Hi - i was the VFX supervisor on this video. Ideawise, you pretty much caught most of the important themes in the video, i think ;-)
The video was completely shot on green screen. Some of the props are real, but the sets themselves (including the forest) are 100% CGI. Essentially, if someone touches something, that was in the studio, everything else... not.
We used motion control for the camera, so that all those sweeping camera motions could be repeated pixel perfect with the performers switching places and costumes. Most of the main characters are actually played by the band members - for example, the guy with the red phone was Emppu, the guitarist, and the guy taking a selfie while he was mugged is Kai, the drummer. There were only four of the "phone monks" in the Mona Lisa scene - they were used multiple times, shot in multiple passes, and composited together to make the crowd. In many of the more complex shots, i did a rough comp right there on the set to verify that the effect will work, before we moved on to the next setup - an essential step to minimize the number of catastrophes in post production (there will inevitably be plenty of catastrophes in any case on a project as complex as this).
The director, Stobe Harju, has very good post production chops, and understands complex visual effects shots well - in fact, he did a lot of the actual post work himself, and contributed a lot to the practical planning of the more difficult shots. For example, having Tuomas in a green suit was going to be a problem, so he came up with the idea to use a blue suit in the studio, and just colour correct it into a green one in post. The plant was also painted blue. Not a problem anymore. Simple, but borderline genius solution, i'd say. Kudos to Stobe for that.
The post for videos like this is always sort of a nightmare. We had a tiny team of three working on the visual effects (Janne Pitkänen, Stobe Harju and myself), and the sheer amount of work was staggering. Even though we had months to do the work, we were never really truly done - the release date just came and we had to let go. And thus what felt like an endless grind to make it yet a little bit better just stopped ;-)
PS: The low contrast look is something Stobe just likes i think, not sure whether there's much more to it than that. The teal versus reddish tint of the blacks does serve a purpose though - the "dark side" (or reality if you will) is greenish blue, and the "makebelieve" side of how people portray themselves online as a better and happier version of themselves has the reddish tint.

What an amazing job - it is truly one of the more intricate videos we've ever seen, I think! Thanks for sharing all of this. You can really tell you all put so much thought into it! I would love to get more experience with VFX myself as it can really help level up your work which you can see with what Stobe's achieving too. Very smart to have him in a blue suit instead and just correct it.
Honestly I feel like it's always a nightmare becuase you never have enough people, time or money! I am truly curious what the budget was for this video because it sounds like you all spent so much time on it in post.
Love the little detail of the cool/teal vs warm/reddish tones in the blacks - love that kind of visual messaging, and a great level of detail!
I'm sure you have so much more to tell about all of this!

    • @Halsu
      @Halsu 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@manondereeper As a director, it's a clear advantage if you know at least the rudiments of various VFX techiniques. You do not need to be able to actually execute them in practice though, it's plenty if you just understand how they are done so you can make wise decisions along the way.
As far as the budget goes, i do not know the exact numbers, and couldn't really tell even if i did. But for the ballpark, take the number you are thinking of... and divide it by some number between, say, 3 and 10 ;-)
While the budget was decent, even large in Finnish music video terms, a lot, if not majority of the work we did in post was essentially pro bono. Which is not at all uncommon with music videos, at least here in my neck of woods.

Hello Manon [ Manon de Reeper ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This music video is the 1st released in advance from their 9th studio album, "Human :||: Nature" (2020), together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band. As of course you noticed, this music video is a comment on the toxic excesses of social media in a world oriented towards promoting one's own image above all, distancing oneself from the nature of which we are all a part.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

When you re-watch the video, notice that every mirror is cracked.
The first half of the video shows how we portray ourselves on social media. The second half shows the untold tales, the parts we keep hidden. If we dare let something slip, we get canceled...or worse.
    Your cast of characters:
Floor Jansen (vocals) - helicopter mom who wants to keep child caged
Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards, composer) - "green man", ecology activist that bathes in sludge
Emppu Vuorinen (guitar) - monk that gets stabbed
Marko Hietala (bass, vocals) - "spam king"
Troy Donockley (multi-instrumentalist, vocals) - man on golden throne (and wow, talk about symbolism when he stands up and we see the US Capitol behind him)
Kai Hahto (drums) - monk taking selfies while other monk gets stabbed
Jessica Edstrom (Instagram model and Nightwish superfan) - Instagram model
Emma - child (who is not Floor's actual child; Floor and Hannes keep their kids out of the public eye as much as they can!)

