Stumbled across this video when I was wanting to learn more about this CVT versus others.
I have one in the GT trim, picked it up last month. I was always the hugest CVT hater which is why I disregarded the old WRX but I need an auto (with manual shift) because of my disability.
I decided to give it a shot with all the hype Subaru was talking about it and love it. I can't speak for leaving it in drive, because I've never driven it that way since I exclusively use the paddles but it is truly a fantastic transmission, not just as far as CVTs go but as far as *any* transmission goes. I owned a 10-speed Mustang a while ago, which is generally considered to be a great transmission, and this is much better. Driving it with the paddles is indistinguishable to me from a DCT and I would never believe it was a CVT if nobody told me. I'm extremely happy with it.
The only downside to me is that Cobb still hasn't figured out tuning support for it since it's so different. They supported the old WRX CVT which just goes to show. Praying they crack the code soon. While I'm largely very happy with the stock performance, I'm starting to slowly get that itch to get more power out. Already got all my other mods done.
What engine mods you suggest for the Cvt, I’ve just been doing suspension & wheels & cosmetics, you get the Cobb access port yet?
really appreciate this review so I know I didn’t make a mistake buying my 22 wrx cvt limited.
great review man thanks for the advice ! Receiving my '23 premium - cvt in ceramic white this weekend
Thank you and that is good to hear. I hope you get many years of enjoyment out of it.
where I live is a busy city and hate driving here even with an automatic. I would only get manual to improve my driving on twistys, track or open country roads
Thanks for this video. I just took my WRX GT into the mountains and ran it with some fast friends. I was nervous about the car, because I had two STIs (2017 base, 2018 Limited) prior to this car. Even though I have been driving manual transmissions for over 40 years, I never really mastered the heel toe rev matching downshift, so I was looking for an automatic. What I really wanted was a DCT. I test drove different cars including a Rousch. A test drive and Subaru’s guaranteed trade in talked me into the WRX GT. During the break in period I was regretting trading an STI for this very quiet, sedate sedan and worried about how it do in the mountains.
It turns out, I have the same impression you have in the video. In Sport +, the car downshifts aggressively into the corners, lots of fun. For the most part, it keeps torque and comes out of the corners just fine, but occasionally felt ‘stuck’ at 5000 RPM and seemed like it did not want to upshift. Since the next corner was really close, this was usually not an issue and I let it do its thing, but sometimes it did feel like it was bogging down. Solution was to just paddle shift up a gear. The SPT fell right back into line.
I honestly think this car has better turn in than the STI’s did. The handling is incredible. The GT has the adjustable suspension which is great. I can dial it down for everyday driving. This is my daily driver and feels more grown up. I’m in my 60s, so I appreciate the more refined feel and features. I just hope the SPT will hold up to the type of driving I do on the weekends.
Thank you for the detailed comment and insight. Glad to see you are enjoying it as it is meant to be and hopefully it continues to treat you well for many years to come. It did surprise me and was far better than anticipated. Wish it wouldn't have had snow tires on it at the time, but beggars can't be choosers lol.
Disable the pre collision braking feature. This disables the car’s pre collision throttle management feature which varies throttle response and power output when a car is up ahead. It’s annoying and leads to inconsistent throttle application when it’s enabled. The car feels laggy when it’s enabled. I disable it through the menu every time I drive the car and the throttle and engine output are consistent the whole time I’m driving.
The newer cvts that are coming out are great
This one did surprise me. Hopefully down the road they can refine it that much more.
If only we could get over the weird feeling of a true CVT. They were banned from F1 for being a “cheat” and everyone would need it. They keep the car at peak torque all the time. So if we could get rid of the fake shifting and get over the weird feel of a car accelerating while sometimes the RPMs are dropping, imagine how the WRX would be through the twisty mountain roads. I love my WRX GT, but downshifting in Sport+ is aggressive and can be abrupt. It’s fun, I just hope the SPT can take it long term. I imagine that if they got rid of the fake 8 speed effect, it would be like driving a Tesla with the regressive braking dialed up. (Yes, I drove a Tesla this way. It’s not quite one pedal driving).
i am sold on these wrx.. idk if i will get one but yeah i hear all good reviews about this car.. most actualy prefer the "spt cvt" trans over manual.. you comming from an sti you sound sold also..
I did come away impressed with it for the time I had it (roughly an hour or so). If they came out with a full on DCT and had that lightning fast crisp responsiveness I feel it could be a game changer (for full on sport driving) for the WRX in the future.
You should review a Manual 2022 one soon 😊
Yessir, I'm going to try to put a feeler out there if someone local would be willing to offer up a manual one for review. I could get one from a dealership, but around here they want to ride with you and it would be a watered down experience.
Hopefully someone will be cool with it.
You need a drift car thru those mountains 👍
Yea man, they are a real treat when it snows lol
Absolutely
Is this the GT trim?
This was the Premium trim level.
@@spdkills83 is there a level below that is also cheaper for a automatic one
@@spdkills83 is there a trim lower then the primium with another automatic?
@@tylermarcinick3472 You can get the base trim level with the auto. The MSRP with no other options for that setup on Subaru's website is $33,475 (USD)
With the cay vat tay 😂
How smooth is the ride?
The ride was smooth. It would be a pleasant daily driver.
@@spdkills83 I’m sure the winter tires helped in that regard too. Can you let us know which tires were on? And thank you!
@@AdamJayTechnoElectro The snow tires were on in the video. They would help with the ride quality to some degree I feel.
I do feel that even without them the new WRX would ride well and be a good daily. However, I cannot confirm that 100% as I've not driven one with OEM tires.
Thanks for asking.
Unbearable commentary.
