listen to this! How fantastic would it be to get this released as part of a double vinyl 50th Young Americans special edition. Tony Viscount needs to be at the helm. Incredible piece.
I remember seeing the tape on eBay (& daydreaming about being able to afford to purchase). I’m glad some people are ethical when it comes to dealing with such an important piece of history. I’m reminded of the guy who recorded the Beatles at his school & donated to a museum instead of cashing out last year. Maybe the estate could donate to save the studio in exchange for the tapes?
Luther was doing things professionally, before he got with Bowie his group Luther was signed and actually Bowie song fascination was taken from a Luther group song. Off the album Luther
Bless you guys for not wanting to profit off these. I do hope we shall hear them and that you get a handsome recompense from the Bowie estate for your sterling efforts!
This has become my favorite album. Granted I haven’t taken the deep dive into that catalog but there’s a lot of great grooves on this record and I’m more of a soul/groove guy.
Guys, GUYS... Apparently this is also one of the very first studio recordings of *Luther Vandross* who has a very passionate following of his own. That's a kinda' big deal too!
we speculated this might be one of the first studio recordings ever of LV - however some other viewers pointed out he had some other PRO dates prior to this.
11:17 Look at those Patti LaBelle tapes! How are they just sitting there with peeling labels? No company wants to issue that stuff, for fans around the world?
your story made me cry with joy. this revelation is a message from the Holy Spirit that Bowie is still alive somewhere up there. that you found the tapes is an act of God. please make the tapes available to us. thanks.
Drama, drama, drama, drama, drama, ultra, ultra, ultra, drama. guess what tapes get lost in this messy industry over and over and over again. Nothing special about that, it‘s actually a given default knowing how messy labels have been handling their tapes since forever until today.
First of all - GREAT video piece. Well done!! I’m curious to know how this relates to The Gouster album that was released with the “Who Can I Be Now? 1974-1976” Bowie box set from 2016. It was my understanding that Bowie left Philly with the tapes and remixed and re-edited the tracks and recorded his vocals in New York for what is the Young Americans album that we all know and love. These tapes must have been left behind. But how? And why? I love a good mystery!! It was thrilling to hear those archival unreleased recordings on the Gouster disc. I’m surprised that it was not released as a stand alone RSD album, but maybe they are saving it for the anniversary release. This would make an amazing addendum to that for a Young Americans anniversary box set. I would be first in line for that!!
I agree with this now being a great addendum. And yes it seems like these somehow got smuggled or left behind. The article that was written for this story which is linked in the description - mentions some speculation from the engineers - but no one really knows. And the cool thing is - it’s tape. So you have to just listen to and find out!
@Pieces of Vinyl; Love this video and I'm a huge fan of Young Americans album. But I also love the background music on this video! Can you share the playlist of all the songs you've used in this video?
@ Not nagging at all - YT isn't great about showing these additional comments - that track in particular is an unreleased track from the "Brewerytown Vaults" - Max is working on getting it out there but for now that is all I can provide.
Warner Chappell and Rhino Records do not have the rights to this master. They purchased 27 albums and the songs on those albums. So was not included in the sale. U.S. law says that all master tapes are freed of any contractual agreement after 35 years and returned to the artist themselves who, in turn, can sell or license it (I am surprised the Sony rep at Legacy didn't mention this since that is they acquire rights to release music). So the move is simply to give them to the estate.
@@LovelyFish-wg1dq a demo can be a master tape. It doesn't need to be in any album form, etc. And, yes, a 2 inch tape, or any tape with recorded sound on it, mixed or in the form of individual instrument stems, is a master
There’s been some samples of “I Am A Laser”, and a copy of “Shilling the Rubes” has made it to TH-cam in recent years… these need official releases along with all the other Sigma recordings.
Wow! Just Fantastic news! I sent an email to Warner Chappell about two years ago, pleading for them to release any unreleased stuff from the recording sessions for Diamond Dogs, (if indeed any existed, but I made sure to point towards the "Rock And Roll With Me" sessions available to view on TH-cam), but, needless to say, I never heard back from them. (I had been hoping to convince them to release a "Conversation Piece"/"Divine Symmetry" style of celebration ready for the (then) upcoming anniversary of Diamond Dogs). Ho-Hum!
