You didn't go over Sorceress Edea 😥 she was my favorite one to play as despite how brief she was playable. But once she converted to being a good guy you get to have her in your party and I'm sure she has stats and all that since ya know she's also Matron. Such a large plotline not mentioned
The Rinoa is Ultimecia fan theory is a lot better than the dumb ass “squall is dead and dreaming”, yeah shot through the shoulder in a world of magic totally says “he died”
Plus the Squall is Dead theory often associates with that creepy image of Squall who had a hole in his face, from the ending of the game. Which contradicts the theory as it suggests Squall was killed through the shoulder, not his face.
So, I found out as a kid that you actually CAN look under Selphie's skirt. If you have her in the middle of the party, then have a character on one end cast a spell on the character on the other end, and it triggers the special camera movement, it will give you a view from the ground which will look under the dress. I was like 12 when I first played this game alright?
The only way this works with the premise and story is if that's the memory he experienced at that moment Meaning that it was based on frustration and not violence Ff8 is based on the perspective of squall and to a lesser degree his friends to heart
I love that we can listen to what Squall is thinking in the bracket textboxes. Maybe that's why some people might not like Squall, but it gives us more depth on his character development. I guess Cloud is similar too, but it's just we couldn't see what in Cloud's mind (isnt it?), so fans are free to imagine whatever character he is.
I suppose it's tricky - from a story telling point of view - whether or not you show a character's inner thoughts and feelings, because you're right, that certainly impacts the way we see them and understand them.
I remember getting this when it first dropped in 1999, all nicely wrapped in its plastic, the cover of Rinoa and Squall embraced, the manual waiting to be read and savoured, and those discs looking back at me waiting to be played... Wish I kept it. No idea what happened to it.
Yeah, call me old fashioned but I wish physical games still came with manuals. At least some come with art books but you have to pay for the collector edition to get them...
@@FF-Gamr Well, to be fair, they did have personal and/or event websites that would later be called "blogs" in the 1990s. Can't speak for the "Selphie" name though 😀
@@Seekarr A bit anachronistic of a term for the 90s. We called them forum posts or online diaries back then, though we would call those sites blogs today

Seifer tidbitt. His sword/gunblade style is highly influenced by Laguna. As Laguna played the knight in the show "knight and sorceress" in game. So Seifer is using galbadian style. Could be just reusing assets but chronologically speaking in game, it connects
I really like that fact, the way that Seifer's kinda arrogant stance was influenced by what he saw. Which would be part of his romantic dream to be the hero/knight. It makes a lot of sense when you realise it.
Laguna/Seifer's stance is not "Galbadian style", I'm having trouble understanding how you could even reach that conclusion. As early as Dollet, you fight Galbadian soldiers wielding swords in both hands. The implication is that Seifer/Laguna are both lazy and overconfident -- supported by the notion that Seifer never wears his SeeD uniform during the landing; he thinks he's better than the standard.
@@jackstack2136 can you even read? there is only one implication here. and that is they have the same stance. chronologically speaking, the in-game show was famous even before Seifer was born. and being the Sorceress knight fan boy that he is and then Laguna playing the part and doing the same style Seifer uses in the game only mean 2 things. its either reusing assets or Seifer really did just copy. and both of those things i have said in my comment. there is none of that lazy overconfident BS youre spouting. that is just you projecting yourself.
Yeah, I have to admit that I never really interpreted it as anything too serious. Maybe the graphical limitations actually helped in that respect. I was quite surprised that anyone would see it that way.
I thought the same thing. Like a throw your hand up in the air kind of thing. When I played when I was younger (probably about 10-13) I still never was under the impression that he was trying to actually hit her
Yeah. You know it's like when you're annoyed at a close friend and just make some gesture pretending to hit them. You aren't actually trying to hit them.
Noone is pushing this. It's the writer himself who admjtted "He shouldnt be hitting her. Its really not good to have a guy hitting a girl." 02:24 So basically we're all wrong and Squall is actually a wife beater. Writer's own words.
In regards to using Devour on Rinoa during the boss fight against Sorceress Adelle you CANNOT actually use devour on Rinoa. I’ve tried many times on the PS-1 version, the re-release on the PS-3 and up through the PlayStation marketplace and even on the FF VIII remaster from a couple years ago. Every time I try to use Devour on Rinoa it just lets me confirm the action but when a character starts to move forward to perform the action they stop(like when they move to use “draw-stock” and it fails the draw then it shows a text box saying “Cannot Devour!” and resumes active time in the battle. Despite what the game’s strategy guide and online sources say you CANNOT devour Rinoa as doing so means an automatic game over and failure in the fight.
Kitase actually back tracked on that statement he made about Rinoa not being Ultimecia. Theres a video on youtube you can watch where he addresses it called "Yoshinori Kitase retracts his statement on Rinoa/Ultimecia fan theory being debunked". He said he didn't think so but there are 2 other writers including Tetsuya Nomura and someone else might have made the Ultimecia being Rinoa from the future a thing.
