Ahh, Chrono Cross. The game I left my PS1 on for three days straight to allow it to SLOWLY pick it's way through a cutscene screwed with disk damage. Totally worth it.
the thing about the cast of CC that people dont get is that, its supposed to feel random and unbalanced, with some people having these grand adventures, and personal quests of personal growth, while others are just normal people that got caught up and decided to do shit about it, i say this everytime, but NOT EVERYONE NEED A QUEST OF SELF DISCOVERY, sometimes, people are already at their highest point and require no further development. which is why macha is my favorite in the entire cast. she is just this, normal housewife, who simply thought, sure, at my age, there's not much i can do, but hey, if i can help, sure, lets go. she is already an amazing cook, and a great housewife, with a growing son she is proud of. there's no much more that she need to, or even want to acomplish. she doesnt need development, because, she is already the best she can be. and she is happy with that. and she isnt the only one. same with her husband orcha. now there's an argument about korcha, how he barely get any development, but the thing is, he DOES get it, its just that it happens if you decide to abandon kid to die. he goes on his own adventure, and growth, showing that, sometimes, people wont be able to do so, when surrounded by others who are more than them. and that's something i really think people miss in the game. and the reason why, i LOVE the massive cast, filled with dumb, or even pointless characters. because, they are people from that world, ordinary people, who just said, "you know what, sure, i will help you save the world, even if im not the best person to do it".
totally agree with this perspective. unfortunate that this point of critique was so prevalent. one of my favorite characters is Greco, and the game wouldn't necessarily have been better if we got more development or exposition about him. it's a grounded perspective where we, for the most part, only learn what Serge would have, in this brief moment in time we have with these characters. it's part of the theme of the game. they either had their own development in the past, in a future too distant for the game to show, one that isn't relevant to our own journey, etc. and that's all valid to include.
TL/DR: The real reason people criticize the characters with with flat character arcs is due to the playable characters lacking gameplay mechanic incentives, rather than on their own merits. The main issue is, the game doesn't really do anything to make the large cast of characters valuable to actually help in any way. Like, in FF6, there's sections where you have to make multiple parties to explore different sections of a dungeon area simultaneously. In other games the nonactive party members can participate in some kind of home base mechanic or support or combat maneuver. In Chrono Cross, even when characters do help out in some way, most of the time it's only prior to being playable. Also doesn't help you only have 2 and sometimes only 1 party slot you can choose to fill. The Suikoden series's large party size lets you make more interesting combinations of characters tagging along in battle. Thar possibly even lets you take that one novelty character you really like without issue. If you can't and/or never do use characters in the main gameplay of a game, it's harder to form a connection with them. Like, all of these good points you make would be valid to a lot more people if Chrono Cross wasn't a Turn Based RPG, such as if it were still a visual novel like Radical Dreamers where simply helping out without being the main heroes would be more impactful. Half the characters you can recruit are treated more in line with the significance of what you can loot from a treasure chest in Chrono Cross.
@@Shalakor that's not the "real" reason, its one OF the reasons, but the game is designed for you to pick anyone and go with them. i do agree that many characters are lackluster in gameplay diferences. and this is something i would love if it was more interesting. but lets not kid ourselves here, the game already gives alot of power to the player, and, like i said, the idea is for you to pick your favorites. there are enough characters with unique traits/abilities.
Before watching this, I expect this challenge to be an absolute nightmare; only 2 yellow characters are what I would consider to be good, and they are absent for both Garai and Miguel. Big props for even attempting this!
@@tantacles When I made that post, I had Leah and Zoah in mind (although the latter really wants a Stamina Belt), but some of the others do have advantages based upon when they join. Poshul's strength in the early game is usually really good, Mel has a boomerang (although it is not really that good in a game where random encounters are not an issue), Viper gets his unique weapon on join with decent stats (although he has the poor availability), and Norris is basically a yellow element Radius when he joins, which is also not terrible.
