I think it's gonna be really fun to go through the older games in chronological order! There is a real sense of progression in gameplay, style, and characters that gets built upon as the series progresses. The more recent games are so callback-heavy that it'll be fun to see how much of it you'll pick up on once you've done it in order

This is the beginning of SUPER obtuse puzzles in Kirby games, just as a heads up. This game, Dream Land 3, and 64 (known by Kirby fans as the Dark Matter Saga) all have some super tough puzzles just because you need a specific ability/friend combo, and it doesn’t tell you until you get there, and even then you kinda have to figure it out sometimes. In this game it’s pretty simple since there’s only three buddies and so few abilities, but just be warned
That said, This game definitely has 2...maybe 3, the last one is kinda just trial and error "left or right choice" really...but the other 2 are "you absolutely will have to redo the entire stage if you miss a step or don't act quickly enough, don't have or bring the right friend/power from another stage" combinations.
Worst case scenarios in Dreamland 3 or 64 is you just need to bring the right friend and copy ability, with only one particular "wtf" case in Dreamland 3.
Dreamland 2 has a stage that requires you to, in "have you been paying attention" exam style, use all 3 friends in a sequence with the right copy abilities traded back and forth across the stage, and it's much easier to lose a copy ability or an animal buddy in this game. (Goshdang propeller bombs are the stuff of nightmares for this reason alone).

I think those are the only kirby games that require you to enter stages with an ability that you can only find in a different stage in order to solve certain puzzles, right? It's something most of the other games seem to try to avoid

its bassed on the kasa-obake, an umbrella yokai. Its a type of yokai under the tsukumogami (possesed yokai item) category.
Yokai are like Japanese fairys, spirits and demons. They are in old art in paintings, but yeah are common in anime and games. If your curious kasa-obake are born from neglected, old, broken, un-used umbrellas, similar to other tsukumogami.
I was gonna wait we were close to the end of RTDLDX, but I have a fun idea! When you finish a Kirby game, you should go back to Star Allies and do a Guest Star run of the Dream Friend representing that game! It'll be like a nice victory lap, and you'll notice things that reflect the corresponding game!

Yay! This was once my favorite Kirby game. While that's not the case anymore, and nowadays I actually consider this game to be fairly mid, I hope you have a lot of fun with it anyway!
As others pointed out, this is the first game of the so-called "Dark Matter Trilogy", made up of Kirby's Dream Land 2, 3, and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (all on NSO now!). The linking thread throughout these games - besides the namesake, Dark Matter - is that they are all directed by the mysterious Shinichi Shimomura. We know nothing about this man besides name, gender, a single leaked photo, and the fact he directed these 3 games. Still, from the similarities between these games, you can very well tell how his vision for the Kirby series diverges from those of Sakurai, Kawazaki, and other one-off directors the series had.
I find it fascinating how this trilogy is the only way we have of peaking into the mind of this mysterious person, just like Yume Nikki is the only way we have of peaking into the mind of Kikiyama.
2:40 Funny story about this-the devs recently confirmed that Kirby *does not* kill enemies in eating them, in an interview on Polygon. Personally, I never really thought he did-it never made sense to me, for a multitude of reasons-but confirmation is always nice.
5:10 another funny story: a 1.1.1 update came out for this game, seemingly only changing the description from saying “Rick the Hamster, Kine the Fish, and Coo the Owl,” to stating that they only *look* like those species.
It actually caused a bit of a hubbub, before people realized that the trio had *always* been referred to as not-actual-animals in Japan

When you go back in a stage to collect a "Rainbow drop", (the croissant looking things) You can just exist the stage after collecting it and it will still save.

Dream Land 2 gets a bit of an iffy rap because it's so old and it's got some really obtuse puzzles. But honestly I freaking adore this one.
Also yeah, like other people have said, Kirby isn't really killing anyone other than the occasional final boss. And some of those come back anyway.
It sounds like you've read the manual. Maybe? The games genuinely always have more information in the manual than they could fit in the game. And we lose that with these virtual console versions since they don't include the actual manual. But I copied some of the info from it anyway for anyone who hasn't seen it:

Kirby lives in the rainbow islands of Dream Land. The rainbows that connect the islands have been stolen by the evil Dark Matter! In order to defeat Dark Matter, you need the Rainbow Sword. It is said that the sword has something to do with the Rainbow Drops hiding on the islands. Will Kirby be able to save the Dream Land from Dark Matter?