Oh yeah, good point, I think I did read that about him saying that the others may have had different ideas or interpretations that didn't make it into the game. Still, it's interesting that it wasn't an aspect of the story that he initially considered.
To me, the question is not "Is Rinoa Ultimecia?" but rather "In what sense is Rinoa Ultimecia?" Perhaps it's not in the literal corporeal sense, as in "Bruce Wayne = Batman". Perhaps it's more like "Jecht = Sin". Some piece of Rinoa's mind was forwarded down the line of witches until it became part of Ultimecia. And that little piece of mind contained the nagging desire to reunite with Squall and, thus, to return to the time where she was together with him. And this manifested itself in Ultimecia's subconscious, where it was transformed into the plan to compress time, thus fulfilling the desire to reunite with Squall.
I've always wondered what type of flavoured bread Zell liked since I first learned that his favourite food was actually flavoured bread (and not hot dogs). Glad to know that it's Melon Bread! thanks for that!
11:40 Owls calling Rinoa "princess" is more of sarcastic nature. Quite common in Japanese culture (at the time). Calling someone "Hime-sama" could implied the person as spoiled or fragile (depending on the context). So it's far fetched of a connection to Gaelic lore.
The fact that Zell is the only character who can't reach max accuracy is incredibly funny to me. Bro uses his own dang hands. This is even funnier when his fellow party members use the powers of gun, sword with gun, whip, nunchaku, and BOOMERANGING SAW BLADE ON A SLINGSHOT. To add to this, it's a plot point that the guy with the gun loses accuracy when anxious, yet he still has better control of his shots than Zell of his fists.
I feel like the demo including Rinoa and having her be the only one who can summon GFs was a hint at her powers/role in the story (strong magic user --> eventually a sorceress). They did the exact same thing by including Aerith in the FF7 demo.
Another fact, Rinoa is named Linoa in some other versions of the game Which, not only would be closer to the Japanese pronunciation but also would mean something like 'late' Which adds some more to the ultimecia theory and time compression Especially if we read squall evolution through the game as a personification of grief With his gforce ring named griever, used by ultimecia, future Rinoa grieving her lost of squall, trying to compress time to relive her happy memory of him forever Also going to the 5 stages of grief, being quite obvious with her last monologue before you defeat her, even with the mistranslation. And there is many more 'coincidences' for it to be just that I won't point them all but at some point it can't be ignore and I wouldn't be surprise if one of the author actually wrote it that way, not kitase obviously 😂
@@zockerking2061They pronounce an r sound that is extremely close to how we pronounce r in English in some contexts. The ɹ sound is very similar to the ɾ sound.
They should have also mentioned that the Gunblade in Parasite Eve II actually functioned like Squall's trigger mechanic in Final Fantasy 8. Hitting the R1 bumper when Aya's attack landed would cause an explosion for MASSIVE damage. I feel like it's been 10+ years since I've played PE2 but if I remember right; the Gunblade trigger was the second most powerful attack in the game, next to the railgun that took a full 5 seconds to charge up each individual shot.
in 8th grade, my classmate julia looked just like quistis. i was scary much they looked alike. Even our teachers, our parents and other said she looks likes her.
The "Rinoa is Ultimecia" theory has a lot of good points, specially if you check all dialogue ingame. And in a recent interview director went back and said that maybe thats what they intended on doing, but he dsn't remember clearly since it was so long ago. Besides what he says, I really think it's what they meant because everything in Ultimacia last words weighs more, the story has a dramatic turn with both a Happy and Sad ending happening at the same time
Here’s what a lot of fans don’t know, Yoshinori Kitase later retracted what he said about Rinoa not being Ultimecia. He stated that since FFVIII was written by him, Kazushige Nojima, and Tetsuya Nomura, Ultimecia being a Rinoa from an alternate timeline was likely Nojima & Nomura’s ideas. This is firmly the case in the Spin Off games like Dissidia or Mobius, where some of Ultimecia’s traits & abilities were lifted from Rinoa.
While I'm not 100% sure about the theory, there are ways in which I think it makes sense. Whether we'll ever get it totally confirmed by Nojima or Nomura, or included in a potential remake, is another matter!
#6 I don't think he should have made a statement about that because for me as a gamer and a kid back then, I took it as somewhat of just a sway.. Like swaying a fly that is annoying.. Never in my mind did I took it as Squall hitting her.. They were so pixelized ffs so how can you ever come up with that.??
Not sure if it’s still possible. But on the original version on the PS one, a second player can be used. Only in battles. Should be in the battle menu. So technically, the part in Charlie’s Angels was correct.
I really love this video! FF 8 was the first that got me into the series and I absolutely still have great love for this game! Thanks for all the awesome facts!! Also, I really CANNOT imagine Kitase or anyone going with the ''Squall is Dead'' theory over the ''Rinoa is Ultimecia'' theory. Making Ultimecia be a more fractured, future version of Rinoa would actually make a lot of sense and flesh out both of their characters more. Squall being dead for literally 3/4 of the game would really be awful, and I'm not sure how they could implement that without butchering the game.
