Shen was born as a son of the Confucian lineage and was originally an heir to the Imperial City (Gongmen). In his youth, he was obsessed with using gunpowder to make weapons. After overhearing a prophecy that if he continued on that dark path, he would be defeated by a white warrior, Shen frantically led soldiers (wolves) to massacre Panda village (which later we know used to be the main character's house). Returning, he expected his father and mother to be praised, but in the end they only looked at him with overwhelming horror and disappointment before banishing him from the royal throne forever. However, for the next decade, Shen has always quietly built up his army and weapons to conquer China, awaiting the opportunity of revenge. Shen is a cunning, cunning, and downright ruthless man who can be used for purposes without being tricky. When conquering the Imperial Citadel, he did not hesitate to use force to show off his cruelty, making people afraid. Shen has an extremely charismatic, elegant and beautiful appearance, partly because his fighting style is soft, graceful but also deadly. The scenes where he dances and swings swords in the movie must be obsessively beautiful. At the same time, Shen is considered a genius, because he has successfully crafted cannonballs - a superb weapon that can defeat any kind of martial arts and is fully capable to help him execute his plan. Chinese owners. Shen works decisively and decisively, demanding absolute loyalty and willingness to use his innocent life to pave the way to glory. In the movie, he doesn't seem to respect anyone, except for Soothsayer , who turns out to be his nanny when he was a child. Countless times, we can see that no matter how furious Soothsayer had predicted Shen's defeat, he never dared to manipulate her, despite her life. completely in his hands once she was out of value. This proves: no matter how cruel, cold, dark Shen is, he still has a bit of light, a bit of compassion deep in his heart. He is not so cruel that he is out of cure as many people think. However, it wasn't until the second half of the movie that I started to fall in love with him. It was for a brief, but very meaningful moment. And it was it that made me love the character so much. At the weapons factory, before saying goodbye to Soothsayer (letting her go), deciding to push her out of her life forever, Shen confessed his thoughts, that his parents hated him, that they had misunderstand him, and he wants to prove them - and the world to see that, he, is doing the right thing. The way he said those words, his low voice, a little sad, both painful and bitter, made people feel sorry. Apparently Shen didn't mean to lie, at that moment he confessed his true feelings. Because the truth is, he has no reason to act. The only person he dared to show his weakness in front of him was Soothsayer, who had taken care of him since he was a child, and clearly understood him better than anyone. Seeing Shen's hurt, Soothsayer tried to advise him, responding that his father's mother actually loved him so deeply, they loved him so deeply that they died from the pain of losing their child. At that moment, we can see Shen's contradictory face, as if he's struggling to disbelieve those words, to cling to the 'truth' he has buried deep in his mind all the time. decades now. Shen's insides were torn, one side believed that his parents truly loved him, and the other was ignoring the obvious truth, continuing to hate, continuing to nurture his dream of domination. . Although he later told him that the past doesn't matter, that he had to put the past aside to move forward, but he really didn't realize all he was doing, just because of the past he was trying to jettison. Although the conversation above is the main reason why I love Shen, it is certainly not the only time he exposes his complicated inner side or expresses bitter feelings with his past ( but later on I saw it again). As in the beginning of the movie, after Shen conquered the once-Confucian castle, where his father-in-law once lived, he looked at his father's throne and smiled sarcastically as he talked about the memory of his time. childhood. Of course, that was what happened before he ordered his subordinates to push it out the window. The act may seem sassy and heartless, but if we reflect on it, it is just Shen's way of denying the past, trying to prove that he has no attachment to people. he always secretly loves. The fact that Shen did not hesitate to explode cannons to destroy Confucius citadel immediately (besides the reason to destroy the enemy) was also to show his carelessness in the past memorabilia, his desire to cut. broken the bond of love with mother and father ... In addition, there is one more segment that I judge to fully express his bitterness and indignation while insisting that he was abandoned by his parents. It happened after a conversation between Shen and Soothsayer, when Po - Shen Long's great hero - who was predicted to defeat him broke into the armory to confront Shen about his true past. Po does not know a few decades ago, he was the one who led the massacre in the village of Panda, directly harmed his family and made him orphan. Of course, Shen would never tell Po the truth. Instead, he took advantage of the wound in his heart, causing him a lot of pain when convincing Po that he was abandoned by his parents. Shen's bitter and cruel words aimed at rubbing salt into the wounds of his enemies were actually the same words he said to himself. The words that in his mind always insisted were the truth. Shen is a cunning, not afraid to lie to achieve his goals, but he is also a very good self-deceiver. He does not want to believe that his parents really love him, even though that is what he has been wishing for decades now. Because, if he did, he would feel that what he was trying to build - the weapons, the battleships, the army - would all be wasted. He would find his blind hatred to be completely absurd, and that it was something he didn't want to face at all. Underneath his frigid, cruel appearance, Shen is an extremely lonely man, a child who yearns for love and recognition from his parents. Thinking