I genuinely think the vaguely creepy elements like the extra Kirbys ‘softly wiggling’ by the doors (which are NEVER addressed btw) are what spurred the franchise’s turn to the eldritch.
I’d also like to highlight that Dedede used to be Kirby’s Bowser, because he’s one of the few nintendo villains, probably one of the only nintendo CHARACTERS, that went through like a full-ass redemption arc that you can trace throughout the games

Dedede's title goes from "Self-Proclaimed King" to "Self-Made King" for a reason: he *earned* it.

@@kildavereven as soon as the _very next game_ in the series, Kirby's Adventure, Dedede makes an effort to turn over a new leaf by sealing away the Nightmare Wizard. Now, the methods in which he utilized in order to do that were questionable, but even so it is a start for him...

The extra kirbies are one of 4 things:
1: fake kirbies created by dedede since that whole section takes place in dedede's castle and he is prone to making little exhibits based on real people
2: not only is this a reincarnated void timeline since kirby is white (the filter with pink kirby is lore inaccurate) but every other time Astral birth void was reincarnated it went to this alternate universe
3: kirby hadn't gotten control over his ability to create things from memory yet and it just created a bunch of himself
      4: a mix of 2 and 3

Interestingly enough, in the kirby novels nobody actually dies when Kirby eats them. He just ends up spitting them back out later and they're perfectly fine. Even with copy abilities!

Also, in Forgotten Land, you can totally attack the Dees in town and they're fine. They fall over and get back up again.
Also also, a different game in the series has you fight a particular waddle dee, who then appears just fine and well in the next room cheering the boss fight on.

I believe the story for this game is that Kirby just arrived in Dreamland by wind. King Deedee, the self imposed king, has started taking the food of Dreamland citizens for himself. In the start of Star Allies, the dark heart causes King Deedee to repeat these actions, which is why he has the waddle dees stealing food in that cutscene in Star Allies.

    King Dedede is a penguin.
A waddle is a way to describe a group of penguins (like how a group of crows can be called a murder)
So my own thoughts is that. Waddle Dees are what Dedede see as his “flock” his waddles if you will

I’m sure you’ll hear plenty about it, but most of Kirby’s weird lore came with its current general director, Shinya Kumazaki. Like Casey said, he came in and retooled a number of things from earlier in the series into what it is now.

  • @dockingwater1713
    @dockingwater1713 ปีที่แล้ว +47

Kirby’s Dreamland is genuinely a Top 10 Kirby game for me. Sure, it’s short and far simpler than the games that follow it due to the lack of copy abilities, but it’s just so fun. Also, the Extra Mode is a genuine challenge and is the hardest traditional Extra Mode in the series that I would actually recommend playing through as well.
I guess there’s also some unique stuff I can explain as well. The first of which are power ups. Obviously the Invincibility Candy goes on to appear in every mainline Kirby game afterwards, but there are three others that never fully leave this game. The first is that microphone that you swallowed. If you were to spit it out, Kirby would scream, killing everything on screen. This power up was turned into Mic later on in Adventure and as an Item in Kirby Fighters 2, but it never appears in this form in a mainline Kirby game. The Mint Leaf (or Sweet Potato in Japan) also appears as an item in Kirby Fighters 2, but the Spicy Curry has been left behind completely outside the Super Smash Bros series.
Also, Pause Lore actually didn’t come to be until Super Star Ultra on the DS in 2008, so you don’t have to worry about pausing during boss fights whenever playing a game before it.
However, there’s more to a couple of these bosses than it seems. Well, aside from Whispy. Dedede is simple too, but that health bar is quite intimidating and shows that he is a force to be reckoned with. Lololo and Lalala in Castle Lololo is quite interesting, as they actually come from The Adventures of Lololo, an NES game that HAL made before making Kirby. Kracko Jr (the mini boss in Kracko’s stage) always has the same pattern to help the player learn all of his moves and prepare them for Kracko later on. And finally, that Blimp, named Kabula, introduces something that would become a staple of Kirby, being the Shmup sections. While not every mainline game has one, most of them do and this is where they all started.
DL1 in general has a bunch of things that would become staples. The level/world intro cutscenes even if we haven’t seen them since Squeak Squad, the Kirby dance, even something involving a moon in the background.