Thank you 😊 that's good to hear! And yes, I pretty much agree with you! Squall being dead is an interesting enough concept at first, but then beyond that, I can't see how it could ever really work, narratively. Rinoa = Ultimecia, however, seems much more plausible given that we don't really know much about Ultimecia's origins, and barely actually get to see her in the game.
Do not forget about Auron wearing glasses in Final Fantasy 10. In Final Fantasy 14, you can wear it as a glamour accessory as part of the avatar’s character.
Thank you for adding that translations! 5:09. Actually Squall is not that cold, i believe, from his japanese phrases/nuances. And sometimes it's rather funny.. "Whatever" is easier though, but makes him appear kinda cold or indifferent..? But his japanese phrases show that he seems to be not that indifferent. Maybe i should play both languages. Amazing we can have two different characters in one game. Like how I found english lunafreya differ greatly from japanese lunafrena in ff15
Well, I suppose that's the thing with translations / localisations - whoever is actually doing the translating will always have their own interpretations of certain aspects that are hard to translate like-for-like. Not to mention phrases, sayings and idioms that are culture-specific. It's definitely a tricky thing to get right!
I've played through FFVIII close to 20 times and never knew about #7, the Mr. Aki reprimand scenario. Looks like I have to squeeze another play-through into 2024!
I dunno. I have seen VG characters die from less than being impaled by a giant Ice Lance. So its possible. But Squall has Main character plot armor. So he wouldnt die from something like that.
@@allgoodnamesaregone0 no no no you can't compare those theories. The Jar Jar voice actor precisely said that he worked his voice with this possibility well engaged. It would have been a similar plot device than the one used by Isaac Asimov (I won't say who this guy is out of respect for you) in the end of the Foundation saga. Squall is dead is galaxies away more dumb. Darth Jar is actually an excellent theory and the only one redeeming the ever sinking plot of Star CGI Wars.
I only stumbled across this video tonight so I don't know if you have another facts about FF8 video that includes these, so please ignore this comment if any of my infodumping is a repeat of something you've already done! Also I've only every played the North American release of the game on PS1, both the original and greatest hits versions, and then later got it on Steam just so I could get the contrived finish achievement, so if there is additional context or differences between those versions and the PAL or Japanese versions I'm not aware of them. Anyways, Rinoa lore dump incoming: One thing you missed that seems to lend fandom credence to the Rinoa is Ultimecia theory is that she has the ability to cast Apocalypse in Dissidia as one of her abilities. That's a spell you can only draw from Ultimecia at the end of FF8. Also, Ultimecia's Griever takes on the name Squall has for his ring, which you get to name in a cutscene with the two of them during the attack on Balamb garden by Galbadia garden right after he rescues her. The default name is Griever but it can be anything you choose (I always go with Fluffy). Squall also suggests in that scene that it holds a GF of some sort. Later on in the game, in the cutscene where Rinoa runs out of air as she's floating in space, the ring can be seen on a chain necklace she wears that also has her mother's wedding ring on it. She wanted Zell to make a copy of it for her because its cool, but they didn't get around to it before she fell into a coma, so she has the original ring still with her in that scene. What saves her after she runs out of air in space is never explained, but it could either be the fact that she's a sorceress now, or it could be that Griever saved her somehow. In either case, she has a connection to Squall's ring, and Ultimecia has a GF that adopts the name of it. (I shall junction myself... Unto Fluffy!) I know they said its not canon, but there are too many parallels and coincidences like that, and the ones you pointed out in the video for that not to have been at least an intended plot during the development of the game's story IMO. In Ultimecia's final dialogue in the last stage of the final battle she not only loses the accent, but implies some sort of regret, but you don't get to hear the full thing because once she gives the line "And...", any damaging attack to her will end the battle. You could throw 1 gil at her and win. Minor clarification, I don't know if you just didn't mention it or thought that she was a sorceress the whole time, but she was not actually a sorceress until Edea dumped her powers on her. Her gaining the Angel Wing limit break aboard the Ragnarok (where she also doesn't have her dog Angelo) is supposed to be a clue to her newfound powers. The way the sorceress powers pass around is interesting - at the beginning of the game, only Edea and Adel are sorceresses, with Adel already on ice in space. Edea is controlled by Ultimecia in the future but dumps her powers onto Rinoa so she can no longer be controlled. This puts Rinoa into a coma until she gets to space and is possessed into freeing Adel. When Adel expires, Rinoa gets a sorceress power dump again, but that's the catalyst for the time compression to launch forward to Ultimecia's time. When Ultimecia is defeated, there is a scene of her arriving in the past where present Squall is talking to past Matron, who explains that sorceresses cannot properly die unless they pass on their powers. Matron, Edea, also reveals that she is already a sorceress. This creates a bit of a time loop, where Ultimecia gives Edea the powers that she uses to control her later in her timeline. Back in the present time though, it also means that Rinoa is the only sorceress left in the world, having