@@PiecesofVinyl Let's hope so. I mean, your story holds more substance and gravitas than my anecdote as a "mere" avid fan with nothing to actually contribute, audaciously telling the owners of Bowie's catalogue that they'd be missing a trick, and considerable sales, (given the success of the afore-mentioned celebratory box-sets), if they didn't celebrate the anniversary of its release. ...Also, alluding to something you guys said in this interview, part of me didn't follow it up, because surely they'd already be doing this, right? ...But were possibly keeping a lid on it? ...I'd say I'm sorely disappointed, but I really didn't put in much effort, and for all I know, maybe there really is nothing surviving of the Dogs Sessions to remaster and release? RYKO had already released the supurb "Dodo" & "Candidate" demos, after all.
Amazing find, story & video! For a sec, i thought YT was pushing a video from 2016 back when the 'Who Can I Be Now?' boxset has been released with the so-called unreleased 'Gouster' album. Since what has been recently found is kinda rough, i suppose those 7 tracks on the boxset came from other/later tapes, right?
Need to hear these tapes! So are you “handing” them over to the V&A? I can't believe Warner doesn't want them immediately. Also you can find a private courier to deliver them. :)-
We are trying to get them back to who ever actually owns them which it’s seeming to simply be the estate. And we only have the story of returning tapes…so we would like to tell it!
That's good. It was eluded to in the video you might in in contact with the V&A. As you know Warner is in LA. Have you tried to contact Bill Zysblat? I'm surprised by Tony and also Carlos not returning your calls and why they wouldn't get you in touch with the estate.
Unfortunately that may not be how things work. The owner will be revealed - I’m pretty certain there’s all kinds of legal documents / language already in place that will hopefully be revealed.
The soul music diversion was a dead end for Bowie because the style was already established. Bowie was about NEW and innovation, and Young Americans wasn't it.
Is there a way I can get a 'Sigma Sound Studios' shirt like Max is wearing? Joe Tarsia was our cousin and it would be cool to have one to wear in his honor. Thanks
@@PiecesofVinyl Thanks for that info. I'll get one ..now my sisters all want as well. I have so many LPs done at Sigma Sound maybe I'll have to do a feature video. Good work, you boys.
One night during the record sessions Ava Cherry came out of Sigma Sound and knocked on my car window and said could I drive her to get something to eat for her and David! 😊 Sure She hopped into my 1970 Plymouth Sattilite and drove to Days Deli at 18th and Spruce Streets. Ava jumped out and bought sandwiches for her and David and hopped back into my car we drove back to Sigma Sound.
Maybe someone already mentioned but I have an album by Dolores Hall with a song "Who's Gonna Make it Easier For Me" featuring Luther Vandross from 1973, he also wrote the song.
Several acetates with unreleased songs had short videos on TH-cam and even the Omega auction house released audio of several Bowie reels on TH-cam as well. If you do a 1-minute search you will see that I am not acting in bad faith
man, that's quite a find. i hope you can get these tapes released. but, you should get some sort of payback, for after all, you are like treasure hunters and even though the rights may be with bowie's estate, at the very least you should get a finders fee.
Very cool to see that Lon & Derrek Van Eaton from Trenton, NJ opened the 1972 shows at The Tower! They recorded an album on Apple Records that George Harrison & Klaus Voorman produced and was released in September 1972. th-cam.com/video/7C51vbhmV9E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aYkuQfYf71a3oeia
@@Wishful-Thinking There's no such thing as "vinyl revival", though. In many places of the world the vinyl never went away. CD on the other hand is pretty much dead now.
@@Assimandeli Dunno about other places in the world but in the UK there has definitely been a Vinyl revival. A complete overpriced con whereby people think they are getting the true vinyl experience. No they are not! They are paying for over weight heavy weight vinyl that on some record players have problems playing, they are paying for a digital CD transfer onto vinyl and not a proper analogue for vinyl recording, not to mention vinyl of the 70s and 80s were made of recycled plastic, etc, etc, all which affects the supposed authentic vinyl sound you are listing to on todays heavyweight vinyl. Interesting you say CD is dead, that’s a completely laughable statement. People are starting to wake up to the vinyl con or at least they should be, I mean why pay £45 + or whatever for an inferior physical media when you can buy a CD disc that plays perfect sound, is more versatile and robust, and is cheap as chips compared to heavyweight vinyl rip off prices. The phrases you can sell snow to the Eskimo’s or sand to the Arabs if you’re clever and convincing enough certainly springs to mind.
