    Yeah, the “hell runs” are a prime example of how speedrunners are just built different, at least from me. I’ve certainly tried to stand the heat, if only because I play a lot of randomizers, and it’s practically suicide for me to just check out the rooms around Norfair’s start. Dealing with it for the entire area…yeah, no, I’m not doing that. Ever.
    Note: none of my seeds ever actually required me to microwave myself before getting the Varia Suit, probably because the randomizer crews know how insane that is for casual players.

    • @DFPercush
      @DFPercush 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      I think hell runs are a hard logic only requirement. I've done from the entrance of upper norfair to bubble mountain on 3 tanks in an old vanilla route, but much beyond that is just too stressful for me nowadays :P

    • @Skullhawk13
      @Skullhawk13 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Fun fact: In the orginal Japanese text for Other M, Samus intentionally disabled the Varia feature despite it not being covered in her orders, so she’s canonically crazy enough to brave Superheated areas in just her Power Suit, and for spite at that. Still a bad game but apparently less so in Japanese.

    I bought Super Metroid at our local Best Buy on release day as a kid with my mom, got a picture of me with the game holding the box, I was so proud of this game when it released. I’ve been playing it casually my entire life almost since 1994. I can’t do any of the speedrun tricks in this game except like wall jumping stuff, every speed runner trick in SM is ridiculously hard until you’ve just out thousands of hours practicing

    • @Bloodstar6078

      Next time you play try doing the mockball in that green room they showed. It's actually not too hard.
      Then you can wall jump up the other end of the room to grab the items above. Don't fall through the floor aftwr grabbing the super missiles though. Instead, exit the room to the right and continue exploring Brinstar. You can now skip the Sporespawn boss to save some time. 🙂

    It tells a lot of the Super Metroid speedrunning community, where in the most run categories the rule is to not cause memory corruption to beat the game fastest possible way, but instead go for the hardest tricks possible to beat the game legally :) SM speedrunners are totally a different breed of gamers for sure! Personally I keep rewatching GDQ SM speedruns of different categories, just because I can always notice something new and interesting! This game literally has no skillcap :D you can get better and better at it seemingly infinitely.

    Super metroid is such a cool game. For years ive loved watching speedruns, playing through it, learning tricks, doing randomizers, all that. There is so much more to this game then what was even covered in this video, the depth is insane. There are so many glitches that are tas or challenge run only, some of which I learned thanks to randomizers and especially puzzle hacks like Containment Chamber, Contamination, and Kero. The movement is also just amazing, the only game I've played that feels better to control is Hollow Knight. Some of the other Speedrun categories are still really cool, my favorite is low%, and just how many combinations of items you can do the lowest possible % with. SM is honestly a sandbox game

      Super Metroid has some cool Low% categories, there are actually multiple ways to finish 14% with No Major Glitches. The most common one is Low% Ice, which has been featured twice at GDQ, at SGDQ 2014 and SGDQ 2017.
      13% has been done by humans with simultaneous Left+Right (which enables underwater walljumps without Gravity Suit).
      When Out of Bounds is allowed, you can kill all of the bosses with only 12%. This has been done by a couple of people.
      Memory corruption allows for completing the game with only 4 item pickups.
      It's even possible to erase items from your inventory to finish with 0% (which is where my avatar comes from).

It doesn't explain them in detail but gives you just enough information to figure it out yourself. Just like with learning wall jumps from the Etecoons or the Shine Spark from Dachora, the game teaches you by showing you and having you do it.
      Of course, CF and special beam attacks are not necessary, so finding a use for them is another thing.

    This is a great way to see speed runs; broken down move by move by the runners themselves is really cool!

    I used to be sad that no run used crystal flash. Then some mad folks got together and worked out time saves from it in RBO, and now I'm happy.
    (The use of X Factor on Ridley is just pure icing on the cake)

      @@bluedistortions X factor gets used in a lot of categories though? It's by far and away the most valuable beam combo.

    Yo... Dr4gon, this is pretty frickin fantastic. I mean Zeni and Zoast do a lot of heavy lifting for the content - they are great and really know their stuff -- but this is some epic level editing and production. Keep it up! EDIT: Apple sauce is part of a healthy speedrunning diet.

    Any part of this RBO run would completely melt the brain of 13-year-old me, playing Super Metroid when it came out. lol, absolutely love Zeni's RBO shirt btw, that's fantastic. 🤣👌
    Crystal Flash is the ONE INSTANCE where I called the Nintendo Tip Line. I saw it in the attract demo and was like "wat." so I called the tip line to find out wtf I just saw.
    I will never possess the discipline required for spike suit... And I've come to terms with that. 😌
    oooo, I've got some apple sauce in the fridge... Thanks for reminding me. That'd really hit the spot right about now! 😋

    There are some insane tricks that require frame perfect inputs or minutes of careful maneuvering, but there are also easy tricks that are immensely satisfying. That triple frame perfect + 50/50 trick in the beginning can also be done with a damage boost if you don't mind taking a little more time and damage, and that's something even I can do.

    I played this game when it first came out as a kid, and discovered things like wall jumping, shinesparking, and the crystal flash on my own, and I was absolutely giddy. Seeing these speed runners exploit those and so much more makes me relive that giddiness and I love it so freaking much.

    Super Metroid is my favorite game. I’ve done a single RBO run once before with savestates and a much easier route. Even then, it probably took me 5 or 6 hours in real time when the game typically only takes me 90 minutes to beat. Despite its difficulty, I think it’s really fun. I’ve poured hundreds of hours into this game and my goal is to hopefully speedrun the game one day

    It's crazy how good these game were. Even better was that the internet wasn't much more than text, at that point, and you figured stuff out by exploring, talking with other kids at school or getting a bunch of neighborhood kids together to play. 90's was peak civilization. It's regressed, massively, since.
