What I love about Shen is that despite having an army at his disposal he is actually a competent fighter, he was able to keep up against two masters and only backed away when the third arrived. He knows the limitations of his own combat which is why he decided to build weapons yet will not shield himself with his own troops for protection.
It is possible that when he was still living in the palace and his true nature was revealed his parents wanted him to know how to fight so he could defend himself in case of an invasion and that he just kept practicing even after he was banished
I agree. It adds to his grandeur, taking out enemies by himself rather than using his soldiers. That way he’s able to put on a show. Using his tail feathers as a distraction/shield, the way his combat is a display of elegance rather than brute force, how he is dressed in robes instead of armor, how when he produces a throwing knife it almost sounds like a bell or wind chime. He was such a good character as well as a good villain!
Required to train maybe, but he definitely put lot's of effort into. He can actually fought with furious level fighters, and the figure and shape of him doesn't make it easy. What a sad and beautiful character
It's so funny how Shen comes back to his parents all happy after killing all the pandas. He's like, "Mom, dad! You're gonna be so proud! I COMMITED GENOCIDE!" Then he's shocked when they're completely mortified LOL

Its bcuz the soothteller got more influence to ruler than you see, he just have to physically reverse it so his royal family might trust he can be the right successor.
I like how the "scars heal, wounds heal" dialogue sounds like a comedic moment at first, but it perfectly showcases the fundamental difference between Po and Lord Shen. Po believes that achieving inner peace means reconciling with your past and moving on, thus letting the scars heal, while Shen believes only the wound heals, but scars don't. He may have gotten over his parents "abandoning" him and tried to move on, but failing to accept the truth, that his parents genuinely loved him and only wanted to keep him safe, has resulted in his scar not healing.
Thats what I thought too. What Shen said reminds me of a quote from Helluva Boss "I'm not over it, im over you" Shen went from being heartbroken and furious his parents never loved him to not caring about them. But the pain of their abandonment is still there, it still drives him and hurts just like a scar, closed but still painful
Scars don’t heal though. That’s a fact. They remain permanently and when conditions are met can quite literally reopen of your body doesn’t have the nutrients to constantly keep them healed.

An interesting part of his backstory is that the Soothsayer goat was apparently a caretaker of his during his youth, so she has the unique position of testing his patience or calling him out.
Soothsayer should have never phophesied. Gotta love the Greek tragedy though. She said he would be killed by a warrior of black and white. Lord Shen assumed it would be an external force, like a panda. He never considered that he, himself, a leucistic peacock with black accents, would cause his own death.
Meant to represent him throwing away his family, and replacing them with the giant cannon, which is a symbol of desperate measures he took to protect himself. It _literally_ symbolizes Shen throwing his family out the window for his creation. I love this movie

The specific thing I love is how Shen uses his tail feathers while fighting, as one of the uses in the real animal is to appear bigger for intimidation. He's so extra, but you can't doubt that it fits him perfectly. Love when Dreamworks clearly does their research.

IMO, Lord Shen is the best Kung Fu Panda villain and one of the most underrated villains. He's sadistic and power hungered to take over China. He's literally the main reason why Po's character arc began.

One of my favourite villains, ever. He's got...A classy style. A unique design. An elegant form of fighting. A great backstory. A *lovely* voice. A beautiful theme...I could go on. If I ever manage to produce some form of media, I'll certainly have a character inspired by Shen.

He 100% was a mess internally and was just hoping his end wasn't by a panda. But when it came down to the end he gave up.

