    Your videos remind me of what my dad told me when I was a kid. A lock only keeps an honest man honest.

    The ring retainer is removed by rotating it anti-clockwise just until the thinner tail is level with the ramped inner edge, as you rotate the ring clockwise ease the tail up the ramp as it turns, eventually the whole ring rotates up the ramp releasing the core.

    Nicely done. I was also dissapointed when I finally bought a disc detainer pick and found out my Kryptonite Evolution was easy to open. No false gates either and the ability to tension the core from the front disc both seem like issues they should have taken care of. I have heard some of their newer generation locks have better anti-pick features but I haven't managed to play with any of them yet.

    Impressive analyssis! However, I would love to see if an updated version (2023) of this same lock has design improvements. Does Kryptonite actually improve and refine original designs or just put out new models?

  • @DavidShepheard
    @DavidShepheard หลายเดือนก่อน

    When you got the core out of the lock, I think it would have been cool to have put the key in and turned it, to show us the back of the lock turning. Maybe that would also have revealed some partially hidden way to disassemble the core. Like maybe you turn the lock 30 times to unscrew it or something.

    Good to see a disc detainer vid. People, in general, seem to shy away from them. I know they're well above my pay grade.

    Your a gifted picker so not much gives you a lot of trouble! Plastic in that lock is a bad sign and with that knowledge I wouldn't perches one believing it to be a cheap shortcut .
    Keep the vids coming....

      cerebellum yeah good point,
      its probably me, I'm never keen on plastic as at some point it Will degrade, however it would probably be replaced by a better cheaper lock in it's working life time..

  • @metamorphicorder
    @metamorphicorder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hmmm. Mine is built a little different. I wrote kryptonite a fb msssage after discovering the plastic plug. I think it leaves it vunerable to heat attacks. If the plastic can be softened in mine at least the core can be turned with. Tool or even a non working key. I still think its good lock. I was actually pretty impressed at hos long you took to pick it. I really think they should go to an aluminum or brass plug.

    • @metamorphicorder
      @metamorphicorder 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep see theres no steel restraining the core from turning if the plastic is compromised with heat.like there is in the larger new york lock. Turn the core and those bolts will slide away.

    Optimally positioned with good lighting. Those are not a thief’s typical field conditions. If a thief is lucky they might be working upside down on their back with a headlamp. More probably I am positioning lock(s) so they would need to be picked backhanded and blind. With a motion detector(s) to alert me the thief is face down while trying the first lock, then I’m looking for the driver.

      I sure hope so! But it’s just a theory! Or maybe something to do with the machining and production?
      Or more likely an aesthetic choice for it to resemble a stereotypical keyhole.

    In regards to the opening on the outer shell that would be ideal for drilling do you think the entire inner sleeve could be rotated 180* so that it is covered by the outer shell?

  • @gumonthepants
    @gumonthepants 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Dear Lockpicking Lawyer. I’ve had this lock now for a few years and lately, for the past few months, it takes me anywhere from 10 seconds to close to a minute to open it with the key as the rotation stops about halfway hanging up on something. Jiggling the key while turning helps most of the time to successfully turn fully . Do you have any idea what’s happened to it and can it be remedied? Thanks!

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Either your key isn't going in all the way or you have some discs sticking together. Are you in a cold climate? Freezing water? Try flushing the lock with a water displacement liquid, like WD40, to remove moisture and any grime that my be causing the discs to stick to each other. Good luck.👍

    • @gumonthepants
      @gumonthepants 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LockPickingLawyer Thanks, it started while living in Phoenix, now living in Honolulu. Definitely in all the way and it begins proper rotation then abruptly stops/binds sharply. At that point it takes many quick back n forth and jiggling to get passed that “catch”. I will try to flush it again with WD again, it has been awhile... Bike theft and , more so, scooter/motorcycle theft is huge out here.

    • @tylermix7804
      @tylermix7804 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lockpickinglawyer I'm honestly surprised you would recommend using WD-40 on a lock you want to use again. WD-40 was/is designed to displace water (hence the name) not lubricate. While it does clean out water and other liquid, it leaves a residue behind that will attract dirt and gunk up the lock. Better to use a dry lubricant like graphite.

    • @johns4870

    Interesting, I have this same lock, and it does not have 2 sleeves. Only the outer one, then you are at the plastic lock cylinder. I've emailed Kryptonite to ask if I received the right lock because they only have one disc lock model like this....

    That's pretty impressive, but basically what I would expect from someone of your skill. Have you tried to pick an Abloy Protec2 yet? I've seen a guy on youtube who say he can pick it, but I'm pretty sure he's a liar. However, if you say you can I'd believe it. You seem like a straight up guy, so I'd love to see if you can pick one.

    • @caster269
      @caster269 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ancient comment, I know. In one of his videos at some point (I don’t remember which one) he mentions that the Protec2 is far beyond his skill level. At least right now there’s only one real video of a pick on it and that’s from earlier this year. The guy who did it also created custom tools, which he wants to keep to himself, to do so and he’s been working to pick one for a very long time. LPL is a very good picker, but there’s still a big gap between him and high end locksmiths.

    Bro, as much as I admire your skills and all you have to admit one thing. It's a completely different scenario to lockpick in an controlled enviroment, especially having a go at it before recording a vid and in a busy street. I really want to see a potential thief trying to waste 2 minutes to lockpick this lock, constantly looking over the shoulder lol. Sure, it'd be better with false gates but still it's easier to just go on with angle grinder and be done with it within 30s. Much noise? Yeah. Someone would probably call the police? Sure. By the time the thief is done he jumps on the bike and bye Felicia haha. And even in case someone tries to interfere, good luck trying to subdue a thief with a portable angle grinder.

    • @metamorphicorder
      @metamorphicorder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Remus if hes using the grinder to open a lock then youve got the element of surprise on him. If he sees tou comming the he will stop attacking the lock and deal with you. If you stay away from him you use up his time to steal the bike and he gets nervous and leaves. Besides all you really have to do stand next to him and do jumping jacks while going nanananabooboo at the top of your lungs. Hes gonna leave and leave you alone too. He doesnt have a reason to attack you, you might be crazier than him and he has a lot of eyes looking at him now.

    Having worked in Law enforcement for 28 yrs your videos while entertaining are disingenuous. I've spoken to lots of idiot bike thieves and none ever try to pick the lock. Most use bolt cutters or Pry bars to ply their trade. No one should steer clear of these locks based on your concept that a thief is walking around with the myriad of lock picking tools that you've assembled. Quit it.
