Finally the Blackmagic Box Camera we've been waiting for, they ditched the brick form factor and brought the box style baby lets talk about if this camera will replace certain contenders that are out and if it will be worth selling my Red Komodo for it!

In Black magic fashion the way they normally sell the cameras, I looked forward to Pocket then pocket pro plus evf? I would expect the Pyxis pro (perhaps even a discount version of evf and nds).
The Pyxis is a great refresh option for people happy with the identical image captures from its non box form pocket twin. It is nice to have options but as I spent more time originally learning the system and ideal exposure for a few different cameras. I settled on a system that has the most benefits to what I shoot and plan to shoot. What i noticed is that they are all fantastic. There Some with features that others do not have, mount options, shutter types etc. Lazy people who do not expose or light properly and complain about their poorly captured image a from camera x y and z WILL never be happy with a camera and will have the same GAS issue in another product cycle. Dynamic range is not an issue in these cameras. Planning is. Lenses and lighting will have a greater impact aside from learning to grade rather that slapping a LUT on an image and being unhappy with the poorly edited outcome.
I understand that documentary style or news capture style filming requirements are very different and for this there are many much better options than the ones people complain about.
All of the camera killer click bate (not accusing you) but its something that happens with every release and the sheer number of brand ambassador and influencers who look forward to creating and maintaining brand partnerships that muddy the waters of reality. 😅🎉 📷 its even worse in the stills camera space. I would understand if blackmagic released a new sensor with this camera making it different than the pocket camera but as it stands its basically a 6k in a box style. Great but not a killer of anything other than the pocket 6k (until they make the pyxis pro) then it will be a nice replacement of that.
For quite long time, I’ve been waiting for this camera. I am a big fan of the pocket cameras, especially the 6K till this day. I still consider it to be my favorite camera that I have ever owned, and I own a lot of high-end cameras, but on its own for me, speak the image quality in that camera is above Cameras twice the price this is why I made this video because I’m actually excited to have my favorite Camera in the form factor that I always dream having that was why I bought the red Komodo because of the factor I like that style of camera for rigging on the camera that I wanted to be released years ago, I can easily call it my new dream camera! thanks for your input super valuable. I’m actually gonna highlight this one.
@iamRickBonilla_ I appreciate your drive brother. I spent just under 20 years as an animator and VFX artist matching various camera footage and dealing with the aftermath of mixing and matching renders and different cameras output and resolutions. Hehe fun times. As a photographer and designer I have always leaned towards raw output for my own stuff but at work we are always at the mercy of fun makers. I really like to keep things as simple as possible and at this point, ACES is king and as long as shots are lit properly then when an 8 bit image will hold a beautiful story frame. If the user understands their tools, they will choose the right one based on the budget at hand. I chose my current motion camera as an experiment and it has traveled well.

The best thing to do is go with the L-mount because it's the most versatile mount. You can adapt to the other mounts from there. Whereas if you get EF or PL, you're reducing your choices of lenses
Man your right, sounds like how I have the Komodo now I have RF to PL and RF to EF, actually you just simplified it man!!!!! 💯
I mean most affordable cine lenses now come in EF, most BM users already own EF lenses, the EF mount is a locking mount, I don't see that many L to EF adaptors that are good quality, unless BM makes one....I think most people will get the EF version. If you're an industry DP and own PL glass maybe you get the PL version but most DPs rent PL cine lenses for jobs...I think a lot of people didn't upgrade from the pocket pro to the full frame because it was L mount IMO

@@buknar456 true. But when possible if you are owning instead of renting your body, it is always best to have options. On the set, I’m still seeing adapted lenses even on larger budget stuff. Rehoused lenses are not always available. L or Rf are still great to leave enough room for any adapted option to PL, EF M or whatever.
Under tremendous pressure, Blackmagic will release version 2 with built in NDs.
Dude, you nailed it. It was one of the reasons why I was holding off on buying the regular 6K full frame. But now that you say this, you’re killing me, man you’re making me wait even more lol
I love the image quality on my BMCC6K FF better then my Komodo and I did preorder the PYXIS PL yesterday l.
Man that sounds great, I think I be been spoiled with the FF Look since owning my A7siii and my FX3, but the image quality on blackmagic is just right man, Happy for you let me know how it goes when you get your PYXIS!!!!