I'm personally a fan of how Shen *immediately* pulls a 180 when he's talking to the soothsayer. "My parents wronged me, and I will right that wrong." "They loved you, they loved you so much that sending you away killed them." Shen then goes instantly from "The past is the most important thing to me" directly into "The dead exist in the past, and I must attend to my future". He still needs the justification to follow through with his genocide, but it's so hollow he can flip it on a dime when it suits him.
He's ultimately a moral-less psychopath that only wants power and immortality but will come up with any excuse on the fly to make himself sound like the hero in his own mind. It's like he comes off as a generic baddie but you realize it's all an act and he's actually waaay more deranged than that
According to TV Tropes, he takes no pleasure in being the villain; and in that moment, he truly regrets his parents' death and realizes just how evil his actions up to his goodbye with the soothsayer are, and he only marches on because he thinks himself too far to turn back (and to be fair, he did commit outright genocide).
@@Wyrmshield It's not power, it's validation, he always thinks he's the victim and therefore wants to prove to a certain someone (on base level his parents, but in reality himself) that he is capable of more than he is given. Shen throughout the film has lived in doubt and always assumed his family set him up to fail but when the Soothsayer blows his fantasy out, Shen feels regret and guilt for all he's done. Shen himself does not want any more suffering to ensue but now it's too late to turn back for him.
We seriously don't talk enough how good Gary Oldman was in voicing Shen. He can be extremely funny and intimidating at the same time, i'm sure he had a great time voicing Shen
Gary Oldman's one of the best living actors. He flawlessly transitioned between Shen's emotional states whilst maintaining his intimidation. Even in comedic moments, there's still something terrifying about him, mostly because of Oldman's voice. Shen isn't exactly the most intimidating creature to look at - the tail feathers make him look bigger but they emphasize beauty as much as intimidation, unless you have a specific trauma like Po did - but combining that voice with his actions and behaviour makes him horrifying. "Part of you here, part of you there, part of you WAAAY over there, STAINING THE WALL!" I also like that there are some moments where Shen's voice wavers. For example "Fire! F-fire at them!" emphasizes his panic and desperation even as he's barking orders. Little moments like that make him feel more alive.
I love how the animators conveyed so much just through Shen's eyes, how he looks genuinely deranged just from the eye movements alone. They cooked so hard with this character.

His destiny said he would lose to a warrior of black and white. He’s white and red. He ended his own life. He successfully changed his destiny, even if the destination was all the same

It'll always be amazing to me how Dreamworks managed to not only make a peacock genuinely intimidating, but make a talking peacock that gets harassed by an overweight panda and a moderately challenged wolf be an absolute badass and fantastic villain. Shen was one hell of a character.

Gary Oldman has long been lauded for his versatility, method, and dedication in his acting. People nowadays are critical of the current trend of having A-list actors star in animated mocies, but Gary Oldman is one big name who could be a fantastic honest voice actor if he applied himself to the craft.
That’s because Shen and Kai were last minute decisions. As were the 5. None of them were supposed to be in the film until the director had to be forced to put them in there. It’s quite insane actually.
8:57 My "favourite"-ish Shen moment is the one that immediately precedes this one. When he is panicked, screaming at the top of his lungs to open fire on the advancing Masters regardless of the collateral, and the Wolf Captain turns to him, throws down his torch and replies, "No." We get a half-second to admire the Wolf's loyalty to his own men, before Shen wordlessly cuts down his ally of thirty years without hesitation and fires the cannon at point blank range, obliterating half his armada. His demented desperation leads him to wipe out his own soldiers and kill someone who has been at his right hand for decades. His vascillation between his sneering noble uppity veneer and the terrified desperation it conceals makes his such an excellent villain.

9:50 i cannot explain how much i fucking LOVE when movies or entertainment in general has this type of parallel coloring. the dark reds and musty grounds that shen was lying in in contrast to poes golden and white is so stunning and the way both of them were fighting in both areas showing how each of them had their good and bad times but it's the way you handle it as a person that makes you grow
This is one of the only animated where I actually notice the directing because of the colors, lighting, and different animation styles. It's so specific that it really shows that the director had a vision. And it's a damn good one at that.

The way he just expects his death, he doesn’t even try to dodge. I think he could have if he had really wanted to. I love Shen he’s absolutely one of my favorite villains. His choreography and sound design are incredible.

Whoever decided to make a peacock this scary and badass deserves some awards. Not only designing a scary villain, but also animating his fighting style must be appreciated. The use of his feathers as a distraction and shield against master Croc was genius.
I agree. Death is terrifying in his own right, but Shen has more personality. He can be funny to watch as well as frightening, while Death is all about the intimidation factor.

