Not a bad guy at all! It is so hard to find mechanics that perform diagnosis like this. Sadly most just throw parts at it at the customer's expense. Wish I could find a knowledgeable AND honest mechanic like him.

As a chap commented below - his local mechanic would have changed everything, probably charged the customer a small fortune and still the car wouldn't start!! And that’s why I decided not to let anyone work on my cars ever again. Got tired of getting taken advantage of. Now I do all my own work, not that I know how but I have a book for each car and TH-cam. Sometimes my cars sit for months while I try to figure out the problem. But I would rather my car sit there and I bum rides for however long it takes than pay out $800 to a mechanic and it not fix the problem or fixed things that didn’t need fixing
Glad that you found this problem. FYI - Isuzu's alternator have a separate circuit to power the fuel pump relay when the alternator is spinning. This is to turn off the fuel pump after a collision. If the alternator is wonky, then the motor will try to start, but will not stay running. It stalls out as soon as you release the starter. Sometimes it is the alternator failing. Sometimes it is the fuel pump failing. My work buddy is crazy about Isuzu and passed on this valuable tip to me and I hope that with posting this comment it helps you or someone else in the future.

Great video. Glad there are honest people out there. Problem with the upright approach is most mechanics would rather charge you for a fuel pump so they make some money off you. You can see it in your channel that people see the true you and support you by subscribing to your channel and watching your videos. I like your approach on fixing cars.
+gereral1 As a professional it embarrasses me when I hear stories about people being conned by others in my trade. Not all of us are dishonest. Some of my customers I have had for 30 plus years because they trust me 100%. I was taught at a very young age to treat people as you wish to be treated and this has helped me build a successful business. Going back to the video, there was a couple of things I may have done slightly differently but that comes down to 40 plus years of experience. Still a nice find, and one many professionals would have had a problem with. I await the results of your other "non runner" with interest. :-)
+Schrodingers Box I do stress differently, not necessarily better. Once a lack of fuel was confirmed, I use a barbecue bottle with a regulator and a longish hose instead of starter fluid. It is way cheaper and dissipates very quickly if you still have a non starter. It is also possible with a bit of trial and error to sit the bottle inside and drive the vehicle this way. I also probably would have started at the relay end of the fuel system and confirmed KOEO prime and directly bypassed the relay before crawling under the vehicle, but then I am in my mid 50s so crawling under a vehicle tends to come later in my process. The end result would have still been the same :-). Please don't take this as criticizing your method as it is not intended this way. Your methodical approach is very similar to my own. I don't like replacing things until I can prove without a doubt that they are faulty.
'Bout freakin' time I found a fellow scientist into car repair and general DIY stuff. This channel is just what I wanted - I hate sorting through 45 minute videos looking for those 30 second tidbits of info I need buried in 44 minutes of people grunting and ratcheting while generally providing no useful information.
Hahaha, not too many people share our perspective. I agree though- it is distrubing how many people out there will spend all day watching guys grunting.
I usually play the video at 2x speed to find what I'm looking for (usually a "How the hell do you get to that bolt to take it off without breaking something?" or tips and tricks for some inspiration and clever thinking that hadn't occurred to me). I'm just a guy looking for a quick answer without fluff because I just want to get the job done. I don't give a shit about mechanic vs tech, tool trucks, or whatever other BS people argue about. I just don't get the automotive culture. I roll my eyes so hard I worry about them leaving all together when I see tool snobs pushing their $400 Snap-On crap that they're still making payments on and bashing Harbor Freight and Craftsman. It just doesn't compute with me. If both tools get the job done, how on earth can you justify a tool that cost $380 more if the end result is the same? Then you have people on the opposite side who pay through the nose because they can't do a simple brake job or oil change. When I started this reply I didn't mean for it to be a rant, but there you have it, lol I think it all pent up as I searched through 10 videos to find out if I had to drop the gas tank to do a fuel pump or if I could go through an access panel in the trunk getting more frustrated with each video because I could've dropped the tank and just looked myself faster. (Didn't want to check in the trunk because it was packed to capacity of all kinds of junk I didn't want to mess with.) I'll be a regular viewer of your channel for both the repairs and humor, as well as scientific diagnoses.
Alex, thank you dude! Your post was therapy. Anybody who read as far as the word "rant" knows it's anything but. You laid it out direct. You're one of the very few people who still practice the rare art of "thinking" in order to learn new info so they gain efficiency in making wiser choices when problem solving. And why are we this way? In the pursuit of happiness, for us and our loved ones! Any excess talking, chrome, or tales of yore impede this goal. And we cant imagine forcing someone to endure a shitty story or advert. in order to share useful info with em. We like to get sh!t done so we can hose-off, put meat on the grill, and chill with the fam & friends. I have come to appreciate videos and people like Mr. Schrodinger who is happy to help his fellow man. It works out for the good in life and many people are so distracted or arrogant they'll never get it. That's why God set a premium on these words "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself". It becomes apparent rather quickly these days who people have love for. ~hint: if somebody talks just way too much in general, and/or throws out two or more stupid non-witty jokes....their neighbor is in every mirror they look at. @@SchrodingersBox hey i have a 07 navigator and its having almost the same issue. so far ive followed your steps. in conclusion ik im not getting any fuel to the car and before that i actually checked my fuses in which i discovered that some of my pcm sensors including my fuel pump diode arent getting power. My car started temp. after spraying starter fluid and then died. Please lend me your advice. Thank you so much!
@Schrodingersbox 6:21. Are 30 and 87 the control circuit? I thought they were secondary/ switched/ load circuit. As opposed to the primary/ signal/ control circuit