@@veghesther3204 What are you doing here? You know CC doesn't have a very easy mode, right? Jokes aside, that Garai fight would truly be a nightmare using only consumable heals. Most people lose that fight simply because they didn't dedicate enough slots to healing. I can't tell you how many times I watched the cutscene where the old man kills his best buddy with Sephiroth's sword (because I was getting handled by Garai)
I just beat Chrono Cross for the first time and binged your Yellow, Blue and Red challenge runs. Did not disappoint whatsoever lol I was cracking up the whole time. I also have learned all kinds of crazy things I never knew while playing Chrono Cross, which is going to make a second playthrough so much fun
Whats interesing about Chrono Cross is that the elements are polar opposites - not paper rock scissors. If you bring a yellow guy to counter a green guy your yellow guy is also weak to green.
This is true, although there is a way around it. The Turn [Color] elements only modify the offensive type of a character/enemy, NOT their defensive type (and I believe it is a bug because it directly contrasts with Solt's tutorial). For example, if I use TurnRed on Serge, he will do extra damage to blue element characters, but still be weak to only black element attacks. Thus, using it on an enemy is a defensive tool (you have a white innate team against Black Dragon and you use TurnRed on it to avoid being clobbered).
Oh a Chrono Cross color run! Nice! I see that we don't use exactly the same rules. Mine are: - Relief Charm hacked in - you cannot allocate elements of other colors, ever. Sell them! - you can use consumables of any color outside of combat - characters can use their special techs regardless of color - Sprigg can only Doppelgang into enemies of said color - Kid does not care about your rules and will use the red elements on her initial grid - you must recruit as much characters of said color as possible and avoid recruiting characters of other colors (Razzly is an exception). No Zappa on non-red run! - your party must consist of characters of the correct color (exception: Hydra boss, and Royal Jelly because it's immune to anything but red), you can bring in a character of another color for a dual/triple tech of the correct color (ex: Nikki in a red run for Luxator) - never 'retire' characters of the correct color, keep swapping them around, get their mini levels (in Terra Tower for example, they must all contribute to at least one boss). - when you don't have enough characters of said color, you can use characters of other colors, temporarily (Ex: Serge at the beginning of the game.) It's better if they have some affinity with your color (ex: Harle in a white run) - you are free to continue using Sprigg even after you have a full party of the correct color - you are free to use Pip and turn him into your color if you want, I usually don't bother - you can use any monsters you want in the Grand Slam, regardless of color That being said, you started with the most difficult color run in my opinion. I am surprised you did not use Sneff and his 991 HPs for Garai/Highwayman/Miguel, it's barely enough to survive the onslaught but that's about the only ace you've got at that point. It's also easy to set up with the Energizer Suit.
What is the origin of "Don't buy a boat?" I noticed a few months ago you've been saying it fairly often in videos, so I was curious where it came from.
Yay silly video! I watch a lot of these types of videos the challenge game videos and everyone in the vids I’ve noticed keep saying things like “oh I can hear you in the comments saying I’m cheating” or “I know you in the comments are going to say I failed the run” and I’m like who the hell would say that? Am I the only one who knows this trick to Time Devourer? Once you damage him enough, he'll cast a yellow element. Once that happens, it signals that it is time to start prepping the Chrono Cross. This will happen whether or not you have the CC in your possession or equipped to Serge. Basically he will help you cast the correct order of elements for the CC to be active (Yellow, Red, Green, Blue, Black, White). Once you get that order set up (once the white element is cast), Time Devourer will literally do nothing for the rest of the battle (unless a new element is cast, breaking the cycle), allowing you to just pummel away at him until he dies. I use this strat ALL THE TIME when getting new endings on New Game Plus. So if you do any future single element only runs, if you stop casting any elements once he casts a yellow element and manage to survive to White, you've basically won the fight.
@@tantacles I should warn you that on rare occasions he might cast Yellow a little early, or occasionally cast the wrong ordered element. It doesn't happen often, but I have seen it a few times.