the combined powers of Adel and Edea (and, presumably, Ultimecia from her having gone into the past to give them to Edea). If there is another way sorceresses are made beyond them passing on their powers on to other young women, the game never tells us, though the time compression sequence does imply that there have been many more sorceresses throughout history. But, that's another mark in the Rinoa = Ultimecia fan theory's favour: If she's the only sorceress left in the world, then who else could Ultimecia be?? She would also know about the Junction Machine Ellone and of Ellone's power, if not during the adventure (a lot happens to her okay please leave my girl alone) then she might learn of it in the aftermath. My fan theory is that something happened in Ultimecia's past that turned her dark, and her desperation to access Ellone's power is so that she can try and change the past somehow, since Squall is somehow able to reach Rinoa through that power while she's floating in space - she can hear his voice. They are able to support Laguna Kiros and Ward through that same power by basically lending them their strength through that connection during critical moments in their past, facilitated by Ellone, where they temporarily inherit the junctions and GFs of your party and allow them to affect their decision making - something Laguna later refers to as 'the faeries' during the Winhill sequence. So not only can you experience the past through someone else, but you can make an impact as well. I think that's what Ultimecia was after, but she couldn't reach far enough back in time without accessing Ellone herself, and time would march on making the Junction Machine Ellone less and less effective, so? Time compression. Make time a smaller factor in the process or make all points in time accessible from that ruined future. I dunno it makes sense to my brain, lol. This game is a lot. Random tangent but in the scenes with Laguna in the past the singer Julia he goes to the hotel room of to chat is Rinoa's mother. He never returned because he got stuck in Esther and was heartbroken, so she wrote Eyes on Me and married Caraway instead while he escaped to Winhill to recover and where he married Raine instead. Rinoa doesn't like the song and if you select the right instruments to play it during the concert she gets mad and storms off. Kind of awkward that Rinoa and Squall's parents were a missed connection. Also she is still wearing a denim miniskirt in her character design but its high-waisted and is worn over a pair of black shorts that have zippers down the front of them. The skirt has kind of a weird design in that it has four round white buttons down the front of it instead of a zipper (I know this for cosplay reasons). I always figured that was why she was moving so weird in that one cutscene where she climbs the boxes - not a lack of athletic ability, but her range of hip movement was restricted by the skirt so she had to do a lot more work with her legs splayed out to either side, lol. No one gets a panty peek with the shorts on underneath but there are still sacrifices made for style, I guess. One last thing before my autism special interest for this game wears off for the night: You mentioned character heights but you didn't go into detail about their ages, specifically that all of them are teenagers. Most of them are 17 with Quistis and Seifer (and I think Irvine?) age 18. I just feel like that really puts certain moments in the game into perspective, like Quistis being a bit hot-headed and lovesick at times in spite of her putting on a front as a mature instructor, the random awkward talks about girls between the boys, the emotional outburst Squall has when everyone decides that Seifer must be dead, and Rinoa running off if she hears Eyes on Me. I first played this game in highschool and so it meant a lot to me to have characters who were immediately relateable, who had unfair expectations put on them at such a young age and were expected to fill the role of adults before they could even hope to be ready for it. And what does it mean for this world to have teenagers run off to provide mercenary support to a village across the ocean against an invading army as an exam/field trip?? It reminds me of something I heard in reference to Romeo & Juliet, the play, which helped make it make sense to me some time ago: They were teenagers. They should've been allowed to be teenagers.
I wish they would re-create the Triple Triad Cards from VIII. They're very expensive on eBay for Originals. I've collected all of the Bandai figures that they released which are awesome ❤
Me too, that would be so cool and surely pretty easy for them to do, so I'm surprised they haven't. I do have some FF8 cards, but they're basically standard playing cards with various FF8 images/key art etc on them. Still love them though 😁
@@FF-Gamr those are the Poker Cards that had come packaged in a clear cassette-style like container, right? I have a few of those left that have survived the years. It's still trippy to me that Angelo is Griever in the future of FFVIII. Hopefully they will give FF VIII as much love and remake as VII. That would be sad if they skipped it and we lose out on them recreating the Triple Triad sets for retail with playmats
Yeah, that sounds like the same ones! I can't even remember exactly which site I bought them from haha. We'll just have to see if it ever does get remade...
Thank you 😁 I'm hoping to do some more like this as well, it just takes a bit of time for me to put them together. But hopefully the next video will be ready fairly soon!
When I played this game when it came out as a kid, I figured Ultimecia was Rinoa in an failed timeline. Was not hard to make that conclusion. I figured Square patched over that concept, and didn't want to distract from the happy ending, which helps sell the game. They sold it as a love story. Just like marketing diamonds as a symbol of love.