You are an honest and smart mechanic, you should have at least charged him $50.00 which would have been well worth it. I don't mind paying a mechanic his normal rate, but not when they fail to do a good job!! UGH.

I think you actually done really well there Matt, just one comment, with your normal circuit tester and the pump plugged in you could by pass the relay check for current there and put the tester on the ground wire, if you have a bad ground the tester would light on the ground side....bit like a headlight that doesn't work...Fred.
Absolutely amazing’ I bet dude returned to work happy knowing that the hours he spent standing on his feet working did not have to be exchanged with purchasing new parts and labor. He already bought a pump. God bless you!
hey Matt this is another great video like the ones before. sometimes I get customers at my shop where they have spent hundreds of dollars and they get tow to my shop and it turns out to be simple fix. at that point my intention would be no charge,but I have and overhead and a family to support. so at least I charge a small fee. again I've learn a lot from your other videos.

Dang, it's just too bad there are many mechanics out there that will take advantage of the situation and lie and create another "problem" to the diagnosis then charge you an arm and a leg for it. It all comes down to morals, dignity and honesty! If you don't have any morals or conscience, one would lie and take advantage of the customer and basically steal that way. It's so hard to find a good and honest mechanic! Wished all mechanics was like this guy!
Now you're what I call a customer friendly mechanic rather than a rip you off mechanic. I'd donate some money to you just for your time if I were the guy that owned the vehicle. Too bad there aren't more of your type around.
Thanks for the video. The one thing I would have recommended would be to always check the main ground connection by the battery. Manufacturers almost always paint the car, then drill a whole through the paint, and thread the whole. The master ground connector for the whole vehicle is grounded to the frame with a bolt going through an eyelet, so the only connection is the threads of the bolt in the whole. This will always corrode over time and cause intermittent issues with various electrical systems. Even if it is not the problem, it is always a quick recommendation to pull the master ground connection off, sand the paint off of the frame, then sand the eyelet to the ground connector, then coat the connection with battery terminal grease and reconnect. That way you fix or prevent most all issues related to poor grounding conditions.
in general good advice however we know from the very beginning this cannot possibly be a ground problem so I didn’t go that direction since there was no need to.

