I have nothing to say to the purest out there. The 996 is one of my favorite Porsche bodies. Because they look so different yet still deliver that Porsche feeling. I've driven a 993 Turbo and yes it's very quick and beautiful. But for me the technological advancements and styling of this car is the one I will always gravitate towards.
"Normies"??? Normies are not people who would pay thousands more for a car with conventional 911 headlights! Doug is spot on. This car is spot on, and the only Porsche I'm truly interested (in part because my budget for another toy is guided by whether or not divorce is a viable option; it isn't). 0-60 in 3.7!? A manual transmission? Truly great looks and a rear set that folds down like it's an SUV?! Superior handling for track days? And somebody is fretting over headlight design? Shut up! I mean, really, Shut up!
This is my absolute favorite year of the 911. Hands down. Doug, stop trying to drive the prices up. I need ten years worth extra income to afford one of these as it is, and if you bump the prices by these videos you’re essentially killing my dream. Better check your privilege, sir! (HUGE EYE ROLL)
The 996 was always my favourite generation of 911, partly because of the headlights. I actually like them both pre- and post-facelift. I rarely say something like this but being different helps it. Although I think all 911s are great since they still have a subtle look without the shitty overdesigned nature of the italian supercars. Plus it's also manually elite.
I’m a Porsche enthusiast, I like the fried egg headlights and those after them. I think the fried egg headlights look smooth and definitely Porsche Boxster like, and I like the ones after of looking unique and underrated.
I like the fried egg headlights because it doesn't just look like every other 911. When I first saw it I hoped Porsche were finally taking some bold steps forward with their aesthetics but a generation later it was back to the same old thing
My dad owned a 1978 930 turbo with over 25k of engine work done back in 05. It was long before they became super high dollar cars. THAT was a car. I've driven almost every version of the 911, vipers, vettes, Ferrari 360's, m5's, etc. That 930 was a creature designed by its own master. Absolutely insane and a pure drivers car that would pull the smile off your face and transform it into fear reincarnate. Such a beautiful experience. The white with lobster red interior made it even better. Good god I miss that car.

I really miss my dad's old 996 GT3RS seeing this video. We flew from Copenhagen to Dusseldorf to pick it up on my 13th birthday. We got picked up at the airport by a Porsche Center employee in a Panamera who drove us to the Porsche Center. We then drove the GT3RS all the way back home. Great memory!
I had a young man talking smack about my Bentley because it's old (2002 Arnage) trying to make fun of me for not owning a brand new one. So I was all casual asking what year his Bentley was, then I pointed out his early 90s Chevy Beretta with a trash bag on the window and the red fender.
14:30 the reason for this feature is not to explain the location of the battery in a unique way ... It is actually a quite common problem to open the fronk to charge the battery after a month of not driving the car and the battery is dead.. And the button to open the fronk require electricity from the battery... (catch 22) So, the reason for this feature illustrated there.. is actually how to open the fronk with jump start cables.. When your battery died..
Glad to see these going for less, but the build quality improvement in the 997 is palpable. I drove a relatives one, and it felt so much nicer than his old 996.
All depends on if you're willing to pay the premium for the 997. I agree with your assessment but the 996 is a relative bargain and so is still probably the one I'd go for.
Lol... it was the Porsche's 996 that saved the company... oh, and to those who lack a history with Porsche's headlights, check out the to Porsche GT 1 and you will understand where the runny egg headlights was born. I love my 996 Turbo with leather rapped around everywhere including the dashboard. It will never crack like the pleather thats on the 997s. Honestly, it was the headlights that made me want it more because I like being different.

12:50 Doug on "attention to detail": Italian brand Lamborghini uses Italian: cool attention to detail German brand Porsche uses German: lack of attention to detail
Funnily enough, this is one of my favorite generations, because of the different lights. The circles always reminded me of a Beetle, and when this came out, it was like they were finally putting effort in to differentiate it. Plus the long nose, rear end/lights, overall shape, and in that factory metallic blue color with these 5-spoke rims, and tan interior was just awesome in my opinion. Silver on black is nice too.
I love the headlights of the 996, in fact it precedes me the most beautiful porsche of all time. people talk a lot and even more in the car world. Thanks Doug beautiful review
Fabulous car. The headlights looked appropriate for the turbo and 4s, when they transitioned onto the carrera they looked a bit ungainly. It’s also clear from the used car market that they are pretty bullet proof. In all the car magazines when the 996 Turbo came out it was hailed as the greatest Porsche of its day.