Rinoa is definitely Ultimecia. Even if the creator doesn't know it or didn't intend it. How can the creator know if Rinoa is Ultimacia or not, if Ultimacia is from the future and has no in between from the present to the future to reveal anything about her. The creator has no way of knowing who Ultimacia is, because there is a void, both in the story and in the characters. All the creators know is that Ultimacia is a sorcerer from the future and thats it. FF8 is so convoluted, especially in the time travel and time compression part, that even the creators doesn't know what is what. Maybe they are stuck in a time compression themselves.
I mean, the theory makes sense to me. I don't think it takes anything away from the story whether the creators confirm it or not. And when you're playing around with the idea of time, that opens up all kinds of possibilities anyway, so it's not surprising that there's been speculation about it for years.
lol that chalies angels thing i always remember weird scenes in movies of kids playing playstation i especially remember the scene in bring it on when kirsten dunst brother is playing twisted metal 1 in the living room and she rages and throws the playstation at the ground and he turns around and calls her a bitch
Legend of Dragoon came out around the same time rime as this I remember. Some of them had the demo discs for FFVIII. Just like how you would get Dino Crisis on PS1 demo disc for buying Resident Evil:Directors Cut. Or the demo disc for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis when buying Dino Crisis 2 for the PlayStation 1. Awesome fun days playing those and seeing the differences again on here. Thanks
I'm playing FFXV atm and it's a good game. But I really miss the old FF:s. Old FF:s have got more replayable value for a geek like myself. I have mastered 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 13. 13-2 and I always come back for more. The only FFs I haven't finished were FF7 and FF12 (not including 1-6 and online games). I guess I have got a quirky taste.
Rinoa being Ultimecia makes the story 100x better. Considering Ultimecia just appears out of nowhere and has no character development. Also Irvine looks like Micheal Jackson.
#6 this quote still makes no sense and hopefully was taken out of context somehow #28 is also amusing in hindsight considering she actually wears shorts like a normal person, unlike Selphie #46 Harley from FF4TAY wears glasses too #101 Rinoa and Quistis do have some physical limit break attacks as well, actually all but one of Rinoa's are
Imagine if Ultimecia scaled off of how much you have Rinoa in the party. I would have had a hard time on the first playthrough I made it to her. I had Rinoa's Best Limit Break, and her ultimate weapon.
I wonder if the Squall is dead is also a Beatles reference at some level? A real life urban legend theorizing that Paul McCartney died in the mid 60s in a car crash and was replaced by a doppelganger
@@FF-Gamr I looked through the first few dozen comments and saw no one had mentioned it. Even if unintentional, it may still be viewed as a bit of wordplay humor. Thanks for the video btw. I've only played 30 hours of the FFVII remaster so im interested in the other titles somewhat
@@ThommyofThenn This is quite the limit break of a reach. I'm not sure how "Squall is Dead" is at all a wordplay on "I buried Paul". You can say you like FF8 and are also a Beatles fan, but that connection is THE stretch of all time.
@@jackstack2136 i'm been noted for my ability to view things in unconventional ways and quickly when needed. As such, I appreciate your realising this! Cheers
9:06 25# in fact! he backtracked that statement in another interview and said more or less that; in his vision its not true BUT! the other 2 persons who wrote this might have had it in mind. So you said, it is not certain that they are not the same person!
That's true, sadly I only saw that interview after making the video. Still, it's interesting to know that he now hasn't ruled out the possibility of it being the case!
6:43 Actually Cloud is 173cm and if you played KH2, during the battle in Radiant Garden when Squall and Cloud are fighting the Heartless, Squall (well, Leon) is taller.
french players thought Adel is a girl because the french word used( "sorcière"=witch/sorceress) instead of "sorcerer" lol. However, even Zell himself tell Adel is a boy in crude term. in FRENCH VERSION, Zell loves 'bretzel'(Pretzel), not hot dogs ; the erotic magazine is not 'Girl next door' but 'comtesse Cochonou' (= Piggy countess) etc. about speedrun, French version is preferred because less word characters in dialogues.
At 25, even if Rinoa herself in her body becomes ultimecia is irrelevant to Ultimecia having aspects of Rinoa imprinting in her identity, like Greiver being a knight for her, because for Ultimecia to obtain the powers she must get them from Rinoa in the future or someone who did. So, an excuse for Ultimecia being somewhat like Rinoa is inherent. It's just a wonder how close in lineage she was to rinoa and how much jealousy and possessiveness and other negative traits were hiding in Rinoas mind before hand
It's reasons like this that I still like the theory - it opens up a lot of interesting ideas for discussion. I do wonder how they would flesh things out if the game was remade.