@@Wishful-Thinking Good reply. Bad releases are of course bad releases and I'm sure that happens a lot. I assumed you were implying that the entire "revival" is some kind of a nostalgia boom, like I've seen others say, which isn't exactly correct as a lot of "music people" never gave up vinyl simply because the industry largely did in many parts of the world. That's exactly why the vinyl record did something of a comeback; a lot of people who buy physical buy vinyl, while the mainstream audience who bought CD went digital. The fact is that CD sales have gone down and some modern albums don't even come out on CD anymore. I myself still buy CDs simply because I want to own the music I pay for and support the artists I like, but generally speaking people stream their music or buy digital. I can't blame them; there are a lot of times I feel like throwing my physical album collection away because it's trash by the end of the day, but that's a whole another conversation.
If we get them back to the owners they can release the content for sure. Technically max owns the tapes at this point. He is the one who can’t do anything with them except sell em. But he doesn’t want to do. Would rather get them back to the owners so we can all enjoy it!!
Yeah, he should get some kind of finder's fee. He wants to give them back. The record company will make hundreds of millions off those tapes. Toss him a like $50k.
@@PiecesofVinyl Interesting. Cooley High cast in their jeans, t-shirts, and school jackets looks nothing like Bowie's image. Here's a blog post from someone who lived it: eastchatham.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html. I think the look described there better matches Bowie.
I don’t think politics was a main driver. Aaron knows Richard and he works for the telegraph - Aaron thought a British publication would be a good place to go with it.
These tapes do not belong to people who 'found' them. Technically and legally the tapes belong to David Bowie's estate and family. These tapes are now 'stolen' until they are returned to Bowie's estate. I have informed the estate.
We have also been in contact with the estate - which was the entire purpose of the video. And as stated numerous times - we want to return them to whom they belong. The physical property (the actually tape) after sitting dormant for 50 years and then sold through a liquidation sale - is 100% legal transfer of said property. However, we are music lovers and specially max is a lover of music and artists and instead of selling these at an auction we are trying to return them. We would like to tell the story of the return. When YOU hear back from the estate - be sure to inform of this. Thanks for watching and commenting!
C'mon... you're telling me you didn't make a safety of each of these reels? You didn't batch digitize all 24 tracks into stems? You know... just in case? I was an engineer in a 24 track studio for many years. In 1998, I was working with a mixing engineer across town on my band's 2nd album when I got news that the studio where I worked, where we had tracked the record, had burned down. It was a total loss, including all of the band's gear. Our tapes were the only ones to survive because of our mixing session. I know you know that things happen. Just sayin'. ✌
The recordings on the tape that Drexel holds leaked a few years ago and are available on YT as well as on bootleg vinyl and CD. It would be great if these new discoveries also leaked but I think these guys are honest and legitimate so we'll probably never hear them. th-cam.com/play/PLtGDN7i8dXA6ugcQtmSZBEy_FtHC4KVpj.html
Not just me. Three other people to potentially take a trip to return the tapes and tell the story. All max has in this situation is the story - but the kickstarter does have some cool perks if you opt to help out! Thanks for watching!
I do a fair amount of international travel.. just me traveling to London roundtrip with airfare and a few days at a downtown hotel with food, costs about 5k . First class roundtrip airfare on BA is 5k alone for one person. Maybe some pocket money for some side trips too .. yea for 3-4 people, I could see spending 35k. Hell, a European river cruise cabin is 21k for one person for a week without airfare .. so they want to go in style .. it adds up
Come on then let`s hear a little of the tapes ..... please ?........... just a lil` snippet ?..... no ? ok ... i get these are a potential financial goldmine to the founder and you don`t want the audio out there on youtube for all and sundry to capture free of charge etc ..but c`mon a whole half hour talking bout it and no audio ?? ... i bet these go to auction and fetch a fortune ..

Maybe the estate could donate to save the studio in exchange for the tapes?
That would be incredible. The studio is barely a shell at this point - it's really sad.
Solid, Max!!!!! Can hardly wait!!?!
Thanks for watching!
What a great story.
Make it happen Rhino we wanna hear it.
Coincidentally they just released the 50th half speed yesterday too!
I know some folks there, true story.
As a diehard Bowie fan I need to help.
Luther was doing things professionally, before he got with Bowie his group Luther was signed and actually Bowie song fascination was taken from a Luther group song. Off the album Luther
Incredible
I want to hear these tapes !
We are working on it! Stay tuned!
Wish your store was still open so I could possibly ask you to hear it lol😂
I wish his store was still open too!