that he was rejected by a loved one, pushed into the dead end, he turned suffering into ambition, turned despair into malevolence, sadness became the driving force to prove to everyone the value really yourself. He is someone who uses power to compensate for the loss, to kill to fill the void in the heart. He is someone who thinks that happiness must be obtained by force and force, someone who, no matter how much power there is in his hand, cannot find peace, cannot find true happiness. The final battle between Shen and Po is one of my favorite passages. After Po reached the realm of tranquility and defeated all Shen's armory, the two men officially faced off to fight ‘one-on-one’. But the truth is, Po has no intention of killing Shen, absolutely not. Even the fact that he defeated his warships just because he wanted to protect his friends only. But Shen is different, for him, Po is the thorn that must be uprooted to carry out a scheme, to satisfy his will. While he both hates and frightens him, Po holds no ill will towards him, though he should have hated him for taking his family - all of him, ruining him. peace, and makes him live in doubt about his past. But it was Po's composure and forgiveness that surprised Shen. Because he could not have expected a person to let go of pain and hatred so easily. Perhaps the past of Po and Shen were not the same, but both hurt, both suffered many losses. Yet Po can easily and quickly find peace while he has to live in the shadow of the past, tormented by despair and suffering for decades. Forgive - that's something Shen can't do. Despite knowing his aversion to him, when Po advised Shen to let go of the past, he fully sincerely wished that he could change. Because, he believes that there will definitely exist a brighter future for him if he really tries. In other words, you're giving him a second chance to do it all over again! But Shen doesn't think so. He originally did not have an optimistic view of Po, and now he is not smart enough to see hope for himself. He looks back on his life and all he sees is loss and failure. He has made every effort to resist prophecy, against unfortunate fate. But in the end his conspiracy still fails, and his weapons and armies remain in vain. He lost his parents in the past, and now he has chased away her aunt Duong - the only one who understands him, and personally killed Wolf Boss - his childhood friend. Shen's life was a series of mistakes, filled with loneliness, inadequacy, grief, and despair. Right now, he could see no other way for himself. So, instead of accepting defeat and starting over, Shen deliberately attacked to create the only outlet that existed for him - Death
From start to finish, Shen has always been a figure of tragedy. He is a poor child who has been lost for decades insisting to himself that his parents do not love him. He is someone who is always desperate to be recognized, troubled by love and happiness. Shen is a loner, suffering a lot, drowning in the obsession that the world owes him something, because it has taken away everyone he loves. But Shen did not realize it was he who drove them away from the start, it was he who smashed his happiness. Although Shen had acted cruelly, unable to forgive him, in the end he was still very pitiful. Maybe he doesn't deserve a good and happy life after his crimes, but I still can't help but pity him. Shen's last moment made me feel terribly sad. The hero defeats the wicked, the fireworks fill the dome of the sky as if celebrating, yet I feel a little pain in my heart. Come to think of it, it's also funny ... And it was also the first time in my life that I felt sorry for the passing of a character. To add a little more, aside from Shen, I have feelings for Yang auntie, because she seems to be the only one who truly understands him. While people just looked up at him with disdain and awe, considering him a criminal, a cruel monster that had murdered many innocent lives, only Soothsayer was looking at him. with gentle eyes, as if he had always been the innocent child she once raised, a pitiful and miserable child who made a mistake and now pays a hefty price for his mistake. From heylineclipse (Sorry for my bad english, But this story will give us an objective look at the character Shen, I feel it makes sense so I think this is the story everyone should read)
Shen is the most terrifying villain from KFP to me. Because he isn't a death god, nor the strongest warrior. He is a genius with an army, a revolutionary weapon and a megalomaniac mind. And that makes him feel so real and human that it is scary
I hear some people say that shen isnt good at kung fu. They say that he only has his trickery, army, and cannons. But don't forget that Shen beat two kungfu *masters* at once
@@carameii Yeah.. Didn't you saw the peacock in the front door?.. Ahh there you are,Soothsayer.. It seems that your fortune telling skills is not as good as you thought..
“You want to see? It’s a gift. Well it’s your parting gift. And it will part you. Part of you here, part of you there, and part of you way over there, staining the wall!”
Lord Shen is a great villain. Shen makes his own problems and embraces the madness in him instead of leaving it all behind. But I understand why he did what he did because he had no past to go back to. Lord Shen truly changed Kung Fu Panda from a kid show to something deeper.
One of my favorite animated villains honestly, I love that he wasn't overwhelmingly powerful like Ty Lung or Kai, he was good at fighting but his strength was his ingenuity. I also loved that everything he said against Po was really a reflection of himself, "Your parents didn't love you.." when moments earlier he said "My parents...hated me". Great villain who isn't just one dimensional, he has complexity.
And the way he accepted his death was badass too. He didnt even bother escaping it, he just closed his eyes. Such a badass peacock, i love him (as a character).
Lord shen is the most underrated villain ever everyone talks about tai lung and Kai but not shen he is *THE* anti po he caused his destiny he tried avoiding his fate but meeting his doom at the end the master mind