Cool how much you selling the komodo for as I felt the opposite when I was grading and had to choose between red and black magic image.

I plan to use the Pyxis as a downsize step from an Ursa Broadcast 6k I own and use for shoulder work. The Pyxis will match with the Tilta Lightweight Shoulder Rig perfectly with the side controls in just the right spot. I’m not super excited about the sensor. It’s fine for interviews and basic narrative filming, but particularly in open gate, the rolling shutter is pronounced. Nevertheless, this camera will keep me going and lighten the shoulder load for a couple of years.
Man sounds awesome that’s gonna be the ultimate tiny killer rig right there, this camera is definitely going to be back ordered for a while for sure
these black magic camera s are just repackage pocket 4ks processors with different sensors added to them.
they use cheap tricks like cropping into the sensor, instead of down-sampling, to get lesser formats and more frame rates.
so, if you have some noises at open gate, you ll have big popcorn noises of the same image crop to 1080 for examlpe.
Black magic carmera s do have a good image given adequate lighting condition.
Blackmagic 6K Pro Pocket or Panasonic LUMIX S5IIx seem like a better value than the Pyxis for now.
You can't swap the mounts. The best bet is going for L so you can convert to EF and PL. This way you get all 3 mounts.

Nice new option for people wanting to upgrade from pocket 4k or if their pocket 6k is broken. As the pyxis is a boxish rectangular version of the pocket 6k and not the pro version as this does not have NDs of which im sure the "$3999.00 pyxis pro" will have next year, this is no more or less a komodo killer than its pocket family is.
I used the blackmagic 6k and the RED komodo together and the difference in dynamic range that RED claims to have is a lie. There isn't even a stop of difference. It's true, calibrating the blacks on each shoot is a pain in the ass. This new camera looks great. The only thing I miss is the proress format.
It’s actually 14.7 stops I was reading thread where they Measured the stops with the Xyla 21, but definitely this new blackmagic will be the better choice I don’t care about global shutter I’m not filming any fast pace content you know.
The L mount is nice because of the versatility of adapting vintage lenses. I am debating getting pl mount for cinema lenses; this wouldn't be my only cam tho

Agreed! It looks very professional and I love the new flexibility of the mounting options. Nope, Blackmagic already said you cannot swap the mounts. I'm ready to get into the ecosystem of the Pyxis and then I'll be ready for the when the Pyxis 2 comes out in 2025.
Yeah, most likely they will come with internal in these, etc. i’m probably gonna hold off and stay with the Komodo for now. Them Blazar Cato Lenses they announced look pretty interesting 2x stretch with an Atlas Mercury type look sounds really good!
Great video. I think you should get the L-mount. I have the L-mount 6K Full frame previous model and I have Canon EF, Nikon and Pl mount adapters for it. I love having the flexibility to use almost any lens ever made on it. I'm definitely buying the new Pyxis too. Cheers!

@@iamRickBonilla Although it would be nice to have the locking EF mount if you have all EF lenses and don't want them to jiggle when you pull focus, but what I did was get the SmallRig Revo-Arcane mattebox. This is like the Star Trail version but with the 114mm back because I use Zeiss CP.2 lenses. It comes with 114mm ring adapter for most other filter diameters too. What's great is that that I use it with the 15mm rods, and I slide the matte box over the lens and clamp it with the matte box and the lens is rock solid and doesn't wiggle with the focus torque of the follow focus.

Can’t swap. Get the leica as it takes pl and ef adapter. Plus both adapters have variable internal nds

That’s true, but I’m at the point right now. I’m just investing on PL lenses sooner or later. Everyone is going to adapt to it, but yeah I will mount is more flexible because you can use any type of amount with it.