Scanners can help lead a mechanic to the area of a problem. It can show other problems. It all depends on the problem. Sometimes basic troubleshooting is faster than a scanner. Scanners can tell you a part is bad when it's good like an O2 sensor is rich when really it's the mixture. One part makes it appear that a part is bad. A ISC motor can throw Ox. sensor codes. Mechanics see the code and he says ''It SAYS the O2 is bad but is it?'' OTC has or had a break-out box to check circuits with a DVDM . It hooks up to the computer and you measure voltages and resistance with a DVDM. It can check grounds and open circuits. There are production change bulletins (PCB) that tell you about updated parts like head gaskets and head bolts.I think the company is All-Data. The videos are GREAT! Keep it up! A REAL mechanic can figure things out with even a paper clip!
Yes of course all that's true- but the question is: how would a scanner have been useful in THIS application? You have a cranking no start with confirmed cam and crank hall effect inputs. Exactly what PIDs would you have used to determine the direction given that starting point?
you definitely know what the hell you're doing! man wish I knew someone like you here to help because you're right most mechanics will just go on and change parts they assume is the problem but it wasn't and they keep doing it until they find the problem which puts you out of money from buying all the unnecessary parts in the first place

Great video, I have no trouble with taking things a part and putting them back together but when it comes to electrical problems I have yet to completely comprehend any of it, I would love to have your knowledge of trouble shooting electrical, great work man.
That's the purpose of this channel! Hopefully you'll adapt and develop "real skills". pretty much everyone in line returning their alternator because it didn't fix their problem has no problem installing one lol!

Thanks to this video I was able to get my car back up and running mine ended up been a fuel pump so went and got one. That one ended up been bad as well so I went to another auto part store and got another one and that one worked and my started right up. I sat and watched your video probably a good 20 times so thanks again for the tips and your fast tec technique

Ok, so the update with my car was that I really never found the problem to my car but my dad over rode everything as far as the problem. The alternator was good, the battery was good too and so was the starter but the car STILL wouldn't start so what he did was installed a wire to the solenoid and the battery and installed a push start button to start the car and fortunately it worked!
Such an awesome video. Learning a lot of electrical without assumption of bad parts. Proves that the obvious must still be confirmed. I would have thrown a pump in too if the other stuff hadn't been checked. Makes me think twice about part replacement.
Amazing. Loved watching the fast diag... I have a neat test light. It shows voltage and has a red/green light depending if you are on positive or ground. Watching you make me want to fix something. A guy came to me late one night and asked if I could fix his brake light. I don't have a garage but told him to get a brake light switch and come back in the morning. We will do a proper diagnoses before putting it in. Went thru and found out he pulled the fuse to the brake light cause the horn was on the same circuit. So it wasn't working neither. Found out the reason the fuse was pulled was because the horn had a short on the wiring. So I put in a fuse. Got his brake lights working and told him not to hit the horn button and if he wants we will figure it out to. He had work that day so couldn't check on it. He wants me to put brakes on it so maybe I'll do the horn then. Who knows. I hate spending money on stuff I don't need so I try to be a part of the 2% club... My dad had an issue with his headlights. Took his van to a garage and they said it needed a new steering column. 300+ dollars later and still the same issue. Got the van back and I was like 16 or 17 but I tried. I went thru the wiring and found the wires at the dimmer switch was bad. It was a 90s caravan so the switch was actuated by a rod and the switch was at the very bottom of the column. Easy access. I fixed it and no issues till the van gave up... Mechanics who are parts changers give the rest a bad name.
Great job, Matt! My favorite test was the starting fluid and paper clip starter bypass test. Beautiful and simple! I think the test light should have spent some more time at the relay box...you can definitively check both control and load side in 2 seconds :)
+motoYam82 Yes no doubt test light could have been used in all applications on this one. It's funny- I assume you have your testlight right on the top of your toolbox to reach for while I have my DVOM there so it;s what I grabbed!
Most of us know why shops will install a new pump (or so they say) and charge the hard working person at least 350-500 bucks. all they might do is fix the wire like you did. I have been a long time veiwer of your channel so thanks...... With that said I am redoing my sisters brakes because of a pinched brake line which led to a stuck caliper (work performed at a local shop) they said her brake pads were on backwards.... what horseshit, so i am putting in a new front brake line and new caliper because the boot in the caliper melted. And then charged her 650 for a rear main seal...... guess what.....yep still leaks like before. I was going to do it for her but I had my back fused and now I am kinda able to work on things right now. Now less then 6 months after the repairs I am doing it all over again, the right was by myself. If your not careful you will be had!!!!!! and most people never know they were cornholed...... Just my thought, sorry for being long winded but there are preditors out there. It was nice that you offered to pick up that guy after you went to King Super....LOL

