What I find neat about Wimbledon is that the Tram, London Underground District Line, and National Rail trains all stop here, and can be seen side by side (but not with all three at once!)! Elmer's end also has the tram platform next to the National Rail platforms!
Nice one Geoff, i guessed it would not be long before you got around to trying that run! I grew up in the Thornton Heath area, so i can remember when a lot of the current tram network was a proper railway. Also used to explore the old lines and the tunnels after the railway had closed down. Have not lived in the Croydon area since the 90's, so only ever got to see the start of the tram project - the roadworks they caused when being built were a nightmare. Last time i travelled from West Croydon to Wimbledon it was on the old railway, that must have been back in the early 80's, good to see the line had a future.
A feature of West Croydon - Wimbledon line, when it was 'a railway' not a tram, was it seemed to run on a Thursday and come back on Monday and there was never anyone on it. The last time I remember seeing it, it was a two car, slam door stock. Now, it is rare to see a tram with less than a third of its capacity on board. Even the last tram (I don't think they run all night) is always a half full. I plotted out (on GoogleEarth) what I think was a viable (and possible without massive engineering works) single track branch line, from a 'Y' at or near Beddington Lane, across Mitcham Common, next to the road (Mill Lane?) along Commonside East, through a little dog leg at Cedars avenue and thence alongside the railway (a bit snug, it's true, all the way up to a stop end at Edington Road (?) which was the stop end of the old Eardley Road Carriage Sidings. I bet the trams would be packed, even if trams ran alternately from Streatham Vale to Wimbledon and Croydon. It's about time the Croydon network was extended and there have been plans for Anerly (to Crystal Palace Low Level and then up to the Parade - effectively High Level, I think!) and another to Bromley?
@@rogerwhittle2078 It was the old BR blue two car slam door units that i remember. I used to go to Lanfranc school and we used to pop along to Beddington Lane Halt some lunch times to watch the old signalman operate the crossing gates to allow the occasional empty train to trundle past. I agree, a link to the other side of the common would be a good idea - a very built up area. Would be nice to have a link from that area down towards Mitcham, and even better to have a link up to Croydon from there.
Using the TFL journey planner, the total tram travel time for the 39 stops adds up to 85 minutes (including the Birkbeck - Beckenham Junction 'extra' leg). This leaves just 10 minutes for the two 'walking' sections - plus any additional waiting time - in order to beat the 1:35:15 record. Possibly do-able, but I reckon that record won't be beaten anytime soon!.
Geoff, all trams terminating at West Croydon go to New Addington during the day. Beckenham Junction and Elemers End Trams (occasional odd West Croydon) serve only Wimbledon and then reduce service to Therapia Lane and Wimbledon after 20.00 therefore you’d made the error at Reeves which probably would’ve saved you 3-5 minutes!
I wonder if the woman w/ the toilet paper at 7:58 realized it was the same guy she had seen earlier that morning (6:05) as Geoff huffed past. Definitely a coincidence 😂
I live abroad, so I don't know all the stops in London, and sometimes you talk too fast over the map and I wonder if you could have an arrow or something to show what you talked about. And even (or at least) show the map again when you took a different route than you planned, or just with a dot show where you are on the map. I love maps, both normal and transport maps, so I would love this too. I like all your videos and the ones with your girlfriend (?). Keep up the good work!
This was so cool. Finally a challenge within our reach (the others are too big). We will give this a try for fun. The trams, their frequency and price are all absolutely awesome.
Saw this video and was inspired to try it myself. Went on a Sunday afternoon, starting at 5pm. Went to New Addington before taking in the lines to Elmers End, then finishing off at Beckhenam Junction though and this is because the only planning I did was checking the trams were working. I then just got the first tram at the stop and apart from taking the walk from Reeves Corner to George Street I stayed on the trams the whole time. Overall time 2h8mins and 5 seconds. Next time I do it I'm definitely using your route and not doing it on Sunday.

I’ve ridden 2 of 3 (Newark, Jersey City) available in my home state of New Jersey, but I’ll definitely try to catch a Croydon tram the next time I’m able to visit my friends in Sanderstead! When the Crenshaw line opens, along with the new downtown subway, a similar challenge will be possible in Los Angeles. Right now, one major line, the Gold Line, can only be reached by boarding the subway, and the other two lines run outward from downtown with no parallel trackage. Also, there aren't going to be good commuter rail bypasses until the LRT reaches the San Bernardino Metrolink stations like Claremont and Montclair.