He just got tired of all the insults the fearless feline threw his way for all of Puss' nine lives and decided to just kill him then and there with no respawns. He takes the form of a wolf to scare Puss, he repeatedly tortures Puss with his whistles and in general was "cheating", as the gambler puss in that cave said.

Tai Lung went rogue about 20 years before the start of the first movie and there isn't much of a time skip between the two movie. And Tai Lung would of been in his 20's when he went rogue which would put him in his 40's when he escaped prison. That would mean that when Po's people were killed and he was found by Mr. Ping, Tai Lung would of at least been a older child at the time. No older than a teenager at most.
What I find interesting about Shen at 11:01 is that he accepts his fate SO easily, but it's so much deeper than simply "giving in." (1) I think he doesn't hesitate because on the SURFACE, it's not Po the Panda who directly causes his demise, it's the canon that does it, so in that moment in his mind it's almost as thought he "wins" on a technicality. (2) He has been struggling for his entire adult life (even though he essentially caused his own misery) to achieve his personal goals that horrified others, being cast out feeling abandoned and unloved, that the canon falling towards his direction is his chance to finally be free. He has been fighting for so long, that when the opportunity came, he simply accepted it instead of trying to keep fighting (3) The canon falling on him is definitely representative of how all his efforts to defeat Po are what ultimately caused his own demise.
Shen is without a doubt the best Kung Fu Panda villain. He’s evil, sadistic, intimidating, threatening, menacing, vicious, cruel, violent, cunning, remorseless, and vindictive. His design is elegant and graceful, but still badass. I still can’t believe the animators managed to make a peacock look so villainous. His backstory, while not quite as tragic as Tai Lung’s, is still incredibly tragic. He believed his parents never truly loved him when he was banished as a result of his massacre on the half the pandas. He’s also responsible for the death of Po’s mother and Po being separated from his family. In fact, he’s the only villain who serves as a personal burden to Po and made Po nervous during the final battle, as he aggressively attacked him with his feather blades. And of course, I have to commend Gary Oldman for his sensational vocal performance by sounding slimy, cold, malicious, and cruel! 🤩🤩🤩🤩👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🦚❤🔥

Converting basement into dungeon is just him being snide with her. Edit: His big character flaw is that while he has the potential to be a great leader he's very paranoid and insecure. And she's basically trying to tell him he's overreacting and to calm down. She's trying to save Shen from himself so he can be a good ruler like his father was.
Even though Gary Oldman is most recognized as for his live-action performances, his voice-acted roles are easily his most memorable. Viktor Reznov and Lord Shen are characters I will never forget and Oldman made sure of that.

@@jammygamer8961 Nah, Tai did too. He was touched when Shifu saying he’s sorry, throughout most of the movie he believed Shifu lied to him and regret nothing, he hears him apologize and his eyes well-up. It’s not as noticeable as Shen’s, but it is there.
@@Dr.Oofers that was just an emotional reaction. Shen also had that, at least two infact Shens beliefs actually changed which was him finally accepting that Po was fated to beat him. Every other villain was just like "Noooooo" upon being beat but Shen fully accepted it in the end. He's not the only one to actually change in his own film but to change in a positive way too.
I love how as the seer tell him that sending him away killed his parents, you can see the pain in Shen's face and that he doesn't like the bitterness of the truth, so he falls back to believing and repeating his old lies. That is some seriously under appreciated animating.
And this is why the second movie will always be my favorite. He was such a well written villain. The story was darker than the other ones. I watched the 4th movie, and it was really great. Loved it! But nothing could top the 2nd movie for me.
If we learn anything from KFP3, they only hires important VA. But for them to not acknowledges and paid VA for all KFP villain is a crime In KFP3, master croc returns and he got not a single dialogues. Just dumb reptile. One of my favorite things about kung fu panda is its ability to take its “final battle” scenes like 8:20 and sprinkle just enough humor to balance it out, while not being too humorous to diverge from how serious the stakes are.

Scars don’t heal though. That’s a fact. They remain permanently and when conditions are met can quite literally reopen of your body doesn’t have the nutrients to constantly keep them healed.

An interesting part of his backstory is that the Soothsayer goat was apparently a caretaker of his during his youth, so she has the unique position of testing his patience or calling him out.

