This is so embarrassing. Sorry, Nina, it's so not what I want as a Canadian. I'm disgusted with my government and the laws that protect the identity of the companies who are doing this. I live near Calgary and I wonder why I even bother recycling my garbage if some of it can end up in Indonesia or India. It's so frustrating, the world we live in now. We protect people who do bad things and we lie to good people. 😞 It's not right.

I used to run a small garbage hauling company in Calgary and I seen what happened to much of the "recycling". Let's just say I don't participate in the blue bin programs 🤔
I later sold my business when it started to grow too fast and I didn't feel like hauling garbage anymore. I now do a lot of secondhand sales and repair/clean/paint quality items for reuse to divert them from landfills and junk yards.

From a production perspective, its a miracle material. Very easy to form, cheap, robust, sterile, doesn't decay, infinite shelf life. The same things that make it great are also the things that make it an environmental disaster. Even if we found a similar material, it would likely have the same negative impacts on the environment. I think we should start by banning it for all non-food products.

The solution is simple. Use the company logo on the waste product and sue the product mfr for damages. If the laws in your country do not allow for this, change the law. A fine of $100 per gram of identifiable waste exported into a country that does not already offer that product at retail would be a great start. Those companies being hit with these fines from International victims would go after the recyclers and crush them. I can see how US law might protect some companies because of a lack of Nexus, But perhaps the laws could be enforced through the International court of human rights. If this could be done non biodegradable packaging would disappear in 3 years. Or at least companies would leave their logo off the product.

So sad. Thank you for this excellent video. We all need to be more careful with how much waste we generate. I did not know our waste is continuing to be dumped in other countries....and has been going on for some time. I am so sorry for Canada's role in this. We all, as individuals need to do our part...including being aware of how our decisions and actions contribute. As far as the broad stroke decisions.. It is probably going to come down to 'follow the money...and who has all the power with it'....including the reason why there is lack of transparency and political action.

Been doing a deep dive into this issue the last couple of weeks. Have reused, repurposed & recycled all of my life. We buy as little in plastic as possible.
On March 30th, the recycling association announced we could NO LONGER RECYCLE ANY PLASTICS.....because there was no market for selling it. An entire community has been told to just throw all the plastic in the garbage from now on!! 🤢 This just makes me ill!!
So we are researching how we can start a grass roots organization, starting at a household level, to deal with the issue. We have found a couple of small solutions for #2-#5 plastics, but PET/PETE #1 plastics seem to have no recycling application outside of commercial fabric use and make up a significant portion of local plastics.
We will start encouraging people to avoid #1 plastics as much as possible, start a lobby campaign aimed at manufacturers (we are joining with several other communities in the same boat) and seek local solutions to local problems....
    Not a short-term project!!

      I agree.
Let's not forget the manufacturers role in this and the lack of regulation on packaging.
We rarely hear anything about rules for packaging, it shouldn't be completely up to the consumer to find products with less plastic packaging.
I feel like this glaringly missing from the conversation because governments protect big business.

There were documentaries before and around the time when China banned unsorted and unrecyclable waste to be imported. Since then for all those years, it is sad to see that instead of processing them properly for 3rd-party vendors or recycling garbage locally and the black sheeps in recycling business simply find other dumping grounds with loop holes. It is lucrative business; those companies do not only charge local residents and organizations for recycling fees but also sell the waste overseas for considerable amount, easy money from both ends.

I live in a rural area in a community of 1800. Our local butcher has gone back to wrapping meat in paper! The local bakery has announced it will be changing how it packages baked goods at point of sale. Our local mom & pop grocery no longer supplies bags (bring you reusable, we all have them) and has made a commitment to changing suppliers to get away from plastic packaging. I now shop at these stores and forego the grocery store that refuses to make changes. Others locally are doing the same.....

Hello Canada! It’s time for humanity!
Indonesia is not a place where you just can dump all your trash! We have the right to live in a healthy environment too! Not just for your country Canada!

This is why I don't recycle anymore except by using re-usables

All the plastic could be processed back to diesel fuel. So why not work with farms to turn it into fuel for their farm equipment. I saw a few videos on the topic and one off grid farmer used the fuel to run his generator.

Someone needs to make a chain of stores that has no plastic and only use things that are actually recyclable

Let me just add this to the "stupid ideas that completely ignore logistics" list.

There will always be the "that's impossible so forget it and I'm so smart and see you later I need to go buy a bunch of plastic lawn furniture at Costco now" person but ignoring that there are 2 packaging free grocery delivery companies here in Vancouver that pack everything in no packaging, paper bags, glass bottles or glass jars. And if you go for the jars you have to pay a deposit that you get back when you return them. No fake recycling, everything is either reused or composted. It is possible is all I'm saying.

You know, I saw that there's a way to turn plastic into fuel, but of course hardly anyone will do this.