Hopefully this project will come to life for fans if everyone is on their best behaviour, not their best legal position.
Bless you guys for not wanting to profit off these. I do hope we shall hear them and that you get a handsome recompense from the Bowie estate for your sterling efforts!
Appreciate the kind words. Max is probably the best person on the planet to handle these. He is a music lover first and for most!
Yes please. I WANNA HEAR
Let’s hear those plastic soul gems 💎! Especially since the new 50th anniversary edition has no bonus tracks.
This is so cool 😎. That's Geoff McCormack with him in the studio, his childhood school friend from Bromlie, South London...
Awesome fact! Thanks!
@PiecesofVinyl My pleasure. Thank you for the video.
It's Bromley, south London. Best wishes from Greenwich, south London.
@@PaulChapman1bz That is correct. Yes, you are right. Thank you.
This is my second favorite Bowie album and I would kill to have access to this in a beautiful, annotated box set!!
I hear you! This is why we are getting this stuff out there. We have more to come!
Fascinating stuff ...one correction...Bowie's band at Sigma was not his Ziggy Stardust band ...the Spiders from Mars were long gone by 1974
I realized that after the fact - thank you
@@Loverecordphl cool....good luck with the tapes!!!
These guys missed their calling in life as used car salesmen. They’re holding the tapes hostage.
They literally said they don’t want money for them and that they’ll hand them over.
Harry Maslin may shed some light on these!
Holy crap, this is amazing!
As Aaron said in the article - "Only Max!"
your story made me cry with joy. this revelation is a message from the Holy Spirit that Bowie is still alive somewhere up there. that you found the tapes is an act of God. please make the tapes available to us.
Will do. But some of it unreleased material!
@@PiecesofVinyl Awesome. I especially love the track from 13:11 to 15:40. So soulful!
@PiecesofVinyl, Could you share the name of the artist and track name from 13:06 , please?
I'm really curious about that track. Sorry for nagging. 😁
@ Not nagging at all - YT isn't great about showing these additional comments - that track in particular is an unreleased track from the "Brewerytown Vaults" - Max is working on getting it out there but for now that is all I can provide.
I'd definitely would love to hear this. I certainly would buy the album.
This would be perfect to pair with the rest of the outakes and get a complete alternate (full philly version) of Young Americans!
But these are not master tapes.
This would make a complete alternate YA record!
Ho-Hum!
Hopefully this will get some stuff moving! You never know!
Release it on boxset!! Cmon Bowie estate !!!!
I wish they could find some session tapes for Phyllis Hyman and Stephanie Mills, and The Jones Girls.
Yes these are different tapes.
Luther was the top background musician in NY , along with singing many jingles. So Luther had done his 10,000 hours.
21:23...Correction: Vandross had at least 5 years of professional experience by this point.
Good to know. We got a comment from Robin as well saying there were some inaccuracies with Luther. Thanks for clarifying and watching!
Incredible ❤🎵🎶❤️🔥🔊🙏🏻👊🏻🎧📼
Imam , Carlos Alomar, Lexi and Duncan should have control of the tapes
Unfortunately that may not be how things work. The owner will be revealed - I’m pretty certain there’s all kinds of legal documents / language already in place that will hopefully be revealed.
The soul music diversion was a dead end for Bowie because the style was already established. Bowie was about NEW and innovation, and Young Americans wasn't it.
I like the record.
Is there a way I can get a 'Sigma Sound Studios' shirt like Max is wearing? Joe Tarsia was our cousin and it would be cool to have one to wear in his honor. Thanks
You gotta talk to max - I think they are for sale - but there are Gouster versions on the kickstarter page plus hats too!
@@PiecesofVinyl Thanks for that info. I'll get one ..now my sisters all want as well. I have so many LPs done at Sigma Sound maybe I'll have to do a feature video. Good work, you boys.
Ava Cherry was at Sigma Sound before Bowie and working on her album Bowie was providing material.
@@Stef-p8r that's incredible! I'm sure it was the best hoagie David Bowie ever had!
I need that sigma sound studio shirt. Link please???
Please get these recordings release!
Maybe someone already mentioned but I have an album by Dolores Hall with a song "Who's Gonna Make it Easier For Me" featuring Luther Vandross from 1973, he also wrote the song.
yep - we made some inaccuracies regarding Luther in the studio prior to Bowie - but thanks for commenting!
