Looks like Abney is back on top again in this category after so long!
Sub 23 is huge.
I’m not a Mario Kart 64 speedrunning expert, but it seems like this might be the last “sub X minutes” milestone, maybe forever. I just don’t see how you save 59 seconds off of this run, unless other major skips are discovered. Even then, it’d be very hard to save that much time.
EDIT: I guess the “best possible time” of 21:14 as shown at the start of the video kinda proves me wrong. Pretty wild to think that even without new tech, there’s still 1:45 that could come off of this run!

This was insane to witness live. GL to both Abney and Kazuya! The race continues.
Unless new strats come out, this is gonna be a hard wr to beat, abney basically got one of the best rng ever, and the only mistakes that we're major was the lightning striked that hit him and the banana he slipped on in banshee, everything else was just depended on rng/shroom usage
@@isuck6049I mean there was probably at least 20 seconds worth of improvement if given that RNG though tbf. (Had blue shell on royal raceway, probably about 10 seconds worth of save on banshee, bowsers castle, and warios stadium). Somewhat slow Luigi's raceway among other things. The run is definitely beatable, but you only get that level of RNG maybe 1%.

To summarize abney's skips wr history, he basically had the sub 28, 27, 26, 25, 24 and now sub 23 speedrun world record in the game for a span of 8 years, he truly has one of, if not the greatest mario kart 64 legacy for sure

What's funny is that the run with the god RNG came after a good 10+ minutes of resetting on Luigi Raceway because the game wouldn't give him shrooms (1/4 chance)
Recently I watched Summoning Salt’s fantastic TH-cam doc regarding Abney and his dominance in MK64 150cc skips and am stunned to see this time after all the attempts.
WR just destroyed and a sub 23 minute run.
What’s sickening is, there were small RNG factors that means it could go lower.
I think whats incredible is not only did he complete the game in 22:58, he also won every single race! Those other drivers didnt stand a chance

Fun fact: about 2 years ago I calculated that getting a run under 23 minutes would pretty much require tying all of the single cup records in one insane run. Well, fast forward a couple years and now we have that insane run. Once again, congrats on the LARGE wr Beck!