@@veghesther3204 Yeah, Frozen and Black Hole can mess you up, especially in a solo run (like getting the Dev Room ending with Serge solo). Usually I try to use a blue and black element so TD doesn't. Still, frozen or instant death from black hole aren't guaranteed to hit. And in a party of 2 or 3, it's not likely going to wipe you. Even if it does, chalk it up to bad RNG and try again.
People don't like to experiment for some reason. I discovered the same thing you did trying to get the Dev Ending right after beating the game and noticed the boss was only casting Green when I was just attacking. I thought I could cheese the whole fight with the Green Plate equipped and discovered the shift to Yellow after I did enough damage once I tried it.
@@Magus12000BC For Dev Ending I typically put a green plate on Serge, Black Brooch to guard against ID, and make sure he is the one to cast the Blue Element when the opportunity comes up to avoid being Frozen.

@tantacles Arch devil pip might of been a better choice end game than norris, his attacks should be better with more attack and defense and health than him (he loses in .1 stamina recovery, mdef and accuracy(95% to 99%). It would be a long grind for it though, as you can't use him for 120 elements iirc. And if your on PC, pips elements and stat glitch is patched out So it's a good one to use if you want a 3rd solid character next time with Pip
Hilarious commentary bro honestly I’ve run from too many battles myself and been killed by poison after getting the win too the frustration is real lol
It's worth noting that you're playing the remaster. A good deal of the bosses have been nerfed. Sonofagun, Bunyip, and Miguel are the ones that stood out the most to me. The original PS1 version is a fair deal harder.
personaly, would have counted Sprigg as a Yellow innate at all times on the condition that they transform into a Yellow Innate enemy ASAP. likewise with the Transform element itself
Chrono Cross having so many characters was one of the reasons I liked it so much. Radiata Stories and all its potential party members had a similar effect. I will never understand the complaints of bloat/etc when it comes to things like this. That said, seeing stuff like is very fun, too, and only really possible because there are so many characters.
Nice to see a new challenge! Did they ever fix the input lag issue, or is that why you're accidentally running away sometimes? I haven't played since a couple months after release, I remember it being a big problem on both Steam and Switch
Watching this reminds me that, while I have played through CC a couple of times to completion, and restarted a few times without finishing, I still don't remember anything about the plot or most of these enemies. Time for a replay, I guess!
Now that you mention it, I can't think of a JRPG I've played where you actually buy your boat/airship/submarine/spaceship/timeship. They pretty much all run on One Piece logic -- if you need a transport, there's most definitely someone around who you can get you one, you just haven't looked hard enough for their quest chain yet.
I just realised. I never did Pierre's branch. My first run was Guile and every time after thst i chose the musician (nikki?) because the Sea, the Wind and the Waves is such a powerful song and i love that scene.
@@veghesther3204 pierre need his hero stuff to even be functional. but i remember people talking about him actually becoming a powerhouse when he is fully geared up. i never bothered with him because "not magus" and "bass guy" are so much better characters. but in my next play through i will go with him, just for the heck of it, since i never did, even after replaying the game so many times.
@marcosdheleno I don't think I would call pierre a powerhouse by any means, but he doesn't suck once you get all of the hero gear. It's a shame you get the last pieces so late in the game lol
Couldn't you have used Turn Yellow on party members to allow them to be usable for those times you didn't have an innately Yellow party member to work with, such as Mello Yello? 🤔
I absolutely love this game, never came out in the UK originally, I played it on emulator years ago. Then, when its remaster came out... was finally able to buy it properly!
we need more chrono cross challenges and general content. Also, slight correction on the speed up/speed down function; it was in the original game too, but the remaster makes it available on a new game. In the original it was locked behind NG+, much like the item that lets you swap out serge in both versions.