Working in my own business also in a trade area I've learnt that my time and expertise was worth at least something, it doesnt have to be a full blown invoice to people but at least a few bucks, people don't mind and alot of the time they actually said to me it was worth more and gave me more, especially older people. Those people always come back to you for more great service too.
I work for a vintage car part company, selling stuff to gearheads all day. I'm privileged to get to pick the brains of several brilliant guys who operate as techs in our company. I, however, am not one of them. And I'm trying to diagnose a crank no start by myself. It's currently 34⁰ and dark outside, I have no tools, garage, or lights, but I do have a few bits of knowledge going for me. I have tach readings during turnover. I have an easily turning engine that just won't grab. I have a 3/4 full tank full of gas (which automatically means its the fuel pump, right? Lol) and I have fuel pump engagement, as I can hear it running when I turn off the ignition. Tomorrow, if my prayers and blood sacrifice to the mechanical gods go unanswered, I'll check terminals and cables (hard to do in poor lighting) and check fuel pressure. As soon as I find the rail. One of my work tech buddies thinks I might have low voltage as my lights dim just a bit when cranking. I think it always did that anyway, but of course I don't remember for sure. I don't want it to be a battery issue as it's only a year old. If it is a battery issue, and not just the cables or terminals, I'd be worried about the alternator having caused it. Equally worrisome is if it's a cam sensor. Long story short, I can't really fix any of this by myself regardless. I lack the tools and the know how. But I'm hoping beyond hope for something not expensive, and not cascading. 🤞 Thank you so much for this video. I appreciate all the knowledge that you've shared.
They need more diy Mechanics in the world like you guy. You where honest with your customer and didn't try to go in his pockets for a pretty much simple job, andddd... tried to help him retrieve his vehicle back to him even though you had to pick up groceries. (Mannn it just doesn't get any better than that! ) just got my subscription and im im support YOU by purchasing some of merch!
There is a lot of knowledge that goes into fixing cars and sometimes a lot of expensive tools are required. Techs don't get payed for the time they work and if they do it's peanuts with a commission added in to try and make up for the peanuts. But most places it's flat rate pay for the technician (basically piece work on a clock). The entire auto repair industry is designed in a way that does not promote quality repairs. The pay plans promote Half-Assery, puts the technician on a time crunch for everything. It's in part the customers fault as well as a lot of shady repair facilities everyone wants it done cheap and fast.. Cheap, Fast, and Good. I tend to find that you can only have 2 out of the 3. Yes it does suck. Customer should not have to suffer because of this. But until people are ready to pay god money for good work. Your likely to just end up with people throwing parts at your car. End Rant
+Auto Fix Pal You get what you payed for:) I went for a job interview to a garage and the boss told me they want the job to be done fery fast and very good (they are cheap too). That was exactly my thought - you can have all 3. I didn't accept that job offer.
I feel you man. We get paid jack shit, and are always rushed to get stuff done. I'm not saying there isn't hack mechanics, there are tons of them. But the blame really lies mostly on the system. People will never want to pay high prices to get their car fixed, like you said they want it cheap, fast and good. All you can really do is open your own place and build a customer base by doing quality work or get hired at a place that already has that reputation. I'm lucky with that, boss is chill, not always rush rush rush, it's more like get it done right, not fast. Makes for a much better work environment.
Learning more with every video I watch. I was just going to throw a new cam, and a crank sensor at my sons 93 Grand Prix. What a waste of money, if it turns out to be the coil pack, or a bad wire. For sure the process of elimination, is the way to go.

Glad that you found this problem. FYI - Isuzu's alternator have a separate circuit to power the fuel pump relay when the alternator is spinning. This is to turn off the fuel pump after a collision. If the alternator is wonky, then the motor will try to start, but will not stay running. It stalls out as soon as you release the starter. Sometimes it is the alternator failing. Sometimes it is the fuel pump failing. My work buddy is crazy about Isuzu and passed on this valuable tip to me and I hope that with posting this comment it helps you or someone else in the future.

Great video. Glad there are honest people out there. Problem with the upright approach is most mechanics would rather charge you for a fuel pump so they make some money off you. You can see it in your channel that people see the true you and support you by subscribing to your channel and watching your videos. I like your approach on fixing cars.