Dream Land has always felt like such a enigma to me. For a while, the only version I had played of it, was when it got remade in Super Star and it’s remake. But now that it’s on NSO I gave it a try and it feels so unfamiliar. Even now Im trying to recall if the remake was ever all that similar, or if the addition of Copy Abilities really made that much of a difference. It’s a weird feeling, and doesn’t really change it’s status as an enigma for me, but I like that. I have such an appreciation for this game now

When Nightmare in Dreamland comes out on the Gameboy Advance you should totally play it. It's the true predecessor to Return to Dreamland. The style of the game is very similar.
Nightmare in Dreamland is also a remake of Adventure which was on the NES and was the first Kirby game with copy abilities. So if anything you should play that one to 100%. It's a bit longer than this game. (Maybe 2-3 hours to 100%)

2:15 cute idea! unfortunately i don't plan on being able to access RTDLDX on launch day so i won't exactly be keeping up with the series as it's aired but I might go back and watch it (similar to what i should do for star allies and forgotten land at some point)
2:57 Yes, the Bronto Burt is called the rmrmrmrmrm
3:25 Well clearly since then there was a parasitic mushroom outbreak that erased the Cappy's minds.
5:20 That IS the Sing Ability, but you swallowed it, which is something I didn't know could happen. Spitting it out makes Kirby screech like you'd expect.
5:58 Issue with that theory: Kirby Right Back at Ya chronologically comes first. It is when Kirby first comes to live and crash lands on Pop Star, it is when the Cappies are still a thriving species, among other things.
Lololo and Lalala are actually just pushing blocks in reference to a Hal Labs game featuring Lolo, who pretty much just looks like Lololo. It's a pushing blocks puzzle game. Also you claim that defeating one of them was like a divorce but according to the anime they're not lovers, but are the split apart masculine and feminine sides of a character known as Fofa (because they're Fololo and Falala in the anime dub.)
9:50 How in the world did you do this
    17:21 ppgz represent
22:05 In some games, Kirby fights Master Hand and can eat him to get the Smash ability. This implies that Super Smash Bros. is canon to the Kirby universe, and Dr. Wily is an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros.
i frankly don't understand the cloning of kirby or the clones of kirby in the levels? i mean, i guess with the cloning of kirby we see those same stars that can clone kirby also make kirby really big in one case with a lot of them so maybe kirby is made out of star matter so when kirby collects star matter they temporarily make more of themself? and uh, hmmm, the synopsis said that dedede stole the twinkle stars so i guess the twinkle stars escaped and took the form of helpful kirbies for kirby to use? somethin' like that i reckon, yeehaw yeehaw.
31:21 Even in Right Back at Ya Dedede gets sad when he thinks Kirby is deceased because it means he's lost a rival, and that's when he's at arguably his most evil.
36:42 Nope, it was intentional. You see, while Kirby was decided to be pink by Masahiro Sakurai in time for the Japanese box art, suddenly Shigeru Miyamoto wanted Kirby to be Yellow instead, and the colour dispute led to Kirby being marshmallow-white on the American box art. This is why the second player Kirby colour is yellow every time.

So fun fact about the Kirby lore stuff. It wasn't really a thing until Shinya Kumazaki took over as series producer in 2008. In fact his the first original main line Kirby game he directed (that wasn't a remake) was Return to Dream Land! So you can think of that game of the start of what would be Kirby lore.

  • @PaintraSeaPea
    @PaintraSeaPea ปีที่แล้ว +6

YEEEAAAAHH I'd definitely love to see you go through a lot of the retro games. I've said this a lot but i think Super Star/Super Star Ultra would be good to try next, especially if you want to play Robobot soon too (a lot of its endgame is heightened by prior knowledge of Super Star). Dream Land 2 + 3 + 64 is a good series to play in that order, those games are actually sort of a trilogy in terms of direction and story (Though you can probably skip DL2 if they don't add it to NSO anytime soon). Kirby's Adventure is a great one on the Switch, too.
As for Kirby cloning himself, I personally think that might just be an innate ability of his. There are a few games where Kirby gets split into copies after being attacked, which might be related to that. Meta Knight and Void (who are implied to be related to Kirby in some way) are both able to do it as well.

I feel like someone could completely make up the reason as to why another Kirby appears in Dedede’s boss rush, and you guys wouldn’t even know…like this:
Oh yeah, King Dedede actually put soul stealing traps near the boss rooms to make sure that no one enters and defeats the bosses holding the Twinkling Stars, but since Kirby has multiple souls (which is the reason why he splits up to dance), he can enter the boss rooms unharmed since Dedede’s troops only designed it to hold one soul, cause who would have multiple souls? And also cause they were lazy.