My boy cat has pretty much always been chill with cuddles and hugs, and will even jump on my back when I'm reaching for stuff in the fridge because he wants a ride. My girl cat will go full murderhobo if she so much as sets one paw off the ground, and has surprisingly powerful limbs and sharp claws to deter hugging. But after years of patience and diligence, I can now hug her for like five seconds before she gets clawsy. Progress!
Interesting run. I've thought about doing something like Worst Character from each element (Use a code/mod to get all characters + the item to take out Serge in battle), but this idea actually is pretty interesting. Might try this myself.
You could have acquired the Profiteer's Purse, disassembled it for Iron, then forge Poshul Iron Gloves and Iron Mail to have made the Viper Manor section much easier. Edit: Wait, you did exactly that! Why not do it sooner?
You Insta got MY sub lol. I see a lot of “challenge” stuff for games but the only Chrono Cross challenge stuff I see/ saw- so cool! 31:10 I have to say/ admit, I have never tried to move after battle with a status- or at least never flu, so never noticed that wave movement pattern it causes 😅
Man this video really took me back when me and my brothers would play this together on the same save file kudos on the handicap that I would never wanna put myself through lol sub for this one.
I'm sure you know this, but the Time Devourer used Omega Yellow when it did because you were inadvertently starting to set up the Chrono Cross pattern, and its moveset is programmed to try and counter that from happening since that's supposed to be the official way you defeat it. Defeating in pure battle is a bad ending, technically. BUT IT STILL COUNTS. This challenge was fun to watch, as are all of yours, but this one especially was interesting as it taught me a few nuances about the game I hadn't quite realized, combat wise, owing to me being much more into knowing the lore of it than actually playing it, as a long time Chrono series fan. (One day they'll make a third game... one day...)
Between all the accidental running from combat and the failure to rename the space alien dude, I think the issue here is that you really need to turn off speed up once and a while if you want to accurately press the right menu options. It admittedly got a little frustrating seeing all these blunders lol
Thank you for doing a Chrono Cross fun. Please make a video on Chrono Trigger for me because despite having 4 year old footage of one, I'll never actually make a video due to mental health issue. Thanks!
given the number of party members, this one would like to suggest an additional rule/sub-challenge for future CC runs; Collect as many party members as possible Also rotate through mutually exclusive recruits for each run just for variety(for example, Pierre one time, Guile the next, etc). Assuming it wouldn't actively harm the run.
random question, but does anyone else wonder just what elements and element grids look like in-universe? Like, they clearly aren't just a mechanic, they exist in-world, so what do they look like? How does the expansion of your grid work and how does that look?
POSHUSHUU! Love me some Funguy! And then his ultimate tech where he has all his spore children. (trying to think of what a mushroom soda would be like.. but think I've seen those...) Oh yeah, forgot Mel/Squirt also has boomerang, that's nice. Old man Viper, truly the master of the Archipelago. And Norris and Porre and the rest of the Chrono Trigger World, it's so weird, saw one person's map of where they think the El Nido archipelago is in the Chrono Trigger map...
Honestly, I would’ve made an exception with healing spells like Recover all and Heal all. They’re practically necessary with the mid to late and end game bosses especially on a first playthrough.
Hey Tantacles, I always love to see your new videos on my list, especially when it's my favorite game of all time. It would be a long grind for it though, as you can't use him for 120 elements iirc. And if your on PC, pips elements and stat glitch is patched out So it's a good one to use if you want a 3rd solid character next time with Pip
Watching this so mermaids don't take my job
Hilarious commentary bro honestly I’ve run from too many battles myself and been killed by poison after getting the win too the frustration is real lol
I just gotta say always appreciate the ff8 music in the background of ur videos even if its not even final fantasy related
Did you ever try the Suikoden games? If not they'd be right up your alley. Same for Eiyuden Chronicles coming out soon.
Nice to see a new challenge!
Did they ever fix the input lag issue, or is that why you're accidentally running away sometimes?