Ahhh, finally a tram version of all the stops! Used to go around the whole network but never really tried to time it: from the new timetable I’d go from Wimbledon to Elmers End/Beckenham Junction, then 54 to the other stop I didn’t get to, then change at Sandilands to go round the loop and then on to New Addington. Doesn’t usually take more than 2hours and a bit 🚃
That was the most interesting challenge I have ever seen. You should try doing the same challenge but on another Tram network Like Manchester where I think there is more tram stops there then Croydon. Food for Thought. Otherwise Well Done on making 3rd.👍🚋
Because of the new timetable, the only tram doing the Croydon centre loop is to New Addington and back - all the Elmers End and Beckenham Junction trams go straight through to Wimbledon. As such, the run round to Centrale is always needed if knocking out the two central Croydon stops - so the right decision made there.
I think we do our challenges in Sydney Australia in a more challenging way, we have to start at Sydney Central Station and End at Sydney Central Station, you can not use any other method to get around except the trains and be on a train that allows you to stops at all current 175 stations. Midland Metro could do with a video as it runs down a disued railway and as some secrets. (1) as there about several stops built on the original location of the GWR railway stop. (2) there is a new line in the making coming 2023. Priestfield is the first stop from Wolverhampton on the disued line heading towards Birmingham but in its past Priestfield had four platforms one towards Birmingham and London Paddington, two towards Wolverhampton and onto Liverpool and one towards Dudley-Worcester and onto Oxford.

But as i am now 70 years old i dont think i am going to break any records for xmas my daughter as got me both of your books so looking forward to reading them
Here's a challenge for you, how fast can you do all the Manchester Metrolink stops? Use a System One Bus & Tram ticket so you can avoid backtracking between ends of different lines (e.g. between Bury and Rochdale, use the 471 bus)
@@buksi6342 would make the ticket a tad more expensive but yes! Keep in mind the tram stop and train station are a bit of a walk apart at East Didsbury (even more than transferring between Wigan Wallgate and NorthWestern)
Just caught up with this now, highly entertaining, I must say. Not that I could break any record that needs a change of vehicle (of any kind) at present, lol
I left Croydon the year before the trams were introduced. Hardly recognise any of it now. Reeves Corner to George St. is totally different from what I remember.
I’ll say one thing, Geoff - you’re a damned sight fitter than me! I ‘did’ the Croydon tram network about 4 or 5 years ago, but I wasn’t ‘racing’ around it, so, at a ‘leisurely’ pace, it took about 3 or 4 hours!
Nice one Geoff! I run a brewery in New Addington and a bar at East Croydon so on that section a lot. If you are in need of some refreshment after that run, let me know and I’ll sort you out a beer for the effort 😀

I tried this a couple of months ago (though my goal was not to beat the record but to beat one of my colleagues who is on the leaderboard), co-incidentally by mostly the same route as Geoff's original plan, but managed to mess up by: * Missing my George Street connection when running from Reeves Corner, like Geoff did. * With the next tram from George Street (which was for Wimbledon), not knowing my route well enough and mis-remembering Reeves Corner does not have a stop on both sides, trying to switch sides there, and being taken all the way back to Wandle Park to change sides instead. * Not having such a kind tram driver at Elmer's End when running from my connection to the tram, with the doors starting closing with me two seconds away. At that point I gave up, but plan to try again in the future.
1. Wimbledon to Reeves Corner. 2. Reeves Corner to George Street. 3. George Street to Beckanham Junction. 4. Beckanham Junction to Elmers End. 5. Elmers End to Sandilands. 6. Sandilands to New Addington.

Before the Croydon system opened, a delegation of drivers and management from the Stockholm system came over to visit our depot at Therapia Lane. I was one of the driver/minders on the Croydon system and was part of the team which were testing the infrastructure and 'exercising' the trams from late 1999 until we opened to the public. The Stockholm team explained the differences between their operations and our own. They were also kind enough to present us all with Stockholm tram badges, as well as technical diagrams of their trams (which I still have). Both systems used the same model of tram (Bombardier) although theirs only had three doors each side, whereas ours have four each side. I've now been retired for over twelve years.