The Gameboy color colors look weird, which is sad. The Super Gameboy adaption for the SNES had much prettier colors. You're right that this is wonderful for a Gameboy title though, even if Adventure is probably the prettiest NES game ever
I'm loving you discovering the joy of animal buddy combos. Coo + parasol is broken af lol You're also already discovering the struggle of collecting all the rainbow drops. A lot of them are blocked by tiles that can only be broken by specific abilities. And you have to memorize what each one is. Also this second drop literally forces you to leave and come back. You genuinely cannot get the required ability until you've passed the point of no return and then have to replay. BUT you can leave the level via pause after collecting the drop and it'll save, unlike modern games.
The goal game in DL2 is REALLY tough.
The minibosses in this game are great. Casey has it 100% right on the weird parasol enemy with the sandal. Japanese folklore is wild. ALSO the black blob you got is indeed Gooey - he only shows up when the bag would otherwise drop the same animal friend you already have. Gooey gives you health though, so it's not nothing. (Gooey is p2 in Dream Land 3, that's what you're remembering)
By the way, I recommend going back into the boss doors after beating them. No spoilers from me.
Whispy has a mask because I think it's a joke about allergy season. He's a tree with allergies.
The piggy bosses are Nruff and Nelly. They're the second edition of the "boss runs across platforms" boss archetype that you first saw in Star Allies.
And yeah, classic Kirby bosses I often prefer to fight without ability. You lose your ability so easily that I found it easier, even ignoring the better damage
Good to hear Kirby's Adventure is coming! I'm very interested to see what you make of it, as that game could get surprisingly difficult at times, and it also established a lot of the reoccurring gameplay mechanics you've seen in later games.
Dream Land 2 is the classic Kirby I'm least familiar with, having only played it twice. I really like how they gave each animal friend their own theme, and as a gameboy game, it's still on the shorter side of things, which is nice if you want something to play though in an afternoon. And it's so satisfying finding the full clear secret in each world, which thankfully haven't yet reached the lengths they went to in Dream Land 3 in terms of difficulty/obscurity.
Just so you know, that whole "first letter of every world" thing doesn't hold for every Kirby game, or even most of them. The ones that do are fun, though. For instance (sticking to ones you've completed here), Adventure is V-I-B-G-Y-O-R, or reversed R-O-Y-G-B-I-V, for the colors of the rainbow. And Forgotten Land is N-E-W-W-O-R (LD in the last level).
Yeah, classic Kirby bosses are usually designed such that using abilities lets you hit them at will and much more easily, but the tradeoff is much lower damage per hit compared to fighting without a power.

Because recently, it was confirmed in an interview that they don't actually get eaten at all! In fact they simply dissapear, and re-appear somewhere else after being swallowed by Kirby.
...Which...In my opinion...is actually FAR more morbid. Imagine thinking you're going to die - then suddenly waking up in the middle of nowhere...scary!
YES I LOVE THIS GAME. This is the first Kirby game I played so I have so much nostalgia for it, I'm so excited to watch y'all play. It's already funny seeing you love Coo with the umbrella ability so much since I almost exclusively used cutter with Coo.

THE DARK MATTER SAGA BEGINS
You can use Start to quit out of stages you've already beaten once. If you already got the rainbow piece (the "croissant"), then quitting out still lets you keep it. Also, you can play a bonus game if you go back to boss stages after having beaten them, and passing those perfectly is required for 100%.
You have begun the trilogy, this will be interesting, I heavily suggest to do dream land 3 and 64 next

I'm going to guess that part of the issue with the Adventure playthrough is the fact that the NES NSO port is abnormally unstable and crashes in specific conditions (including if you attempt to find the secret HAL room in 1-3, or take too long in the penultimate boss fight.)
Either that or they get hung up on the secret switch in 6-4, which has a notoriosly secret door.
That was the last switch I ever had to find and it took "holding up" on literally every tile of the stage until I found the door.
I realized something after watching newer episodes where they mention the "pain" of Kirby's Adventure.
They must have experienced the instability crashes of the NSO version, which infamously does NOT update its save data correctly if the app isn't closed properly.
If they were marathoning the qholengame in one run, and experienced a crash at the very end, despite Kirby autosaving itself, they would have lost ALL progress since booting up the app.
Yes, this one is gonna be fun! Looking forwards to this one, shouldn't be too long. Everyone else has said enough about this, so I won't. Just gonna enjoy the ride. Oh yeah, but...think about revisiting the boss stages. Just try it.

So I assume you've already beaten this game since it's so short but I will say there are only 8 abilities and they all return from adventure but because the animal friends there is technically 32 since each ability has 4 variations.
Also Super Star (the next kirby game) is the first one with multiplayer or if you play dream land 3 that also has multiplayer.

Oh boy Dreamland 2. I’ll be honest, I don’t agree with the common opinion of “there is no bad Kirby game” and this game is the only mainline Kirby game that I’ve beaten that I genuinely do not like. However, since my main gripe with this game has yet to become really apparent, I will hold off on being overly negative for now. I’ll just say now that the Rainbow Drops become the single worst collectible in all of mainline Kirby in later Worlds, but again, I’ll wait until you get there to talk about it.
For now I will say that I don’t dislike everything about this game. I think the Animal Buddy concept is neat and I really enjoy Rick, Kine, and Coo as characters. Plus, this game is quite impressive for a Gameboy game too.

This game is pretty impressive for the GameBoy. It has an interesting mechanic and some of the best visuals on the system. Too bad it looks disgusting with the color filter. I wish we got the Super Gameboy colors instead

How are you gonna handle the games locked in the 3DS and Wii U eshops?
All of the mainline kirby games have had physical releases. There's definitely some spin offs that are now "lost" because of the closure, but I haven't really heard them say much about checking out the spin offs.
Also, for the 3ds games, unless they have a 3ds with a capture card/video out modification (maybe they do, I dunno) we're looking at emulation anyway.
Just fyi, this game came out before the gameboy color, and was very much not built for it, so if your wondering why some of the colors look hideous, thats why. I prefer the gameboy pocket filter for dreamland 1 and 2 personally.
Kinda sad NSO doesn’t have Super GameBoy colors as an option. SGB Dream Land 2 probably has my favourite visuals of a Kirby game. It just really adds to the atmosphere imo

@@crownednova lol yeah, I have a hunch. I remember sitting on my bed playing the virtual console version on my Wii, finally getting fed up and just looking up the solutions to some of the buttons. Frickin invisible doors... And there's a non zero chance I was looking this stuff up on the Wii built in browser because I didn't have a smart phone yet lol

Well I want to call this something but nothing quite fits. A pincer movement isn't quite right and burning the candle at both ends is too negative. Whatever you call it, I like the way you're tackling the Kirby franchise.
