Hi - i worked on the VFX for this one, mainly on compositing and grade. I was not on the set, but from what i heard, it was a very, very difficult location to work at. No miniatures on the one. It's all real full scale shots, or CGI by Lapland studios. The foregrounds of most shots (including fire) are real, save for some additional sparks and enhancing the ring of fire in the top down shot where it showed that it was not actually a perfect ring in the set (again, a difficult location). The far backgrounds are CGI, either matte paintings (by the director himself, BTW) or 3D or a mix of the two. No greenscreen to speak of, would have been impossible to build at that location and that budget. Instead, a LOT of tracking and tedious roto work by hand in post. Pretty much everything else about the post was tedious too, considering the scale and scope of the project, and the limitations of computers and software. At the time, almost all videos were still SD, and going for 720p was stretching everything to the limit. Full HD would have been near impossible to pull off in practice. Doing something like this would still be a lot of work in 2024, but much more manageable, even at higher resolutions. Trivia: the ocean waves that can be seen when the anchor drops were shot by me, when on a holiday trip on Madeira islands with my wife, from the top of a real hundreds of meters tall cliff. You never know where your home videos may end up ;-)
I watched the making of video after having done this reaction and realized it had all been done on location - just absolutely incredible (or insane, lol). Very ambitious either way. Beautiful matte paintings - he is definitely very multi talented. Incredible also to realize how far tech has come since then. Hilarious little tidbit about the ocean waves!!! \o/ It's true, sometimes you'll use the most random bits of video!
It was filmed on location in Finland, the link below to the Making of is very interesting on how they did the music video. This track with Marko singing was what hooked me on Nightwish. Greetings from Belgium
First time I have noticed, under the air buoy there is a pendulum, which is the logo of the album Dark passion play. Also, consider watching Imaginaerum movie from the band.
Thanks to my VPN, I was finally able to watch this. As always, I enjoyed it very much. I have an even greater appreciation for the video after hearing your insights. And, in fact, you inspired me to rewatch the making-of documentary, to see it with your perspective still in my memory banks. Thanks! 👍🤟
Great analysis again - I was someone who suggested the 'making of' video, and as you were commenting I kept thinking "you'll get your answer there". I have watched the _Imaginaerum_ movie 4 times now, and would recommend it; but if you have had a loved one with dementia, bring tissues. I've cried every time. There are stylistic parallels with _MirrorMask,_ if you know that one, though it's very different tonally.
This was filmed in real place in Finnish nature. However they did use green coloured wood panel that they used to fade away some trees and make those stones seem to continue forever basically.
I really appreciate the perspective and your thoughts as a film maker of these masterpieces that I have enjoyed musically for many years! Have you ever considered reacting to a Rammstein video? The videos to Deutschland, Zeit and Adieu are visual masterpieces on par with any top notch Hollywood production. I guarantee you will have SO MUCH to nerd about in any (or all?) of these three. They are all in my top 10 of favourite music videos ever.
The videos are soooo amazing! I don't agree with some of Rammstein's antics though... But I love the videos and they are amazing pieces of art. Ah, so conflicted.
@@manondereeper I understand, and of course it's totally your decision. Just pointing out that all that remained are unsubstantiated allegations and federal criminal ivestigations went nowhere. And Rammstein are definitely not the only well known artists that have taints on their reputation.
There's really good making of the islander music video documentary available in youtube, including band director editors etc lots of behind the scenes production stuff in there recommend to check it out :)
Another gem of a reaction with great insight. Thank you. Check out the link to the making of the Islander someone gives below if only in your own time.
Yes I watched it after reacting - I try not to watch making of's before reacting because it spoils the experience for me but I love watching them to see if I got anywhere close to guessing how they made it and I was pretty pleased to see I got it right in quite a few instances :>
Hi Manon de Reeper! Yes, this fantasy/steampunk video is awesome - I like it too... People usually take a seat around the fire, only Nightwish sits in the ring of fire. 😄🤘 Well, and now you could make a reaction to Nightwish - Islander (live at Tampere) 😇😁
Hi Manon, greetings from UK I just love seeing things from your perspective 😊 It is a fresh approach to a song which we are all familliar with and seeing it from your point of view makes it fresh and exciting again. Please keep them coming 🥰
Netherlands you say, then you have to react to Ayreon. A great start is The Day That The World Breaks Down video with Arjen Anthony Lucasen's commentary subtitles.😀
the sailor dragging the ship and anchor( strugglings in life)..the road in front of you is always rocky, you have to pave it yourself to go on..the ending...pfff(ending of life and let you rest go to move on.)the lighthouse is a beacon to guide us.
Love your take on the music videos and how you help us understand more. I would recommend you looking into a Tool video, given the style of them and the input from Adam Jones, their guitarist and former special effects guy.
You like horror-themed videos? You've already seen Nightwish and Poets of the Fall from Finland - how about Apocalyptica next? Their song, and music video, Bittersweet is very good. Of course it's quite old, but I still think it's stylish and nicely seasoned with horror.
I actually watched the making of video for this video after, and the Prop maker actually said that they were instruments made specifically for this video and that - according to the band members - they weren't great to play! lol.
I recommend you to have a look at making the video, saw someone posted the link in another comment. And I know you are in to the videos, but you might actually have some useful input to us by reacting/analysing a live performance too, the are more than musical performances, look at back drops etc. IF you decide to do it I recommend doing "Dead boys Poem" live.
I really love live performances, but I have no experience in putting together a live production! It's really very very different, so I wouldn't be able to do them justice, I can say "oooohhh" and "ahhhh" and "wow", lol, but that's not the type of reaction I like doing!
@@manondereeper Hehehe, Well I can understand that. But as I said, there is so much more than the music, the live performances are more of a complete production actually
Thank you! I loved watching this reaction! It was really interesting to hear opinions from a filmaker's perspective. :) I have always loved this Islander video. Even if the video and the song itself are a bit sad, somehow I find it soothing. I love Marko's voice in this. He was also the one who composed the song and Tuomas made the lyrics. Have you heard of the band Within Tempation? They are Dutch. They have this really cool music video for their song Paradise. Have you seen it? It also features Nightwish's old singer Tarja. Obviosly the song itself is great too, but I think the music video is awesome (it does look quite expensive too). And it has over 100 million views which I think is huge! Please react to that one if you haven't already seen it :) (although I would anyway like to hear your thoughts about it) th-cam.com/video/Dy6MpsDPKts/w-d-xo.html
Adults reflecting back to children's stories was kind of the overarching theme for Imagenarium album, so the children's book style visuals are most likely not a coincidence or artefact of technology used. I think they are very intentionally like that.

