      @@swooopg I just ordered one off of RevZilla. It got great reviews. The lock may be easy to pick but then again I doubt there will be a lot of guys trying to pick the lock. That said, I really don't think there are too many locks out there that will pass the lock pick lawyer's seal of approval. I like to think of these as a deterrent as opposed to the best way to secure your bike. Because, let's face it, if they REALLY want to steal your bike then they will find a way to steal your bike. I would use this as a deterrent and have full insurance in case it is stolen. That's just my personal opinion though. If somebody wants your shit, they will find a way.

    I have this lock on my bike, it's very very soft metal. It has pitting and indentations all over it just from rolling around in the plastic pillion compartment. So your Zinc prediction is probably right.

      Somewhere where you can find other bikes with no disc lock at all. This lock is great for people who live in cities like mine. It's just the perfect level of "fuck off" that will make a thief find a different bike with no lock at all. (Which is most other bikes in my city. They only lock their bikes with the handlebar lock that you can kick to break 95% of the time.)

    and it saved my new ZX14. they unlocked the bars and cut my chain and this was all that kept it where it was just because they didn't see it or they happened to not have a tool for it.
    it mangled it when they tried to roll my bike but praise jesus it saved me $22,000

      You have a 22k bike and you use a cheap lock like this? This lock is meant for scooters that have brake discs with small holes where you can't fit a lock with a bigger pin

  • @molonlabe9602

    People get hung up on how easy the LPL can pick these on TH-cam. I would venture to say that this lock would defeat or at least discourage all but the most sophisticated bike thieves. Just making it harder to steal your bike with one of these will force most thieves to move on to an easier target.

    Good evening ⚠️ I am in the welding metallurgy and I grew up with grinders of all categories and my advice is to buy a disc lock according to the thickness of your disc, which means leaving no gap between the disc and the lock then it is best to close it in one of the deepest holes because with a grinder it is very easy to cut even stainless steel unless there is no space for the grinder disc to go between the two it will make the cut a bit difficult which means a few more minutes

      I have a similar ABUS lock (although I think it's made from forged and hardened steel, not zinc, also it has their very good X-plus core), it's not really loud enough to be heard from the street into the house unless it's really quiet, but the perpetrator, unless he came prepared with ear plugs, will certainly have a ringing in his ear for the next couple of hours, and if it's parked around people it will most definetly attract attention.

    • @michaelrmanley
      @michaelrmanley 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What's the 1st thing we do when we set off the alarm when we're trying to unlock it? Muffle it with our hand. Thinking a thief would do the same prior to starting their attack or pick.

    • @019208237
      @019208237 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      tinwoods 100% is wrong. I count myself in that percentage lol. even a few seconds of it sounding is enough to catch the owners attention. You can’t mute the sound completely😉saying 100% of people ignore ANY alarm is simply not true. If a house alarm goes off in my street I’ve seen people come out there doors to see what’s going on. I have told my neighbours to keep a look out if my alarm goes off as I’ve had 1 bike stolen and 1 vandalised because they couldn’t steal it. Jealous idiots. In my street we all look out for each other now as we have had many break ins in a house across the road and vehicle thefts in the area. 3 times an elderly couple have been broken into and on the 3rd occasion they broke into the wall safe. they are targeted because of there age no doubt.

    The one I got has an alarm but these sort of locks real power comes from where it’s located and the difficulty’s to get to the bolt to but cut and especially if you have them on both wheels just the slightest touch will set the alarm but this isn’t something I would recommend you park your bike and leave for a few hours I personally use this to bring my electric scooter into the gym and keep these on them to make sure no one will stroll out with it

    @littlegoobie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    since it's a cast soft metal, i want to see that gap/slot get some prying force. It would be easy to pry with anything flat when installed because the brake disc would narrow the space for you. From there, the little arm only needs to bend or flex 1/4" or whatever depth that pin is inserted into it. And a slide hammer in the keyhole would probably have a good chance at pulling out the cylinder too.

  • @JS-fb6ww
    @JS-fb6ww 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I'm pulling my hair out here! Wtf. Why are the lock companies making these locks out of pot metal when the while objective is to protect a very expensive item. They make u-locks out of hardened steel, so why don't they makes these disc locks the same way??? What is the sense in making an inexpensive disc lock that's meant to deter theft of a $15,000 bike? People want to buy an expensive quality constructed lock for that purpose.