@@Torikkaa depends on profession, salary, and what country you live in. Buying a new one is theoretically achievable, but it would cost way more than a decent apartment. Used ones are more affordable, but I have no desire to own an old Cayenne, and a decent first-gen Cayman is two-three times the price of a used Cayenne.
Most likely it a deoderant allergy. I used to have huge pit stains, and my dad did too. Like as soon as we go outside, they become huge and plate sized. I was super embarrassed and tried all the medical deoderants. Then I stopped wearing deodorant and using scented body wash. It just completely stopped. Now I just use a simple hippie deoderant, although anything with antiperspirant actually makes me sweat profusely. Its very odd, I wonder if he has a similar issue.
I used to sweat like crazy with antiperspirant on. Switched to deodorant only and don't have any problems. Definitely shouldn't be wearing two shirts. That's just exacerbating the problem.
@@OnPointFirearms Yeah its super common. People act weird when you suggest it, as it seems really counter intuitive. Plus if you're worried about sweating to the point of two shirts and special deodorant doing nothing seems crazy. I agree, I think almost everyone who has sweating problems, is actually allergic to the anti antiperspirant deodorants. They can make people sweat, and regular deodorant like plain oldspice is fine.
I took your advice and just bought a 2001 911 Turbo hardtop, 6spd with 20,000 miles. Paid $63k. A bit more than I wanted to spend, but I've noticed that since I first watched your video the prices are increasing. I had tried to buy one with 55,000 miles on it for mid $50's, but it sold before I could get deposit down. Then this one popped up. I see convertibles with automatics are still $45k-55k. But I wanted the hardtop. These things are wicked fast. The torque band is insane, and consistent in 4th and 5th gear, especially 4000-6000rpm. Thanks for posting this video!

Doug this is another great video. The 996 Turbo X50 has 1) Synchro problems when downshifting downhill the manual transmission slips out of 2nd gear. Also 2) the clutch slave accumulator fails in many 996 Turbos for no reason. 3) The water cooling lines deteriorate and leak causing some 996 Turbos to overheat the rear wing hydraulics and finally, 4) They burn a lot of oil with white smoke when the fittings pop out.
This car looks similar from 2000's movie "Gone in 60 Seconds" from the beginning of the movie, where they steal from the dealership and escape through the window.
Commented elsewhere before, but yet another good vid. A fab looking Turbo 996. I had a new 997 Carrera S but some how it lacked old Porsche look and lacking in character. Oddly my left leg when in the cruise felt squeezed inwards from the left slightly - RHD. I went for the 996 Turbo and it certainly feels more solid, more positive to drive and very comfortable, has more of the old Porsche character. I love the awesome Le mans racing style lights etc. Way ahead of it's time, also the great Mezger engine power haus. The 996 Turbo is the real deal urban icon - Timeless unique beautiful clean design. I could have gone for a new series but the new ones can look to gimmicky and Bat Girl a bit like the new Astons nowdays just too "kit car". The 996 Turbo genius design of the best of the old and the new was way ahead of it's time. The Turbo 996 is a real deal street true urban Icon, a work of art and no I wouldn't let go if offered over 100k, because I still enjoy the car just so much.
I actually always liked the design of the 996. I was a teenager when it came out and remember all the auto magazines losing it over how Porsche ruined the 911 and how it would be a blemish on their history. Personally, I always thought that the headlights looked like some sort of glass sculpture. Iv always had a bigger issue with the break lights.
At 14:32 I think that’s a symbol for broken / dead battery. Because when the battery is out, you can’t use the normal button power front hatch release. This is a place to add power to release the front hatch to access the battery.
Doug's the kind of guy that reviews a car I'm looking to purchase, and tells the world its the best bargain in the world. Now prices will jump because of that so its not so much of a bargain any more. Thanks Doug. :|
Confirmed, it's not a bargain any more post 2022. In fact, I think it's safe to say that videos like this and social media in general wrecked the whole Porsche market for regular people.
literally the same situation. I would like to own one of these as a mid-longterm plan, and as of right now, here they are around 42,000€ (non-turbo model) which is still reasonable for what it is; so this plan might change, sadly
I love this car so much. I regret everyday not hopping at the chance to buy one of these 10 years ago for only 16k. God I was so dumb. I should’ve taken out that loan 🤦♂️
Back in the late 90"s I worked with two Porsche owners. One had a 993 Cabriolet (Silver) and one had a 996 Carrera 2 (Black). I always looked at the 993 because it was stunning. I could walk past the newer 996 without looking back and I love black cars.
14:30 that image of battery and frunk is there because in case the battery goes flat, you can't open the electronic frunk. So they put a terminal at the fuse box where you can hook up jumper cables to it and open the frunk to access battery.
15:00 It's lockable because it comes out of the Boxster 986 of this area (same interieur). When you're parking with the roof opened - it's a good way to put stuff in that should be safe.

paul zapodeanu yup totally worth it. I was lucky enough to have friends who owned several Porsches. Actually he always gets the latest 911 and lets me drive or lends me the car whenever I want. I did some crazy drifting with a Carrera2
Not a couple years tho right?

