      Bulletproof? Sure are a lot of 2GR-FKS engines with oil pumps failing catastrophically. And cracked blocks with no histiry of past overheating and dealer claiming its a bad casting. Lots of Tundra and Highlander owners with destroyed engines. This engine was a downgrade from the 4.0

    I have a 2020 OR with the 3.5 Auto. Sure, it's no race car, but once you learn the power band of the engine / transmission, it only has gear hunting issues going up long, steep hills, like over a mile long where it roars along in 5th gear. I use the ECT option when towing to tighten up the shifting. My only real gripe is the gas mileage, which really sucks for a 3.5l V6. It's been a very solid truck. The only glitch in 2.5 years was a bad low pressure fuel pump on a recall.

Scotty sez very few mechanic's can do this work nowdays..(Head warped?...Block warped?)...Could the heads be re-torqued with new head bolts? @@SirUlrichVonHamburglar The 3.5 in the 16+ Tacomas is a "Atichison Cycle" engine which is entirely different than the 3.5 in the 07+ Siennas. I find it kinda odd Toyota has both a 3.5 and 4.0 that make almost the same amount of power in their current form. 3.5 278HP/265Tq. 4.0 270HP/278Tq. Why not just have one or the other?

    • @TDTVGarage
      @TDTVGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do not offer them in the Tacoma simultaneously. The 4.0 was replaced in 2016 by the 3.5 for North American production due to competitive reasons, as well as EPA and CAFE requirements. Because the 4Runner and its 4.0 is made in Japan and sold in global markets (and sold in much smaller numbers in North America) it did not make financial sense to change it over to the 3.5 for just our market. And....back when those decisions were made Toyota believed the 4Runner would have been phased out of our market shortly after the FJ Cruiser was.

    One glaring problem with the 3rd gen tacoma is that it won't hold overdrive on the highway. It downshifts continously, very annoying. The 3.5L the transmission and the rear end gears are not matched very well. This truck needs 4.88 gears. I have 2019 trd off road. I avoid the highway. I only drive on the highway when it's necessary. I've had several tacoma trucks with the 4.0L. They ran much better on the highway than this one.

      I agree with you, the drive train sucks. TSB-0092-20 is the software update that might help you. The gearing was designed for fuel economy, but it just don't work, unless you drive down hill or have tail wind. The engine has no torque at cruising speeds, the last gears are OD so, it is always down shifting to maintain the speed.
