All 45 DLR Stops in the Fastest Time

  • So there's an unofficial 'record' time for travelling to all 45 stops on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London, of 1 hour and 53 minutes - but I'd never actually given it a go myself.
    Until one morning, I woke up with the urge to do it, and headed out onto the driverless trains to see how fast I could get round ...
    The 'Top Times' for the DLR challenge is here: www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubec...
    Other challenges are on the 'Explorer Ticket' website!

    Some number cruncher at TfL looking at Geoff's travel on the DLR: "Is Geoff doing one of his "Runs" again?"

      I like to think that either they have a number cruncher assigned solely to Geoff, or that whenever one of them notices one of his "runs", the supervisor sighs and pulls out a three-inch thick file with Geoff's name on it

      Before they slowed it down the journey from Royal Albert to Prince Regent was the best, came accelerating down the hill and slammed on the brakes on the curve into the station. If it had just started raining there was a good chance it would slide right through the station.

    As I remember, when the Stratford International branch opened, trains all ran to Beckton, except in the peaks, when they ran to Woolwich Arsenal instead. It wasn't long, however, before they surmised that more people wanted to go to Woolwich, so they re-arranged it so that the whole service went there from Stratford Int. Initially they had Beckton trains running to West Ham and terminating (a slick turnaround in the Stratford bound platform) but this was soon curtailed back to Canning Town. Hence the Canning Town and Tower Gateway trains shown on the DMI at Beckton. Trains terminating at Canning Town from Beckton all do so in the lower level platforms, so that Stratford Int - Beckton passengers dont have to negotiate the passages to the high level services from Tower Gateway, and also it would cause too much congestion to turn them round upstairs.

      The doors open on both sides you're supposed to leave from the right side so you have a clear platform to leave as people are awaiting to board from the other side. During packed times it slows you down if you get off the wrong side as you end up walking on a busy platform of people awaiting to board. There was a plan to open the exit doors first to let people alight from the train and then enable the entrance doors but it was too complicated and costly to re-programme the trains.

  • @itchaii4490
    @itchaii4490 4 ปีที่แล้ว +110

    Hi Geoff,
    Inspired by your attempts at the Tube Challenge, I’m planning to try to visit all 1763 tram stops in Melbourne in the fastest time possible. (The route I’ve come up with so far should take a bit over 25 hours)
    I am considering applying for a Guinness World Record for the challenge, but I am concerned that some of the requirements for evidence could be very difficult to satisfy.
    The evidence guidelines require two independent witnesses to be present for the entire attempt, working in shifts of up to four hours, but there is also a requirement for epic journeys to have two witnesses at the start and end of the journey.
    Are witnesses still required throughout the journey? How have you found witnesses for your attempts?
    Do you have any advice on applying for a world record or generally for completing this type of challenge?
    Thank you very much for your help and the video content you produce.

    I have a challenge for anyone interested... It's on the Prague Metro which is nice & simple. The premise is to board/alight at every station on the network - to add to the spice, all travel between stations must be by metro train & at interchange stations you must board/alight a service on both routes; you can not depart on the same service that you arrive on - i.e. you cannot simply step off & back on at each platform. For added challenge factor you can add in exit to street level with a bonus level for re-entering via alternative entrances where present. At the end of the challenge you then have to drink enough beer to stop "Ukončete prosím výstup a nástup, dveře se zavírají." from rattling around your skull!

    Purple Trains are going to make an epic mess of this if you can use other forms of transport - could go from Canary Wharf to WA and delete a lot of doubling back and maybe use CH to CW to shortcut something.
    When I used to live on the WA branch Stratford Int trains always ran on the Beckton branch, then as soon as I moved to Beckton branch they all started running on the WA branch. When I found that out I was pretty pissed as somebody who uses SI a lot I can tell you. It's also a PITA going the other way - if you start at SI and go Beckton way the Beckton train on high level always hits the station at the same time as the SI-WA branch so you always have to wait the full 10 minutes for a Beckton train. Every time they do those surveys it's my complaint every single time, they still haven't fixed it.
    I'm fairly sure it changed because of all the building around where I used to live around Silvertown - the developers gave DLR a *lot* of money to improve services and instead of improving services what they did is threw Beckton branch under the proverbial bus and presumably pocketed the cash - though the development around me has done the same thing now and ABP is basically a thing now so presumably the services on Beckton branch will improve round about when I move away from the area..

    • @highpath4776
      @highpath4776 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ideally extend the Beckton line to Barking Riverside. delete the Beckton westbound routing - just a shuttle to Gallions Reach ( that is still a desolate place about time some housing was built on tesco's car park !),

    • @streaky81
      @streaky81 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@highpath4776 there's *vast* amounts of housing being built around GR - and the developers have given money to improve services so I doubt they'd be very impressed with that.
