Another thing about Taharka, is it's vulnerable to heat status, so a Mustard bomb can insta-kill it; but it is a pain to get Mustard Bomb when all alone.

Quina Quen's personal pronoun in Japanese is “aitsu” one that doesn't have particular gender connotations. An updated translation would likely change the s/he to the more recent gender neutral they.

in the spanish translation they just went with she, which makes sense given that quina can use some girl equipment, and given there's not really gender neutral pronoun in spanish, I agree with the decision

I can't believe how simple that take on Quina's gender is and yet strangely was not obvious.

I actually use Quina in every co-op run of FFIX, which my partner and I play every few years because we both ADORE IT. It's such a fun feature that should have been in more entries, limited to battle even as it unfortunately was.

Though I was surprised to see that even the FFIX Wiki completely misleads the player with its information stating that Quina's current HP needs to be high for it to be effective. I went ahead and fixed the Wiki so future players checking it out won't be confused!

If we're Going to be pedantic about this, quina uses both he and she in different languages, but in the english version (the one you're playing) its he. Though none of that really matters anyway since quinas species is genderless
Ah Quina...love this character. They were a godsent in my playthrough.
Fun fact: Quina is around 90 years old, making them one of the oldest party members in the series. And as for pronouns, Opera Omnia settled on they/them, which makes the most sense.

Honestly Quina has got to be my favourite character to play as in FF9 due to Quina being a Blue Mage (An underutilized class both in Final Fantasy and out) and having magic that's either more utility in nature or can break the game in two under the right circumstances.
Too bad Quina has a crappy limit break, Plus some of Quina's Blue Magic is rather gimicky in nature.
Considering there's a Speed Run for the game with this character solo there are ways to speed it up some.
BUT THE TEACHINGS
Quinas species are like frogs. They can swap between the two genders.
A missed opportunity to name the final weapon Chefs Knife and get it from the true master Tonberry

Short answer. Yes definitely.
Long answer:Quina has a Blue magic that is a sure damage attack that can can go 9999 damage limit without any other stat factors except for level and frogs catched - *Frog Drop* . They also have *Mighty Guard* which allows them to cast Protect and She'll and reduce incoming damage. *Angel Snack* which cures any Status effect and *White wind* which can heal them and the whole Party. The only downside for Quina is their speed and their low spirit.
Lv 5 death also helps for exp grind and additionally night is a sure hit sleep spell that could be very handy depending on the situation. Honorable mention: she also has access to needle fork very early and with add status she could petrify some of the more annoying scripted encounters, with some luck ofc. Without Quina most perfect lv1 speedruns would not be possible.
You could've used limit glove early on, if you walk into bosses with 1 hp (or any fight you can hit for 9999) no matter what, to breeze thru early game.
So funny. You mentioned this to me during the stream today and I was thinking earlier that day about a challenge with Quina being one I wanted to see. Crazy coincidence! Quina must be one of the best fitting FFIX characters. In terms of the game being the most irreverant of them all; and this character potentially being the most irrevant one in the whole series.
If you were to rank these solo challenges with all the party members from easiest to hardest, how would it go?

I always felt Quina was literally genderfluid in the sense of Quina is what you want Quina to be. For me Quina might be a girl and for you Quina might be a guy. That’s the great thing about an ambiguous character like this. You are the one who gets to decide.

I usually like to abuse of the statistics to make possible to not to get influenced by AI and take advantage. It's pretty much what made my run vs Ozma easier on my NesuCross Channel.

Fun fact, in Italian (my native language) and Spanish (plus some other European languages) there is no genderless pronouns and Quina is defaulted as female. Same for Quale, while Quan (Vivi's grandfather is always referred to as male).

quinas always struck me as a they/them personally, but doesnt hit me as a character who would give two shits about what you call them as long as they can just eat what they please. on that note, even if characters are fictional, misgendering trans and/or nonbinary characters intentionally is markedly disrespectful not only to the creators intentions, but also the people who also identify like said character! to cover my bases even if i think everyone reading this will understand, this is not a jab at this video or tanta because it was clearly not the case, and i enjoyed it greatly.

Concerning the Qu kin gender's, in the italian dub of FFIX, Vivi refers as "his grandfather", Quan.
So the Qu tribe might have male and female individuals. Morover, Quina's teacher is hinted to be a woman.
Finally, and this is personal opinion, I always considered Quina to be female because her name finishes with an "A",as feminine names generally finish in italian.
I've never considered the all thing, prior to my atching this video though. 😅