Next game in the sequence is Kirby’s Adventure, also available on NSO in the NES app if your feelin up to it. First game to have copy abilities, way more stages, meta knight’s debut. After that is Dream Land 2, which isnt on NSO yet, but could be coming soon. Then Superstar, Dream Land 3, and 64, all of which are already on NSO. Amazing Mirror would be next and its confirmed coming soon. Then there was Squeak Squad for the DS and after THAT is Return to Dream Land. Lots of Kirby, but its all there for ya if you feel like it.

  • @RoarOfRa
    @RoarOfRa ปีที่แล้ว

Funny that Casey mentions a double jump, as Kirby was originally supposed to have one. In an interview, it was stated that when making Kirby's Dream Land, the team wanted the player character to have a double jump. However, they had difficulty programming it, and eventually just gave him the ability to fly instead.
3:03 The flying Goomba-like enemies are called Bronto Burts, and they've been in almost every game to date. They've never given copy abilities in any appearance.
3:20 The jumping guys are called Cappies. The anime, since you brought it up, is its own separate canon from the games, though it was based on Adventure, and references to the anime have snuck into the mainline games over the years. As an example, Dedede's castle in Squeak Squad and Epic Yarn is explicitly based on the anime's version of it. Mass Attack has perhaps the most anime references of the series, though they're relegated to the minigames you can unlock.
5:26 That was the microphone, which is the first incarnation of what we later got as the Mike ability.
7:16 I forget where, but if I remember correctly, it was stated that Kirby doesn't have shoes; they're just his feet. Another thing about Kirby's anatomy is that he doesn't have bones or teeth (no idea how he chews sometimes, though).
9:08 Lololo and Lalala are direct references to characters from a previous HAL game for the MSX, Eggerland Mystery. In that game, Lolo was the main character, trying to save his girlfriend Lala. He did this by pushing around green blocks called Emerald Framers, which are what you see Lololo and Lalala moving with.
11:35 You got it right! The one-eyed guys are called Waddle Doos.
13:14 The floating moai heads are called Kabu.
15:04 You did in fact land in a whale's blowhole. Strangely, ordinary whales don't really show up again after this game. There are two recurring whale bosses, however: Acro the orca, and Fatty Whale the blue whale in a sailor suit.
15:24 This is the first appearance of Kabula, as well as the first instance of a SHMUP segment in the series! After Block Ball, Kabula was absent from the series for 12 years outside cameos - only to make a surprise return as a boss in Super Star Ultra's "Revenge of the King" sub-game. She did serve as a boss one more after that, but I won't say what it is to avoid spoilers.
19:50 Kracko's eye form hasn't had many appearances as a boss fight proper, for some reason.
22:53 Kracko's rain attack was first introduced in Super Star, and he's had it ever since.
24:14 Speaking of Super Star, this boss rematch segment was left out of "Spring Breeze." Instead, you land in a hallway with a door you enter to fight King Dedede.
25:29 That enemy is called Mumbies.
28:14 It really is just a "first game nonsense" situation. There's not a reason for the fake Kirbies or refighting the bosses in truncated versions of their levels other than because HAL thought it would add to the game. The series didn't really have interconnected canon or lore as we know it until Shinya Kumazaki took over, and began slowly tying everything together starting with Return to Dream Land, and culminating in Star Allies. The only things that really carried over from this game are Kirby's dome-shaped house - which was built by the people of Dream Land as thanks for Kirby saving them - and King Dedede developing a rivalry with Kirby.
30:33 Yes, you can unlock King Dedede in Air Ride! You can use him in Air Ride mode after beating 1000 total enemies.
36:46 Kirby is shown as white on the box only on the North American boxart, and it's to reflect how he looks in-game. Sakurai always intended him to be pink, however, and Kirby is depicted as such on the Japanese boxart. On the note of color, Miyamoto thought Kirby should be yellow; as a reference to this, player two Kirby is usually yellow.
38:28 The story is that King Dedede snuck into Dream Land one night, stole all of its food for a midnight snack, and stole the Twinkle Stars as well just to be a jerk. While he kept the food for himself, he gave the Twinkle Stars out to his closest henchmen, the game's bosses. Since Dream Land's population needs the Twinkle Stars to gather food, they were faced with starvation until Kirby appeared and said he'd go get their food and Twinkle Stars back. As noted above, the Dream Landers built Kirby's house as thanks, and he's lived with them ever since.