I haven't played since a couple months after release, I remember it being a big problem on both Steam and Switch
I’m not sure exactly why it happens. My inputs just seem to occasionally get doubled when the speed up function is gone
I believe they made an update a few months ago where the fixed the lag issue
Watching this reminds me that, while I have played through CC a couple of times to completion, and restarted a few times without finishing, I still don't remember anything about the plot or most of these enemies. Time for a replay, I guess!
Fun video! I never would have that to do this.
Also, I catch all the cute pop culture references haha
I definitely woulda had Ayla in my team....Leah. Triple Kick is as good as it was in trigger
41:30
You could always go to the Epoch room hidden in Viper Manor to change his name
Ah yes... another game where my cheap Mad Katz memory card kept corrupting at the same place, rendering it unplayable for me at the time...
Thank god for the remaster. No more memory cards!
Saw this challenge and said "oof, we're going to be running Poshul for a long time, eh?"
Please do the same challenge with all the colors lol. As a wise meeseecks once said, "Existence is pain"😂
Thank you for the mention! Awesome video, Always love to see more Chrono Cross content!!
the Lagoon music set my heart ablaze
Nasir says hi
I’ll do that next time!
I love this concept. Really want to see this challenge with other colors, but maybe it will probably be easier.
Fantastic watch!! Now can you be persuaded to do ALL the the other elements? Hahaha
This game does not get the respect it deserves. Glad you jumped in
It gets respect nowdays because back then the definition of what made a good JRPG was VERY narrow.
Sir I love you... but you are killing me with these accidental run aways 😂
Gods, I wish I knew the origin of "don't buy a boat".
I'm sad you didn't use my favorite character, Thundercock Snef
Hope you can use yellow elements in more than three battles next time.
You made my evening with this one 😃
I hope you'll have an amazing vacation 😁
It’s the voice over that made me finish the video. Great humor and good writing 😂💯
Thank you!
Progress!
I'd love to see more Chrono Cross challenges!
Great video ❤
Love Chrono Cross! My OCD hates that PhysNegate was renamed to NegatePhysical...but thats my issue not yours. Fun video!
Cheers for beating an amazing game in a unique way!
Chrono Cross is my favourite game on the PS right next to FF8. These 2 are the reason why im still playing rpg games today.
Thanks for makin this video my friend I loved every minute of it and very good job on explaining everything I hope you will do legend of legaia soon
32:00
If I remember correctly, you could acquire trap elements before one of the Fort Dragonia runs in order to get some high level elements early
Two paws up for Poshul our lovely helper in the early game unless you REALLY love dogs and used her full speed. :)
I forgot 😅
And then I saved 😅
You Insta got MY sub lol. I see a lot of “challenge” stuff for games but the only Chrono Cross challenge stuff I see/ saw- so cool!
31:10 I have to say/ admit, I have never tried to move after battle with a status- or at least never flu, so never noticed that wave movement pattern it causes 😅
Man this video really took me back when me and my brothers would play this together on the same save file kudos on the handicap that I would never wanna put myself through lol sub for this one.
Still holding on to hope that a remake is made!
Forcing you to skip fights? Leave it to Beeba
babe wake up, the new tantacles video dropped
I remember when I jokingly mentioned this challenge in the Discordridiliodoo
And I did it! 😀😀😀
Can you beat Chrono Cross with only black characters and elements?
I've been contemplating picking this up again and following a guide to "catch em all"
I'm sure you know this, but the Time Devourer used Omega Yellow when it did because you were inadvertently starting to set up the Chrono Cross pattern, and its moveset is programmed to try and counter that from happening since that's supposed to be the official way you defeat it.
(One day they'll make a third game... one day...)
Awesome bgm for the 2nd Solt and Peppor fight. ❤
Between all the accidental running from combat and the failure to rename the space alien dude, I think the issue here is that you really need to turn off speed up once and a while if you want to accurately press the right menu options.