@FF-Gamr I for one think if the theory is true it ties everything together perfectly. I consider fiction to belong to the people if it stays in their consciousness long enough. It may come to pass Rinoa and Ultemecia are the same person no matter what the creators say.
i dont know about point nr 25. For me how i view the story, the naming of the necklage being the gf she uses. I have a feeling they dont understand their own story lol ^^
Kitase has actually addressed the theory again in a more recent interview - which I only saw after making the video - in which he said along the lines of "I can't speak for Nojima and Nomura and their interpretations of the connection between Rinoa and Ultimecia". So maybe there is more to it after all
I suppose the nature of memory and the fact that it isn't always reliable could mean that it could be 'manipulated', so to speak, into making you think you didn't do something, when in fact you actually did, and vice versa
Ultimecia is more like the Zemus/Zeromus of the game, while Edea is the Golbez. If Lunarians are the equivalent of sorceresses, then Rinoa would be like another female Lunarian, perhaps living on the "Earth" rather than from the moon.
that last fact makes me wonder, are all 3 of the girls potential sorceresses? did adel chose rinoa just out of convenience? also another fact for zell. his final weapon, Ehrgeiz, is also the name oif a final fantasy tie-in fighting game that used ff7 characters. sadly it wasnt popular, but I enjoyed it, especially the diablo-like dungeon crawl storyline. the name is german for ambition.
YOU DIDNT MENTION NABAÀT FROM 13 wearing glasses🥴 but I'm trying to decide if I'm surprised honestly, too many people don't acknowledge that one💔 she looks like Sandra Bullock with glasses!
Cid ff4, Barret ff7r, Auron ff10 wear glasses. Cloud in ff7ac, but only specific onr for when he rides his motorcycle, cid ff7 as well but those are for aircrafts and I'm not sure if he did use them (and haven't player rebirth yet).
i like the other theor about rinoa x ultimecia more - a younger ultimecia gots rinoa power after she died and ultimecia gots more as just her power a piece of rinoas soul. witches transform , when she " absorb " other witches or many witches. maybe it was a key part from absorbing a piece of rinoas soul that ultimecia transform directly and so she try so change the time without do know why she want it because she handle like rinoa want it
That's fair haha. I guess I should have differentiated between characters who seem to wear glasses for fashion purposes, and those who wear them because they need them. Then again - maybe Quistis is just a hipster and even she's just wearing them because of the style! If I ever get to interview Nomura, I'll have to ask him ^_^
Barret from FF7 Remake wears sunglasses. Barret from FF7 does not. It's an important distinction because they are not only not the same game, they are nothing alike in many ways.
About the glasses: do Aurons sunglasses count? I always thought it makes him look like an older guy who needs to protect his weakened eyes from bright light. like tainted reading glasses and not sunglasses. They never looked like a "coolness" thing to me, and he doesn't wear them (aka does not need them yet) when he is younger. But maybe thats because I grew up with many people with different kinds of blindness, since both of my parents have impaired vision and I saw the strengh of those people represented in him...
You know, tbh I did just think it was a 'fashion' aspect of his design. I hadn't really considered that he might be wearing them because he needs to, but yeah, you could be right about that.
What keeps me coming back to this game is the Renzokuken + Lionheart
Such an awesome weapon 🔥

So, I found out as a kid that you actually CAN look under Selphie's skirt. Fact #102 : FF VIII is a masterpiece !
Agreed! 💯
That doesn't work because that's a fact we did know. Not a fact we didn't know.
Number 46. A notable person you missed who wears glasses - Auron from Final Fantasy X ☺️
I know, I can't believe I missed him of all people - especially as he is The Boss 😎😅
Barrett from FFVII?
@maartenquick6188 He doesn't wear them all the time, though. ;-)
I mean you could argue that he said glasses and not sunglasses 😂 though I still agree with you lol
And Hojo.
I never thought Squall was actually trying to hit Rinoah, I always read it as playfully swatting. "F%ck off, leave me alone. "
Same!
Same here tbh, it's not really something I can imagine him doing
I thought so too, I thought he was swatting at her - nothing violent. He doesn’t seem the type.
I always thought he was just trying to put his arm around her.
The only way this works with the premise and story is if that's the memory he experienced at that moment
Meaning that it was based on frustration and not violence
Ff8 is based on the perspective of squall and to a lesser degree his friends to heart
Squall, Laguna and Raine all have water-based names and it’s implied they are father, mother and son.

@@FF-Gamr also could be the reason hes into being the sorceresses knight thing.
Living the childhood dream
I love that Zell's final weapon is also the name of a game square released that has fighting game aspects and rpg elements
I hate that people pushed this narrative that Squall tried to hit Rinoa. He didn’t even come close to hitting her, he made a *GESTURE* toward her.
Yeah, I have to admit that I never really interpreted it as anything too serious. Maybe the graphical limitations actually helped in that respect. I was quite surprised that anyone would see it that way.
I thought the same thing. Like a throw your hand up in the air kind of thing. When I played when I was younger (probably about 10-13) I still never was under the impression that he was trying to actually hit her
I agree. It looks like he made a frustrated gesture with no intention to hit her, and she flinched to be playful.
Yeah. You know it's like when you're annoyed at a close friend and just make some gesture pretending to hit them. You aren't actually trying to hit them.