I love this character he gives of vibes of horror and sadism while looking arrogant. He scares me inn yes of power and capability like he has an entire arsenal in one sleeve and another is his tail
Shen is a great character, and one of my favorite character ever. And his death is so freaking beautiful, satisfying for me, but it's so meaningful at the same time. When he said, "I accept this!!" to Po, he didn't mean to accepting himself as an evil person. But he accepting his fate, defeated or should i say, killed by the black and white warrior. That's why he close his eyes with relief when the cannon going to fall on him and kill him.
If you stop to think about it,the warrior of black and white is Shen himself, because he was black and white. He couldn't see past what he called destiny and change it,and it was what brought his damnation
*Tactical, Elegant and Lethally Fast............* Those were the main traits of the most dangerous KFP villain.......... And I believe you honored such traits pretty well.............
The best part about shen is how contrasting his character is, his design of a white, graceful, peacock, using weapons with grace and revolutionizing the world through his new use of the fireworks (presumably meant to represent the use of gunpowder to create the first fire arms), while being a sadistic, psychopathic megalomaniac, who's first big action is slughtering a peaceful village of pandas with a pack of wolves, who are typically seen as sneaky, conniving stalkers, and in the end their leader, who wears an eyepatch is show to have more sympathy then Shen.
What’s great about Shen is how the idea of Peacocks being beautiful and peaceful is just flipped on it’s head leaving a sense of confusion that can lead to dread.
" *Look into your bowl and tell me what glory awaits.* " "If you continue on your current path, you will find yourself... at the bottom of the stairs."
“The Year of the Peacock begins now!” “Right now? Because it’s like, the middle of the year, so you only get half a year.” *shing* “Of course, er, happy new year sir!”
A long time ago, there was a boy who don't understand many people. He hates those that cause harm to others but never realizing how much some people are similar to him. As he ages, he starts to realize these people. How and why they are what they are. The boy is me and I never realized how badass Lord Shen was until two years ago.
TH-cam finally recommending something that is not only good but a MASTERPIECE. Menacing and magnificient, perfectly fitting this (criminally underrated) awesome character.
He's got this sinister evil about him, but he isn't like most animated villains. He's a peacock, one of the most graceful, beautiful, and peaceful birds, and they throw you off with him being a mass murderer. He's smart and knows what he is able and not able to do. Villains that are smart like him are the scariest of all. What makes him more scary, is that, if I'm correct, he's he only kung fu panda villain to actually kill a kung fu master, and he wiped out almost all the pandas to a close point of extinction. Out of top ten scariest animated villains, he ranks #3.
Lord Shen will always be one of the best villains ever! Tai Long and Kai are nothing compared to him I can't just accept that he's just a kids animation villain, he's got all the ingredients of a good villain his writing is so realistic I can't even find a single fault with him he's just a masterpiece. I watched the movie about 6 months ago and I can say Lord Shen made me a fan of the kfp series. The Year of the Peacock will last forever!
Outstanding work, so epic! I love Lord Shen, he's such a remarkable character. I can't sympathize with him completely, of course, but I love how the creators introduced a skilled, dangerous villain, who's... not exactly the type you'd picture as a tough warrior. He's not a big ox or a mighty tiger, he's a slender peacock who lacks muscles... But he still dominates, 'cuz he uses agility and intelligence. Plus he's got a really complex personality and lots of personal traumas that make him interesting to observe.
he's like, one of the best villains ive ever analyze since i love analyzing villains. His complexity is what made me be very interested in him and his feelings/ thoughts about his parents is quite confusing due to the fact that his parents truly loved him but he tries to deny it even if he knows it. I'd say he's one of the most, if not, the number one most evil villains in dreamworks. He didnt feel remorseful about the pandas and is very focused on his goals and will do anything to make sure nothing goes in the way of his plans (even if it means killing his own army/Wolf Boss)