Not all of us are dishonest.
Some of my customers I have had for 30 plus years because they trust me 100%.
I was taught at a very young age to treat people as you wish to be treated and this has helped me build a successful business.
Going back to the video, there was a couple of things I may have done slightly differently but that comes down to 40 plus years of experience. Still a nice find, and one many professionals would have had a problem with.

Once a lack of fuel was confirmed, I use a barbecue bottle with a regulator and a longish hose instead of starter fluid.
It is way cheaper and dissipates very quickly if you still have a non starter.
It is also possible with a bit of trial and error to sit the bottle inside and drive the vehicle this way.
I also probably would have started at the relay end of the fuel system and confirmed KOEO prime and directly bypassed the relay before crawling under the vehicle, but then I am in my mid 50s so crawling under a vehicle tends to come later in my process.
The end result would have still been the same :-).
Please don't take this as criticizing your method as it is not intended this way. Your methodical approach is very similar to my own.
I don't like replacing things until I can prove without a doubt that they are faulty.
'Bout freakin' time I found a fellow scientist into car repair and general DIY stuff. This channel is just what I wanted - I hate sorting through 45 minute videos looking for those 30 second tidbits of info I need buried in 44 minutes of people grunting and ratcheting while generally providing no useful information.
Hahaha, not too many people share our perspective. I agree though- it is distrubing how many people out there will spend all day watching guys grunting.
I usually play the video at 2x speed to find what I'm looking for (usually a "How the hell do you get to that bolt to take it off without breaking something?" or tips and tricks for some inspiration and clever thinking that hadn't occurred to me). I'm just a guy looking for a quick answer without fluff because I just want to get the job done. I don't give a shit about mechanic vs tech, tool trucks, or whatever other BS people argue about. I just don't get the automotive culture. I roll my eyes so hard I worry about them leaving all together when I see tool snobs pushing their $400 Snap-On crap that they're still making payments on and bashing Harbor Freight and Craftsman. It just doesn't compute with me. If both tools get the job done, how on earth can you justify a tool that cost $380 more if the end result is the same? Then you have people on the opposite side who pay through the nose because they can't do a simple brake job or oil change. When I started this reply I didn't mean for it to be a rant, but there you have it, lol I think it all pent up as I searched through 10 videos to find out if I had to drop the gas tank to do a fuel pump or if I could go through an access panel in the trunk getting more frustrated with each video because I could've dropped the tank and just looked myself faster. (Didn't want to check in the trunk because it was packed to capacity of all kinds of junk I didn't want to mess with.) I'll be a regular viewer of your channel for both the repairs and humor, as well as scientific diagnoses.
Alex, thank you dude! Your post was therapy. Anybody who read as far as the word "rant" knows it's anything but. You laid it out direct. You're one of the very few people who still practice the rare art of "thinking" in order to learn new info so they gain efficiency in making wiser choices when problem solving. And why are we this way? In the pursuit of happiness, for us and our loved ones! Any excess talking, chrome, or tales of yore impede this goal. And we cant imagine forcing someone to endure a shitty story or advert. in order to share useful info with em. We like to get sh!t done so we can hose-off, put meat on the grill, and chill with the fam & friends. It works out for the good in life and many people are so distracted or arrogant they'll never get it. That's why God set a premium on these words "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself". It becomes apparent rather quickly these days who people have love for. ~hint: if somebody talks just way too much in general, and/or throws out two or more stupid non-witty jokes....their neighbor is in every mirror they look at. I think you actually done really well there Matt, just one comment, with your normal circuit tester and the pump plugged in you could by pass the relay check for current there and put the tester on the ground wire, if you have a bad ground the tester would light on the ground side....bit like a headlight that doesn't work...Fred.

hey Matt this is another great video like the ones before. sometimes I get customers at my shop where they have spent hundreds of dollars and they get tow to my shop and it turns out to be simple fix. at that point my intention would be no charge,but I have and overhead and a family to support. so at least I charge a small fee. again I've learn a lot from your other videos.