@@VertexChannel1 I totally get it that but one thing is that I had experiences with all of the pocket style cameras from blackmagic and honestly I never liked the form factor I always was a fan of the box style camera it just looks nicer and she it’s rigged it just looks more professional than a point and shoot with a grip camera, not to mention balancing one with an 18-35 lens was always challenging you have get counter weights making it heavier I guess those are the reasons
Does black magic have a phone app that controls the camera? Would be useful for self talking shoots like how the Komodo uses theirs
Yes they do, and it’s a lot better now since they redesigned the app to work better with the camera similar to red’s control app.
How is everyone say that this camera is going to be great when no one yet tested it and lot of people complained about low light performance of the same sensor on the 6K FF
Not sure what people are talking about I did a video on the first pocket 6k in extreme low light and it was a super 35 and it look straight like a movie and no noise check it out it’s on my channel paired with a Helios it was a car scene, it’s full frame so for sure it’s gonna be a lot cleaner. It’s just people don’t know how to use their cameras.
Marketing magic. You don't need images when you have brand ambassadors for hire.
In the end of the day, if you know how to expose and light a scene then you works be able to get clean images with either.
@@anthonyrock5039I love BM for the fact that they helped us. Great product, great price, incredible studio ecoystem. The only thing I must admit that they didnt do enough marketing. Otherwise they should have been so popular and successful than they are right now. I think Grant doing it not for profit. He just wanna help and sharing fun with us.
I've heard the opposite of people liking the image of the FF 6k. If you like the other FF, you'll like this one. They're the same cams in different form factor
i would want to get the PL mount too. but if interchangable, im getting the ef mount first. i will definitely get this cam...

i would to hear it from you if interchangable, you know what i just dont understand why people are complaining so much. i even have the 2.5k cinema camera and the 4k and p4k and the ursa g1, all of those cameras were not perfect but i do prefer to know the strenght of each cameras, and use them to get the image quality that i want... people are always complaining.

Nice one. I'm still getting a great image from my P4K. People can get hooked on the next thing and the next thing, but we're all spoilt for choice these days. Most of getting a good image now is down to the person holding the camera (and hardware-wise lenses really). I need a second camera as I'm sick of pairing with my sonys so I'll be getting a Pyxis and I know I'll never look back °¬)
Honestly, I mix my footage from red Komodo and Sony FX three and they mix well together but I hear you having two cinema cameras from the same house makes the job a lot easier

So here is cineD top 20 dynamic range tests done to a signal to noise ration of 2. The new bmcc6k gets a score of 11.7 so the pyxis will be the same as it the same sensor. A $3000 camera can’t get much more DR. The bmpcc og had a score of 11.2 and it’s 10 years old. Sure a $25000-$80000 camera has if your lucky a true DR of 13-15.

My guy brought out the whole spec sheet nice!!!! Wow I thought the red Komodo was 16 stops of dynamic range this whole time since that’s what red says, but then again any manufacture is gonna praise their products

Nothing ever has more DR thanks Arri. Plus the recovery latitude of over and underexposing is crazy at I think 12 while the closest is usually 9 I think

@@iamRickBonilla well it does have more megapixels and slightly more dynamic range so I can see why. Colour science is ever so slightly different to if I remember correctly.

because it's "pro-looking". Because it seems industrial. Because it's riggable. but mostly cuz it's "like" a Red.
Has nothing to do with looks, but everything to do with utility and modularity. A box camera is far more adaptable and versatile in terms of rig setups.
I can finally use my gimbal. I refused to even try and mount my previous pocket cams on my ronin.i could care less about internal nds. I have nds that aren't worth reselling so I might as well keep using them. More customizable, cf express, looks cool and black magic image quality is so good. Not all that has to do with it being boxed shape

This camera, at least from all the research I’ve been able to attain… Lousy dynamic range, horrible in low light, and bad rolling shutter. Why would anybody want this camera? Yes it has a pretty body… Pretty on the outside and lousy on the inside.

Having internal ND or not doesn’t determine whether or not a camera is a “cinema camera”.
Also, if you expose the sensor properly, 13 stops of DR is far more than enough.

The lack of Pro res and the 13 stops are dealbreakers EVEN for that price. You can get any good video focused mirrorless cam like the fx 3 for the same amount pf money. W better low light, better dr, better screen , full sized XLR-s and sony autofocus ofc. Or any other brand in the same price range offers either more or about the same. If u want a box Z cams , used komodos and kinefinity terra is the same price. More features , better dr .