    I had a go at interpreting it, glad you noticed the honeycombs. . . . . . . . . as below !
    Noise - interpretation
Well, everyone is on their phone to inflate themselves in the digital world.
Black Mirrors - Black Mirror is a British dystopian science fiction anthology television series.
It examines modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies.
Troy is king oil/industry, he has a crown of oil derricks, gold platform shoes to be above everyone else, he has a golden throne, literally. He has a public concerned face but actually couldn't care less and throws the flowers away.
Floor is the child pageant mother using her child to promote herself on social media using the child and has the child locked in her cage skirt, the kid just wants to go to the fairground.
Emppu is one of the phone monks dedicated to their phones and cannot even see the Mona Lisa in front of them, he swipes the wrong way not following the herd and is "killed" by his peers while Kai uses that as a selfie backdrop - something which has happened.
Marko is the useless pills for everything salesman, you have to be quick to read what's on the bottles.
Tuomas is the apparent, but two faced greenie, he has signs both for and against nuclear energy and privately bathes in oil from big industry which smothers the duckling you see him nurture before. It's actually warmed veg oil, semolina and food dye. The double visual is to suggest oil field nodding donkey pumps.
Edström is parodying herself by using surgical enhancements and minimal clothes as you can see from a Google search of her.
There are black mirrors everywhere and hexagons on the walls and floors which is the standard basic planning map for cell towers to give maximal reuse of radio spectrum, and it is the format of the hive too.
The child, with a QR code on its arm, is placed in the "phone matrix" early on and gets hearts on the screen for its media efforts; when it dies as an old man the monitor screen goes black and listen carefully, there's the old three note chime of the Windows Bluetooth shut-down melody.
The ending is fairly obvious, get off your phone and go look at the amazing world outside.
Here is a quote from Tuomas about the meaning behind the song:
"Noise is a reminder. It’s some food for thought. We see it more as an optimistic video than pessimistic. Especially the last 10 seconds of the video, when you see the beautiful forest and the landscape, it should fill you with hope the real world is still out there.
This video is not a criticism about technology or cell phones. We love technology. We wouldn’t ever have done this record without technology. We love our cell phones, the Internet and all that, but it’s a criticism for the addiction that these things cause in human beings. ‘Addiction’ is the word. It’s such a shame that we have all these wonderful tools that we can use for the good, to spread true information and to be connected to the world.
We love the idea of social media, like Twitter, that everybody in the world suddenly has a voice; we have a voice. We can immediately get out there.
It’s just a matter of what you put out there. And that’s what the video is all about."

    It's all about social media.
Floor, portrayed as the perfect mum while in reality keeping her daughter imprisoned.
Marko, selling pills, but he can never sell enough.
Troy, sitting ion a throne that is really a toilet.
The drummer whoi captures violence on his phone for likes.
Emppu, who gets beaten up because he isn't like everyone else.
Tuomas, whose image is clean and green, but behind closed doors bathes in dirty oil.
The model, and all she has to do to be seen.
    As the chorus lyrics say:
"Your mirror is black only a copy stares back"
When you look at the phone, the very first thing you see is a copy of you staring back from a black mirror.
    I love this song!

Evolve - The Warning - shot in a garage on 16 iphones and a drone!
Disciple - filmed with fans as actors in factory.
The Enter Sandman - METALLICA cover - The Warning - Black and white
Sick - black and white with a touch of color - I believe the cinematrophic style is called "gritty" or "grunge"

It's really so clever with how the characters all look so happy in their little worlds until things start falling apart & the king Troy ends up residing on a golden toilet, Floor can't get the little girl to cooperate for that prefect photo, Emppu is the outsider & gets turned on but not only that he gets filmed being beaten up by onlooker Kai, Marko pedalling his fat pills that no longer work so he's unhappy with all these boxes of useless stuff & Tuomas the environmental champion guy is really bathing in oil behind the scenes of being so high & mighty.