@@PiecesofVinyl It happens, thanks for the reply! This is still an amazing find. Looking forward to see how this develops.
I must hear these!!!!!!
You must!
Great!
Get ‘em out there!
Super interesting stuff!! The working process of Young Americans unveiled!
I agree. It’s cool to see behind the curtains on this stuff. Especially when it’s stuff we have heard a million times one way.
I'd love to here this either on Vinyl or CD.....and mass production to get this music out there...shout out from the UK.❤❤❤
Right on! Thanks for watching - I would love to see it get out there too - let's make it happen!
No snippets to hear?30 seconds snippet are allowed by the law
Several acetates with unreleased songs had short videos on TH-cam and even the Omega auction house released audio of several Bowie reels on TH-cam as well. If you do a 1-minute search you will see that I am not acting in bad faith
Correct, however these are not those tapes. Another batch has been found, and remarkably after 50 years still remain unheard
Interesting article, but I bought a cd from Amazon last year called Sigma Sound Sessions. Not on any recognisable label. Is it a bootleg?
I am not too sure - if its got stuff from the lost Drexel tapes - then its def. a bootleg (but that is a cool find....)
Bring out the box! What was he building in there? We have a right to know:)
man, that's quite a find. i hope you can get these tapes released. but, you should get some sort of payback, for after all, you are like treasure hunters and even though the rights may be with bowie's estate, at the very least you should get a finders fee.
that would be cool.
Excellent video! If you haven’t shared this with Tony Visconti, please know I did! 👨🏻🎤🎸🛸
Thanks - others have sent it his way as well - I am pretty sure he has seen it!
how the hell could Bowie tapes get 'lost' - not remotely possible on my watch.....anyone agree
there is some speculation in the Telegraph article - it might have been "squirreled" away - not necessarily for profit - but for keepsakes.
@@PiecesofVinyl in that case I’m all for it. Are new digital copies of these the holy grail in that they can never be lost or degrade
Trenton makes The world takes. ….I had to say it. I don’t get many Trenton specific comments!
Please release a cd boxset.
Hope its on CD too.
Why not!?
Definitely would hope it’s on CD. Not everyone is falling for this vinyl revival con.
Apparently nothing can be done with these tapes (ie. can't be sold, put up on the internet etc) so the chances of us getting to hear them are...???
If we get them back to the owners they can release the content for sure. Technically max owns the tapes at this point. He is the one who can’t do anything with them except sell em. But he doesn’t want to do. Would rather get them back to the owners so we can all enjoy it!!
@@PiecesofVinyl Here's hoping it all goes well...
Shows how weird things have got..treating a bone like it's a banquet.. desperate times..
Do you remember President Nixon, do you remember the bills you have to pay
Or even yesterday?
Yeah, he should get some kind of finder's fee. He wants to give them back. The record company will make hundreds of millions off those tapes. Toss him a like $50k.
I agree with that!
«Hundreds of millions» 😂 relax dude…

4:48 What's the Cooley High (1975) connection?
it was a nod to soul kids that inspired Bowies "Gouster" phase.
We need a complete "Gouster" edition
I agree!

15 mins in - quite the buildup for alt versions and some Luther - i could be wrong.

Dear God please hurry up!! I'll never make it!!
go directly to iman and not the estate?
iman?
@@PiecesofVinylBowie’s widow. Famous supermodel.
Rough Trade would be a good start for a vinyl release. The Telegraph is a right-wing newspaper in the uk. Why did you think it was perfect?
I don’t think politics was a main driver. Aaron knows Richard and he works for the telegraph - Aaron thought a British publication would be a good place to go with it.
@PiecesofVinyl I get that but Bowie had a lot of values. Another great label would be Rhino.
The tapes were transferred as you say - just in case. And also to preserve the tapes.
DESPERATE to hear these tapes!!!!
lets get them out!
You are correct. The hope here is maybe this all could now be compiled as a complete deluxe re issue or something.
get em out
Cool story but you're crowdfunding $35K to return a reel of tape? What am I missing?
Not just me. Three other people to potentially take a trip to return the tapes and tell the story. All max has in this situation is the story - but the kickstarter does have some cool perks if you opt to help out! Thanks for watching!
@@PiecesofVinyl Well I think maybe you should explain the numbers because it still doesn't make any sense. Just saying...
Thanks for watching! And hope you also subbed! I am certain these are not going to auction that was kind of the whole point.
Oh and we can’t play any of the music without getting potentially sued.