If it's not mine I'm too nervous because I don't want to break it...
Here's a quirk: Some dude called Ego from Hungary made a song about you called 'Doug Demuro' (respectively) and it's reached #2 in TH-cam trending here in Hungary.
Who’s No. 1, Hoovie?
looking at the text of that song, sounds like the only reason for the title is to get clicks on youtube, it has nothing to do with the song at all lol
It was actually in slovakia
I cant find the song. Link?
I was really hoping it’d be in English.
I think it's spelled "GRAVINNATE".
"A speed slightly higher than the speed limit"
I can see the future through your windows.
Honestly one of the best reviews you’ve done. You truly gave justice to this car. And just like that, 996s are no longer cheap!
18 years later, still a beautifully designed machine. Always been a fan of the 911 from Porsche.
Doug: "Best sports car bargain ever!"
Normies: "But the headlights are ugly!"
Doug: "You're ugly!"
I prefer it over the buldgy eyeballs. Still a nice looking vehicle
the headlights are ehhhh,imo
"Normies"??? Normies are not people who would pay thousands more for a car with conventional 911 headlights! Doug is spot on. This car is spot on, and the only Porsche I'm truly interested (in part because my budget for another toy is guided by whether or not divorce is a viable option; it isn't). 0-60 in 3.7!? A manual transmission? Truly great looks and a rear set that folds down like it's an SUV?! Superior handling for track days? And somebody is fretting over headlight design? Shut up! I mean, really, Shut up!
Doug is the arch nemesis of the normies, and frankly, that’s a good thing
*[AIRHORN INTENSIFIES]*

"It looks like a 996 wth"
"Here's the 991."
"It doesn't feel like the classic old 911."
"Here's the 992."
"It's so fat jesus they ruined it."
Picky.
From 991 people cannot mess with the engine anymore, too much plastic cover, now everytimes we show people engine, what they saw is 2 fans
You can't make the 911 people happy at all.
and these "purists" probably couldn't even afford one anyway
my favorite 911 generation is 991.2
So they're not the same after all..

Me: I'm so glad I pish-poshed this car because of the headlights.
Also me: Drives a 2005 Ford Escape.
Mike Obie i like the looks of that car actually lol
I had a young man talking smack about my Bentley because it's old (2002 Arnage) trying to make fun of me for not owning a brand new one. So I was all casual asking what year his Bentley was, then I pointed out his early 90s Chevy Beretta with a trash bag on the window and the red fender.
14:30 the reason for this feature is not to explain the location of the battery in a unique way ... It is actually a quite common problem to open the fronk to charge the battery after a month of not driving the car and the battery is dead.. And the button to open the fronk require electricity from the battery... (catch 22)
So, the reason for this feature illustrated there.. is actually how to open the fronk with jump start cables..
CCP will get you! Watch out, gweilo pig!

Lol... it was the Porsche's 996 that saved the company... oh, and to those who lack a history with Porsche's headlights, check out the to Porsche GT 1 and you will understand where the runny egg headlights was born. I love my 996 Turbo with leather rapped around everywhere including the dashboard. It will never crack like the pleather thats on the 997s. Honestly, it was the headlights that made me want it more because I like being different.

I've always loved the headlights too. I think they look great.
If I remember correctly first Porsches were designed from a VW Beetle, hence the headlights
I have pretty much the same opinion on these haha
I love the headlights of the 996, in fact it precedes me the most beautiful porsche of all time. people talk a lot and even more in the car world. Thanks Doug beautiful review
Fabulous car. The headlights looked appropriate for the turbo and 4s, when they transitioned onto the carrera they looked a bit ungainly. It’s also clear from the used car market that they are pretty bullet proof. In all the car magazines when the 996 Turbo came out it was hailed as the greatest Porsche of its day.
Italians: Insist on putting "Benzina" (Gas) on their fuel gauges
Doug:
Germans: Put a german word in only one control/indicator on one car
Doug: *angry quirk noises*
It’s ‘Petrol’ not Gas
I really like that model, INCLUDING the front - maybe it's because drove one back in the days, but I think it's a great car from every angle...
This is still my favorite car. I wish video games had this car. The twist wheels are the most iconic wheel design
I’d be happy with this car, regardless of what the damn headlights and interior look like.
Totally agree, the performance matters more to me
Why people hate that headlights? It looks just fine
Yes, I'd be happy with the car. But those headlights are so damned ugly it hurts my eyes.

Has Doug ever considered that he sweats more because he wears two shirts ? lmfao
TK, that was a surprisingly good answer to that question 👍🏻
I’ve always worn an “undershirt” it’s a small white or black shirt I wear under my nice shirt. It’s very comfortable and I’ve done it all my life.

Doug this is another great video. The 996 Turbo X50 has 1) Synchro problems when downshifting downhill the manual transmission slips out of 2nd gear.
I was a teenager when it came out and remember all the

Personally, I always thought that the headlights looked like some sort of glass sculpture.
Iv always had a bigger issue with the break lights.