Dang, it's just too bad there are many mechanics out there that will take advantage of the situation and lie and create another "problem" to the diagnosis then charge you an arm and a leg for it. It all comes down to morals, dignity and honesty! If you don't have any morals or conscience, one would lie and take advantage of the customer and basically steal that way. It's so hard to find a good and honest mechanic! Wished all mechanics was like this guy!
Now you're what I call a customer friendly mechanic rather than a rip you off mechanic. I'd donate some money to you just for your time if I were the guy that owned the vehicle. Too bad there aren't more of your type around.
Thanks for the video. The one thing I would have recommended would be to always check the main ground connection by the battery. Manufacturers almost always paint the car, then drill a whole through the paint, and thread the whole. The master ground connector for the whole vehicle is grounded to the frame with a bolt going through an eyelet, so the only connection is the threads of the bolt in the whole. This will always corrode over time and cause intermittent issues with various electrical systems. Even if it is not the problem, it is always a quick recommendation to pull the master ground connection off, sand the paint off of the frame, then sand the eyelet to the ground connector, then coat the connection with battery terminal grease and reconnect. That way you fix or prevent most all issues related to poor grounding conditions.
in general good advice however we know from the very beginning this cannot possibly be a ground problem so I didn’t go that direction since there was no need to.

Scanners can help lead a mechanic to the area of a problem. It can show other problems. It all depends on the problem. Sometimes basic troubleshooting is faster than a scanner. Scanners can tell you a part is bad when it's good like an O2 sensor is rich when really it's the mixture. One part makes it appear that a part is bad. A ISC motor can throw Ox. sensor codes. Mechanics see the code and he says ''It SAYS the O2 is bad but is it?'' OTC has or had a break-out box to check circuits with a DVDM . It hooks up to the computer and you measure voltages and resistance with a DVDM. It can check grounds and open circuits. There are production change bulletins (PCB) that tell you about updated parts like head gaskets and head bolts.I think the company is All-Data. The videos are GREAT! Keep it up! A REAL mechanic can figure things out with even a paper clip!
Yes of course all that's true- but the question is: how would a scanner have been useful in THIS application? You have a cranking no start with confirmed cam and crank hall effect inputs. Exactly what PIDs would you have used to determine the direction given that starting point?
you definitely know what the hell you're doing! man wish I knew someone like you here to help because you're right most mechanics will just go on and change parts they assume is the problem but it wasn't and they keep doing it until they find the problem which puts you out of money from buying all the unnecessary parts in the first place

Thanks to this video I was able to get my car back up and running mine ended up been a fuel pump so went and got one. That one ended up been bad as well so I went to another auto part store and got another one and that one worked and my started right up. I sat and watched your video probably a good 20 times so thanks again for the tips and your fast tec technique

Ok, so the update with my car was that I really never found the problem to my car but my dad over rode everything as far as the problem. The alternator was good, the battery was good too and so was the starter but the car STILL wouldn't start so what he did was installed a wire to the solenoid and the battery and installed a push start button to start the car and fortunately it worked!
In that case the problem is now obvious, right? Since it works with the bypass....
Such an awesome video. Learning a lot of electrical without assumption of bad parts. Proves that the obvious must still be confirmed. I would have thrown a pump in too if the other stuff hadn't been checked. Makes me think twice about part replacement.

Amazing. Loved watching the fast diag... I have a neat test light. It shows voltage and has a red/green light depending if you are on positive or ground. Watching you make me want to fix something. A guy came to me late one night and asked if I could fix his brake light. I don't have a garage but told him to get a brake light switch and come back in the morning. We will do a proper diagnoses before putting it in. Went thru and found out he pulled the fuse to the brake light cause the horn was on the same circuit. So it wasn't working neither. Found out the reason the fuse was pulled was because the horn had a short on the wiring. So I put in a fuse. Got his brake lights working and told him not to hit the horn button and if he wants we will figure it out to. He had work that day so couldn't check on it. He wants me to put brakes on it so maybe I'll do the horn then. Who knows. I hate spending money on stuff I don't need so I try to be a part of the 2% club... My dad had an issue with his headlights. Took his van to a garage and they said it needed a new steering column. 300+ dollars later and still the same issue. Got the van back and I was like 16 or 17 but I tried. I went thru the wiring and found the wires at the dimmer switch was bad. It was a 90s caravan so the switch was actuated by a rod and the switch was at the very bottom of the column. Easy access. I fixed it and no issues till the van gave up... Mechanics who are parts changers give the rest a bad name.