Noone is pushing this.
It's the writer himself who admjtted "He shouldnt be hitting her. Its really not good to have a guy hitting a girl." 02:24
So basically we're all wrong and Squall is actually a wife beater.
@@FF-Gamr in dissidia they are defenitly teasing with R=U
To me, the question is not "Is Rinoa Ultimecia?" but rather "In what sense is Rinoa Ultimecia?"
Perhaps it's not in the literal corporeal sense, as in "Bruce Wayne = Batman".

That's a good point, the demos do seem similar in that respect!
Another fact, Rinoa is named Linoa in some other versions of the game
Which, not only would be closer to the Japanese pronunciation but also would mean something like 'late'
Which adds some more to the ultimecia theory and time compression
Especially if we read squall evolution through the game as a personification of grief
With his gforce ring named griever, used by ultimecia, future Rinoa grieving her lost of squall, trying to compress time to relive her happy memory of him forever
Also going to the 5 stages of grief, being quite obvious with her last monologue before you defeat her, even with the mistranslation.
And there is many more 'coincidences' for it to be just that
I won't point them all but at some point it can't be ignore and I wouldn't be surprise if one of the author actually wrote it that way, not kitase obviously 😂
Japanese pronunciation is Rinoa. Linoa is far, not close.
Not really. Japanese people dont pronounce a "r" really. Not exactly like an L, but more a L then a R.
@@zockerking2061They pronounce an r sound that is extremely close to how we pronounce r in English in some contexts.

Ultimecia being Rinoa is way too teased to be completely accidental
While I'm not 100% sure about the theory, there are ways in which I think it makes sense. Whether we'll ever get it totally confirmed by Nojima or Nomura, or included in a potential remake, is another matter!
#6 I don't think he should have made a statement about that because for me as a gamer and a kid back then, I took it as somewhat of just a sway.. Like swaying a fly that is annoying.. Never in my mind did I took it as Squall hitting her.. They were so pixelized ffs so how can you ever come up with that.??
Plus we are talking about people who shoot and take fire blast, thunder and dragon fire. What's that thing?
@@alessandromelito565 yep
Not sure if it’s still possible. But on the original version on the PS one, a second player can be used. Only in battles. Should be in the battle menu. So technically, the part in Charlie’s Angels was correct.
FF9? yes, FF8? No 2 player.
Selphie did remember. She said its because she hadnt had interactions with gf till she came to balamb.
Do not forget about Auron wearing glasses in Final Fantasy 10. In Final Fantasy 14, you can wear it as a glamour accessory as part of the avatar’s character.
I feel bad for forgetting about Auron given that he's an all-time classic character!
@@FF-Gamr no worries
@@FF-Gamr also rikku wears goggles (which technically arent glasses but close enough for me) in FFX
Barret wears glasses although it's only for a little while and in remake only when he's embarrassed or emotional
Yet not as much in Rebirth, even though they're actually out in the wider world and not stuck in gloomy Midgar
That original concept art of squall looks so much like lightning I wonder if he retooled the design
There's probably a good chance that certain character designs influenced others later down the line, whether consciously or subconsciously
I had no idea Squal was based on River Phoenix!!! That makes so much sense.
Why ?
Looks like I have to squeeze another play-through into 2024!

the "Squall is dead" theory is still one of the dumbest things i have heard like..wth xD
I have to say, it never occurred to me during my first times playing the game, until I saw it on forums years later and just thought "wait, what?"
I dunno. I have seen VG characters die from less than being impaled by a giant Ice Lance. So its possible.
But Squall has Main character plot armor. So he wouldnt die from something like that.
It's as dumb as the Star Wars theory of Jar Jar being a Sith mastermind
Anyways, Rinoa lore dump incoming:
One thing you missed that seems to lend fandom credence to the Rinoa is Ultimecia theory is that she has the ability to cast Apocalypse in Dissidia as one of her abilities. Unto Fluffy!)
I know they said its not canon, but there are too many parallels and coincidences like that, and the ones you pointed out in the video for that not to have been at least an intended plot during the development of the game's story IMO.
Excellent video. Thanks!!

The Demo Disk that I played when I was 4 or 5 years old did not have Rinoa in the dollet mission it had Selphie
Fun Fact: Barret & Gladio share the same voice actor in Germany. He also voiced Kratos (God of War), Nomad (Ghost Recon) and Artjom (Metro).
You missed Auron, those babies are prescription sunglasses hahaha
Maybe they are 😎
i like it, good work, it is my favorit FF^^
Thank you 😊 that's good to hear!
lol that chalies angels thing i always remember weird scenes in movies of kids playing playstation i especially remember the scene in bring it on when kirsten dunst brother is playing twisted metal 1 in the living room and she rages and throws the playstation at the ground and he turns around and calls her a bitch
Zell would definitely be a mechanic of sorts if not being SeeD member huh~
Yeah I could definitely imagine that!
there were some fun ones in here! to add to the glasses list, koana from the latest expansion of FFXIV! 💚💜
Thanks 😁
This is really neat well done
Rinoa being Ultimecia makes the story 100x better. Considering Ultimecia just appears out of nowhere and has no character development. Also Irvine looks like Micheal Jackson.