If you go to a Concert these days, the most people looked at the Band/singer true they're phones,
people don't listen or looked any more, if you want to go, you stand in the middle of people with they're hands up high with their phones in it, when you say something to that person, they say that they will looked at it at home [the concert].
when an accident has happened, people stop and take photos or film it, when you ask "have you called 911" ...no I'm filming it.
People lived to fast these days, they filmed everything but they have no time to see it back, the phones make us addicted to media, internet [you tube/tik tok/Instagram/whatsapp] they don't think themselves.
That is what [i] see at these Clip from Nightwish, Very good made, it makes people think,

To me it was a statement of how our "modern lives" in particular, the technology element can appear to be for our improvement, our betterment. But that perception belies a much darker reality, how we can be sucked into an alternative to reality and eventually completely lose track of the wonderous world around us. The most interesting thing is that band members have a laugh here and they poke fun of their own ideals.
Tuomas is very much about enviroment. And in this clip he's playing a environmentalist guy who take photos of himself with trees and stuff only to then literally take bath in oil. Tuomas even goes as far as making his own character take picture of himself with various signs that don't go together at all. The eco-activists don't care about the environment. They just care about PR, fame and money. That's what Tuomas is implying. And since he's one of them - he has every damn right to criticize.
Floor is very dedicated mother. She makes sure not to involve her daughter in her life as a singer at all. That's not her daughter. Yet Floor in this video also pokes fun of mothers who use their children as a way to gain popularity online and cage their children instead of just letting them play and be happy.
Marko admitted openly to having a depression problems. And yet he in this video is playing a guy who sells pills online, claiming those pills will solve any problem. Knowing full well that those very pills don't fix his problems at all. It's also a criticism of the West as a whole as "if you have a problem - just take a pill" attitude is very much present in today's world.
They even went as far as hiring a legit Instagram influencer girl to poke fun of her own profession! XD

Interesting you mentioned it looks like a circus because much of an older album of their's had a lot of dark, curcus lmusical themes and visuals, from which the tone of this song is derived. So you almost had it when describing it as 'cheery', when in contrast to Imaginaerum, regular listeners know the theme to be fantastical or energetic, yet dark.
There was a moment when the visuals grew darker and we're presented with Floor and the daughter figure before a misty, dead circus/theme park. Knowing this album came after Imaginaerum, we see the songwriter (Thuomas) impart to this video that his once alive Circus--or mind, has grown darker under the veil of phone screens and technology. And that is one of the core concepts of this album.
The cage dress looked like a powerful visual of the term , 'Cone of Influence', later shown to us as a cone-shaped megaphone. I think its in this scene where there is no distinguishing from the mother figure and her social media.
And Thuomas played the part of the Viral Treehugger loving on a rubber ducky while making his spcial media posts. Away from that virtue signaling he is seen again, admiring the ducky (his social media fame) while himself is thoroughly polluted both spiritually and physically (thrashing in the tub of tar before an apocalyptic pollution scenescape behind him.
I really enjoyed this reaction video abd your take on this, thank you.

Nightwish - Noise was the best music video of 2020 for me. The honeycomb definitely symbolizes the hive mind and if someone has trouble figuring out what is happening, it could be a good clue to unlocking the rest of the video for them. Stobe Harju also directed the film Imaginaerum, or simply "the Nightwish movie" to some. I personally think it is the best movie made about its particular subject, which is not "about Nightwish," but I will not give it away. If you find the movie sometime, I think you'd enjoy it as long as you don't go into it expecting a horror film, which it is not. 🔥🤘🔥