Kirby and Void termina originate from the same being that is a force of nature. When when Kirby was born he was formed with positive energy which is why he’s so pure and happy, while void was only formed with negative energy.
In cannon Kirby is not as destructive and murderous as people say he is, that’s just in the gameplay. Canonically he barely kills any waddle dee.

The QOTD is an interesting question for anyone who played Forgotten Land, really.
Now I wonder how many deaths *I* took, both counting and not counting suicides (for failed secrets and "clear without taking damage").
For you at least it *can* be known, since it's on record. Though it requires having time on your hands that few people have.

So my theory on the extra weird Kirbys during the boss rush is that at least in this game, all of citizens are Kirbys (you can kinda see at the end all the Kirbys jumping for the food), so maybe those are other Kirbys helping you out.
Also yeah, you guys should totally play Super Star. It has a lot of content but most of it is about as short as this game. So you could definitely play it in chunks like that.

I've never played Kirby's Dream Land, or even watched a full playthrough of it before this one, and I was NOT ready for those mysterious dancing Kirbys. What the heck are they?! Batamon? Illusions?
Maybe the whole boss rush segment was Kirby finding himself inside his own mind, similar to the Magicant segment in EarthBound, and once he puts all the pieces of himself together, he unlocks his true power and is able to copy (except not yet). Maybe, when Dark Meta Knight slices Kirby into four Kirbys in Amazing Mirror, those Kirbys are the ones found here???
I'm so confused, yet so intrigued.

fun fact, the kirby sequels split into two paths at this point- sequels made by two different teams. kind of like Sonic 2 and Sonic CD except for more than just one entry each!
theres the more… advanced feeling? im not sure how to describe it. more modern feeling? sequel path with:
Kirby’s Adventure (NES) and Kirby Super Star (SNES) which is my preferred route
and the other is what people have coined as the Dark Matter Trilogy with:
Kirby’s Dreamland 2 (GB), Kirby’s Dreamland 3 (SNES), and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64)
the first path would probably be much easier to knock out, and perhaps more satisfying to experience since it includes the introduction of meta knight as well as other things introduced in super star, but the Dark Matter trilogy is worth at least reading about i think :]

So fun thing with this game is it actually has a few secrets one of which is there is a secret door in the moon tile on one of the stages. You already seen the extra game mode which is just the same game but harder and when you beat it you get the button combo for configuration menu. Also, which you sadly didn't see, the mike is actually the precursor to the mike ability but you have to spit it out rather than swallow it.
Also Kirby's Adventure is actually one of the few Kirby games I don't recommend purely because the remake (Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland) is the same game but better. The other ones are Kirby's Super Star, (Play Kirby's Super Star Ultra instead) Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, (the OG, KIrby's Epic Yarn, is a better completion experience) and hopefully, Kirby's RtD will be replaced by the upcoming Remake.

aw man you broke the karkat-style reverse playing
the other early kirby games would also be good for short little series, like kirby's adventure, also available on the nes online, but you got a lotta series goin on so take your time
and as far as i can tell, they have never explained what the heck was goin on with the whole collectable kirby clones, but! sakurai has said that the clones that appear during the dance was because it was "more fun that way." so yes, ian, you were actually right!