I do wonder whether or not they would alter the story to include it if the game was ever remade. That does seem like a big *if* though sadly...
#6 this quote still makes no sense and hopefully was taken out of context somehow
#28 is also amusing in hindsight considering she actually wears shorts like a normal person, unlike Selphie
#46 Harley from FF4TAY wears glasses too
#101 Rinoa and Quistis do have some physical limit break attacks as well, actually all but one of Rinoa's are
Imagine if Ultimecia scaled off of how much you have Rinoa in the party. I would have had a hard time on the first playthrough I made it to her. I had Rinoa's Best Limit Break, and her ultimate weapon.
That would have been a pretty cool dynamic actually, but yeah could also have made things a lot harder!
I wonder if the Squall is dead is also a Beatles reference at some level? A real life urban legend theorizing that Paul McCartney died in the mid 60s in a car crash and was replaced by a doppelganger
Well, I have to say, I never imagined that connection being made!
Cheers

in fact! he backtracked that statement in another interview and said more or less that; in his vision its not true BUT! the other 2 persons who wrote this might have had it in mind.
So you said, it is not certain that they are not the same person!
That's true, sadly I only saw that interview after making the video. Still, it's interesting to know that he now hasn't ruled out the possibility of it being the case!
Funfact: X-ATM 092 is related to NTSC & JAP version
In the PAL Version it's X-ATM 082.
It's just a transition mistake.
It may come to pass Rinoa and Ultemecia are the same person no matter what the creators say.
there is a fact about Irvine that I find intresting of all the facts about him; He is the youngest member in the team.
I never thought that was Swuall hitting her jsut thought it was him saying Hey! Stop that and her being a bit dramatic!
That's what I thought too
i dont know about point nr 25.
So maybe there is more to it after all
#60 think there was a line somewhere that she did not use GF while at Trabia Garden so maybe she did still remember.
I suppose the nature of memory and the fact that it isn't always reliable could mean that it could be 'manipulated', so to speak, into making you think you didn't do something, when in fact you actually did, and vice versa
Loved this video!
Thank you! 😁
Cloud in ff7ac, but only specific onr for when he rides his motorcycle, cid ff7 as well but those are for aircrafts and I'm not sure if he did use them (and haven't player rebirth yet).
auran from ffx wears glasses, but are sun glasses
#40 You say that Rinoa has the highest compatability with Cerberus at 700; but the chart provided clearly states that Selphie does at 740 ;P
Fact 102: Squall is one of the most miserable buggers of a FF game ever closely followed by Lightning
i like the other theor about rinoa x ultimecia more - a younger ultimecia gots rinoa power after she died and ultimecia gots more as just her power a piece of rinoas soul. witches transform , when she " absorb " other witches or many witches. maybe it was a key part from absorbing a piece of rinoas soul that ultimecia transform directly and so she try so change the time without do know why she want it because she handle like rinoa want it
Barret from FFVII wears sunglases. ;)
I've never seen it mentioned by Nomura or anyone else, but maybe there's something in the Ultimania about it. Sadly I don't read Japanese so I don't know!
2:28 i was maybe 9. I don't recall. But with that scene, l saw it as two friends joking. Playing. And she's displayed her agility by rolling out of danger
I heard somewhere else that Rinoa's name is actually meant to be "Lenore".
I didn't interpret that move as Sauall attempting to hit Rinoa! Just shoo or dismiss her.
Yeah I know what you mean, I didn't see it that way either
I want to know what the devs were thinking making Rinoa look like that in Dissidia. Turned the girl next door into middle aged mehlf who smokes too much
I always thought Seifer was modeled on kiefer sutherland and his character in The Lost Boys
Cid wears glasses often (goggles perhaps, pince nez I think in some cases too).
I FIRST PLAY IT IN DECEMEBER 1999 I FELL INLOVE WITH THE ATMOSTPHERE CHARACTERS STORY AND MUSIC THE GAME WILL ALWAYS IN MY HEART TIL I GONE IN THIS PLANET. THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES FINAL FANTASY 8 THE GOOD OLD DAYS SLEEPLESS GAMING NO INTERNET BEFORE MILLENIUM LETS GO BACK IN 1999
I still love FF8 with all its faults.
Back then when it came out, I was a bit of an Emo kid...
And I was always thinking "Whatever" all the time in my head, (LoL) and that was even before playing FF8.
Squall would have been proud 😆
@@FF-Gamr no, he would just say....
Whatever 😎
awwww, not even the spy!Selphie idea?
Number 46, Final Fantasy IV Cid wears goggles, does that count?
Hmm, that's a good point, though I don't think I'd class goggles as glasses, unless he needed them to see...