The specific thing I love is how Shen uses his tail feathers while fighting, as one of the uses in the real animal is to appear bigger for intimidation.

According to TV Tropes, he takes no pleasure in being the villain; and in that moment, he truly regrets his parents' death and realizes just how evil his actions up to his goodbye with the soothsayer are, and he only marches on because he thinks himself too far to turn back (and to be fair, he did commit outright genocide).

Shen throughout the film has lived in doubt and always assumed his family set him up to fail but when the Soothsayer blows his fantasy out, Shen feels regret and guilt for all he's done.
Shen himself does not want any more suffering to ensue but now it's too late to turn back for him.

Gary Oldman's one of the best living actors. He flawlessly transitioned between Shen's emotional states whilst maintaining his intimidation. Even in comedic moments, there's still something terrifying about him, mostly because of Oldman's voice. Shen isn't exactly the most intimidating creature to look at - the tail feathers make him look bigger but they emphasize beauty as much as intimidation, unless you have a specific trauma like Po did - but combining that voice with his actions and behaviour makes him horrifying.

I also like that there are some moments where Shen's voice wavers. For example "Fire! F-fire at them!" emphasizes his panic and desperation even as he's barking orders. Little moments like that make him feel more alive.
Shen is a character who could very easily slide past comedic straight into stupid, but Oldman's fantastic delivery sells it.
I love how the animators conveyed so much just through Shen's eyes, how he looks genuinely deranged just from the eye movements alone.
They cooked so hard with this character.

It'll always be amazing to me how Dreamworks managed to not only make a peacock genuinely intimidating, but make a talking peacock that gets harassed by an overweight panda and a moderately challenged wolf be an absolute badass and fantastic villain. Shen was one hell of a character.

8:57 My "favourite"-ish Shen moment is the one that immediately precedes this one.
When he is panicked, screaming at the top of his lungs to open fire on the advancing Masters regardless of the collateral, and the Wolf Captain turns to him, throws down his torch and replies, "No."
We get a half-second to admire the Wolf's loyalty to his own men, before Shen wordlessly cuts down his ally of thirty years without hesitation and fires the cannon at point blank range, obliterating half his armada. His demented desperation leads him to wipe out his own soldiers and kill someone who has been at his right hand for decades. His vascillation between his sneering noble uppity veneer and the terrified desperation it conceals makes his such an excellent villain.
Shen: "my father's throne. he used to let me play here beside him, promising one day this throne would be mine."

9:50 i cannot explain how much i fucking LOVE when movies or entertainment in general has this type of parallel coloring. the dark reds and musty grounds that shen was lying in in contrast to poes golden and white is so stunning and the way both of them were fighting in both areas showing how each of them had their good and bad times but it's the way you handle it as a person that makes you grow

You get it! I love it when movies take the time to really convey the mood or motivations of characters through more artistic methods.
This is one of the only animated where I actually notice the directing because of the colors, lighting, and different animation styles. It's so specific that it really shows that the director had a vision. And it's a damn good one at that.

Tai Lung went rogue about 20 years before the start of the first movie and there isn't much of a time skip between the two movie. And Tai Lung would of been in his 20's when he went rogue which would put him in his 40's when he escaped prison.
That would mean that when Po's people were killed and he was found by Mr. Ping, Tai Lung would of at least been a older child at the time. No older than a teenager at most.
What I find interesting about Shen at 11:01 is that he accepts his fate SO easily, but it's so much deeper than simply "giving in."
(1) I think he doesn't hesitate because on the SURFACE, it's not Po the Panda who directly causes his demise, it's the canon that does it, so in that moment in his mind it's almost as thought he "wins" on a technicality.
(2) He has been struggling for his entire adult life (even though he essentially caused his own misery) to achieve his personal goals that horrified others, being cast out feeling abandoned and unloved, that the canon falling towards his direction is his chance to finally be free. He has been fighting for so long, that when the opportunity came, he simply accepted it instead of trying to keep fighting
(3) The canon falling on him is definitely representative of how all his efforts to defeat Po are what ultimately caused his own demise.
Im a bigger fan of tai lung but even I cannot deny that shen did not mess around
Shen is without a doubt the best Kung Fu Panda villain. He’s evil, sadistic, intimidating, threatening, menacing, vicious, cruel, violent, cunning, remorseless, and vindictive. His design is elegant and graceful, but still badass. I still can’t believe the animators managed to make a peacock look so villainous. His backstory, while not quite as tragic as Tai Lung’s, is still incredibly tragic. He believed his parents never truly loved him when he was banished as a result of his massacre on the half the pandas. He’s also responsible for the death of Po’s mother and Po being separated from his family. In fact, he’s the only villain who serves as a personal burden to Po and made Po nervous during the final battle, as he aggressively attacked him with his feather blades. And of course, I have to commend Gary Oldman for his sensational vocal performance by sounding slimy, cold, malicious, and cruel!