  • @Yirggzmb
    @Yirggzmb ปีที่แล้ว

Ahhh DL1! :D Fair warning this is a novel sorry lol
Up to fly is weird, but it was standard for most of the early games. It has its pros and cons, but it makes swapping REALLY HARD. I have a long standing habit of pressing up AND a mid air to fly because it means I've got it right no matter what lol
Flying Goomba is a Bronto Burt :P
So fun story! It's not in any of the games - maybe the japanese manual for Dream Course? - but the townsfolk actually apparently built Kirby's house in Dream Land after the events of this game! They love having him around. The trick is that the needs of gameplay and the needs of story are different. Also, this game DOES have a plot, it's just only in the manual. Dedede stole the Kingdom's food. All of it. And Kirby volunteered to get it back. The beginning of Star Allies where Dedede is hoarding food again is meant to be a callback.
And yes, the Gameboy color is the reason Whispy's mouth looks so weird. He looks perfectly fine in black and white
Soundtrack! The music in this game forms the backbone of most of the series. Green Greens is obvious of course. Castle Lololo has been used for a lot, namely Dynablade in the anime and Super Star, but also it's the music that plays after the goal game in Star Allies! Float Islands and Bubbly clouds show up from time to time too. Mt Dedede music is, of course, another obvious one. And the powerup theme shows up occasionally too. I think the only song that doesn't get a lot of love is the title theme.
So this game doesn't have copy abilities, but yeah there's proto abilities with the mic, bomb, and curry items. And yeah, Smash was created by Kirby's original creator! Masahiro Sakurai. He left the company to do other things (and a lot of smash lol) after, I think, Air Ride. But Sakurai was Kirby's first father as the fans sometimes put it. Current dad Shinya Kumazaki is pretty cool too. But yeah, you'll see a lot of overlap with Smash and early Kirby because Sakurai :3 (another joke is that Smash is just secretly a Kirby spin off series lol)
Also, it's entirely fair to die to Dream Land normal mode. It's Gameboy. It's weird to get used to.
Casey recognizing references! Pon & Con in Star Allies aren't specifically these two, but it's 100% the same kind of boss. Pon & Con are from DL3, who were probably a callback to these two. THESE two are Lololo and Lalala. They're in the anime too, except they can fly for some reason. The really crazy thing is that they're actually a callback to a game series HAL worked on before Kirby: The Adventures of Lolo, otherwise known as the Eggerland series. One of them is even in the NES online thing. It's a puzzle style game, but the main gimmick is that you're Lolo trying to save your girlfriend Lala, and to do so you *push boxes*. HAL has loved their references since very very early, it's hilarious.
Easter island head guys are Kabu! Kabu is in the anime too...as the giant wise head thing that everyone goes to for advice in the pilot lol
Scarfy does indeed have an explosion hitbox in this game. It's a bit rough. I think future games made that less obnoxious. Scarfy is probably the enemy that most people would be scared by as a kid, I think. Looks cute...until you try to inhale it. Then it gets a nightmare face and chases after you.
Pause screen lore is a thing that wasn't introduced until Return to Dream Land, and even then in the original RtDL it was only a couple end game bosses that got it. Based on the remake demo, they're adding it to everyone? Which is really cool. It didn't become an "every boss fight" staple until Triple Deluxe. This game DOES have a neat little easter egg if you leave the game paused for a while though.
No one knows why Kirby clones. Also the "touch the weird dancing copy of yourself to continue to the boss" thing is a weird occurrence that hasn't happened again. It's pretty odd and unexplained. I like to joke that they ARE the dancing clones, but no one really knows.
Dedede's first appearance in the franchise

I was hoping you'd do this when the Nintendo direct announced Gameboy! The roots of Kirby! Now when this gets referenced in some way in every single future Kirby game, you can spot it.
(those flying goombas are Bronto Burt)
Yes, you died due to health loss a few times.
So, that "extra game" you skipped over? It's genuinely pretty difficult, since in addition to enemies being faster, more aggressive, and some new variants (bosses too), you take double damage.
None of the others are quite this short, even Dreamland 2 (which is actually the third game, since Adventure came out before it) will probably need two parts.

  • @mklip2001
    @mklip2001 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Extra game could be cool to try yourself, though I don't know if it would be worth making a video for it. You take double damage from almost everything, and the enemy patterns are usually more aggressive. The blimp boss (Kaboolah) is particularly nasty in Extra Game, in my opinion.
Also, the next two games in the series are Kirby's Adventure (NES) and Kirby Super Star (SNES), though maybe Kirby's Dream Land 2 (GB) came in between. These are all much longer games. I would imagine you'd want at least 3 hours of time for your first playthrough of Kirby's Adventure. And by the way, every game except for Dream Land has copy abilities.

Aayyy! Decided to try out the first Kirby game, huh? Interesting! Never even imagined that you would try the retro games, but I'm pleasantly surprised! There isn't anything special to say about this game because there aren't any special details to note. I guess the only thing that I can say is that this game was Sakurai's first game and he developed this game to be something that even babies could easily beat, meaning that the game is just 40 minutes of pure and simple fun!
If you're interested in playing more classic Kirby games, which you should absolutely do by the way, then the next Kirby game released after Dream Land 1 was Kirby's Adventure! The first Kirby game to feature Copy Abilities! It's also available in the Switch Online list of retro games!
I know that you have your hands full with Return to Dream Land Deluxe, but consider playing the retro games every now and then.
As a closing thought... uhhh, listen to the game's music, I guess? The entire game is literally, like, 10 tracks, so you can get that done in half an hour. You may even recognize leitmotifs in musics you may hear in future Kirby games you choose to play!