    • @Aubreykun
      @Aubreykun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know this is an old comment but I thought I'd put a small explanation. Locks only increase the effort (=time/conspicuousness = risk of getting caught) required to steal the object. Of note this will also work on a bicycle disc brake.
      1. This is a secondary or tertiary lock, the main feature is that it's more of an alarm with locking as a bonus, adding to the number of locks a thief needs to bypass to steal the vehicle and thus making it less likely they would _try_ yours vs the guy next to you. Vehicle thefts of bicycles, scooters and motorcycles are most often done opportunistically rather than trying to get "your" bike.
      2. Most thieves won't be picking locks, they'll be using bolt cutters, bottle jacks, grinders, and so on to quickly destroy the lock with minimal skill or effort needed. The shortest path thru this sort of lock is actually the disc, so the material doesn't matter if the thief is going to dump it into a van rather than riding it off.

    • @Aubreykun
      @Aubreykun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ForestCat_Peter
      Please read my above comment. This type of lock has actually got a functional purpose, and it's not a primary lock.
      A thief compares risk vs reward when looking for targets. A motorcycle can be such a high value that it's worth it for a thief to pass up a dozen bikes with 3+ locks on them for the one that someone left with 2 or less.

    • @Wingnut_Stickman
      @Wingnut_Stickman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strength in numbers? I wonder was their intention that you purchased 30+ of these and install 10 each on three rotors on your bike? Even a "fast" thief is going to keep walking.

  • @BattleChemist

    Easy way to test for zinc: drip hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) onto freshly cut metal; production of hydrogen gas bubbles indicates zinc. 34% HCL can be acquired at hardware or pool supply stores.

  • @tiffstead3164

    Just an idea for testing if it is zinc, won’t vinegar fizz a little on contact?

    • @Robertlavigne1
      @Robertlavigne1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would fizz if it was zinc, but it would do the same for magnesium. I'm doubtful that it is magnesium as he said it felt heavy and magnesium alloys are pretty light-weight. The vinegar test does rule out straight aluminum though.

      Requires removal of the entire wheel followed by disassembly of the wheel. If it's the rear wheel, the job is far from easy. I doubt most wheels could be easily remounted without the brake disc.
      Given the type of lock (the bike isn't locked TO anything), a sensible thief who prefers not to pick the lock would doubtless merely load the bike into a truck and drive it to a shop where he can remove the lock at leisure.

    Notice on this video when he tries to turn the key (1:00) and it doesn't release the tumbler smoothy. That's where I currently am. Fucked.

      I'm sure eventually, someone will defeat it. As far as I know it hasn't happened yet. I wonder if LPL has one, and is ... probing It for a weakness?

    • @stevebogucki6236

      R.P. Rosen That lock would need a whole new kind of picks with integrated spring tensioners that could work as a group to deal with each pin due to lack of room. That's just my humble opinion.

    The blowtorch thing, I feel like a thief wouldn't want to damage the bike it's attached to. :')

    • @nocensorship8092
      @nocensorship8092 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I doubt thieves care about the damage.. they can switch out the brak disc. They'll also happily destroy the ignition lock itself even though that one can cost nearly the bikes value to replace.

    Not damaging the motorcycle isn't the main purpose of the reminder wire, the main purpose is to not damage the rider, since the bike comes to a fairly dramatic stop when the lock hits the caliper after having turned the half to three quarter turn from the locked position. You will infallibly take a fall.

  • @saleenr6
    @saleenr6 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you should design a lock that you fail at picking and the subscribed 142k people will each buy 3.....no 30

  • @BalkanDeputy
    @BalkanDeputy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This lock is a piece of shit. The pin doesn't always retract when you attempt to unlock the lock with the key.
    So today one of the few nice sunny days in Oregon I can't ride because the key won't release the pin and the bike isn't going anywhere.

    Why do they even sell locks like these? Are they for people who don’t give a shit about their bike, or those looking for a few bucks from insurance . Locks are not the place you cheap out on.

    Dont use these disc locks many thieves will use a pry bar or battery grinder to defeat these ive seen too many laying on the parking garage floor and a nice ducati panagale gone again use heavy chain to secure your bike frame and rear wheel to a railing or post . Thieves know the weak point is the lower jaw of these locks and yes they are pot metal ! again heavy chain and a brake throttle lock to slow em down.

    Why even make this cheap shit? For the money you spend on making this, you could just make more steel ones, lower their prices to be more affordable and still make profit. Win-win.

    Zinc ? I guess mfr's just gave up with the exotic metals now that you can get a cordless grinder at home depot for $40 . Seems the only way to really stop a motorcycle thief is with a .44 magnum