What the video is telling us (imho) is how people are telling us lies and distort reality or even create an alternate reality. There are a lot of people (leaders) that tell all these great stories that sound great and make you feel good, but in reality these stories often turn out to be untrue. This video is about that deceival. In the first half of the video you see all the band members trying to make themselves look good, but in the second half you get to see what goes on behind the scenes, i.ow. the reality. And then reality turns out to be quite different from what they are trying to make you believe. Floor portrays herself as the ideal mom with the ideal child, but in the end the child is not happy and and the mom is not so ideal after all. Marco sells these great pills, but in the end he is unhappy with his job because he knows that all these pills are not actually helping the people. Tuomas is the environmentalist, but in the end he bathes in oil while you can see the polluting industry through his window. Meanwhile he ignores all this and very selfishly playes with his rubber ducky. The sexy model seems very pretty, but behind the scenes she is not so great-looking. She needs a lot of work to look decent and she even uses fillers and such. Troy presents himself as some sort of king which people adore, but in the end his throne is only a toilet. I feel that the use of color in this video resembles the unseen truth or reality, while the absence of color resembles the fact that we are not able to see the truth or reality for what it is. There is color in the parts where the band members are showing themselves off, but these colors are saturated and look unnatural. To me it seems that this resembles the fact that these stories are usually very polarized. It's either black or white and there is usually no room for nuances or debates. This is shown through the use of saturated and unnatural colors. The last shot of the colorful sky does have lots of shades and colors, and thus represents reality in all it's nuances. The fact that the child grows up under the hood resembles the fact that lots of people live their lives being disconnected from reality. The heart symbol that appears in the screen on the outside of the helmet indicates that the child likes what it sees on the inside. So it appears to be happy to live in a sea of lies, unable to see reality. The scene where the screen of one of the monk turns red resembles group behaviour and shows what happens when one member of the group expresses an opinion that is different than the group opinion. The group does not tolerate different opinions. Again it's either black or white. Either you are with the group or you are against it, in which case you are the enemy. In the end the video is not about social media or smartphones, but it is more about how they are used. To distribute so much noise that reality largely is covered up and remains unseen. Noise. The noise of lies.

Yup, NW were prescient about the Capitol riot when they released this video in early 2020 ;) Sorta like The Simpsons (in which series NW featured btw). A great clip with some pretty straightforward critique but also some lovely light-hearted irony ('Tuomas as a self-absorbed tree hugger is hilarious).
As to semiotics & the responsibility of filmmakers, that's a good one. Maybe take a good look at the images the public got treated to re: that so-called Capitol "attack" and not take the surface image/first impressions at face value. Some may point out the obvious staging of that event and how social media are used as a tool to sow division & societal unrest. As this NW clip shows: the medium may change but the message still is that the world is but a stage. "Out out brief candle.." or zombiephone backlight. Same difference 🙃 Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘

@@manondereeper W/o any prior knowledge, I'd probably have assumed the same and the Capitol/political reference still stands in a more general way. So it was a good catch regardless. Tuomas has since made several statements about the clip and how it's not simply an all out condemnation of smartphones or social media. It's about the way ppl use the possibilities of information technology.
No discussion abt the way the medium itself has been used as an instrument of control or how it's not simply the public's fault (blaming the victim), considering the fact that a great number of social scientists/behavioural engineers have contributed tt desing of social media to shape them into perfect tools for social conditioning. Not a peep either about the health hazards of these devices. They won't go there, like barely any in the industry will.
They're a band & as such they cannot neglect the fact that they're part of the music/entertainment industry. Their critique will always remain "consumable" if only to not scare away too many fans. Same goes for filmmakers of course. Some "statements" are allowed, but anyone who digs a bit deeper won't have much of a career, certainly not in the La-La Land mainstream. /rant & Groetjes!

And the rules to save the climate only apply to others while they bath in oil.
Also, my personal guess is that the idea of this work comes from concerts where people pay to see them live but still hade the mobile phone in the face so they see it all in the mobile screen.

I'd recommend another Finnish music video, "Carnival of rust" by the Finnish band Poets of the Fall. Based on this reaction, pretty sure you're gonna like reacting to it, if you haven't seen it before. :D

My favourite sadly hilarious detail in the video is the toilet seat as the kings throne. Don't know if you missed this or just didin't make a comment
Yes - people live in virtual reality nowadays. They are introduced to it as babies and they often stay in it until the end of their lives. This video brings up few of the many painful truths behind that. At the same time people claim how other people - youtubers, gamers, instagram models etc live fake lives, but "usual people" surround themselves with staged images of themselves and people around them. They try to control how they look to others and sadly often believe what others have staged for them to see. It used to be "fake it until you make it", now one can just keep faking it. This is possibly humankinds biggest fundamental problem after greed. These two parts of human nature are responsible for most of our problems - wars, global warming, overpopulation. One can pick any of our favourite apocalypses and it all leads to greed and vanity.
"One can be truly free only when he stops searching himself from other peoples opinions."
"There is enough for everybody's needs, but not for everybody's greed."