It admittedly got a little frustrating seeing all these blunders lol
If you think YOU’RE frustrated, you should know that I cut out 3/4 of them
@@tantacles OMG, you poor soul. XD
TBH I think part of why it frustrates me is because I would definitely do the same thing.
It's been a super long time since I played this game. I was in high school.. but, I don't remember getting my body back at all.
I just discovered your channel brother, i am not sleeping today! Amazing content♥
Thank you for using final fantasy music it worms my heart😢
Thank you for doing a Chrono Cross fun. Please make a video on Chrono Trigger for me because despite having 4 year old footage of one, I'll never actually make a video due to mental health issue. Thanks!
given the number of party members, this one would like to suggest an additional rule/sub-challenge for future CC runs; Collect as many party members as possible
Also rotate through mutually exclusive recruits for each run just for variety(for example, Pierre one time, Guile the next, etc). Assuming it wouldn't actively harm the run.
random question, but does anyone else wonder just what elements and element grids look like in-universe? Like, they clearly aren't just a mechanic, they exist in-world, so what do they look like? How does the expansion of your grid work and how does that look?
I love the reasoning for Water's name. Will you be attempting a run for each Innate Element color?
Probably! But might skip red… 😭😭😭
@@tantaclesOh? Why is that?
@@Funami2006Probably the fact that the only Red healing element available is the Tablet, which is far worse than even the Capsule seen in this run. 😭
There are some fun strategies to use later in the game to combat this
Hot damn. Got a chrono vid today!
Red only might actually be the most painful run, even is it does contain some of my favorite characters.
I fucking love your videos man, Justin Beeba FTW!!!!!
I can’t believe I missed that pun opportunity
Garai is so tough! I remember him absolutely decimating me my first playthrough
Hey cool video... will watch the rest after work
Back, enjoying the rest of your video! Joined Discord.
What the ever living flock is that sound played during the death scenes like 14:40 I feel like I know it but can't place it
POSHUSHUU!
Love me some Funguy! And then his ultimate tech where he has all his spore children. (trying to think of what a mushroom soda would be like.. but think I've seen those...)
Oh yeah, forgot Mel/Squirt also has boomerang, that's nice.
Old man Viper, truly the master of the Archipelago. And Norris and Porre and the rest of the Chrono Trigger World, it's so weird, saw one person's map of where they think the El Nido archipelago is in the Chrono Trigger map...
When does your ff9 vivi Challenge Videos come live?
Probably in a couple of weeks
Honestly, I would’ve made an exception with healing spells like Recover all and Heal all. They’re practically necessary with the mid to late and end game bosses especially on a first playthrough.
PO-SHU-SHU? You didn't do thith run becauthe I thugethed a Chrono Croth challenge a few videoth ago did you Tantypoo? (I'm not sorry for this)
🤣🤣🤣
So when two people sleep together along with a dog it’s normal but if the dog talks it gets a bit weird
Hey Tantacles, I always love to see your new videos on my list, especially when it's my favorite game of all time. (Yes, Chrono Trigger is technically better and more cohesive, but CC will always hold that place in my heart).
That one-off joke about the Sun of a Gun made me think though, any interest in doing a Golden Sun challenge run? The first two are amazing and some of my faves as well.
Yes. Golden sun just came out on switch, so there will be some sort of challenge
15:12
Wait
If you went the. Save Kid route, then why didn't you recruit Mel
Mel is a Yellow Boomerang character plus has a steal Tech
Did you just not know that you could recruitment her early?
Um… I did
What are you talking about
@@tantacles
I meant right after you choose to save kid
But maybe I'm mistaken on when you could recruit her
I swear she did her mischief right before you leave the hospital to find a cure for Kid
Nope, after kid is cured. You need kid in the party to recruit her.
1:03:15 Reminded me of the classic Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots
Never heard of this game, I might have to give it a go now :D ps sorry but I could not stop laughing every time you ran away, I could feel your pain xDDD
Haven't played the game since it came out. I'd forgotten just how much work combat was.