Probably kept her around out of respect. It was her propechy that started everything, so he wanted her around to prove her wrong. He almost might care for her some as the last remnant of his past or even some kind of caretaker.
Tbh i could see why Shen didn't hurt the soothsayer, because in the official DreamWorks web (Not Wiki, i swear i read this web somewhere in Google) she was his caretaker/nanny when he was a kid, not sure if he cares about her but i think he does (a little bit.)

Idk if you've ever seen it, but there's a deleted scene where he's practicing other intros that got cut with full animation and voice acting, and it's so funny and adorable🤣
And of course when he actually meets Po it's "hey" 😂. I mean I know he wanted to say smth else but just going along with Pos greeting is just funny

Edit: His big character flaw is that while he has the potential to be a great leader he's very paranoid and insecure. And she's basically trying to tell him he's overreacting and to calm down. She's trying to save Shen from himself so he can be a good ruler like his father was.
Even though Gary Oldman is most recognized as for his live-action performances, his voice-acted roles are easily his most memorable.
Viktor Reznov and Lord Shen are characters I will never forget and Oldman made sure of that.
Gary Oldman puts just as much talent in his voice-acting roles as in his live-action performances, and I praise him for that! Too often celebrity voice-casting is so underwhelming and an obvious cash grab

The fact that Shen just gaslight Po into thinking his parents dosent love him, but he’s the one that dosent think his parents love him. But Shen’s parents could’ve kill Shen if they truly hate him. What he did was beyond redemption but they still want to protect him by sending him away.
He was projecting.
I love how intimidating yet weirdly relatable he is. He's the best villain simultaneously because of how he's written and how hilarious he can be.

Lord Shen is, by far, the most ruthless of all the villains and one with the greatest villain design of all the - now - 4 villains in this amazing franchise.

@@jammygamer8961 Nah, Tai did too. He was touched when Shifu saying he’s sorry, throughout most of the movie he believed Shifu lied to him and regret nothing, he hears him apologize and his eyes well-up. It’s not as noticeable as Shen’s, but it is there.

Shens beliefs actually changed which was him finally accepting that Po was fated to beat him.
Every other villain was just like "Noooooo" upon being beat but Shen fully accepted it in the end.
He's not the only one to actually change in his own film but to change in a positive way too.

I love how as the seer tell him that sending him away killed his parents, you can see the pain in Shen's face and that he doesn't like the bitterness of the truth, so he falls back to believing and repeating his old lies. That is some seriously under appreciated animating.

And this is why the second movie will always be my favorite. He was such a well written villain. The story was darker than the other ones. I watched the 4th movie, and it was really great. Loved it! But nothing could top the 2nd movie for me.

One of my favorite things about kung fu panda is its ability to take its “final battle” scenes like 8:20 and sprinkle just enough humor to balance it out, while not being too humorous to diverge from how serious the stakes are.

"O...kay...?" Is such a proper response to po throwing the 'disk of destruction', you can hear that in shen's tone, the line is delivered as "all right, so this is what we're working with here...?"
6:30 That scene showed Shen was more than just a villain, but someone who spent his life believing his parents hated him. It's very made clear the last time he saw them, it was when they banished him and threw him out. That scene gave him more depth and still makes him a very complex villain.
5:10 props to Shen for not straight up murdering the wolf after ruining his moment.