5:13 That woman's looking at you like, U aight?
Nah, she is a Geoff super fan in disbelief of seeing him
There are bigger weirdos on the tram than Geoff talking to a camera on the daily, trust me. Something about it attracts nutters.
Geoff, I think you are brilliant. Keep it up
Never knew about this route. Geoff! You just made it easier for me to meet up with one of my best friends.
Thank you for making a Trams video!!!
Your dedication is admirable!
when the trafford line opens on the manchester metrolink you should do the manchester metrolink
I Live in west Yorkshire and come down to London every Monday for the day so far this year i have done all the tube lines from end to end the DLR the overground and the Croydon trams the TLF and am now about 90% of all the stations in zones 1 to 6 out of the main line stations. But as i am now 70 years old i dont think i am going to break any records for xmas my daughter as got me both of your books so looking forward to reading them
😊
Here's a challenge for you, how fast can you do all the Manchester Metrolink stops? Use a System One Bus & Tram ticket so you can avoid backtracking between ends of different lines (e.g. between Bury and Rochdale, use the 471 bus)
I did it in 5h35m16s back in March 2017, to give you a guideline.
Between East Didsbury and Airport you could also get a train, couldn’t you?
@@buksi6342 would make the ticket a tad more expensive but yes! Keep in mind the tram stop and train station are a bit of a walk apart at East Didsbury (even more than transferring between Wigan Wallgate and NorthWestern)
I really like trams on the whole, but London Trams in particular are on my bucket list!
I have been too all 39 tram stops, I love them all
Just caught up with this now, highly entertaining, I must say. Not that I could break any record that needs a change of vehicle (of any kind) at present, lol
Some of those trams is also running in Bergen, Norway and in Aarhus, Denmark.. Nice video!
An amount of time is your answer.
I love London stations the buildings are amazing great video Geoff 👍
Love the way the tram waited for you at birkbeck
I left Croydon the year before the trams were introduced. Hardly recognise any of it now. Reeves Corner to George St. is totally different from what I remember.
0:26 *”on the lunderground network...”*
He also said it in secrets of metropolitan line

Thanks Geoff. I used to live in New Addington.
CronxMark Now theres a gentleman for you!
This is my favourite video by Geoff 👏
1. Wimbledon to Reeves Corner.
2. Reeves Corner to George Street.
3. George Street to Church Street.
4. Church Street to Centrale.
5. Centrale to Elmers End.
6. Elmers End to Birkbeck.
7. Birkbeck to Beckanham Junction.
8. Beckanham Junction to Sandilands.
9. Sandilands to New Addington.
God Geoff you’ve done a marathon
And I am amazed that you kept your sanity through the ENDLESS announcements for 101 different things on the PA system
Great job! Thanks for showing us all the tram stops 👍👍👍
I believe one of these lines used to be part of the regular railway network until the 90s.
I really enjoyed watching this! You should try the same for the Manchester Metrolink!
I tried this a couple of months ago (though my goal was not to beat the record but to beat one of my colleagues who is on the leaderboard), co-incidentally by mostly the same route as Geoff's original plan, but managed to mess up by:
* Missing my George Street connection when running from Reeves Corner, like Geoff did.
And did you do it by now
@miuh cupcake I managed a complete attempt, but it was a couple of minutes slower than my ex-colleague's attempt.
@@DarthCrap aww bummer, but still cool
1. Wimbledon to Reeves Corner.
2. Reeves Corner to George Street.
3. George Street to Beckanham Junction.
4. Beckanham Junction to Elmers End.
5. Elmers End to Sandilands.
6. Sandilands to New Addington.
breathe, breathe!
Excellent
Lol, you know so much and your editing I am jealous of!
"Easy, Easy."
Me: Imagine he made to the platform only to realise that the tram is leaving lol
Trams are just a brilliant excuse to run trains on the road.
Due to the new timetable the train from church street was then going to new addgiton
Someone in my family lives on Belgrave Walk. I see the tram every time I visit there.
We in Stockholm have 5 tram routes here in Stockholm, Sweden. Just tram 30 itself has over 90 thousands pesengers a normal workday it's crazy you can't sometimes not even fit in the trams yes in the long articleulated double carriage tram
Please do a feature on Nottingham Tram Network. It has the only specifically designated station (train or tram) for a hospital. Not near the hospital, or outside on the road opposite the hospital, but actually at the hospital.
Wish we had a tram/DLR service in Cambridge and surrounding suburbs. We have to contend with too many buses, carrying very few people to places that nobody wants to go..
Geoff. If you could do a challenge using only 1 type of croydon tram what one would you choose (Newer Croydon tramlink made in 2012 or the older one)
TH-cam algorithem works well sometimes you watch a video on Nottingham trams and all these good ones come up again
Great video 👏👏 one of your best and Nicholas Owen ITN and BBC newsreader is doing the announcement on board.
I think the problem with Reeves Corner is that by the time you can cross the road, the tram is departing and you need to wait for it
Has anyone done the fastest time on the night tube?
can u see how fast you can visit all the overground and DLR stations pls