I love thiiiis, Lord Shen deserve to be reconize so much he is so underated ! And his theme is a LOT underated ! Especially this masterpiece you made ♡
Tai Lung relied on brute force and his training. Shen relied on his cunning, his speed. We'd assume that a being like shen so skinny and light-footed wpuld be weak, but he felled multiple warriors and nearly the dragon warrior. That what makes him so scary.
I created a story with a tragic protagonist. He was born scorned and thus grew up, when he was at his worst moment came hope and happiness ... which were soon taken from him. He brooded in hatred and sadness, as well as following a persecution for power in an attempt to forget. Well, this song matched the whole story so much that I managed to fit all of his most important moments.
In the beginning of the movie you hear the Shen's parents theme, or a "peacock's dynasty" theme. It is kind, bright and calm, as a reign of Shen's parents The thing is, the Shen's theme is the same theme as his parents', or a peacock's dynasty reign theme - they have the same motif. But as cruel, dark and distorted Shen is, so is his theme. Kinda cool detail, which I noticed, idk if you've noticed it or not)
I'm so happy Shen gets the recognition and appreciation he deserves, he's one of my all time favourite villains, and he's a damn peacock! (I *_love_* birds)

You know a villain is good if they know how to attack the hero both physically, mentally, and emotionally. That's what makes shen a brilliant villain
Shen is the most terrifying villain from KFP to me. Because he isn't a death god, nor the strongest warrior. He is a genius with an army, a revolutionary weapon and a megalomaniac mind. And that makes him feel so real and human that it is scary

Lord Shen is a great villain. Shen makes his own problems and embraces the madness in him instead of leaving it all behind. But I understand why he did what he did because he had no past to go back to. Lord Shen truly changed Kung Fu Panda from a kid show to something deeper.
One thing is for sure, if this guy makes an epic orchestral version, it's because the series or movie is totally worth watching
He's such a badass peacock. I love complex characters, so maybe that's why i love Shen so much.

One of the most underrated soundtracks (and characters) ever made imo. Great job
Hopefully more people will start making covers of this now
Thank! I agree, Shen and especially his theme is far too overlooked.
What’s great about Shen is how the idea of Peacocks being beautiful and peaceful is just flipped on it’s head leaving a sense of confusion that can lead to dread.

"If you continue on your current path, you will find yourself... at the bottom of the stairs."

1:24 is when the theme turns truly epic. Legendary work.

Sorry for the late reply and I totally agree! I love how he uses his cunning and intelligence rather than brute strength to demolish fights.

Well, this song matched the whole story so much that I managed to fit all of his most important moments.
thats a great backstory
In the beginning of the movie you hear the Shen's parents theme, or a "peacock's dynasty" theme. It is kind, bright and calm, as a reign of Shen's parents
The thing is, the Shen's theme is the same theme as his parents', or a peacock's dynasty reign theme - they have the same motif.
But as cruel, dark and distorted Shen is, so is his theme.
Kinda cool detail, which I noticed, idk if you've noticed it or not)
Honestly he is such a good villain; the way it talks about his childhood and how his father gave him dreams that it will be his one day