I think the test light should have spent some more time at the relay box...you can definitively check both control and load side in 2 seconds :)

Most of us know why shops will install a new pump (or so they say) and charge the hard working person at least 350-500 bucks. all they might do is fix the wire like you did. I have been a long time veiwer of your channel so thanks...... With that said I am redoing my sisters brakes because of a pinched brake line which led to a stuck caliper (work performed at a local shop) they said her brake pads were on backwards.... what horseshit, so i am putting in a new front brake line and new caliper because the boot in the caliper melted. And then charged her 650 for a rear main seal...... guess what.....yep still leaks like before. I was going to do it for her but I had my back fused and now I am kinda able to work on things right now. Now less then 6 months after the repairs I am doing it all over again, the right was by myself. If your not careful you will be had!!!!!! and most people never know they were cornholed...... Just my thought, sorry for being long winded but there are preditors out there. It was nice that you offered to pick up that guy after you went to King Super....LOL

Working in my own business also in a trade area I've learnt that my time and expertise was worth at least something, it doesnt have to be a full blown invoice to people but at least a few bucks, people don't mind and alot of the time they actually said to me it was worth more and gave me more, especially older people. I work for a vintage car part company, selling stuff to gearheads all day. I'm privileged to get to pick the brains of several brilliant guys who operate as techs in our company. I, however, am not one of them. And I'm trying to diagnose a crank no start by myself. It's currently 34⁰ and dark outside, I have no tools, garage, or lights, but I do have a few bits of knowledge going for me. I have tach readings during turnover. I have an easily turning engine that just won't grab. I have a 3/4 full tank full of gas (which automatically means its the fuel pump, right? Lol) and I have fuel pump engagement, as I can hear it running when I turn off the ignition. Tomorrow, if my prayers and blood sacrifice to the mechanical gods go unanswered, I'll check terminals and cables (hard to do in poor lighting) and check fuel pressure. As soon as I find the rail. One of my work tech buddies thinks I might have low voltage as my lights dim just a bit when cranking. I think it always did that anyway, but of course I don't remember for sure. I don't want it to be a battery issue as it's only a year old. If it is a battery issue, and not just the cables or terminals, I'd be worried about the alternator having caused it. Equally worrisome is if it's a cam sensor.
Long story short, I can't really fix any of this by myself regardless. I lack the tools and the know how. But I'm hoping beyond hope for something not expensive, and not cascading. 🤞

There is a lot of knowledge that goes into fixing cars and sometimes a lot of expensive tools are required. Techs don't get payed for the time they work and if they do it's peanuts with a commission added in to try and make up for the peanuts. But most places it's flat rate pay for the technician (basically piece work on a clock). The entire auto repair industry is designed in a way that does not promote quality repairs. The pay plans promote Half-Assery, puts the technician on a time crunch for everything. It's in part the customers fault as well as a lot of shady repair facilities everyone wants it done cheap and fast.. Cheap, Fast, and Good. I tend to find that you can only have 2 out of the 3.
Yes it does suck. Customer should not have to suffer because of this. But until people are ready to pay god money for good work. Your likely to just end up with people throwing parts at your car. End Rant

I feel you man. We get paid jack shit, and are always rushed to get stuff done. I'm not saying there isn't hack mechanics, there are tons of them. But the blame really lies mostly on the system. People will never want to pay high prices to get their car fixed, like you said they want it cheap, fast and good. All you can really do is open your own place and build a customer base by doing quality work or get hired at a place that already has that reputation. I'm lucky with that, boss is chill, not always rush rush rush, it's more like get it done right, not fast. Makes for a much better work environment.
$100 for your time and another $50 for picking up and you are a great guy sir. UP, and SUB.

Thanks man. The truth is most people just want to see how to replace a starter rather than learn how to diagnose if you need one. The fact I don't have millions of views means I am reaching the right audience, as far as I am concerned.

+John McLaren I'm sure you'd agree that if you are in that situation it is even more important to take a scientific approach. If you have time to goof around or pick up the owner when his car died a mile away then that would be the time to guess and just hope its fixed!