The fire is real and rocky landscape is real. Video was filmed in Lapland Rovaniemi Finland.
Yes I found out when watching the making of - what an unreal environment, just stunning!

Auri (Tuomas, his wife Johanna and Troy's band) just won Rome's short film award with their music video Night 13. Maybe give it a watch?

Great to hear! So glad you enjoyed it. It's really a really wonderful video, so creative and special.
Whilst I prefer Nightwish live videos because of their energy, their studio videos are topnotch!

Oh my gosh, wow. I'll definitely have to watch it then - the feature that I'm working on also deals with dementia. Love it. Thank you!
it's old but I have to: Nightwish doesn't sit around of fire. The fire sits around of Nightwish!😅

The Shoemaker video is certainly also worthwhile.

"Pain Remains" Trilogy by Lorna Shore is just a simple "must" ;)
It is on my list!! ^_^
I was not thinking kids book when i first seen it.... But i thought of Salvador Dali paintings in how expressionistic abstract they seem.
Yes! And they referenced Dali in the making of video, so great call!
@@manondereeper figures, reminded me of "The temptation of St Anthony"

Oh yes, eventually I will get to Tool!
And I forgot this: Beast In Black - Moonlight Rendezvous. Female director!
Remember Johnny Depp towing the Black Pearl in Pirates of the Caribbean - At Worlds End? Both the movie and the music video are released in 2007.
Oh, you're absolutely right!

I love Apocalyptica - I'll have to check out Bittersweet!
The strings looking like they vibrated really slowly might also be due to camera syncing to some overtone frequency of the vibration.
